2009 was an exciting year for the Australian and global coffee industries and an exceptional year for the BeanScene readership community. In 2009, with your help, BeanScene Magazine grew from a historical rhythm of four issues per year, to six issues per year and from an 84-page book in February 2009 to a 104-page book in December 2009. The net result is more great coffee experiences, insights and expertise being shared with coffee lovers.2010 has already started with a renewed energy and enthusiasm – this edition promises to be our best yet, with colourful and interesting stories from across Australia and around the globe filling each page. We are anticipating an exciting year filled with opportunities, growth, new experiences and lots of great coffee. BeanScene Magazine continues to position itself as a world-class coffee magazine. Will Priestley grew up in Tassie and started in specialty

coffee four years ago. He spent three years working at

Island Espresso, learning under Dan’e kinezavic. Just

over a year ago, Will moved to Melbourne and after a

few months found his way to cafenatics. Last year he

also competed at his first competition, the 2009 Latte

Art Championships where he placed 3rd. Recently,

Will also won the Victorian latte art comps and recently

became the 2010 National Latte Art Champion.

A word from the publisher

Emily Oak has over 10 years’ experience in coffee

retailing, sales and education. She began her coffee

career as a barista while at university and in 2001,

Emily competed at the World Barista Championship

(WBC) in Miami. Just one year later she began her

international judging career. Since 2004, she has

been the Asia Pacific Regional Coordinator for the

WBC and in 2008 Emily was invited to join the WBC

Board of Directors on behalf of the Specialty Coffee

Association of America, the first time this position has

been held outside of the USA.

Jack Hanna first began his barista journey when he

was 18. Quickly developing an obsessive pursuit of

perfection in the cup. The first barista championship he

entered he won, under several international judges.

The constant wanting to learn led him to Canada, to be

trained under the guidance of the four time Canadian

Champion and twice Runner-up of the World Barista

Championship, Sammy Piccolo. He now runs his

own business called ‘Jack and the Bean’, which is

a wholesale coffee company as well as one of the

country’s premiere consultants.

Maria Paoli is one of the best known and most well

respected names in Melbourne’s and Australia’s vibrant

coffee scene. She began her career as a barista 17

years ago, travelling around the world in search of

espresso nirvana. Not only is she an accredited barista

judge and host of the iconic Melbourne Historical

Coffee Trek, she is also a teacher, trainer and industry

consultant. Her commentary and observations within

the industry are gospel.

Kyle Freund is the communications manager for

Coffee Kids in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a non-profit

organisation dedicated to helping coffee-farming

families improve their quality of life. After spending two

years as a marketing consultant working with coffee

cooperatives, artisan projects and a slaughterhouse in

Guatemala, Freund moved to Santa Fe in 2007 to join

the staff at Coffee Kids. He has worked in the coffee

regions of Guatemala and Mexico and has seen the

challenges coffee-farming families confront on a daily

basis.

Dear BeanScene,

Long-time fan, first time writer. My lovely wife picked up a copy of BeanScene

at Genovese, one of our favourite coffee suppliers. I was ecstatic to finally find

a coffee-lovers mag!

I enjoy the mag’s breadth and variety of article, especially the profiles on new

home and commercial machines…oh I do lust after the new Giotto. The profiles

on the different bean varietals, and understanding the work that goes into it’s

cultivation is fascinating. The Detera Opus 1 Exotic is top of my wish list. With

the broad range of beans available, a few of our favourites are the Padre blend,

single origin Ethiopian, ol’ trusty – Dimattina Prima Tazza, and Genovese.

Our love of the finest Arabica has rubbed off onto our two boys. A beautiful

part of our weekend morning coffee ritual is for our middle kiddo to talk us

through each step. He enjoys polishing the coffee, after the tamp, placing

the cup under the group head and most importantly stirring and licking our

espresso spoons. I’m sure pure Arabica is good for a toddler’s development!

Andy Freeman coffeeSnob by name, not by nature

coffeeSnobs was born through the necessity of home coffee roasters to find a supply of great quality coffee at a fair price. Today, 6 years after the original concept was introduced, the tradition continues to expand across the Australian landscape.

Started by a small group of enthusiasts in a coffee news group, coffeeSnobs moved to a web based forum led by Geelong couple Rae and

Richard. It was officially “born” on the 10th March, 2004, with the aim of co-operatively buying a bag of coffee and splitting it up between its members who were roasting in popcorn machines and dog bowls.

In the beginning, the green beans were picked-up from Melbourne suppliers in a Falcon station wagon which pretty much limited the polls to a couple of bags every 4 to 6 weeks. They were bagged by Rae and Richard each month with some assistance from the odd local who could spare some time on a Saturday afternoon. Postal orders were taken to the local post office in a pram (with baby under one arm I assume) and luckily the courier picked up most of the shipment for distribution around the country.

TRouBle BRewInGFrom these humble beginnings,

coffeeSnobs grew to 200 members nine months after its inception and the monthly coffee sales amounted to 3-4 bags (180 kg-240 kg). These beans were mostly being delivered to central locations for a bagging afternoon with up to 10 coffeeSnob members chipping in their time to help the process run quickly and smoothly.

unfortunately, coffeeSnobs suffered from “co-op syndrome” when internal bickering stopped the flow of beans and nearly caused the demise of a great idea. Internal fighting, arguments, power plays and personality conflicts turned the

coffeeSnobs website into a war zone and hostilities made it a less than friendly place environment.

BAck on TRAckAfter seemingly endless weeks of no

coffee and no obvious resolution in sight Andy Freeman made Rae and Rich an offer for their website in the hope that he could steer it back on track and restore the bean flow to the membership. The deal was done around the first birthday party

for coffeeSnobs in March 2005 when the forum totalled 225 thirsty members looking for their next roast.

Andy Freeman grew-up around the Geelong area with a normal childhood spent playing with Meccano, train sets, riding bikes, building cubby houses and typical child pursuits. His first paying job was a paper round before school in 1978 where he spent nearly the entire amount earned each week on buying kiss swap cards from his employer. After leaving school, he had a wide range of jobs but spent most of his working life in the computer industry, specialising in server and network infrastructure. Any spare time outside work hours was filled with building, rebuilding and competing on his drag racing motorcycle and he continued that hobby until his first child, Sarah was born. The love for coffee grew from a young age and Andy was always the only one at work with his own coffee and plunger choosing not to drink the instant coffee provided. His work colleagues always knew he was snobby about his coffee!

one christmas many years ago, Andy’s wife Paula and his brother Jason both bought him some green coffee to try home roasting. neither Paula nor Jason knew the other had bought the same christmas present, the time was obviously right to take the next step. After a few years of roasting some great coffee at home, he found coffeeSnobs and life would never be the same again.

The initial monthly sales went well and a few ideas were floated to inject new life into the site. Some worked well and some just didn’t hit the mark. Two months later and another round of upheaval

found the site settled on some new software, new features and some promise for the future as coffeeSnobs attracted loyal site sponsors, happy new members and forged good long-term relationships with green bean wholesalers and brokers around the world.

ReAcHInG new HeIGHTS

12 months later in May 2006, coffeeSnobs hit the 1000 member mark and continued to sustain strong membership growth. It was at this time that it became obvious that the previous methods of monthly sales and manual invoicing were becoming a burden to manage and once again it became a case of “grow or die” for the coffeeSnobs community.

In August 2006, Matt Taylor from Geekrocket was commissioned to develop an electronic storefront for coffeeSnobs website to replace the outdated manual processes. Its requirements were complicated and challenging but in a short period of time, Matt had written the logic and code that would facilitate future growth while delivering better feedback to the

users and the site administration. This was called BeanBay.

BeanBay back-end software has allowed coffeeSnobs to process many more orders each month and give members far better and more efficient invoicing and order tracking.

As an Internet based business, coffeeSnobs relies on computer server performance and as it continued to grow in numbers, the existing computer hardware struggled to cope. After a couple of incremental hardware changes, December 2006 saw a full-blown, high performance server installed for coffeeSnobs to run from.

March 2007 marked the third birthday of coffeeSnobs and Andy proudly announced that for the previous six months he had been building a roastery to deliver “roasted on demand” beans to those that don’t have the time of inclination to roast the fine selections of green beans that travel through BeanBay each month.

By May 2007, Faircrack was started. Faircrack is a coffeeSnobs charity fund initially fuelled by a 50 cent per kilogram donation from bean sales (roasted and raw) as well as from generous membership and supporter donations each month. The goal of Faircrack is to deliver 100% of the monies raised directly to projects at coffee origin without a single cent lost in management and administration overheads. It’s a great opportunity for all the members to give something back to those that work so tirelessly to grow, pick, grade

and freight the beans from hostile environments all over this beautiful planet, and as time goes on, coffeeSnobs will tackle some really big and hopefully life changing projects at coffee origin.

September 2007 was a low point in the short coffeeSnobs history. The new roastery was broken into and everything that wasn’t bolted down was stolen; including grinders, espresso machines, coffee and small roasters. It was a struggle to keep production going but it was well worth the effort.

May 2008 saw the coffeeSnobs website membership grow to a new milestone, 5000 members.

The very first Faircrack project was announced in September 2008. The funds raised by the coffeeSnobs community purchased a coffee pulper for a small village on the Southern slopes of kilimanjaro, Tanzania. The village was Rononi and via emails and some great photos from a coffee farmer in Tanzania, the website watched it being setup, commissioned and run to produce a far better coffee than they had ever produced by hand.

By the start of 2009, Beanscene Magazine produced its first issue. From

day one, it wanted to contribute to the Faircrack project. The magazine offered to donate $5 for every annual subscription and continues to support Faircrack today. The remainder of 2009 saw more Faircrack pulpers deployed to three more villages in kilimanjaro and all have now used them to produce far better coffee than any previous season.

coffeeSnobs proudly hit 10,000 members in December 2009 – close to 100% growth in 18 months. The website continues to offer roasted and green coffee to its members and there are regular social get togethers and events all over the country.

In January 2010, coffeeSnobs announced

the construction of “Snobbery Too”, the new warehouse and roastery located in north Geelong, victoria. Initially setup to facilitate better, faster and more efficient green bean distribution, it will also house a training room, a climate controlled roasting room and a showroom full of coffee toys to play with including sample roasters, espresso machines, grinders and home roasting machines.

Today the coffeeSnobs website enjoys 710,000 page views a month from its current membership and site visitors and that exposure is growing all the time. Managing more than 180,000 posted messages to the internet forums on the site is no small task and the bulk of the site management and housework is handled by a fantastic team of site moderators (Scootagal, Javaphile, Mal and 2muchcoffeeman). These are the people that keep the wheels turning of coffeeSnobs.com.au, mediating discussions that get out of hand as well as helping develop policy behind the scenes to make the community a better place.

As well as his love for coffee, Andy is also a family man, loving the creative aspect of sourcing and creating amazing coffees in a world well removed from computers and he has somehow managed to intertwine these two. His whole family, wife Paula, Sarah (10), Zed (8) and Tiana (5) get involved with the joys of moving raw and roasted coffee around the country and the kids are already turning into coffee aficionados, regularly critiquing their friends parents and local cafes coffee making skills. I think they are already becoming coffeeSnobs.

last but not least in the history of coffeeSnobs is its membership. The members of coffeeSnobs are a caring and passionate group of people from different age groups and backgrounds, from different religions and political persuasions and from all walks of life who all share a common interest… great coffee. It’s a real credit to the whole membership that promotes a friendly community with a comfortable, homely feel that encourages healthy debate and nurtures its newest members (newbies) to become future teachers of the next generation. For the most part, coffeeSnobs are only too keen to help someone else along their coffee journey. They may be snobs by name, but not by nature!

February 2005 Internal friction threatened to collapse the co-op.

March 2005 Andy Freeman bought the website.

May 2005 lots of changes to see what worked and what didn’t.

May 2006 coffeeSnobs membership hits 1000.

August 2006 The new website shopping cart “BeanBay” is released.

December 2006 A new computer server is purchased to run coffeeSnobs.

February 2007 coffeeSnobs membership hits 2000.

March 2007 The coffeeSnobs roastery is built called The Snobbery.

May 2007 Faircrack is born with a 50c/kg surcharge added to all beans.
