Suzie Vinnick | July 29 @ 8:00 pm

Suzie Vinnick, 10X Maple Blues Award winner, 3X Juno Nominee was a Finalist in the 2013 International Blues Challenge Solo/Duo Category in Memphis, TN. She was the winner of the 2012 CBC Saturday Night Blues Great Canadian Blues Award and the 2012 SIRIUS/XM Blues Artist of the Year has released a new album entitled Live At Bluesville, a collection of roots, blues and gospel tunes featuring Suzie and her parlour guitar, Mabel. www.suzievinnick.com

David Gogo | August 5 @ 8:00 pm

As one of Canada’s hardest working and most prolific blues guitar virtuosos, David Gogo has amassed a worldwide fanbase and an impressive list of accomplishments.

He has earned four JUNO nominations, the 2012 Western Canadian Music Award for Blues Recording of the Year, the CBC Saturday Night Blues’ Great Canadian Blues Award for a lifetime contribution to the blues in Canada, and has twice been named Maple Blues Guitarist of the Year.

David has played on stage with Johnny Winter, Otis Rush, Albert Collins and Bo Diddley and has opened for George Thorogood, ZZ Top, The Tragicially Hip, Buddy Guy, Little Feat and Jimmy Vaughan.

David Vest | August 12 @ 8:00 pm

David Vest is a fabulous, foot-stompin’ roots-rocker and boogie-woogie piano player, who can just as effortlessly play beautiful jazz and country blues ballads. His live shows are legendary, and his career probably pre-dates rock and roll itself. Onstage with Big Joe Turner and opening for Roy Orbison before he was old enough to vote, he later played with blues giants like Bo Diddley, Jimmy T99 Nelson, and Hubert Sumlin. His new release, Roadhouse Revelation, is already being called “a most amazing set of songs” and “a candidate for album of the year.”

Anderson/Sloski | August 19 @ 8:00 pm

Lance Anderson is a Juno award winning producer (Leahy) and ‘Maple Blues Keyboardist of the Year’ (2013). He currently tours and records with Shakura S’Aida, having just completed a tour of Europe with her

in July 2015. Michael Sloski is is one of the most recorded drummers in Canada; he is a drummer’s drummer, having recorded and played with everyone from Bruce Cockburn to Holly Cole to Manteca to The Cameo Blues Band and many more. Together, Lance and Michael have been playing as the country’s premiere Hammond organ and drum duo for over a decade now. Wherever either of them wants to go…they can. Two of the country’s most respected players.

Carlos del Junco & Jimmy Bowskill | August 26 @ 8:00 pm

Harmonica great Carlos del Junco has toured Canada regularly since 1996 and tours often in Germany and the United States. He has played all the major jazz, blues, and folk festivals across Canada. Jimmy Bowskill has been impressing his musical elders since age 11, when he attracted the attention of the late great bluesman, Jeff Healey, by busking outside his Toronto club. Since then, Jimmy has toured internationally, including shows in Germany, Ukraine, France, Mexico and at the World Expo in Japan in 2005. He has also received a Juno Award nomination for Best Blues Album.

Please Note: Admission is $10 but TBS members pay only $8 (let the reception desk know you are a member when you arrive).

Notes &QuotesTerra Lightfoot

For this edition of Notes and Quotes, the artist of mention is Hamilton’s own singer, songwriter and guitar player, Terra Lightfoot. The “triple threat” multi-instrumentalist has much to offer, and people have already been taking notice of her abilities in all departments she propositions her musical prowess in. Growing up in Waterdown, Ontario, Terra’s music has brought her far beyond home – she’s performed in France, and the UK, as well as playing with world class artists such as Emmylou Harris, Sloan, James Burton, Ron Sexmith, and Gordon Lightfoot, just to name a few. And, no, there is no family connection between Terra and Gordon, although I’m certain she gets asked about it regularly.

Upon releasing her debut album - in conjunction with the record label Sonic Unyon, the self-titled Terra Lightfoot (Sept. 2011), Terra was decorated with three Hamilton Music Industry Awards in 2012. (Female Artist of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year and Best Alt-Country recording). All three awards were earned by Terra on the foundation of that first release, and there has been no indication that she is resting on the laurels of that triumph. Adhering to her admiration of her hometown roots, Terra set out to record a second album alongside the Hamilton based record label, Sonic Unyon.

Lightfoot released her sophomore album Every Time My Mind Runs Wild last April (2015), and it started showing signs of success immediately. Her lead single “Never Will” caught the attention of CBC Radio within two weeks of its release, and other songs from the freshly recorded issue can be found on numerous other radio stations.

There are some differences when comparing Terra Lightfoot and Every Time My Mind Runs Wild. This album offers a genre-crossing sound that is oriented toward pop, rock, and roots. When asked to speak on what is different on Every Time My Mind Runs Wild, the songstress says, “This album is definitely more of a rocker. I wrote these songs not knowing how they would shake out with the guys in the band, but they quickly became unapologetically loud and I started to incorporate solos and really work hard to bring out the best sounds with our three piece at the time. Now we've added a keyboard player to the mix since we added keys to the record.”

Some of the differences could also be credited, in part, to the fact that Terra turned to Montreal producers Gus Van Go and Werner F (known for working with acts such as the Trews) for studio direction. With that being said, Lightfoot herself also gives credit to this album for making her a more disciplined songwriter. When speaking about the partnership, Lightfoot has said "Gus never questioned what I could do. He pushed me past the boundaries of what I thought I could do. I don't think he even has boundaries. Working with those guys lit a fire under me to play better, to show them that I could do it."

Also in contrast to her debut, Lightfoot performs all of the guitar tracks herself on this newest release too (for those wondering, Terra played a red 1972 Gibson SG on this album). When speaking about the guitar work she brings to the table this time around, she has said; "I know it sounds childish, but it was important for me to play all the guitars. I look up to people like Bonnie Raitt and Mother Maybelle of the Carter family. They played those guitars and I wanted to, too. It speaks a lot about a woman trying to make her own record.”

Speaking about that being in the recording studio, Terra says; “It was a completely immersive process, which I hadn't done on the first record. On the first record we went in for five days to do beds and dubs, then came back sporadically over the next year to complete it. With this one we were in the studio for three full weeks. It was nice to bounce ideas so quickly between Gus, Werner, the band and myself. We really came up with some interesting things, and we certainly didn't agree on everything. I actually enjoy the conflicts that we had now because it pushed us to come up with better ideas. Tracking vocals on this record was one of the tougher parts. We laid down a live vocal on everything - on a few songs we kept the live vocal, on others I would get in the room and try to beat my best take. It was a very interesting approach. It was also emotionally empowering and draining - much like being on the road.”

For the people that have cathected to the sound that Lightfoot put forward on her premiere release, there is still a clearly defined thread in both albums that makes them undeniably hers: powerful vocals and poetically intriguing lyrics.

The momentum that Terra Lightfoot has put into motion has propelled her forward, not only with a new album, but also with a tour to support her hard work and determinations. She is scheduled to perform in five Canadian provinces in the months of July and August alone, and the tour will continue into the fall. Terra unapologetically displays her excitement about the tour, saying: “So far, I'm loving it! I'm pretty grateful that my job allows for travel to new places - and that I get to play on all kinds of stages to all kinds of people. The landscapes here are also so incredible. Last night we went to the pre-festival fish fry on Long Lake in Yellowknife...listening to great music on a lake in the sunshine with the festival staff and the musicians, eating good local food - I really can't think of a nicer thing to do with a Friday evening.”

Of note, Terra will be one of the featured artists at the upcoming Women’s Blues Review this fall. Presented by the Toronto Blues

Society and Massey Hall, the 29th Women’s Blues Review will be held at Massey Hall in Toronto on November 28th 2015.

I couldn’t help but ask her if this is show is one of the ones on the tour that she is excited about, and here’s what she had to say about that question: “NO. Just kidding! "My friend Lori Yates played last year and she couldn't say enough good things about it. I'm excited to play in a professional band of women, and to play the songs with a new group of people. I'm also really excited to see the other performers. I think it will be a very powerful experience for all of us involved.”

Terra completes her message with Notes and Quotes by saying “If I could say one thing, it's that I'm a lifer. I couldn't ever see myself not playing music in any context. So I consider all of this to be one big amazing learning experience.

Terra Lightfoot Every Time My Mind Runs Wild Sonic Unyon/Sony

With Cr ystal Shawanda already announced for the Women’s Blues Review, Terra Lightfoot’s second solo disc will give you a taste of the next featured artist to be announced. Just as Shawanda came over from country, Terra’s first one was an acoustic folk disc, although she’s also a member of the alt-country group The Dinner Belles. Rocking Blues seems to suit both of them. Exhibit #1 is the opening track: “All Alone” which begins with a searing guitar intro from Terra herself. That gives way to her ear-opening blues voice. It may not always sing blues but with Lead Belly and Lightnin’ Hopkins listed among her influences, it certainly starts from the right place.

“All Alone” implores her newfound lover to stay for one more day as he leaves. Power chords underlie “No Hurry” as she urges a new lover to take his time. “Never Will” is a radio-friendly rocker that debuts as the new single and video (it’s at her web site and on YouTube) “See You In The Morning” tells a happier tale, over rolling drums and a quite wonderful bass line (played by Matthew Fleming). On drums is Joel Haynes and Liam O’Neill is added on very effective keyboards to round a very good band. Other songs here revert to her acoustic, folky style to end the disc on a quieter note. The rockers I like are front-end loaded. Ms. Lightfoot is from Hamilton and is touring out west as you read this. Before heading out, though, she will have performed six of these songs with a rather larger band, the Hamilton Philharmonic on July 24. Get in early, this star is going to rise fast. The web site is www.terralightfoot.com

Stephen Barry Band Treat Her Right Bros/Select

The Stephen Barry Band of Montreal vies with Downchild for the title of longest-serving blues band, they’re celebrating their 40th this year with a new album and a tour. In fact, as the Back Door Band, they go back to 1968. An original member, guitarist Jörn Reissner, was coaxed out of retirement for the event and his “Sister Francis” is one of the highlights on a disc that doesn’t have as much blues as you might expect. The lineup here also includes current & longtime members Andrew Cowan on guitar & vocals, Gordon Adamson on drums & vocals, Martin Boodman on harp & vocals and Jody Golick on sax with Stephen Barry on bass & vocals. They start the celebration with a fine rocking treatment of the Roy Head song. “Gimme a Stone” is a pop tune with a gorgeous folk-like melody. The break features an attractive harp/sax unison solo. “Higher Ground” is the Stevie Wonder song that uses the “Help Me” tune to great effect as the narrator is going to keep on trying to get there. Willie Dixon’s “Long As I Have You” and “Little Red Rooster” get languid but effective arrangements. “Big Boys Cry” is another little-covered R&B tune, sung very well by bassist Barry. “Sister Francis” has that harp/sax thing happening again on another attractive tune, asking for her help in these trying times. There are only Quebec dates so far for the Anniversary Tour but at least the CD is available here and it is at iTunes.

Dan Doiron Stand Back, I Don’t Know How Loud This Thing Gets… Self

Cape Breton’s Dan Doiron is justifiably proud of his new, third disc. A stunning production, with an attractive cover and

and it’s under construction as I write this but the music is available at all the usual places.

Dalannah and Owen Been Around A While Self

Dalannah Gail Bowen and Owen Owen Owen (Owen Veber) have both been around a while: Bowen a long time vocalist/actress & social activist and Veber a veteran and inventive bassist, both hail from Vancouver. Owen is 40-year man in the Vancouver scene but this is the first time I’ve seen his name on a blues disc. He proves here that it shouldn’t be his last. And yes it is just bass and voice. It’s a testament to both their talents that this works so well as there is no place to hide. The title tune opens with just the bass and it wanders across the stereo spectrum as Dalannah reflects on her well-lived life. Owen also multi-tracks, here and elsewhere, soloing over top - a lead bass, if you will. Five of the songs are originals from Bowen & Veber, presumably with lyrics from Bowen set to music by Veber, beginning with this well-chosen opener. “Early in the Morning” is the standard sung marvellously, it’s a fixture of her live set.

Billy Eckstine’s “Blues Mother of Sin” gets an especially fine performance. “Queen Bee” is her tribute to Big Mama Thornton, says the note and is a clever re-construction of traditional blues lyrics, well delivered. “Inner City Blues” is the Marvin Gaye tune, selected to highlight Bowen’s social activism. “Heaven’s Right Here” is another excellent original about realizing what she has. Robert Johnson’s “ Come On In My Kitchen” gets a most unusual and intriguing arrangement, a highlight indeed. “Walking Blues” is credited to Son House but sounds more like Butterfield’s but no matter, this is also a marvellous performance.

With their virtuoso talent, judicious pacing and song selection, I think you’ll agree they’ve overcome any limitations they’ve imposed on themselves. This duo’s site is

a video all in the service of some very good songs. Doiron is a fine singer and an excellent guitarist, making this one well worth your attention. Now based in Halifax, he has assembled many of its finest players for a program of horn band blues & R&B.

The rocking “You Give Me Shivers” is a fine opener: behind his vocal we get his guitar, Kim Dunn’s organ, Keith Doiron’s bass & Mike Carroll’s drums along with fine horn section and back up singers, all beautifully recorded. “My Kind of Trouble” is another fine rocker with some excellent drumming, the story of a very lucky man. The horns sit this one out. Things slow down only a little for “Killing Each Other To Get To Heaven”, Doiron’s well-written commentary on world affairs. What if we are never taught how to hate? This is the video, at www.dandoiron.com and at youTube. The title song is another highlight, as he sings of the power of his guitar as a weapon of change. “Don’t You Know Who I Think I Am?” shows he also has a fine sense of humour. “Painted Up” features fellow Cape Breton guitarist John Campbelljohn on slide on a light-hearted, funky tale of his trip to Memphis for the Blues Challenge. (There’s getting to be quite a list of these!). “Tango Girl” is the only slow blues but it’s a fine one about the stripper he loves. The trip south also provided the inspiration for “One And For All” with it’s references to crossroads and the devil. The web site doesn’t have any shows outside of Nova Scotia at the moment, but the CD is available for streaming and purchase at his web site and at iTunes.

Buddy Guy Born to Play Guitar Silvertone/RCA/Sony

The King is dead. Long live the King. Buddy Guy is now the last headlining blues star and with this new album he looks backwards and forwards. His trademark sound is a high energy, supercharged blues but this one, with a couple of guitars, piano

(Kevin McKendree, in fine form), bass & drums (Hambridge) would be a traditional Chicago blues disc were it not for the fine new wrinkles that producer Tom Hambridge has added. There are also a couple of songs that take Buddy in new directions. The title track opens and it is another fine example of Hambridge’s talent for turning biography into song. It’s just Buddy and his guitar to open and although other instruments join in, it stays relatively quiet and remarkably effective. As with the last album, there are guest stars here and ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons duets very well on vocal & guitar on “Wear You Out”. Kim Wilson guests on a couple, including a fine version of Little Walter’s “Too Late”. Joss Stone is also a treat on “Baby, You Got What It Takes”.

The tribute to BB King is an excellent gospel-tinged song, “Flesh and Bone”, sung with Van Morrison and it’s a major highlight. Buddy Guy was at BB’s funeral - as we know Buddy takes his blues history seriously. Other, non-guest star, highlights include tough Chicago blues originals, “(I may not look it but I’m) Smarter Than I Was” and “Crazy World” which use the modern recording studio to full advantage but in the service of excellent songs. These are the ones that bode well for the future. “Thick Like Mississippi Mud” is the best example here of his trademark supercharged sound and it’s also a video, available at www.buddyguy.net among other places. The album concludes with a heartfelt acoustic tribute, “Come Back Muddy”. The official CD Release Party was at Buddy Guy’s Legends on July 30, his 79th birthday. A couple of discs ago BB sang in their duet that he hoped Buddy would stick around a little longer, on the strength of this stellar effort, he most certainly will.
