HEAD COACHRYAN “ROCK” PERROTTE Former Fort Wayne standout middle blocker, Ryan “Rock” Perrotte, enters his third season as the men’s volleyball head coach after spending 12 seasons as the Fort Wayne men’s volleyball assistant coach.

During his tenure, the Mastodons have reached a national title game, made two NCAA Final Four appearances and won two MIVA championships. He has coached three All-Americans and 14 All-MIVA selections.

A proud native of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Rock came to Fort Wayne in the fall of 1995 and was a four-year starter at middle blocker for the ‘Dons. Perrotte’s single-match hitting percentage record set against Ohio State in 1999, stood for 11 years until Oliver Kook’s topped the mark with an .875 performance against Lewis in 2010. In Rock’s senior season, he was named to the All-MIVA Second Team, leading the ‘Dons to a 23-4 overall record, a MIVA conference championship and an appearance in the NCAA Final Four.

In four seasons, Perrotte competed in 345 total sets, posting 681 kills, including three seasons of a hitting percentage greater than .350. His .405 hitting percentage as a senior is still one of the best marks in Fort Wayne history. He finished his career at Fort Wayne ranked third in career blocks with 429 and eighth in career digs with 579. In 2006, Rock was an All-America Selection at the US Adult Open Championships in New Orleans.

It all started about 10,000 years ago…

That’s when mastodons roamed the southern GreatLakes region of North America. These stocky versions of modern elephants reached heights of about ten feet at the shoulder, with tusks that curved upward that were six feet or more in length. Mastodons were browsers who fed mostly on leaves and twigs from small trees and shrubs.

One such mastodon found its final resting place about two miles south of Angola, Indiana, on land that would eventually become part of Orsie Routsong’s farm. In the fall of 1968, Routsong decided to expand a small pond on his property. An excavator was hired and instructed to pile the excavated material around the edge of the pond. Several days after the excavation was finished a heavy rain storm pounded the piles of dirt.

The next day, a young neighbor boy of Routsong’s discovered a large bone in one of the dirt piles. Routsong knew it was something out of the ordinary, so he called JackSunderman,chairofthe IPFWGeologyDepartment,toidentify the bone, and to ask for advice on what to do with it. Sunderman says his first question was, “How big is the bone?”withRoutsong’sanswerbeing“prettybig,maybe3or4 feet long.”

When Sunderman got to the farm, he identified the bone as a leg bone of a mastodon. He told Routsong a skeleton like this would have scientific and instructional value if a large portion of it could be located. Routsong agreed, and also agreed to have the IPFW Geology Department do theexcavation. Sunderman got two more faculty members, GeoffreyMatthewsandBerndErdtmann,andseveralgeologystudents to help in the project.

After all the mastodon bones were collected, cleaned and preserved, Routsong agreed to have the adult mastodon skeleton placed on permanent display at IPFW; the skull of a nearby baby mastodon is now on loan to Science Central.

In the spring of 1970, The Communicator (IPFW’s student newspaper) began a drive to come up with a mascot for IPFW. Some of the suggested choices included the Boiler-Hoosiers, Warhawks, Marauders, Frontiersmen, Pioneers, Elves and Hobbits. Those names and others came from student suggestions. Steve Pettyjohn, who served as the student body president in 1968-69, wrote a letter to the editor about the school mascot. In his letter, Pettyjohn extolled thevirtuesofchoosing themastodonas IPFW’smascot:“Itsounds different, strange - that’s exactly why. It’s different and yes,evenstrange.ForGod’sSakes,let’shavethecouragetobe a little different.”

In the meantime, former Indiana Congressman Mark Souder, who served as student body president in 1969-70, recalls being lobbied by the Geology Club to choose themastodon.

According to Nusbaumer, “Souder appointed a committee in student government to select a name although he was lobbying hard for the mastodon.” After some discussion on the subject, Souder says a vote was taken by the committee and the mastodon came out the winner. Souder finished his recollection with these thoughts. “History shows that the advocacy of the geology club was correct. The fast, decisive action of the elected student government—though it did not please everyone and was not a precedent that the University desired to see—has also been upheld by history as IPFW regularly scores high in any list of unique university nicknames; even in this era when everybody strives to be different. We did it decades ago.”

WHY MASTODONS?SCOUTING FORT WAYNEFort Wayne enters the weekend 7-0. Pelegrin Vargas leads the team in kills per set with 3.86, followed by Colton Stone with 3.05perset.MichaelKeeganispacingtheMastodons’.345hittingpercentagewith10.33assistsperset.TomasGagoleadsthe ‘Dons with 1.44 blocks per set, a national best. Fort Wayne moved into the AVCA Top 15 Poll on January 29 for the first time since April, 20, 2015.

SCOUTING SAINT FRANCISSaint Francis will enter its match with Fort Wayne with a .500 record at 5-5. It’s only win over a Top 15 team was over then No. 8 Stanford. The Red Flash have faced seven teams that were or spent time in the Top 15 this season. Three members of Saint Francis’ team have 75 kills or more on the season.

SCOUTING PENN STATEPenn State starts the weekend 3-2, but will have a match with Ball State before welcoming the Mastodons. PSU has wins over Mount Olive, Alderson Broaddus and USC. Losses came to the Nittany Lions at the hands of UCLA and Ohio State. Penn State has seven juniors and seniors on its squad.

AVCA TOP 15 ‘DONSFort Wayne moved into the AVCA Top 15 Coaches Poll on January 29, coming in at No. 15. The Mastodons are ranked for the first time since April 20, 2015, which was also a spot at No. 15.

ONE OF THREEFort Wayne is one of just three programs in the country with an undefeated record through the month of January. No. 1 Long Beach State is 9-0 and Charleston is 3-0.

NATIONAL LEADERAfterarrivingoncampusonJanuary2,TomasGago is rankedfirst in thenation inblockspersetwith1.438.Hedidnotcompete in Fort Wayne’s first two matches of the year, but has since posted five or more blocks in three matches. This is the most on Fort Wayne’s roster. This included eight blocks against Harvard and seven against Sacred Heart.

UNDEFEATED STARTFort Wayne started 4-0 for the first time since 2007. That marked the fourth time in program history that the Mastodons have started 4-0. The best start in program history was in 2007, when the ‘Dons started 8-0. In that season, the Mastodons went to the national championship match, before falling to UC Irvine. Through seven matches, the ‘Dons are still undefeated, which is the third time in program history to start 7-0. 2007 and 1999 were the two other seasons to have a 7-0 start.

BRINGING OUT THE BROOMSSix of Fort Wayne’s seven victories so far this season have been sweeps. The Mastodons only dropped one set in January in a 3-1 win over Harvard.

IN THE RANKINGS...Fort Wayne is ranked in the top five in the country in assists per set (4th), hitting percentage (3rd), kills per set (3rd) and win/loss percentage (T-1st). The ‘Dons own 12.09 assists per set, .345 hitting percentage, 13.00 kills per set, and a perfect 1.000 win/loss percentage. Individually, Michael Keegan is sixth in the country and second in the MIVA in assists per set with 10.33. TomasGagoisfirstinthenationinblockspersetwith1.438.PelegrinVargasisfourthinthecountryandsecondintheMIVAwith 3.86 kills per set.

In addition to his defensive performance, he also contributed 11 kills, with a perfect 6 for 6 against SHU. Because of this, he earned the Off the Block/Springbak Inc. National Freshman of the Week.

KEEGAN PLAYER OF THE WEEKMichael Keegan was the recipient of the MIVA Defensive Player of the Week for the week of January 16. Keegan earned this honor behind a 22-dig weekend at Princeton and NJIT. He had 17 digs and two block assists against the Tigers. Keegan also chipped in five digs in the Mastodons’ 3-0 win at NJIT.

SWEEPING STARTFort Wayne started the season with four straight sweeps. This is the first time in program history that Fort Wayne started the season with four straight victories without dropping a set. The four-match stretch is the longest streak of sweeps since 2007, when the Mastodons had six straight, including three matches in the MIVA tournament.

HOT HITTING AT PRINCETONTheMastodonshadhothandsatPrinceton,endingthenightwitha.522hittingclip.TomasGagoledthe‘Donswitha.700clip,followed by Pelegrin Vargas (.615), Colton Stone (.375) and Tony Price (.364). Richie Diedrich had five kills on five attempts for a perfect 1.000 and Michael Keegan also had a kill on his only attempt. Keegan dished out 32 assists, and the ‘Dons recorded 40 total assists on 41 kills.

WINNING BIGFort Wayne’s win over Emmanuel had a 29-point differential in favor of the Mastodons. This was Fort Wayne’s largest differential in a three-set match since 2015, when the ‘Dons defeated Loras. That match also had a 29-point differential.

NATIONAL PLAYERSThree players on the Fort Wayne roster have playing experience for their respective national teams. Sophomore Pelegrin Vargas competedforthePuertoRicanNationalTeam,freshmanTomasGagofortheChileanTeam,andfreshmanFredericoSantosforthePortuguese National Team.

WHERE THEY’RE FROMTony Price and Max Hansen are two of only three players from the state of Indiana playing on an NCAA DI or DII roster for the 2018 season. Jack Carlson is one of only two players from Colorado on a DI or DII roster for this season.

WATCH OUT FOR PELESophomore Pelegrin Vargas was named to the Karch Kiraly Award Watch List for the 2018 season. The Karch Kiraly Award is given toanoutstandingoutsidehitterattheDIorDIIlevel.TJDeFalcoofLongBeachStatewasthe2017recipientandNicolasSzerszenofOhio State won it in 2016. He joins five other MIVA players that were also selected for the watch list.

WATCH OUT FOR FREDFreshman Frederico Santos was selected for the 2018 Lloy Ball Award Watch List. The Lloy Ball Award is given to an outstanding setter at the DI or DII level. Santos joins the likes of Josh Tuaniga (Long Beach State), who won the Lloy Ball Award in 2017, and Leo Durkin (BYU) who was selected as a finalist in 2017. There are four MIVA setters who made the watch list.
