Baptism.. Expectant parents are to par ticipate in the Baptism

preparation program offered in February, June and October. The

Baptisms are then scheduled for the second and fourth Sundays of the

month, after the 10:00 a.m. Mass

Marriage.. Arrangements must be made at least six months in

advance by contacting the parish pastor.

Anointing of the Sick.. (which was known as Extreme Unction or

Last Rites) has taken a different connotation since The Second Vatican

Council. The sacrament is celebrated not only for those who are dying,

but to those preparing for major surgery, the aged, and the sick. It is

time for the Church to pray for and with those who are ill and anoint

them with oil. The proper celebrant of this sacrament is a priest. Those

who desire to receive this sacrament are to contact Fr. Martin,

in advance.

Penance . . Saturday afternoon 3:15 p.m. until 3:45 p.m.

or by appointment

As members of God’s family, Christ the King Parish will always be a

welcoming community that comforts, shares its Catholic faith, and

inspires others.

Praised be Jesus Christ! I read recently that the average cost of a wedding in the U.S. is $26,444. I find this to be almost incredible. It’s no wonder that Pope Francis very sagely wrote in Amoris Laetitia, “Here let me say a word to fiancés. Have the courage to be differ-ent,” (pg. 135). The idea is to refrain from the big expensive wedding that puts a strain on everyone involved. Years ago I had a wedding that was very simple and it still ranks in my memory as one of the most beautiful and peaceful weddings I ever attended. Some will remember that the wedding in church was sparsely attended and that a small meal in the rectory with a few family members followed. It’s a good thing for our young couples today that the meal in the rectory is no longer fashionable – I think they’d be disappointed with my egg sandwiches. Just the same, today’s focus is more on the event than it is on the lifelong commitment that will require a lot of divine assistance. Pope Francis rightly points out that marriage is “a project to be worked on together, with patience, understanding, tolerance and generosity,” (Ibid, pg. 139). Our couples would be better served if the focus was on their vows and their relationship with God. Thankfully the Church is not complicit in the expense, as the suggested donation is $75.00 for a Catholic wedding (definitely the cheapest venue in town – just the way God wants it). The Church is more demanding when it comes to marriage preparation, however. Given the high rate of divorce, the Catholic Church exercis-es her motherhood by providing the type of formation that gives our young couples a better chance of overcoming adversity and ac-cepting the cross when it inevitably comes. We also require a course in Natural Family Planning (NFP) – this week we celebrate the gift of openness to God’s will when it comes to fertility and childbearing. NFP is a way of exercising responsible parenthood that remains al-ways open to God’s will for raising children. Many of our young cou-ples come with openness to learning this method because they’ve been convinced of the long list of negative consequences that ac-company the use of contraception (especially pernicious are the long-term effects of using the birth control pill, though you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who would openly admit this. One wonders why so many pills come on the market with great fanfare, then dis-appear, followed a year later by requests for evidence in a class-action suit against that pill once thought to be a panacea). In Amoris Laetitia Pope Francis quotes Humanae Vitae extensively – some of you will remember that Pope Paul VI wrote the latter document in 1968 as a condemnation of the use of contraception. He predicted widespread use of contraception would lead to the manipulation of our fertility in unnatural ways, greater disrespect for women (who would now be more “available” to satisfy the libido of unchaste men), inhumane government control policies (e.g. China’s draconian 1-child policy, enforced by abortion), and a spike in marital infidelity. Pope Paul VI was recently beatified because he had the courage to tell the truth when it was very fashionable to ignore it. Pope Paul VI was vilified for the last 10 years of his pontificate because that’s the way the world has always treated prophets. Today the tactic has changed but the goal is the same: to silence the Pope about things that make us uncomfortable because they challenge us to change. The good news is that by God’s grace we can change – Blessed John Henry Cardinal Newman said as much years ago: “To live is to change, to be perfect is to have changed often.”

May God grant all married couples an openness to His will, especially when it comes to the children He wants them to bear!

Verso alto! Blessed Pier Giorgio Frassati used these words when mountain climbing to encourage his friends – it means “to the top”. On July 4th a group of 4 of us attempted to summit Grey’s Peak in Colorado, and by the grace of God we made it. At 14,278 feet, it was my first “14’er” and what an amazing experience it was. Two of us also climbed to the top of nearby Torrey’s Peak (elev. 14, 275) – that for me was the proverbial “straw that breaks the camel’s back”. I was absolutely exhausted by the time we got back to the jeep. Because I underestimated the stamina it takes to climb at such altitudes, I was not able to climb Mount Elbert the next day – that will have to wait until next year. In the meantime, if you see me climbing the 8 floors at the hospital, don’t be afraid to yell “verso alto” – I promise I’ll take it in stride! Father Martin

ANNOUCEMENTS

Pope Francis’ Year of Mercy Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, You have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him, show us your face and we will be saved. Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief. L et us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified. You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.
