    SP77.40 WG1 Members

Hello! Thanks for your reply to Februarys questionnaire and introduction. I have summarizedyour feedback in the February minutes and have posted the minutes on the SP77.40 WG1committee achieves. I will work to keep everyone informed despite different revisions ofsoftware we currently use. I know Loanna only recently got our committee archive link workingso I hope you had a chance to view the SP77.40 WG1 bulletin board.

The purpose of our second correspondence is to provide members with backgroundinformation, reference material, and consider the technical report outline. I have prepared twoaction items under reference material and report outline.

    BACKGROUND INFORMATION

In the early 1990s, Scientific Apparatus Makers Association (SAMA) as a society folded. Itspopular standard Functional Diagramming of Instrument and Control Systems (PMC 22.1-1981) is now being distributed by ISA as a service to the industry for historical purposes andgeneral information. Per SP77 (Fossil Power Plant) committees request, ISAs S5.1 committeeagreed to include relative content of PMC 22.1 into the next release of S5.1 (InstrumentationSymbols and Identification). Since then, the S77 committee has participated on S5.1 to insurethe relative content is incorporated into S5.1, However, S5.1 committee has been inactive. Thelast S5.1 draft (#4) was issued 10/2000. In recent correspondence with the S5.1 chair, draft #5should be distributed the second quarter of 03.

Due to SP77 committees efforts to integrate PMC 22.1 into S5.1, some of the majoragreements to date include:

    1) ISA S5.1 has included application software as a term to identify user applications that isconfigurable. This term is consistent with the definition use in ISA S84. Functional diagrammingis a means of documentation application software.

    2) ISAs S5.0 series has a standard for regulatory (S5.1) and binary (S5.2) symbols whereas;SAMA (PMC 22.1) standard has regulatory and binary symbols in one document. ISA S5.1agreed to include binary symbols and will withdrawn S5.2 standard when the new S5.1 isrelease.

    3) The S5.1 scope will include the symbols and identification for all devices and functions.Technical reports will be prepared to expand on the work of S5.1 and include examples on howto use the symbols and identification of S5.1

    4) SP77 committee has comments extensively to S5.1 draft #4 with one rebuttalcorrespondence with the chair. SP77 committee waits for draft #5 to see what comments thechair included.

    2/3

To start drafting a technical report, the SP77 committee submitted a scope and purpose to theS5.1 Committee chair for a new Technical Report on Functional Diagrams Usage.Unfortunately, the scope and purpose was not acceptable to the S5.1 chair and correspondencehas yet been able to reach a compromise. Since, the S5.1 committee has not hold a meeting inseveral years, there has not been a dialog within the S5.1 committee on approving this scopeand purpose. Thus, the SP77 committee felt that a new S77 working group should be form to

prepare a technical report on functional diagrams.

For those of you who get ISA magazine INTECH, there is an article in February issue on ourcommittee.

    REFERENCE MATERIAL

I have forward the following references to Loanna for submittal to our committee archive. Draft 4of ISA S5.1 is presently in the archive however; the other two documents should be available laterthis week (3/14/03).

SAMA (PMC 22.1-1981), Functional Diagramming of Instrument and Control System (SAMAPMC22-1.pdf)

ISA S5.1 Draft 4 10/2000, Instrumentation Symbols and Identification (Clause xx.pdf)

    NEM-tronic (1KZ08.02/03.01), Standard Specification for Functional Control Diagrams(SPECFCD 1KUZ08.02-03 Rev-0.pdf)

Note: I like to thank Nem-tronics for use of their document as a reference.

ACTION: Please review the reference material. If you have other material that is relevant to thiscommittee and wish to distribute, then please forward to Loanna for submittal to the committee

    archives.

    REPORT OUTLINE

ISAs Style Guide requires a technical report to have the following outline:

    PrefaceForward

ACTION: The bodys content is where we need to prepare our text. If you have somerecommendation on the material that needs to be included in the body, please forward them tome.

For example, please note that S5.1 and PMC 22.1 original content describes the functions foundwith electric-analog system of the 70s. With todays microprocessor technology, functions within

function blocks have grown. Thus, I hope our committee can expand on the legacy symbols anddiscuss symbols for:

Advanced controllerDiscrete Device DriverStatusDigital transfersHand/Auto Station variationMathematical expressionsSpecial filterFunctions outside transfer block

For the April message, I will expand further on the outline and content of our technical report.

    Thanks
