Baptism - Please join us this weekend in welcoming into Saint Paul Community through the Sacrament of Baptism: Brendan James Blades and Odilia Louise Gallagher.

I left off last week speaking about Henry VIII. His burial place is the chapel royal of St. George at Windsor Castle. As I said, it becomes very easy to cast Henry only in the light of a tyrant and everyone else around him as victims, including St. Thomas More. The sad truth of this time in English history is that it was a period of almost perpetual conflict between rival factions. In the hundred years that preceded the death of Henry VIII in 1547, England was in a state of civil war for most of the first half of this era. When Henry’s father took the throne, Henry VII, the Tudor dynasty brought stability but the scars of the past always lurked in the background. The country was therefore willing to suffer much in order to remain stable. From nobles to churchmen to large portions of the growing middle class, the idea of returning or even possibly returning to a time of factional conflict was unthinkable. Only a few would stand in the way of the king and they did so in peril of their lives. When Henry made his break with the pope, he did it for political reasons. At least in his mind this seems to be the case. For some in England, in particular St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, his actions were also destructive to the Body of Christ for theological reasons. The reformation era that had begun with Luther and his theology was in England captured at first with politics as the central focus. For over a 1000 years, from the time of Constantine, the Church insisted on and had made political and theological ideas part of the same story. This union created what became known as Christendom. With Henry that notion began to crack and fracture the fabric of a common Catholic identity. St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher saw something that the vast majority of people at this time were unwilling to admit or be concerned about. They believed that the voice of the Church in the world of politics was not a nuisance but an anchor for the life of faith in the common culture. In our times, we are so used to the slogan that religion and politics does not mix that we fail to examine the truth of the statement. They do mix. The living Church must and always engage the common political culture. To think otherwise is to deny Christ and make our faith a waist land of personal speculation. Continued …

From the Pastor’s Desk

These were some of the things that I thought about at the time and after my visit to the chapel. Ironically, I left the chapel and headed to the state apartments for a quick visit. Rather than immersing myself in thoughts of faith, I wanted to see the world of English royalty. This part of Windsor Castle can easily be seen as a total disconnect from a pilgrims journey. I did though have a good reason for going. The last time I was at the castle, this area was not open to the public. Destroyed by fire, it took years to restore it and on my last visit only a portion of the restoration had been completed. Since I had missed this part and being practical about the price of admission, the tour made sense. However, fatigue was really setting in, so I dashed through and got back to the train station to be back in London just as the insanity of rush hour was beginning. I’ll tell you more on that next week.

The Altar Flowers this weekend are in loving memory of Michelle Baluch with love from Fred and Andrea Chite.

This is a huge endeavor, we would like individuals or groups (friends, neighbors, church groups) to pick a basket theme and donate items to fill it. Bring items to the rectory M-F from 9-5 only (no basket necessary) labeled with at least 1 person’s name/contact info. Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well being and affects how we think, act and feel. It helps us determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Biological factors such as genes, brain chemistry, life experiences (trauma or abuse), and family history of mental health problems contribute to mental health problems. Mental illness affects all ages, incomes, educational levels, races and cultural backgrounds. Help is available, there are many different treatment modalities. With early diagnosis and treatment many people recover or manage symptoms to lead a productive life. For info and warning signs visit: www.cdc.gov, www.webmd.com, www.nami.org, www.samhsa.gov.
