Strengthening materials logistics through agile and scalable software solutions

>Case studiesMaterials Inventory Management System Client: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

Many organizations face challenges with monitoring and tracking materials movement across storage facilities, reduction facilities, and construction sites.

Tracking progress as materials move to their final destination is important to prevent costly delays and reduce inaccuracies in the processing of contractor payments.

Use of appropriate technology can increase the efficiency and cost effectiveness of the materials logistics process. Atkins delivers software solutions that are designed to meet your specific needs in managing the movement of construction or debris materials. These solutions accommodate the use of mobile devices for field data entry into a centralized system in real time. Management reports and dashboards then provide quick information access on the materials status and associated attributes to project stakeholders.

From tracking collection and reduction of debris after a storm to moving and managing materials on a construction site, Atkins solutions are tailored to meet your specific requirements. Our turnkey solutions handle all aspects of technology planning, implementation, training, hosting, and maintenance.

In today’s fast-paced environment, knowing when and where your resources are is not just a luxury; it is a necessity to ensure efficient materials handling and accurate record keeping.

Atkins Automated Debris Management System

The Materials Inventory Management System (MIMS) was used to inventory construction materials as they arrived at a centralized storage facility in the greater New Orleans area. The materials were ultimately dispersed to individual project sites in support of levee reconstruction efforts following the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina.

The objective of MIMS was two-fold: to facilitate the accurate count of materials on hand and to provide a tool for appropriate materials allocation based on individual project-approved materials lists. MIMS combined both handheld and web-based solutions to support the tracking of various materials and transportation methods in a 24/7, demanding, and fast-paced environment.

Logistics Management System Client: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

To support Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport’s implementation of a $6.5 billion capital improvement program containing more than 300 projects, Atkins designed and developed a logistics application to streamline coordination of equipment and construction staging areas resulting in less conflicts, fewer required staging areas, and reduced costs.

Atkins’ unique map-based software algorithms within the logistics application resolved project conflicts and optimized planning by processing user data constraints spatially and temporally. Coupled with advanced mapping and querying functionality, the logistics application allowed for better oversight of airport construction activity. This web-based application integrated four main airport business systems including enterprise scheduling, contracts management, accounting, and geographic information systems.

The Atkins Automated Debris Management System (ADMS) facilitates monitoring, data capture, and reporting of debris removal operations following disasters such as hurricanes, wildfires, and ice storms. ADMS and earlier generations of this solution have been used to support event response for multiple Atkins clients around the United States.

Features and benefits of the system include:

•Debris and hazardous materials removal is tracked from collection through final disposal.

•Collected and saved data is shared among partners and client organizations through a web-enabled interface that uses restrictions and roles to provide appropriate security access to various stakeholders.

•Quality assurance capabilities enhance complex management of contractors and subcontractors, while facilitating accurate invoicing and payment of debris removal services.

•Options, such as photo capture and global positioning system (GPS) capabilities, enhance debris tracking in locations where address information may not be available.

•The reporting module allows users to run reports in near real time to perform quality control, summarize quantities, and support public information dissemination.
