VICKY SUNOHARAHead Coach (3rd Season)

Coaching Staff

A member of Canada’s national women’s hockey program from 1989-2008, Sunohara came to U of T in 2011-12 after serving two years as the director of women’s hockey at The Hill Academy in Vaughan, Ont. She was previously an assistant coach with the Blues in 2004-05, as well as an assistant coach with Hockey Canada’s under-18 and -19 women’s programs.

The two-time Olympic gold medalist served as an assistant captain for seven years with Team Canada before retiring from international competition in 2008. In addition to the 1998, 2002 and 2006 Winter Olympics, Sunohara has represented Canada in several international ice hockey competitions. In total, she won 15 gold and three silver medals as a member of Canada’s national team, finishing her career with 118 points (56 goals and 62 assists) in 164 games.

Sunohara also served as team captain for 10 seasons with the Brampton Canadette-Thunder in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL), leading her team to two provincial and one national title.

Sunohara is no stranger to the University of Toronto. After attending Northeastern University on a full athletic scholarship from 1988-90, she played two seasons with the Blues, winning two Ontario Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Association (OWIAA) championship titles and earning rookie of the year honours in 1990-91. Following the conclusion of her hockey career, Sunohara returned to U of T and completed her bachelor’s degree in physical health education.

SEASON PREVIEW

V A R S I T Y B L U E S

The University of Toronto Varsity Blues women’s hockey team finished last season with a 15-8-3 record in fifth place and fell to the Western Mustangs in an OUA quarter-final series. Toronto redeemed themselves as the host of the CIS national championship, taking all three games to overtime en route to a fourth-place fin-ish.

After a taste of the national stage, the Blues are hungry to extend post-season play and earn their spot in the CIS tournament this year.

“I think last season was a great stepping stone for our program,” said Vicky Su-nohara, who enters her third season as Varsity Blues bench boss this season. “We earned some respect from other teams across the CIS and proved that we could compete with the best in the country. We gained some much needed confidence which leaves us in a great position to start the season.”

Back to lead the Blues between the pipes is fourth-year netminder Nicole Kesteris. The Aurora, Ont., native posted a 0.916 regular season save percentage and ended the season with a career-high 53-save performance in a 1-0 overtime loss to the eventual CIS champion Montreal Carabins. Rookie goalie Michaela Logan of North Vancouver, B.C., joins the team from Okanagan Hockey Academy and will challenge Kesteris for playing time this season.

Team captain Kelly O’Hanlon of Markham, Ont., returns to once again lead Toronto’s offensive charge. The fifth-year forward topped the team and ranked seventh in the OUA with 12 goals and 15 assists in 2012-13. Ilderton, Ont., native Taylor Day had an impressive rookie campaign, finishing second on the team with eight goals and 11 assists last season.

Third-year forwards Sonja Weidenfelder and Jacqueline Scheffel proved they were scoring threats in the post-season last year and veterans Ragan Danford, Amanda Ricker and Brittany Kirby will not only be relied on for the leadership, but for their finish around the net as well.

Twin sisters Alie and Courtney Brind’Amour-McClure, first-year forward Katherine Gale of Crowthorne, England, and Elmira College transfer Arden Cowley adds some solid depth to Toronto offence. The twins have a natural vision of the game and scoring ability that is sure to have success this season, while Gale, a member of the Great Britain national team, adds solid leadership and versatility to squad this season.

Toronto’s defensive corps returns in 2013-14. Fifth-year veteran Marlie McLaugh-lin will be called upon to help guide newcomers Autumn Garnham and Rebecca Bourgeois through their first season on U of T’s blue line.

Fellow veterans Stacey Oue and MC Geneau are also back to help quarterback the Blues break out and start the offensive rush, while third-year players April Looije and Caitlin Maikawa provide a solid physical presence in Toronto’s defensive zone.

RECORD MANUAL

The University of Toronto women’s hockey program is rich in history and tradition. The Varsity Blues first iced a team in 1921 when a student-athlete named Marion Hilliard put together a team to play against McGill Univer-sity. The women’s team won the first ever intercollegiate championship and would go on to win 11 more before the league was disbanded in 1933 due to the Depression. Hilliard’s activism left a lasting effect on women’s hockey in general and specifically at the Uni-versity of Toronto, where the program has thrived.

In the late 1960s league play was re-established among Ontario universi-ties and the Varsity Blues have been a dominant force in the province and the country ever since. Starting in 1971-72 the Varsity Blues have captured 17 conference championships, more than any other team in the Ontario, and U of T was the team of the 1990s, winning six OUA championships and placing first in the OUA every season.

In 1997, women’s hockey became a CIS sport and the Varsity Blues are one of only seven teams to cap-ture the coveted national title. They finished an unbeaten 35-0 season in 2000-01 winning the national title with a 4-3 victory over the Regina Cougars.

Since the first International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) sanctioned Women’s World Championship was held in Ottawa in 1990, U of T has enjoyed a strong relationship with Canada’s national team ever since. Eight Varsity Blues players have gone on to play for the national team: Lori Dupuis, Heather Ginzel, Jayna Hefford, Andrea Hunter, Leslie Reddon, Na-thalie Rivard, Laura Schuler, and Vicky Sunohara. Dupuis, Hefford, Reddon, Schuler, and Sunohara also joined the Canadian Olympic team. In addition to the senior national team, the Varsity Blues have had five players on the Under 22 National Team. Susie Laska, Kim Malcher, Safiya Muharuma, Lisa Robertson, and Jill Savin have all worn

the red and white for Canada while also wearing the blue and white of the Varsity Blues.

U of T’s coaching staff has also been well represented nationally as both former head coaches Karen Hughes and Dave McMaster have been with Canada’s national team. Hughes, the Varsity Blues head coach from 1993-94-2010-11, was an assistant coach with Canada’s gold medal winning national women’s team at the World Championships from 1998-2001. She represented Canada as an assistant coach in 2002 at the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. In addition, Hughes was head coach of the U-22 National Team in 2000, 2001 and 2002, and was head coach of the Senior National Team when they captured gold at the 2004 World Championships.
