THIRD SUNDAY OF LENT First Reading: Exodus 20:1-17 Through Moses, God passed on the commandments he wished all people to follow. He tells us not to worship idols or take the name of the Lord in vain. All the laws God gave to us, if followed, would ensure that we could live in peace and harmony with one another as he had planned. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 1:22-25 Paul tells the Corinthians that Christ is the power and the wisdom of God. Although they claimed to possess wisdom, “God’s folly is wiser than men, and his weakness is more powerful than men.” Gospel: John 2:13-25 Jesus went to the temple of Jerusalem to find merchants there selling sheep and doves. He knocked over their tables and drove the animals away. The merchants asked him for a sign that he was authorized to do this. He told them to “destroy this temple (referring to his body) and in three days I will raise it up.” The merchants misunderstood, and did not believe he could rebuild in three days what had taken nearly 50 years to build. Still many believed in him, after seeing the miracles he had performed.

Keep in mind that an early pledge will allow for a monthly payment plan.

DEFENDING OUR RELIGIOUS LIBERTY #158 The Catholic Church invests in the common good, for instance, by establishing and running schools, hospitals, universities, charities and social services. Our government and society have long relied on them for help and taken advantage of the vast network that churches and religious institutions provide to aid people in need and to help form good citizens. But, when we are told we’ve got to stop being who we are, to put aside our beliefs, or plainly go against our conscience in order to be allowed to contribute to the common good, we must speak out. If you haven’t done so already, please voice your opposition to the federal health care mandate by calling President Obama at the White House at 202-456-1111 or U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Sylvia Mathews Burwell at 202-205-5445. Let them know that the mandate is in violation of our First Amendment right to religious freedom.

SUMMER MISSION TRIP ADULT CHAPERONES NEEDED

We are looking for a male and female adult to chaperone our St. Peter Claver teens who will be serving in the City of Hartford with the Catholic Heart Work Camp Sunday night July 12th through Saturday morning July 18th. The $355 cost of registration can be paid by the Parish if necessary. Since we are serving locally, we can split duty if you are only able to serve a few days & nights, but not the whole week. This will be a very rewarding and meaningful experience! You will work alongside and guide our group of students at the work-sites by day and eat, sleep and celebrate your faith with them at the host site in the evenings. For more information check out: www.workcamp.com and call Anne Carroll with any questions at 860-561-4912.

In this Sunday’s Gospel, we hear about Jesus at the Temple in Jerusalem, a special holy place for the Jewish people. Jesus became angry because merchants were selling ani-mals to be offered in sacrifice at the Temple. Jesus cleared out the merchants and mon-eychangers from the Temple area to teach them that the Temple is “His Father’s House” and not a marketplace. Jesus says that He will tear down the Temple and put it back to-gether again in three days. He was referring to Himself as the Temple. When Jesus died on Good Friday, He knew He would come back to life in three days. The people didn't un-derstand. But when He rose from the dead, they saw for themselves, and many believed. Lent is a time for all of us to tear down whatever keeps us from recognizing Jesus!

LENT ~ FASTING & FEASTING!

Lent is more than just a time of fasting. It should also be a joyous time of feasting!

It is a Season in which we could try to:

Fast from worry; Feast on hope! Fast from complaining; Feast on appreciation!

Fast from anger; Feast on patience! Fast from gossip; Feast on prayer!

Fast from unhappiness; Feast on gratitude!

“Lord, you have the words of everlasting life.”

John 6:68

Students received “Rice Bowls” to help Catholic Relief Services provide food, clean water and homes to those in need. We kindly ask all families to fill their “bowl” to share the love of Christ this Lent. Many families place it on their table to remind them of others who have no food. Please return all “bowls” by your child’s last class session. Thanks so much for your generosity to those in desperate need!

Daylight Savings Time begins this

Sunday, March 8th.
