TYPES OF MANIPULATION
Not all forms of manipulation are active, that is,someone
leading us through the process. At times, we may be the victims of
passive manipulation, where were taught to act a certain way or
expected to retain certain beliefs.
Passive Manipulation
At times, individuals are manipulated based on inherent,
passive beliefs, whether they are true or not, such as the belief that
attractive people are more honest than non-attractive people. These
beliefs are not necessarily taught, but, instead, learned through social
contact and observation, and decisions are derived or manipulated
through these beliefs.
For example, a recent Cornell University study shows that
juries are more lenient with attractive defendants because they believe
attractive people are less likely to be evil or guilty.xx
Generally, an
attractive defendant gets either a short sentence or no sentence at all.
For that reason, attorneys always attempt to make their clients look as
attractive as possible in hopes of manipulating the outcome. Even on
TV shows, the good guys are generally attractive, and the bad guys are

26
less attractive. If the bad guy on TV is attractive, isnt that generally
the twist or surprise?
Election Results
During political elections, people do not realize they actually
have inherent, passive beliefs which will influence their voting
decisions. Research at the Institute of Psychology in Poland shows tall
politicians are elected more often than their shorter counterparts
because people tend to believe tall politicians are more capable than
shorter politicians.xxi
Most people are unaware of social manipulations such as
judging a person by their looks or height by which their inherent
observations influence the choices they make.
This explains why political parties always seek
out tall, attractive candidates; Next time a political party picks a dumb
but attractive and tall candidate, youll know why. He or she has much
more of a chance to win against a strong, intelligent short person.
Some of the beliefs of other social manipulations include:
A favor for a favor. One must reciprocate favors.. Tall people make better bosses because they are smarter than
other people.
Tall people are happier than short people. Beautiful people are nicer than ugly people.

Minorities are less intelligent than other groups. Young adults are more productive than older adults Rich people are happier than poor people. Fat people are lazy. Poor people are more likely to commit crimes. Men are smarter than women. Attractive women are snobbish Blondes are dumb.
News Reporting
We also see passive manipulations in the news that we read,
simply by the way news phrases or reports are structured. Often a
conservative commentator will be referred to as a right wing
journalist which connotes a rigid and old-fashioned belief system.
However, a liberal journalist will have either no title or be called an
activist reporter connoting an active, open minded person. Neither
connotation is necessarily a valid observation of the writer. However,
giving readers a description forces them to perceive reporters in a
prejudicial way before viewing their writings.
Other phrases which manipulate our way of thinking are:
-

1. Home grown terrorist . Usually connotes a right wing person;however, many terrorists are anti-establishment, left
wing,whether theyre homegrown or not.xxii
2. Undocumented Workers. These are people who are in theUnited States illegally. Its like calling a bank robber an
undocumented customer.
3. Social Justice. Another term for redistribution of wealth.Taxing the rich and middle class to give back to the poor of all
countries.
4. Tax Cuts for the Rich. The Bush tax cuts covered all who paidtaxes; no such thing as just for the rich, although the rich pay
more in taxes than the middle class and poor.
5. Commercial chieftains. These are the CEOs and uppermanagers of corporations. When referred to as commercial
chieftains, it gives them a negative aspect of power grabbers.
6. Tea Baggers. No comment here7. Astro Turfers. Nancy Pelosi used this term when describing
tea partiers, suggesting that wealthy supporters were
contributing and running the protests. Thats an odd attack
coming from the party of Progressive promoter, George Soros.

8. Corporate welfare. Usually refers to tax cuts, which are thesource of growth and expansion for most companies.
9. Birthers. Negative title for anyone that wants to see thePresidents real birth certificate.
Passive Ridicule
Silence can be just as manipulative as verbal communications.
During the healthcare debate, Americans were excluded from the
issues. Representatives refused to discuss the details of the bills with
constituents that voted for them and pay their salaries. Its not only
abusive and offensive to our system of government ,its a personal
insult to those Americans that are affected by the sordid facts of higher
taxes and less care, reflected by health reform.
The administration also remains silent at times . All of the
Presidents speeches are perfectly staged and scripted with the perfect
message. At press conferences, the President will not take questions
from the press; if he does, theyre limited. This form of silence is
manipulating and abusive to Americans. After all, politicians work for
us!
Group Dynamics
Alinskys Rules for Radicals work because they are played
within the dynamics of a group setting.

Most people like to think of themselves as being informed
about current events. When asked a question, they respond with their
opinions. One-on-one discussions reveal thoughts based on levels of
education, experience and knowledge. Something different happens
when most individuals find themselves in a group setting; the dynamics
of intra-communications change the outcome.xxiii
The group process is different from a one-on-one discussion
because in group discussions participants interact and influence each
others responses. Assembled or pre-chosen groups, such as seniors,
Asians or homeowners, develop a number of dynamic processes that
separate them from an arbitrary collection of individuals.
In any group, people are worried about saying the wrong thing
or being laughed at; they are afraid of speaking too much or not
speaking enough. Group dynamics persuade individual opinions to
form aggregate conclusions, which may not directly represent the
opinions present. In some cases, this persuasion deters independent
opinions group members. This hesitancy to speak out is exactly how
proponents of Alinskys rules benefit. I know many Conservatives that
are afraid to speak out for fear of ridicule or verbal assault.

The Process
Within most groups, there is a facilitator or leader who usually
has a strong influence on the group due to his or her leadership role as
administrator of the groups beliefs. For Alinsky, this was the
Community Organizer. As with all inherent passive manipulations, the
leaders sex, race, age, income and appearance factor into the group
dynamics and how they feel about the facilitator. In the end, the
members of the group will base their opinions on the relevance and
credibility of the group leaders superficial qualities. If a group leader
is attractive , friendly and funny, the group will more likely agree with
that person or believe that person. They are less likely to find
credibility in a person who is too young, too old or unattractive.
When Barack Obama was hired to be a community organizer in
Illinois, he was chosen because he was Black. Gerald Kellman, who
hired him, thought the inner city residents could relate to someone
similar to themselves over a White organizer who was looked upon as
an outsider.
Manipulation is more easily accomplished through the process
of group dynamics than in one-on-one exchanges. Certain techniques,
like divide and conquer, criticizing a member, or just the fear of a
members reprimand, permits the leader to maneuver the group process

into drawing certain conclusions. In a group setting, individuals are
less likely to speak out or offer an opinion thats different from the
majority.
In 1972, Psychologist Irving Janis coined the term,
Groupthink,xxiv
Its not a surprise, as well find out in future chapters, that one
of Saul Alinskys tactics was to confuse the group. He knew that
confused groups are more likely to be controlled over educated
groups.
as a situation where a group makes faulty decisions
because internal pressures lead to a deterioration of mental efficiency,
reality testing and moral judgment. Groupthink is especially
vulnerable to manipulation when members are similar in background,
isolated from outside input, and maintain no clear rules for decision-
making. When a person is in a homogenous club, like a political or
religious association, members generally share the same beliefs, and
thus form the same conclusions.
