Once the gardening season is over there is always a sense of accom-plishment for the har-vest. For our family being in the greenhouse industry, winter is also a chance to finally take a break. But over the years I have been studying dif-ferent methods of win-ter gardening. Grocery costs are becoming more of problem every year, especially produce. I still want to grow fresh vegetables for my family and for you our beloved clients and had a deep belief that somehow on God’s green earth that there is a way to grow something without needing to take out a loan to pay my gas bill. Now go ahead and say it, “Benjamin, how can you grow food in the win-ter?” The keys to doing

this are to understand which types of plants can grow in very cold temps, what the plants need to survive and thrive and what factors to avoid in bragging to someone that you grew something out-side in the winter. Let’s begin. Certain plants can grow in freezing temper-atures, many different kinds of greens, carrots, beets, radish, turnips and more. Because we are growing them in very cold temperatures they simply won’t grow as fast, but nonetheless will still grow. So selecting good seed is first. We have a ready selection at Grace Gardens if you are inter-ested. Next you must build a simple green-house or crop tunnel which is basically plas-tic over a simple frame. You must keep both wind

and snow off the plants because those two ele-ments will destroy your success. Much like how your house protects you at night. Plant the seeds in close proximity and cover the rows will a plastic blanket. Think of how you stay warm under your covers at night, even though it’s cold in the room. Next we will need to keep the roots warm enough to grow, so now you will need a basic

understanding of com-posting. Compost can produce temperatures as high as ninety degrees even in the dead of win-ter. While the tops of the plants can survive and go down to minus five degrees but must not be touched by wind or snow, the roots must remain higher than plus five to prevent being stunted. A good layer of compost will ensure more than enough root bed heat,

but you must careful not to use much water. I like to use fresh compost on the bottom layer, cov-ered by a layer of decom-posed wood chips as they retain the heat well and plenty of moisture. The soil and compost is the heat source and the sun will fill in the blanks for added heat and photo-synthesis. In other words, the plants will become very cold, but will not receive stress or at least not much of it. So we have an outer layer of protection, and inner layer of protection, and a ready and constant heat source from below the surface. Much like you are the heat source under your blankets. All these materials are a minimal investment and will return very sweet tasting (like you wouldn’t

believe!) vegetables. Of course if you have need for some assur-ance you could place a small heater set at zero degrees. You also have winter planting of garlic and many others to plant in the fall for over win-tering. Next week I will talk about indoor grow-ing as well and how aqua-ponics can solve your grocery bill quite nicely.

Sugar substitute to equal 3/4 cup sugar, suit-able for baking

1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 cup fat-free yogurt1/3 cup fat-free mayon-

naise

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

3/4 cup water1 cup miniature

marshmallows6 tablespoons pur-

chased graham cracker crumbs

1/4 cup mini chocolate chips

1. Heat oven to 350 F. Spray a 9-by-13-inch cake pan with butter-flavored cooking spray.

2. In a large bowl, com-bine flour, sugar substi-tute, cocoa, baking soda and baking powder. In a medium bowl, combine yogurt, mayonnaise, vanilla extract and water. Add liquid mixture to dry mixture. Mix gently just to combine.

3. Spread batter even-ly into prepared cake pan. Bake for 15 minutes. Evenly sprinkle marsh-mallows over top of par-

tially baked brownies.4. In a small bowl,

combine cracker crumbs and chocolate chips. Sprinkle crumb mixture evenly over top. Continue baking for 10 to 15 min-utes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

5. Place cake pan on a

wire rack and let set forat least 10 minutes. Cutinto 16 brownies. Makes 8(2 each) servings.

Dauphin’s Countryfest, Canada’s longest running country music festival, is pleased to announce that country music star Dwight Yoakam will play the Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries Main Stage on Sunday night.

Pioneering honky-tonker Yoakam began his major label record-ing career 30 years ago, with distinctive vocals accented with his Kentucky croon. His latest album, Second Hand Heart, was self-produced, and reflects where he’s been, and where he’s going.

Yoakam played Countryfest once before, in 2004. Now fans will get a second chance to see him in 2016.

“Dwight Yoakam per-formed a fantastic show the last time he was at Countryfest, and we’re

December 4, 2015; Thom Weir, senior agronomist with Farmers Edge, was recently elected Vice Chair of the International Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) Board.

“It is humbling to be selected by a group of such highly respect-ed industry-leading peers,” says Weir. “The CCA play a key role in implementing agronom-ically and environment-ally sound nutrient, crop, pest, soil and environ-mental management plans, and I am proud to be a part of this leader-ship for global agricul-ture.”

The CCA program operates throughout the United States, Mexico and most regions in Canada. Coordinated by the American Society

of Agronomy (ASA), the CCA is administered at the local level by state or regional boards.

Weir has been a mem-ber of CCA since 1996. In that time, he has served on the Prairie Provinces Board and represented Western Canada on the International CCA Board. In addition to his new duties with CCA, Weir will continue his work as an agronomist with Farmers Edge, where he leads agro-nomic solutions for highly productive crops, resulting in healthy bot-tom lines and back-to-back years of sustainable growth for the company’s farm clients.

During his tenure as Vice Chair, Weir will work toward raising the profile of CCA certifica-tion – the high standard

of agricultural expertise and business ethics it represents, as well as the value it brings to grow-ers and agribusinesses – among national and international industry stakeholders.

Q: Can you tell me when my favorite CW shows will be back? I’ve been waiting patient-ly for “The Vampire Diaries” and “The 100” to return. -- Nancy G., via email

A: The CW recently announced the pre-miere/return dates for four of its dramas: “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow” will premiere Thursday, Jan. 21, along with the season premiere of “The 100.” “The Originals” and

“The Vampire Diaries” return from winter hiatus on Friday, Jan. 29.

Q: I was reading that “American Crime” would be back for another sea-son, but I was wondering how, since the miniseries wrapped up its story with

the first season. -- Pilar T., Hartford, Connecticut

A: “American Crime” is going the way of “American Horror Story” in that each season will tackle a different story-line and subject matter, while retaining many of the original actors in entirely new roles. Season two of “American Crime,” which premieres Wednesday, Jan. 6, on ABC, will see the return of Felicity Huffman, Timothy Hutton, Regina King, Elvis Nolasco, Richard Cabral and Lili Taylor, all playing differ-ent roles in an equally dramatic and intense sto-ryline as season one.

Season two focuses on Taylor Blaine (played

by “Falling Skies” alum Connor Jessup), with issues of sexual orienta-tion and socioeconomic disparity coming to a roil when lurid pho-tos of him are posted on social media follow-ing a high-school party. Circumstances become more complicated when Taylor accuses two play-ers on an elite private high-school’s champion-ship basketball team of drugging, assaulting and then posting the pictures of him online. While the two schools at the center of the story are worlds apart in status, the lives of the students and teach-ers at both become inex-tricably linked.

Regina King gave me

the scoop about season two, telling me: “When you have John Ridley at the helm, it’s kind of hard to go wrong. From an actor’s perspective, you know the words are going to be something juicy. You know that he is going to write and bring people in to write fearlessly. I’m embracing the fact that I have the opportunity to have a voice, even though it’s through a character, on a subject that is very, very real but not talked about. The idea of men being raped -- there are men who were boys that this has happened to and they have never told anyone their entire lives, and they are jacked-up men right now because

they were so ashamed of something that was done against them. I think it’s huge what John is tack-ling.”

cloves1/8 teaspoon salt1 large egg yolk2 cups blanched

almonds, groundAbout 1 cup red can-

died cherries, each cut in half

1. Heat oven to 350 F. In large bowl, with mixer at low speed, beat butter with confectioners’ sugar until blended. Increase speed to high; beat until light and creamy. At low speed, beat in flour, cin-namon, nutmeg, cloves, salt and egg yolk. Knead in almonds.

2. Roll dough into 1-inch balls (dough will be crumbly). Place balls, 2 inches apart, on ungreased large cookie sheet. Gently press a cherry half on top of each ball. Bake 15 minutes, or until bottoms of cookies are lightly browned.

3. With wide spatula, transfer cookies to wire rack to cool. Repeat with remaining dough and cherries. Makes about 6 dozen cookies.

Creamy Fudge1 can (14 ounces)

sweetened condensed milk

1 pound semisweet chocolate, chopped

1 ounce unsweetened chocolate, chopped

1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/8 teaspoon salt1. Line 8-by-8-inch

metal baking pan with foil, extending foil above edge at 2 sides.

2. In 2-quart saucepan, combine condensed milk and chocolates. Cook

over medium-low heat 5 minutes or until choco-lates melt and mixture is smooth, stirring con-stantly.

3. Remove saucepan from heat; stir in vanilla and salt. Pour chocolate

mixture into prepared pan; spread evenly. Refrigerate until firm, at least 4 hours or overnight.

4. Remove fudge from pan by lifting edges of foil. Invert onto cut-ting board; discard foil.

Cut fudge into 8 strips, then cut each strip cross-wise into 8 pieces. Store fudge in tightly covered container, with waxed paper between layers, at room temperature up to 1 week, or in refrigerator

up to 1 month. Makes 64 pieces.

HOLLYWOOD -- Has the world gone mad? Talk is that Caitlyn Jenner has been quoted as say-ing, “These few weeks as Caitlyn has been a great experience for me, but being a woman is hard. I’m 65 and I just don’t feel like having to learn a new way of life. I feel like Caitlyn was just a phase, and I am glad I realized that before get-ting gender reassign-ment surgery.”

If this is true, she/he should be glad they insist you live as a woman for a full year before having ‘spare parts’ removed.

Not long ago Jenner accepted the Arthur Ashe ESPY Award for courage, to which he allegedly said, “Just because I am transi-tioning back to the old me doesn’t mean I was not courageous.” The backlash is bound to be enormous if this comes to pass. Let’s exam-ine why Jenner may have done what some already are calling the greatest publicity stunt since The Golden Age of Hollywood.

Jenner was the great-est athlete of his day after

winning a gold medal in the decathlon at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. He became a mati-nee idol because of his STUDLY good looks. He was married to Chrystie Crownover from 1972-81, Linda Thompson from 1981-86 and Kris Kardashian from 1991-2015. The past 20 years saw him being pushed into the background as the Kardashian girls rose to prominence.

Jenner tried plastic surgery to regain his looks, but instead start-ed looking very strange. His plan to transition to womanhood crushed the “K” girls and made him important again, and he allegedly has reignited the flame with one of his

ex-wives. Supposedly, E Channel will pay him $2 million to film an eight-part series of him “Getting Back to Bruce.” True or not, it’ll be fun to see what happens next.

Add Brad and Angelina Pitt’s “By the Sea” to the list of films that tanked (it earned $932,597 but cost $10 mil-

lion to make). The film, written and directed by Jolie-Pitt, also was produced by Brad and Angelina. They’ll have to make their money in DVD/Blu-ray sales.

B e n e d i c t Cumberbatch will be back on BBC as Sherlock Holmes. First, a special film, “The Abominable

Bride,” will air New Year’s Day. In April, film-ing will commence on season 4 for a 2017 airing. In the meantime, he’ll be seen in “Zoolander 2,” with Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Kristen Wiig and Justin Bieber, due out in February, and the remake of the 1978 Marvel Comic super-

hero film “Dr. Strange,” with Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Rachel McAdams, arriv-ing November 2016. Finally, there’s “Jungle Book: Origins,” with Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale, due October 2017. That’s a whole “Batch” of “Cumber”some things to watch.

PICKS OF THE WEEK“Pan” (PG) -- The

beloved boy who flies about and never grows up gets an extra-helping of CG in this live-action origin story. Peter starts as a magical orphan, kidnapped by the evil pirate Blackbeard (Hugh Jackman) and taken to Neverland, where pirate ships fly and green-screens cover everything. Peter’s parents were special in some way, so he’s supposed to lead the Natives (including Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily) in an all-out revo-lution against the sky

pirates. Our young hero also befriends James Hook (Garrett Hedlund), a dashing young oaf with a horrendous accent.

It just doesn’t fly right. All of the backstory, world-building and by-the-numbers journey get in the way of actual won-der and adventure. Like, did you know pixie dust is called pixum and it’s a valued commodity in the Neverland economy? Yeah. The pirate-fighting, never-aging boy-adven-

turer was already good enough for audiences to enjoy, but here he’s too weighed down to fly.

“Pawn Sacrifice” (PG-13) -- In the 1970s, American Bobby Fischer presented a threat to Russia’s dominance of international chess. As the Cold War got cold-er, the world looked to Iceland and a series of matches between Fischer (Tobey Maguire) and Russian champion Boris

Spassky (Liev Schrieber). Rather high-strung and wracked with inner demons, Fischer became a larger-than-life figure as his mental state fluc-tuates under the weight of several mega-tons of international pressure.

Maguire gives a solid performance, even though his real-life inspi-ration is boiled down to a “tortured genius” arche-type. Schreiber also is a force to be reckoned with, contrasting his opponent’s paranoia with frosty confidence. This based-on-a-true-story film doesn’t change the game, but shows some interesting moves.

“Queen of Earth” (R) -- For Catherine (Elizabeth Moss), a trip to her best friend’s country retreat was supposed to be a welcome reprieve from

her spiral of mental anguish. She’s still reel-ing from her father’s sui-cide, and her boyfriend just dumped her in the meanest way possible. Her friend, Virginia (Katherine Waterston), is more abrasive than sup-portive; she knows her friend and how to hurt her. Catherine’s men-tal breakdown plays out like a slow-motion train-wreck, speckled with bits of ultra-dark humor. Moss’ talent is undeni-able, and director Alex Ross Perry gives her the lens she needs to focus it.

“Dragon Blade” (R) -- In this super-budget-ed Chinese historical epic, Roman conquer-ors square off with Han-Dynasty heroes in a crucial clash of blade, bone and bronze. The Silk Road is a vital trade

route linking the empires of the East and West. Roman general Lucius (John Cusack, looking tired per usual) teams up with Chinese leader Huo An (Jackie Chan, still kicking butt) to stave off the murderous Tiberius (Adrien Brody, really hamming it up this time). As a lover of history and martial arts and all three of those leads, I really wanted this movie to live up to its epic ambitions, but like so many other sweeping sword-stories, it gets lost somewhere along the road.

It’s the sweet scent of pine, the taste of hot choc-olate dashed with cinna-mon, and the secure feel-ing of being around fam-ily and friends that are the ingredients of child-hood holiday memories that the four Peterson sisters captured at their recent semiannual get-together at Bekki’s house. Raised in Glenview,

Illinois, they recall the fun of gathering for the traditional “December Family Night” at their

church to make beautiful Christmas wreaths.

Their mom, Evonne, who passed away 15 years ago and would have celebrated her birthday on the day they gathered, “would love that they chose to make wreaths as a nod to their past, this time using pinecones from a friend’s yard, and

recycled odds and ends sourced from stored holi-day decoration boxes,” said Sonja.

“And there’s no doubt she would be pleased that we continue to get together. We rely on each other and support one another more since we lost her,” added Christi.

And they do just that. No kids, no spouses, no cellphones. “We usu-ally do something when we meet,” says Sara. “It might be making gifts for friends and decorations for our homes, or trying out a new recipe togeth-er. It’s in the doing that we let loose and candidly share what’s up in our lives, reminisce and, for sure, we always laugh. A lot.”

A person’s mind can play a large role in how quickly he or she is able to lose weight. Exercise and diet alone may not be enough, and positive thinking can provide the extra boost some people need.

A Harvard study found that mind over matter may extend to weight loss as well. The study followed 84 clean-ing women, half of whom were told that their phys-ically demanding jobs met the requirements for exercise as set by the Surgeon General, while the other half weren’t given any information about their activity level and calorie burn.

After a month’s time, researchers discovered that the group of women who were told that their work activity was good for them reduced their body fat, waist-to-hip ratio and body mass index. These partici-pants had not changed anything else about their daily exercise and eating habits. The other group of women who were

given no positive rein-forcement did not lose any weight.

DEAR DR. ROACH: Would you explain the proper method for tak-ing blood pressure? One instruction I read says to use the left arm. However, another shows the health-care worker taking blood pressure in the left arm and patients using automatic cuffs on the right arm. The right subclavian artery comes off the ascending aorta closer to the heart than

the left subclavian artery, which suggests that the logical method would be to use the right arm. However, the self-assess-ment health stations at the grocery store and the YMCA are set up to use the left arm to measure blood pressure. -- C.R.

ANSWER: There usu-ally is only a small dif-ference between the left and right arm blood pres-sure, so it is OK to use whichever arm is easiest for you. There are some automatic blood pressure cuffs that are designed to be on the left arm, prob-ably because most right-handed people have an easier time manipulat-ing the cuff with their right hand. A human is more accurate than most

machines.If there is a significant

(greater than 10 mm Hg) and consistent difference in the left arm from the right, that could indicate an abnormality such as a coarctation of the aorta. This is a congenital con-striction of the aorta, the major blood vessel of the body. Fortunately, this is pretty uncommon to find in adults nowadays.

I am concerned for someone I love. This person has a history of addiction and mental-health issues. Would they be safe if a person didn’t have an addiction history or mental-health issues?

ANSWER: That’s a very frightening list in a person with addiction issues. The likelihood of a significant interac-tion is high, even in a healthy volunteer. I could be wrong, and maybe a psychiatrist with much more knowledge than I have of your loved one has prescribed this, but the list looks to me like prescriptions from mul-tiple doctors, none of whom knew what the oth-ers were prescribing, and each of whom was try-ing to help a significant psychiatric issue. It also may be that some of these medicines were meant to be discontinued when a new one was started.

Literally every one of those 11 medications can cause sedation.

My best advice would be to bring your loved one and ALL of the medi-cine to ONE doctor, who can pare down the med-ications to a safer and more manageable level.

Herbal vinegars are a wonderful gift from the kitchen. They’re deli-cious when sprinkled on salads, vegetables or broiled meats. You can use either fresh or dried herbs, or fresh or frozen fruit when preparing the vinegars. Pouring heat-ed vinegar over herbs that have been slightly crushed helps extract the flavor of the herbs. Almost any type of vin-egar with at least 5 per-cent acidity may be used,

except malt vinegar. The flavor of malt vinegar is too strong to blend well with herbs or fruits.

After preparation, herbal vinegars should be stored for one to three weeks in a cool, dark place to allow the flavors to mingle. Herbal vinegars will keep indefi-

nitely, and they make great homemade gifts. (Do not make herbal oils for gifts. Unlike com-mercial oils, homemade herbal oils lack enough acidity to preserve them. Homemade herbal oils also tend to turn rancid and may cause botulism.)

Decorative bottles like those used for wine or bottled water are perfect containers for your herb-al vinegars. Sterilize the bottles or jars with boil-ing water before using them. Line bottle caps or jar lids with a piece of foil, or place a piece of foil over the mouth of the jar or bottle to pre-vent the cap from rust-ing. Bottles with a cork or cruets also are perfect containers.

Place a decorative label on the bottle or

jar describing the herb-al ingredients used. Containers may be dec-orated by tying a raffia bow, a few herb sprigs or dried flowers around the neck of the bottle or jar. Wrapping strands of brightly colored yarn or strips of festive wrapping paper that have been dipped in glue also add a decorative touch.

HERBAL VINEGAR2 cups vinegar (dis-

tilled white, cider or wine)

4 to 6 tablespoons of fresh or dried herbs (tar-ragon, chive, basil, mar-joram, dill, sage, rose-mary, savory, mustard or bay leaves, in combina-tion or alone)

1. If using fresh herbs, rinse them and pat dry

with a paper towel. Bruise herbs with a mor-tar and pestle or by roll-ing over them once or twice with a rolling pin. Place herbs in a steril-ized jar.

2. In a small, non-cor-rosive saucepan, heat vinegar until it is warm to the touch, but not hot. If using a microwave, place vinegar in a glass bowl and heat on low power for about 30 seconds. Pour the vinegar over the herbs. Let the mixture cool.

3. Place a piece of foil over the mouth of the jar and seal it tightly. Label the jar and place the herbal vinegar in a cool, dark place for at least 7 days and up to 3 weeks so that the flavors have a chance to mingle.

4. After the flavors

have infused, place sev-eral layers of cheesecloth inside a funnel and strain the vinegar into a steril-ized bottle or jar. Leave at least an inch free at the top of the bottle if inserting a cork or glass stopper. Makes 2 cups.

DEAR JESSICA: You told them, and thank you! The holiday season, with plenty of parties, family and food, can be hectic for everyone, but it’s important to moni-tor pets and make sure they’re kept away from potentially harmful items.

Many foods, not just chocolate but onions, grapes and raisins, nuts, avocados and other com-mon holiday foods can cause house pets great harm. Store them well out of reach and keep pets out of the kitchen when cooking, and away from serving tables. A more extensive list is available from the Humane Society of the United States.

Christmas tree orna-ments can potentially be harmful. Cats love knocking down glass ornaments and also may accidentally ingest tinsel or other shiny strands. Dogs may gnaw on inter-esting packages or break into gift boxes of candy or fruit.

Even plants need to be kept out of reach: poin-settias, for example, are toxic to cats.

To minimize risk, place breakable orna-ments higher in the tree and put plants well out of reach. During parties or dinners, place your pets in a separate area of the house with bedding, food and water, and check on them occasionally. (This also is helpful in keeping pets’ stress levels down.)

Nail biting, also known as onychophagia, is a common habit that affects people of all ages. Biting your nails usual-ly stems from stress or forms as a nervous habit. Most research says that children and teenagers make up the greatest number of regular nail biters.

On the surface nail biting may seem like a trivial thing in terms of affecting your health. Although it can seem like biting your nails does nothing more than make the hands look less attractive, there are actually other dangers to repeated nail biting that people prone to the habit should consider.

Firstly, biting your nails can be an unsani-tary behavior. The fin-gers can pick up all mea-sures of contaminants, and the nails can be an ideal location for bacte-ria to thrive since nails are more difficult to keep clean than the surface of the hands.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, bacte-ria like E. coli can live beneath the tips of your nails. When you bite your nails, those bacteria end up in your gastrointesti-nal system and can lead to infection. The nails also can harbor fecal matter and many other unsavory microscopic particles, even parasites. Biting your nails gives these tiny invaders easy

access to your body.Nail biting also may

lead to infections on the fingers around the nail bed. The infection, called paronychia, causes red-ness, swelling and pain around the nail.

Microorganisms can get into the skin through tiny tears and abrasions that occur while biting the nails and cuticles, says The Mayo Clinic. If the infection damages the nail bed, you can end up affecting nail growth.

Should you have warts on your hands or fingers, they easily can be trans-fered to your lips and mouth through nail bit-ing.

Nail biting also can cause problems to your teeth. Prolonged nail bit-ing may affect how the teeth form in children. It can interfere with dental occlusion, or the manner in which the upper and lower teeth come togeth-er to bite. Eventually teeth can shift out of position. The Academy of General Dentistry esti-mates that nail biting can result in thousands of dollars of extra dental work.

While biting your nails may seem like a harmless habit, it actu-ally can affect personal health in a number of ways. Explore the differ-ent ways to keep from bit-ing your nails to improve the health of your fingers, your teeth and the rest of your body.
