Коротка історія

Слово "пасха" походить з єврейського "песах", що

значить "перехід". Тут мова про перехід Господнього

ангела, який одної ночі вбив усіх єгипетських

первенців, коли фараон не хотів відпустити

ізраїльський народ, а перейшов повз доми ізраїльтян,

одвірки домів яких були помазані кров'ю однорічного

ягняти. Слово "пасха" у жидів означало також ягня,

якого заколювали на Пасху, а потім і сам день свята на

згадку про визволення з Єгипту дістав назву Пасхи.

Для апостолів і перших християн Пасха-Перехід

стала символом іншого переходу — подвійного

переходу Ісуса Христа: від життя до смерти і від смерти

до життя. Перший перехід дав основу для хресної, а

другий для воскресної і радісної Пасхи. Апостоли й

перші християни святкували разом із жидами свою

християнську Пасху, але не радісну, а сумну і з постом,

бо вона була для них річницею Христових мук і смерти.

Пасхальний агнець євреїв став для християн

прообразом Ісуса Христа, Який, наче невинне

ягня, приніс себе в жертву за гріхи цілого світу.

Звідси в богослуженні його називають пасхальним

агнцем або коротко Пасхою. "Бо Пасха наша, — каже

святий апостол Павло, — Христос, принесений у

жертву" (1 Кор. 5,7).

У II ст. разом із хресною Пасхою починає також

входити в практику і радісна Пасха на честь Христового

Воскресення, яку святкують у неділю після жидівської

Пасхи. Собор у Нікеї (325) вирішив, що всі християни

мають святкувати празник Пасхи того самого дня: що

не можна йти за жидівським звичаєм, а треба

празнувати Пасху в неділю, після першої повені місяця,

після весняного рівнодення.

У ІV-V ст. святкування празника Пасхи

продовжується з одного дня на цілий тиждень, який

зветься "світлим тижнем" на противагу до тижня перед

Великоднем, що має назву "Великого", або

"Страсного". В Єрусалимі найбільш урочисті були

перші три дні Пасхи, що Східна Церква практикує і

сьогодні.

З богослужінь празника Христового Воскресення на

особливу увагу заслуговує пасхальна утреня, яку

можна б назвати величним гимном прослави Христа

-Переможця. Її авторство приписують великому

богослову Східної Церкви й великому митцеві слова

– святому Йоану Дамаскину (к. 676 — к. 749).

Ймовірно, що вона укладена на основі пасхальних

проповідей святих Отців – Григорія Богослова,

Григорія Ниського й Йоана Золотоустого. Зміст

воскресної утрені глибоко-догматичний, форма

високо-поетична, тон дуже радісний і переможний.

Радіймо, бо в цей тріумфальний день, Ісус доказав

Своїм славним воскресенням, що Він смерть подолав,

а життя буде мати останнє слово.

З нагоди світлого празника Христового Воскресіння, в

цьому roci Божого Милосердя засилаємо наші найщиріші

друзям, рівно ж всім старшим віком і хворим, які не

Dear Beloved Parishioners, Visitors and Guests,

Through His Resurrection from the dead, Christ has opened the gates

of Hades and restored the image of God to us and is constantly renewing

us through His Church. Christ's Resurrection is a foretaste of our own

resurrection and proof of our salvation.

Christ's Resurrection must be our own personal Easter as expressed

in Baptism, we die and rise with Christ. God has given each of us gifts to

make His presence manifest in the world through us, showing the

power of His love and Resurrection, giving mankind a stronger faith

and hope, for our victory is the Resurrection and our faith.

We, the Clergy of St. Josaphat Ukrainian Catholic Church, wish you,

our dear parishioners, a joyous Easter. May you truly experience the joy

of the healing power of the Risen Christ in your lives and in the lives of

your loved ones. May God bless you and keep you.

Velykden/ «Христос воскрес!» Ось уже понад 2000 років цими словами християни вітають один одного, сповіщаючи про найвеличнішу подію у світі – воскресіння Христове. Воскресіння Христове дало людям свободу, воно вказало шлях до спасіння. Переможено зло. Людство отримало вічний захист від нього великою ціною – смертю Спасителя на хресті. Коли Марія Магдалина, Петро й Іван прийшли до гробу Господнього, там нікого не було. Лише двоє ангелів запитали: «Чого шукаєте живого серед мертвих? Немає Його тут, бо воскрес». Своїм воскресінням Христос переміг смерть, яка досі була платою за гріхи. А подолавши смерть, тим самим очистив людей від гріха. Саме тому в пасхальному тропарі співаємо: «Христос воскрес із мертвих, смертю смерть подолав, і тим, що в гробах, життя дарував». Для того, щоб подолати смерть, Ісус мусив померти. Чому саме Він, а не хтось інший? І чому, якщо Він Бог, Христос не відвернув від Себе цих страждань? Треба було, щоби постраждала людська плоть. Якби на хресну смерть за гріхи всього людства пішов би простий чоловік, він би не воскрес. А в Ісуса окрім людської була ще й Божественна природа, він був Богочоловіком, і саме тому міг здолати смерть. – Як Бог Ісус знав, що Йому треба понести страждання. У Молінні про чашу якраз про ці два моменти найбільше оповідається, –– «Знаю: хай буде воля не Моя, а Твоя», і каже: «Хай йде мимо Мене чаша ця». І тут же: «Хай буде воля Твоя». Знає, що Йому треба йти на хрест волею Божества, але як людина каже: «Я не хочу страждати». Просить, щоб Господь відмінив для Нього цю місію і в той же час терпить. Христос знав, що Його чекає зрада. Проте не покинув Своїх учнів, а навпаки – перед Тайною вечерею омив їм ноги. – І сказав: «Так, як Я робив, так і ви робіть. Якщо Я, Учитель, вам омиваю ноги, то показую приклад, як ви повинні чинити у своєму житті. Тому що Я прийшов не для того, щоб мені служили, а Я прийшов для того, щоб послужити людям». Зміст цієї події в житті апостолів та Ісуса Христа дуже простий: ми приходимо в цей світ, щоби виконати якусь місію, місію життєву, – Господь кожній людині дає талант і вона через примноження свого таланту несе свою місію. В останні дні земного життя Христос встановлює таїнство святої Євхаристії. Його чекає смерть, якою Він викупить людство від гріха і подарує життя вічне. Але чи прийме людство цей дар? Чи прийме заплачену за це ціну? Ісус чинить дуже благородно: маючи повноту Божої влади, не встановив її ні над ким, не впокорив Собі нікого. Натомість залишив заповідь любові.

Easter "We must strive to be found partakers of Christ's Resurrection, and "pass from death" to life while we are in this body. We must die therefore, to the devil, and live to God: we must perish to iniquity that we may rise to righteousness…As we have borne the image of the earthly, so let us bear the image of Him Who is from heaven, we must greatly rejoice over this change, whereby we are translated from earthly degradation to heavenly dignity through His unspeakable mercy, Who descended to our estate that He might promote us to His. Thus has Christ fulfilled Adam's quest for restoration." (St. Pope Leo the Great) Imagine what great event has taken place. Mankind was placed in Paradise, and through his disobedience, lost it. Death looms in his mind, losing a perfect Paradise, mankind tried to make Paradise on earth. He became self-centered and tried to cover up his loss with wealth, possessions and prestige. He would do anything even kill his neighbor to obtain this. Mankind had forgotten that he is made in God's image and that we are called to love Him with our whole heart and our neighbor as ourselves. Outwardly, he appeared successful and rich, but on the inside, his soul was unclean. God made many attempts through the Prophets to remind us of our dignity as children of God and to prod us to reclaim our place in Paradise. Then a great day came. A king came, not an earthly king, but God Himself, Jesus Christ came to us. Christ saw the misery caused by sin and selfishness, that man was powerless to overcome. He had compassion on us and cleansed us with His Precious Blood He shed on the Cross, and clothed us anew with the robe of resurrection, making us His children. Good children are those who love their parents and obey their instructions for their benefit. Good parents care for their children and will not give them bad instructions. Christ and God His Father, is our Father are the perfect parents who want to raise us as their children. This is how God is glorified in us. When Christ rose from the dead, we were raised from darkness to light and from a miserable state to Paradise. "But to those who did accept him he gave power to become children of God to those who believe in his name." (John 1 ; 12) Christ does not discriminate. He seeks all of us and died for all of us. Through Baptism He made us true children of God, and we are transformed and protected by His grace. We are nurtured in His Church and strive to become like Him, to become good children and glorify His name. With the Resurrection and our faith, we become children of God. We no longer fear death, because by His resurrection: 'Christ is risen from the dead and 'conquered death by death, and to those in the graves He granted life.' Now we too can have eternal life with Him and return to Paradise. Let's give thanks for this great blessing that has been given to us through His death on the Cross and glorious Resurrection. We worship and we glorify Him, now and ever and forever. Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!

TRE ORE – The Seven Last Words of Christ

The “Three Hours Agony” or Tre Ore is a liturgical service held on Good Friday from noon to 3 o’clock to commemorate the Passion of Christ. Specifically, it refers to the three hours that Jesus hung on the Cross and includes a series of homilies on the seven last words of Christ. Father Barron was invited by Cardinal Timothy Dolan to preside over the Tre Ore service at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, and the content of his presentation is being featured here.
