Accelerating Innovation: Lessons from Recent Policy Reforms and Successful Funding ModelsRegulatory changes within the past two years have attempted to motivate and accelerate innovation specifically as a result of Japan’s Act on Promotion of Healthcare Policy and the Plan for Promotion of Medical Research and Development. The panel will look at examples such as key shifts to accelerate regenerative medicine and new investments in novel business models, such as the GHIT Fund, that facilitate public-private collaboration in translation research and product development in infectious disease. Discussion will focus on the progress achieved, lessons learned, and implications for future policy adjustments that steer support to particular research areas.

The panelists will examine the advantages of western biotech companies doing Japan and/or Asia regional deals as part of an overall financing strategy, and how “traditional” western venture capital and equity funding comes into play.  The panel will also discuss key success factors that improve the probability of successfully consummating a deal in Japan, as well as ideas on how to expedite the entire due diligence and deal process with companies in Japan.
