Marist founders used the phrase Marys workto describe the gentle, womanly, motherly face of the Church. We have much to learn from Marys faith, humility, devotion and love. At LSMs assembly this week Grace Tu'inukuafe said As young Marist women we are called to live in Marys way by thinking, judging, feeling and acting as Mary would in the world today. In doing so we are becoming strong, confident and resilient young women. If you would like to find out more about our Marist story come along to a one hour seminar run by the Board of Trustees on June 19th after Champagnat House Mass. Stephanies research focuses on identifying factors that contribute to the trajectories of emotional and behavioural development during early childhood. Using Growing Up in New Zealand data, she will investigate how sociodemographic measures, parental mental health, gestational factors and concurrent developmental abilities relate to psychosocial measures at ages 2 and 4.5 years. Her research will help identify the greatest risk factors for poor emotional and behavioural development, as well as factors that increase resilience in cases of early environmental adversity. She will also monitor the trajectories of those with the strongest prosocial behaviour. Stephanie has a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and Statistics from the University of Auckland. She achieved First Class Honours in Psychology, Psychology, where she investigated the environmental and genetic determinants of childhood depression. Stephanies PhD project is funded by the University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship. MUNA 2015 Last Friday and Saturday two teams represented Marist College at the Auckland MUNA, Model United Nations Assembly, organised and run by the amazing Downtown Rotary Club. Secondary Schools from around Auckland and the North Island came together, each school representing a different country, arguing and debating important global issues faced today: topics like cyber warfare, ISIS, and global warming. The Marist Year 12 team represented Iran and the Year 13 team represented New Zealand. Dressing in each countrys national dress, burkas for the team from Iran and appropriate costumes for a rugby player, a farmer and Helen Clark were worn to represent New Zealand. Lobbying began, deals between countries were made, and notes were sent along with small gifts to persuade countries to vote a certain way. Gifts to New Zealand included a can of baked beans from our friends across the ditch. As New Zealand, we argued that our soldiers should remain in Iraq continuing to train soldiers of the Iraq army despite not having Security Council clearance and that Helen Clark should be the next Secretary General of the United Nations. It was an educational day, full of fun, meeting new friends and future leaders of New Zealand. The best part of the day was the General Assembly voting in favour of Helen Clark becoming Secretary General. It was an amazing event to attend; many lessons were learnt and we would definitely recommend attending MUNA if any student is given the opportunity. It offers a chance to learn and grow your knowledge of world issues and different countries. Both teams would like to say a special thanks for Mrs Taylor and Mr Bowen for attending both days with us and offering us invaluable advice and amazing support. ROCKERZ DANCE COMPETITION 2015 Our Marist girls have been practising for Rockerz and we wish them all the best. We need our Marist family support, so requesting all parents to PLEASE support this group by voting for Marist. The last day to vote is tomorrow night. FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Guardians,

May is traditionally known as Mary’s month in the Catholic Church. Marist founders used the phrase “Mary’s work” to describe the gentle, womanly, motherly face of the Church. We have much to learn from Mary’s faith, humility, devotion and love. At LSM’s assembly this week Grace Tu'inukuafe said “As young Marist women we are called to live in Mary’s way by thinking, judging, feeling and acting as Mary would in the world today. In doing so we are becoming strong, confident and resilient young women.”

If you would like to find out more about our Marist story come along to a one hour seminar run by the Board of Trustees on June 19th after Champagnat House Mass.

FINDING HUMOUR

14. Finding Humour: Willing to laugh appropriately; Look for the whimsical, absurd, ironic and unexpected in life; Laugh at myself when I can.

9M ENGLISH

Year 9M English learns about Sustainability from Adrienne Palwankar (past student), Auckland City Council. The girls will choose a topic to research and produce a formal report for their next English assessment.

GIFTED AND TALENTED CONFERENCE

Last Wednesday twelve of our Year 10 and 11 students attended the Gifted and Talented Conference. The girls were challenged to think critically about data collection, the place of science in civilisation and a deceptively simple Oxbridge question which asked the girls to consider ‘how to tell a farmer his cow is dead?’ It was an enlightening, enjoyable and thought-provoking day.

COACHES CLUB

All student coaches are invited to attend coaches club every Wednesday at lunch times. We can share our experiences, what works well and what doesn’t and receive support and mentoring from experienced coaches. Free hot chocolates for all student coaches.

WINTER SPORT UPDATE

Winter sport is now well under way. Many teams have been braving the cold, wet and windy weather to represent Marist College in their chosen codes. We have almost 40 teams competing over winter which is fantastic!

Rachel D’Souza, our sports captain has come up with the new ‘Spirit Squad’ initiative. The spirit squad attended their first match a few weeks back and provided the junior girls football team with great support. A reminder to all students playing winter sport, please bring warm gear to training and games. The Marist College tracksuit and polar fleece are available from Elizabeth Michael and are recommended for all students playing winter sport. Keep up the good work and remember to thank your coaches, managers and supporters!
