FAITH FORMATION & YOUTH MINISTRY Please check your email with information concerning our incoming Director of Faith Formation & Youth Ministry.

Remember to pick up your family’s pictures from First Communion in the reception office, located by the parking lot door in church.

BISHOP’S APPEAL UPDATE - Thank you to the 192 families & individuals for their $87,978 in contributions. A balance of $21,593 remains. If you have not yet given, please prayerfully consider what is within your means. Envelopes are in the chairs and at both entrances to church.

LOCAL AREA DISASTER RELIEF ~ At Bishop Scharfenberger’s request, a collection will be taken up in our parish through the month of July to aid those devastated by the storms that hit parts of the diocese over the last few weeks. A basket to receive donations is placed beneath the crucifix in the sanctuary. If you wish to write a check, please make it payable to “St. Vincent DePaul” with a notation in the memo line: 2017 Albany Diocese Disaster Response. This collection will be forwarded to Catholic Charities which is already responding to the needs of those severely affected by these storms.

PETER’S PENCE/HOLY FATHER COLLECTION This second collection on July 29-30 provides Pope Francis with the funds to carry out his charitable works around the world. Your donations will benefit our sisters and brothers on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression and disasters. Thank you for your support.

Welcome, Carlos Baez ~ If you happen to be around the Parish Center during the week, please say hello to our new custodian, Carlos Baez. Carlos joined St. Vincent’s Staff in late June.

Thank You to all of the businesses that

advertise in our bulletin.

Dear Parishioners: As many of you know I am taking an extended sabbatical to complete a number of writing projects concerning Post-Conciliar church architecture. My research will build on the work I have been doing for the past 45 years. Of course, this award winning St. Vincent de Paul church will be featured. Although the entire schedule is hard to determine it is important for me to take sufficient time to complete the tasks ahead. I am so grateful for the many notes I have received wishing me well.

Peace be with you. Fr. Vosko

CREATION CARE TEAM

I remember when I was a kid, I couldn’t wait until school was over in June, and it wasn’t long before I was feeling bored and had nothing to do! Does that sound familiar? Actually, the summer months are a great time to leave the TV, tablets, smart phones, video games, etc. and get outside in nature as much as possible. In fact, the fate of our environment depends on the next generation falling in love with nature enough so that they will do all they can to protect it. That doesn’t let adults off the hook. We need to act now so future generations will have a safe and beautiful earth to live on. Here are some simple suggestions for how kids can have fun while reducing, reusing, and recycling. Do you know how many minutes it takes you to take a shower or brush your teeth? Kids, why not create a chart for a whole week listing all your family member names. Time the showers they each take for a week, including your own. Write the minutes on the chart. Then create a certificate for the member of your family who took the shortest shower. You could make a similar chart for washing dishes or brushing teeth. When I lived in Bolivia, the family I lived with put plastic pans in the shower to catch the extra water. They were in the midst of such a draught they never wasted water and put the shower water on the grass or garden. I was so moved by their example I have never forgotten this common sense action. You could save shower water also, or take it as your job to save rainwater in a barrel or containers to use on the grass or the flowers. Often, in the summer, kids picnic or swim at lakes, ponds or streams. While you are there, look to see if there is litter in the water. If it is safe to do so, collect the litter and throw it out or recycle. Remember to cut plastic 6-pack holders apart so that birds, ducks and fish are not harmed or caught by them. Be aware at parks or campgrounds to do the same. Summer is also a great time to observe and listen to all the many birds of our region. During summer you could wake up just before dawn and listen to their songs. You could help them by making different kinds of bird feeders. Ask your mom for the cardboard milk cartons. Wash it well and then cut out a window on all four sides. Close the top and put a hanger or string through the top to hang it from a tree. At the bottom put a hole to insert a twig or stick as a perch and add your favorite seed. Then watch and see how many different kinds of birds come to feed. Maybe you can get a book from the library that would help you identify what kinds of birds they are. Recycling used pie plates could make another kind of feeder. Attach some string from three sides. Birds can perch on the sides of the plate to reach the seed in the middle. If you find pine cones near your home, spread some peanut butter on them and sprinkle with seed, then hang for birds to enjoy. Arts and crafts are some fun activities for the summer. Ask mom or dad for the tin cans from soup or tuna. Have them take off the sharp tops then wash them and remove the labels. You can use construction paper or wrapping paper, fabric or felt to wrap around and decorate to make very special planters for flowers or vegetables and herbs. Recycle a gallon plastic milk container to use for watering. With a hammer and nail, pound some holes in the screw off top. Fill with water and put the top back on. You’ll have a nice gentle spray to water the flowers. Trees use the carbon dioxide humans and our activity gives off. During the summer why not look on the Internet for organizations that give away seedling trees to plant. Then make sure you give them water and protection until they have taken root and grow tall. When you go shopping for food or toys, look for products that have the least amount of packaging. No packaging is best, like when you buy one apple. Most cereals have bags inside a box. Encourage your family to buy bulk cereals that need just one bag. When you go grocery shopping bring your bags from home instead of using store bags. That could be your job, to organize them and have them ready when you go shopping. There is so much to do, I hardly know where to stop. Just be aware of saving resources and energy whenever possible and love the earth, our only home, so let’s take care of it. Maybe you could write a letter to St. Vincent’s Creation Care Committee about your prescription for a healthy planet.

Enjoy your summer - be safe always - be creative and have fun! Sister Cathy Kruegler
