SUCCESS FOR MARWOOD HILL GARDENS
Marwood Hill Gardens achieved great success at the Royal Horticultural Society’s 2013 National Rhododendron and Camellia Show, held at RHS Rosemoor at the end of April 2013. They won the prestigious Williams Challenge Trophy for the best camellia display in the Show, and the photograph shows Malcolm Pharoah receiving the trophy from Elizabeth Banks DL, President of the Royal Horticultural Society. They also won first prizes in two other Camellia classes. Judith Johnson's arrangements of blooms from the garden won two First prizes and one Second prize in the Floral Display classes. As well as these prizes there were also two second prizes and a third. A very proud day for the team at Marwood Hill Gardens.
15th June - National Garden Schemes Day - all day. Marwood Hill has been supporting the NGS for over
35 years. All admission income will be donated to the charity.

Police Report: PCSO Kingdon said there were no reported

crimes) were 10 thefts, 5 burglaries, 4 criminal damage. He
stressed that many of these crimes were committed by the
same persons on the same occasions.
Speed checks have been carried out in Guineaford and
Prixford in a response to a letter from a member of the public.
District Councillor Report: Cllr Tucker mentioned the house
insulation programme and the CCD oil-purchase programme.
Finance: The Clerk reported that the accounts are still with
the Internal Auditor but they were agreed subject to
audit. The balance of £11,838.53 still includes about £2,600
of P3 Scheme funds which have not been used due to the wet

regarding the clearing of streams.
Community Hall: Cllr May said the Management Committee
had been meeting and that an old plan had been discovered
which showed the access road to the school as a "public
road". This should prove that there is no longer a problem
about the access road.
He also said that the Committee/school have agreed that the
proposed new hall can be used by the community from 14.00
onwards during term-time.
Local Plan Part 3: Following the presentation and discussion
at the AGM, the Council agreed that Marwood should be recognised as a "Small Village" with no settlement
boundaries and a criteria-based policy. If this is adopted it
will mean a 5% growth over 20 years, ie. 15 dwellings. A
draft response must be seen and agreed by Members before
forwarding to NDC. The Clerk will prepare the response.
County Elections: The Council and Clerk congratulated Cllr
Andrea Davis on being re-elected for the next four years and
look forward to working with her.
The meetings closed at 20.42

Four Marwoodians Become Filmstars for a Day
On, Tuesday May 7th Beatrice, Vi, Mike and I drove to The Plough at Bickington for a mystery tour and day out organized by Devon Voice. On arrival at 2pm we were greeted with coffee, enormous sandwiches and other goodies. We were joined by 13 more oldies and a Norwegian TV camera crew working with our generation all around Britain as well as other countries comparing and contrasting the changes that had taken place in our lifetimes. We were expected to behave like a stereotype bunch of British oldies on an outing. The Norwegians suggested that we sing the sort of songs oldies usually sing on coach trips. I'm pleased to say that a few stalwarts took up the challenge but it soon faded as the few exhausted their repertoire of suitable songs We arrived in Westward Ho! about 4pm and disembarked at The Village Inn where we had a choice of roast beef or fish and chips for a late lunch. (Good old English fare). We also had the choice of red or white wine followed by a selection of puddings and coffee. Throughout the meal the Norwegian camera duo moved amongst us recording our every move and interviewing a few of the group about personal thoughts and attitudes to the modem world compared to the past. At 6'ish all 17 of us straggled slowly down to the sea front. It was rather chilly, with a sneaky breeze, but being British we pressed on regardless. Seventeen colourful deckchairs awaited us on the promenade and we were again filmed as happy oldies on a day out. After a stroll back to the Village Inn we were treated to a cheerful and very good solo guitarist playing 60's music and songs. Meanwhile we were all given Bingo cards and joined in the fun. The prizes were fun and plentiful. To cap an excellent day out a number of the younger oldies, unable to resist a chance to dance and joined by the two filmmakers, finished the day in festive mood. The completed film is to be shown on Norwegian Television next January. We have been promised a copy and enjoyed our experience; hosted by two friendly, charming Norwegians who filmed the whole time but who, after a time, became invisible.
