Chamber and SEDC Start Construction

The Spearfish Chamber of Commerce and Spearfish

Economic Development Corporation are currently under

construction. SEDC is expanding their footprint by building

new office space. The building will be renovated on the

east interior side for the offices and several other small

projects throughout will be completed. The Chamber and

SEDC will have two conference rooms for members to

utilize.

Construction started on October 24th. Donovan

Construction is contracted on the project, which has been

in the works for several years.

Due to the construction, Coffee and Conversations have

been postponed, and the construction may affect the

conference room availability through the end of the year.

Our last Coffee & Conversation of the year will be hosted at

the Boot Barn (see cover).

We are excited for this project to finally be underway! The

BH Pioneer will publish an article in greater detail of the

project. Watch for a grand opening when the renovation is

complete.

As with physical security for your business, knowing your cash is equally important. Holograph: Hold a bill up to a light and look for a watermark of the face image on the bill. This image should be of the same President as the main portrait. The watermark can be seen from both sides of the bill since it is not printed on the bill but is imbedded in the paper. Security Thread: Looking at the bill through a light will also re-veal a thin vertical strip containing text that spells out the bill’s denomination. Color-shifting ink: If you hold the new series bill (except the $5 note) and tilt it back and forth, please observe the numeral in the lower right hand corner as its color shifts from green to black and back. Fine Line Printing Patterns: Very fine lines have been added to the portrait and on the reverse side scene to make it harder to reproduce. Comparison: Compare the feel and texture of the paper with other bills you know are authentic. If you believe you have received a counterfeit bill:

Do not put yourself in danger.

Do not return the bill to the passer.

Observe the passer’s description and write down their vehicle license plate numbers if you can.

Contact your local police department.

Place the counterfeit inside a baggie or envelope to protect it until you turn it over to the officials.

Remember, if you are passed a counterfeit bill, you own it. So when accepting cash, it pays to be knowledgeable about the crime of counterfeiting.

We absolutely love where we live! It begins with the great people that make up our community. But as we all know, there are always the few bad

apples. With the busy shopping season kicking off, I wanted to give a refresher on protecting your business. Now is the time to remind your front line staff as well.

No matter if you have a home office or storefront, physical products

or a tech company, theft and vandalism put your company at financial

risk. Replacing broken or stolen materials is costly, including the

downtime as your business is unable to function normally. These

types of issues distract from what really matters - running your

business. Take the first step in protecting your business and improving

your business’ physical security.

A few handy, simple steps include:

Leaving a light on after hours for internal visibility: This helps the police and neighboring businesses see any odd happenings after hours.

Adding surveillance such as internal and external cameras: Strategically placed outside cameras deter and catch criminals; also set one internally to monitor the front entrance

Installing better locks: Replace any that do not work properly as these are easier for criminals to break; rekey your locks when you have employee turn over.

Policy on key holders: Are they allowed to enter the premises after business hours? Create a policy that emphasizes the importance of keeping the door locked and all the lights on after dark for their safety.

Making sure key holders information is updated at the police department: This ensures officers are able to reach the proper contact if anything suspicious happens after hours.

Parking lot and building exterior should be well-lit at night: This is for many safety reasons, including walking safely in inclement weather.

If you ever notice anything unusual, call the police department. This includes if you are passing by another business after hours and some-thing seems awry. Be a good neighbor and notify the officials. Every-one will be grateful and the officers are most willing to investigate.

UPDATE

The 2017-2018 Leadership Spearfish Class finished their second session in

October.

The class visited Spearfish Forest Product’s sawmill, the Northern Hills Ranger

Station, and the Spearfish Hydroplant.

The class also met with Dr. Rachel MK Headly. She gave the class an overview

of project management. The session helped start the class’ annual project. In

the past, Leadership Spearfish has completed projects such as lighting in the

tunnel to Lookout Mountain. The current class will announce their project in the

coming month.
