From the Pastor…

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In his second Inaugural Address, March 4, 1865, just a little over a month before he would be assassinated, Abraham Lincoln uttered these immortal words: “With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right, as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in; to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle, and for his widow and his orphan—to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all na-tions.” Abraham Lincoln spoke those words at the end of a time in our nation's history when America almost did to herself what no one else has been able to do—destroy her. Though the war was over, the battle was not. Bitter-ness, rancor and anger were still at a fever pitch in this country. But Lincoln knew something that Jesus will teach us today, and that is that the only balm that can cure the wound of bitterness between enemies is the balm of love. Today’s readings explain the basis of Jewish and Christian morality, the holiness of the loving, merciful and compassionate One God. God’s chosen people were, and are, expected to be holy people sharing in God’s holi-ness by embodying His love, mercy and forgiveness. For Jesus, retaliation, or even limited vengeance, has no place in the Christian life, even though graceful acceptance of an offense requires great strength, discipline of character, as well as strengthening by God’s grace. The second part of today’s Gospel passage is the cen-tral part of the Sermon on the Mount. It presents the Christian ethic of personal relationships: love one’s neighbors and forgive one’s enemies. It tells us that what makes Christians different is the grace with which they treat others with loving kindness and mercy, even if they don’t deserve it. The Old Law never said to hate enemies, but that was the way some Jews understood it. Jesus commands that we are to love our enemies and pray for those who perse-cute us to demonstrate that we are children of a merciful, heavenly Father. A Christian has no personal enemies. If we only love our friends, we are no different from pagans or atheists. We choose to love, not because our enemies deserve our love, but because Jesus loves them so much that He died for them. We have in the Acts of the Apostles, the example of St. Stephen, the first martyr, who prayed for those who were in the act of putting him to death. Jesus demands that we should forgive, pardon and be generous whether or not our offenders deserve it, and even if we are not loved in return. He also tells us to pray for those who willfully cause us suffering, hardship and unhappiness.

Today’s Readings First Reading — Take no revenge and cherish no grudge; love your neighbor as yourself (Leviticus 19:1-2, 17-18). Psalm — The Lord is kind and merciful (Psalm 103). Second Reading — You are the temple of God, and holy (1 Corinthians 3:16-23). Gospel — Offer no resistance; love your enemies (Matthew 5:38-48). We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no re-venge and cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that message before, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called “practical realities of life.” Saint Paul warns us about being practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a fool,” because “the wisdom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19). This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no re-sistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek when you’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good. “So be perfect,” says Jesus, “just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (5:48).

Regulations on Fasting and Abstinence The Dual disciplines of fasting and abstinence have a long history in the Catholic Church. Going back to the early Church, the purpose behind the custom of self denial is not punishment; it is to simplify our lifestyles so that we created a certain emptiness. In this way, freed from all distractions, we are able to hear and respond to God’s continued call to conversion and holiness. ∗ Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday and Good

Friday by all Catholics between the ages of 18 to 59 years (inclusive). On days of fasting, one full meal is al-lowed. Two smaller meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to one’s needs, but to-gether they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted, but liquids are allowed.

∗ Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catho-lics who are 14 years of age and older. Ash Wednesday, all Fridays of Lent, and Good Friday are days of absti-nence.

Note: If a person is unable to observe the above regulations due to ill health or other serious reasons, they are urged to practice other forms of self denial that are suitable to their condition. Fasting, almsgiving, and prayer are the three traditional disciplines of Lent. The faithful and catechumens should un-dertake these practices seriously in a spirit of penance and preparation for baptism or of renewal of baptism at Easter.

Ash Wednesday Mass will be Celebrated on Wednesday, February 26th at 8:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. with distribution of ashes. Mass will also be celebrated in Spanish at 8:00 p.m.

Stewardship Reflections “For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” MATTHEW 5:20 The scribes and Pharisees lived according to the letter of the law and they used this to elevate themselves above the other people. Jesus is clear – it’s the love that you have in your heart that will get you to heaven. Simply following church rules out of obligation, not love, does not put you on the path to heaven. Desde el Escritorio del Párroco Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo! En su segundo discurso inaugural, el 4 de mar-zo de 1865, poco más de un mes antes de ser asesinado, Abraham Lincoln pronunció estas palabras inmortales: “Con malicia hacia ninguno; con cari-dad para todos; con firmeza en lo correcto, mientras Dios nos da a ver lo correcto, luchemos para terminar el trabajo en el que estamos; para curar las heridas de la nación, para cui-dar al que habrá llevado la batalla, y para su viuda y su huér-fano, para hacer todo lo que pueda lograr y apreciar una paz justa y duradera entre nosotros y con todas las naciones ".

Abraham Lincoln pronunció esas palabras al final de un tiempo en la historia de nuestra nación cuando Estados Uni-dos casi se hizo lo que nadie más pudo hacer: destruirla. Aunque la guerra había terminado, la batalla no. La amargu-ra, el rencor y la ira todavía estaban en un punto álgido en este país.

Pero Lincoln sabía algo que Jesús nos enseñará hoy, y es que el único bálsamo que puede curar la herida de amargura entre los enemigos es el bálsamo del amor.

Las lecturas de hoy explican la base de la moralidad judía y cristiana, la santidad del Dios único amoroso, misericor-dioso y compasivo. Se esperaba y se espera que las personas elegidas de Dios sean personas santas que compartan la san-tidad de Dios al encarnar su amor, misericordia y perdón. Para Jesús, las represalias, o incluso la venganza limitada, no tienen lugar en la vida cristiana, a pesar de que la aceptación graciosa de una ofensa requiere una gran fuerza, disciplina de carácter, así como el fortalecimiento por la gracia de Dios.

La segunda parte del pasaje evangélico de hoy es la parte central del Sermón del Monte. Presenta la ética cristiana de las relaciones personales: amar al prójimo y perdonar a los enemigos. Nos dice que lo que hace a los cristianos diferen-tes es la gracia con la que tratan a los demás con amor y bon-dad, incluso si no lo merecen.

La Ley Antigua nunca decía odiar a los enemigos, pero esa era la forma en que algunos judíos lo entendían. Jesús ordena que debemos amar a nuestros enemigos y orar por aquellos que nos persiguen para demostrar que somos hijos de un Padre celestial y misericordioso. Un cristiano no tiene enemigos. Si solo amamos a nuestros amigos, no somos di-ferentes de los paganos o ateos.

Elegimos amar, no porque nuestros enemigos merezcan nuestro amor, sino porque Jesús los ama tanto que murió por ellos. Tenemos en los Hechos de los Apóstoles, el ejemplo de San Esteban, el primer mártir, que rezó por aquellos que lo iban a matar.

Jesús exige que debemos perdonar y ser generosos, ya sea que los delincuentes lo merezcan o no, e incluso si no somos amados a cambio. También nos dice que recemos por aque-llos que voluntariamente nos causan sufrimiento, dificulta-des e infelicidad.

Reflexiones de administración Pastoral

"Pero yo te digo, ama a tus enemigos y reza por los que te persiguen ..." (Mateo 5:44) Ama a tus enemigos, más fácil decirlo que hacerlo, sin du-da. Pero, recuerde, el fundamento de la mayordomía es la oración. Cuando estamos en estrecha comunicación con Dios, abre nuestro corazón y desvía nuestra atención de "mí" y la acerca a Dios y a los demás. Nos permite tener un poco más de empatía por "nuestro enemigo". Cuando ora-mos por los demás, incluso "nuestros enemigos", tal vez también ablanda sus corazones.

Regulaciones sobre el ayuno y la abstinencia Las disciplinas duales del ayuno y la abstinencia tienen una larga historia en la Iglesia católica. Volviendo a la Iglesia primitiva, el propósito detrás de la costumbre de la abnegación no es el castigo; es para simplificar nuestros estilos de vida para que creemos un cierto vacío. De esta manera, liberados de todas las distracciones, podemos es-cuchar y responder al llamado continuo de Dios a la con-versión y la santidad. El ayuno se observará el Miércoles de Ceniza y el Viernes Santo por todos los católicos entre las edades de 18 a 59 años (inclusivos). En los días de ayuno, se permite una comida completa. Se pueden tomar dos comidas más pequeñas, suficientes para mantener la fuerza, de acuerdo con las necesidades de uno, pero juntas no deberían equi-valer a otra comida completa. No se permite comer entre comidas, pero se permiten líquidos. La abstinencia de la carne debe ser observada por todos los católicos que tienen 14 años de edad o más. Miércoles de Ceniza, todos los viernes de Cuaresma y Viernes Santo son días de abstinencia. Nota: Si una persona no puede cumplir con las regulacio-nes anteriores debido a problemas de salud u otras razones serias, se le insta a practicar otras formas de abnegación que sean adecuadas para su condición. El ayuno, la limosna y la oración son las tres disciplinas tradicionales de la Cuaresma. Los fieles y los catecúmenos deben emprender estas prácticas con seriedad en un espíri-tu de penitencia y preparación para el bautismo o para la renovación del bautismo en la Pascua.

Miércoles de ceniza La misa se celebrará el miércoles 26 de febrero a las 8:00 a.m. y 6:30 p.m. con distribución de cenizas. La misa se celebrará en español a las 8:00 p.m.

Apelación Pastoral Anual 2020 Hoy es nuestro fin de semana de compromiso para la Cam-paña Pastoral Anual 2020: SOMOS SAL Y LUZ, Viviendo el Evangelio a través de la Campaña Pastoral Anual. Se les pide a todos que se unan al Obispo Parkes y a todas las pa-rroquias y misiones de nuestra diócesis para hacer una pro-mesa o un regalo en beneficio de cada parroquia y, lo que es más importante, para los necesitados en los cinco conda-dos de nuestra diócesis. Cada regalo es valioso. A veces es difícil imaginar cómo un regalo podría hacer una diferencia en una organización del tamaño de nuestra diócesis, pero lo hace. Cada católico en cada parroquia, cuando está unido, puede avanzar en la misión de Cristo, amándose y sirvién-dose unos a otros y debemos recordar que Dios nos bendice a cada uno de nosotros todos los días y que no hay límite para su misericordia. Nadie puede hacer todo, pero todos pueden hacer algo. Nuestro enfoque no es el mismo regalo, sino el mismo sacrificio. Ser Su Sal y Luz nos llama a transformar la vida de los demás para el bien.
