SMART ANIMALS By Mrs Madhu Wal As a child way back in the sixties in Patiala (Punjab), my English Teacher Mr Green, got me a baby parrot which he had found abandoned in a tree. Being an only child, I was delighted to get a fluffy companion, who grew up as a real smart Alec. I had named him “Mithoo” which means “parrot “in colloquial Hindi. Mithoo learnt to say his own name and was often heard chanting” Meeya Mithoo” in different varieties of tones. He also learnt to call out my name as well, and many a time, he would call out “Madhu”. I taught him to recite a poem with a variation which he would recite with great aplomb: “Polly put the kettle on, Polly put the kettle on, Mithoo take it off again We’ll all have tea” The clarity with which he recited the verse was incredible, and curious neighbours and visitors often came around to see this miraculously intelligent parrot. He started imitating me the way I would answer my mother, when she called out to me to come into the house when I was playing in the orchard outside our house. Often when she called out my name, “Mithoo” would answer on my behalf, which would cause considerable confusion as she would assume I had heard her call and when she found that I had not landed up home, she would be annoyed. Sometimes we let “Mithoo” out of his cage, and he would fly around the house and them amicably get back to his cage when required. His cage was mostly hanging outside in the garden and shortly we found that he was being visited by a lot of other parrots who would hover around his cage engaged, as if in animated conversation with him. One day we found that somehow his cage door had slid open and “ Mithoo” was sitting on top of his cage amidst many other parrots. I was expecting that soon he would decide to go back into his cage but I was heartbroken when to my dismay, I found, that he just flew off with the other parrots. I waited for many days hoping against hope that maybe he would come back, but he never did. Meanwhile, my maternal aunt who lived in Cochin with her husband who worked in the Indian Navy, mentioned in a letter that she wrote that in her garden among a bunch of parrots, she heard very distinctly one parrot calling out “ Madhu” and reciting “Polly put the kettle on” My aunt did not know that my parrot had flown off never to return. I’m convinced that it was my “ Mithoo” who must have for some reason made that long journey from a small town in Punjab to Cochin in Kerala (South of India) because it is too much of coincidence for any other parrot to be able to recite ‘Polly put the kettle on”!!!! Deepest Condolences to Mr. Shamim Hosen [Senior English Teacher] for the sad demise of his father on the 2nd. Congratulations to Faiyaaz A. Jameel for obtaining admission at LA TROBE UNIVERSITY, MELBOURNE to study Bachelor of Civil Engineering. Congratulations to Mr. Shakhawat Hossain (Admin Executive) on his marriage. We wish him a very happily married life.

STS INTER CRICKET CARNIVAL- 2017

DPS STS School Dhaka recently participated in the first of its kind inaugural STS GROUP CORPORATE CRICKET

TOURNAMENT involving three other teams from the group, INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL OF DHAKA, APOLLO HOSPITALS

DHAKA, STS GROUP DHAKA, organized by the STS Group and played at ISD Cricket field on the 27th and 28th January

2017.

This was the first Edition of the tournament that was modelled on the types of IPL and BPL, except that the matches

were reduced to 12 overs an innings instead of the regular T20 format.

In this still shortest version, DPS STS School team comprising of 15 best players from the school, participated and for the

first time played on a matted pitch, which took toll on the team as they lost very hard fought first two games.

In the very first game against Apollo, DPS managed to restrict the opponent for a paltry 74 in 12 overs. The bowlers did a

fantastic job including DPS captain, ex – Bangladesh national fast bowler, Mr. Neaz Morshed Nahid, who returned

figures of 4 for 16. Needing 75 to register their first ever match, DPS were bundled out for a trifling 69. The captain of

the team attributed the team’s lack of practice on the matted pitch as the reason behind the heartbreaking loss. The

second game was also hard fought, but the batsmen failed once again. Adding to this agony, the bowlers failed to

maintain their line and length giving away 35 extras. DPS hence lost against ISD and their hopes of making it to the finals

vanished.

In the last match next day, however, DPS had nothing to lose and they were playing for their pride. With hard hitting

cameos from Mr. Manoj Kumar, Mr. Al Amin and a last ball six from Mr. Shihab, DPS managed a fighting total of 119 for

6 in their stipulated 12 overs. The bowlers and the fielders next put their blood and souls together to bowl out STS

Group under 100. DPS finally won the match by 19 runs. The Man of the Match and Bowler of the Tournament, Mr. Neaz

Morshed Nahid, finally had something to smile for.

DPS STS School was placed on the 3rd Spot with Apollo Hospitals winning the Finals against ISD. STS Group finished last

in the tournament. In the presentation ceremony the CEO of the STS group, Mr. Pervez was delighted at the successful

conduct of the tournament and he added that the tournament ‘exceeded his expectations’. He encouraged the

organizers and the organizers in turn vouched that the IPL – BPL style tournament of the STS Group will now continue in

the years to come.
