Course overview

The MEI at the University of Tasmania is designed to give individuals the creative, intellectual, and motivational skills necessary to create and identify new opportunities and to start their own businesses, or initiate new ventures within existing companies.

Students will engage with the teaching material in the classroom and through entrepreneurial project work, a field trip, and relationships with mentors.

A critical experiential learning component comes from guided project work with start-ups corporate venture where students will provide independent analysis of, and solutions to, problems confronting entrepreneurs and innovators operating in highly dynamic and uncertain environments. After observing and engaging with existing entrepreneurial ventures, students will embark on the development of their own start-up ideas within regional and global contexts, guided by academic staff and industry mentors.

To achieve their entrepreneurial goals, students will learn industry-specific knowledge from experts, in particular industrial sectors that best coincide with students’ venture ideas. Examples of possible sectors include travel and tourism, agribusiness/aquaculture, and technology.

Our Master of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (MEI) has been forged with the latest thinking in business and developed with input from leaders in entrepreneurship and successful startups.

Bring your passion for innovation to life

A pristine environmentSeparated from mainland Australia by the 240 kilometres (150 miles) stretch of Bass Strait, Tasmania is a land apart – a green island of wild, mountainous and beautiful landscapes; friendly, welcoming people; temperate climate; quality cool-climate wines and food; a spirited history; and a creative arts community – all wrapped up in a relaxed lifestyle.

More than 40% of the island is protected as World Heritage Area, national parks and reserves. And because Tasmania is so compact it is easy to walk through an ancient alpine meadow in the morning,

catch some action on the wild ski fields in the afternoon and be on a pure white beach for an early evening stroll.

Tasmania’s population supports a world-class symphony orchestra, some of the world’s best art and museums, a festival of island cultures, and a wild mid-winter festival that celebrates our Antarctic connections.

Tasmania is never crowded, and its historic towns and seaside villages are dispersed across an area about the size of Ireland or West Virginia. The average summer temperature is a comfortable 21º C (70º F), while winter’s average is a mild 12º C (52º F).̂
