INTRODUCTIONGood evening and

thank you for joining us at tonight’s 2020 State of the City. As I reflected on this past year, I asked my-self, “What is the secret

to our success?” Well, the secret is not so secret. Our success is built on three key and enduring values: engagement, stability and respect. It is these foun-dational values that have made Temple City a com-munity where everyone feels welcomed, cared for,

and a place everyone can call home. ENGAGEMENT

A hallmark of Temple City’s success is how the community collaborative-ly works together. Follow-ing are a few examples where this engagement has produced real divi-dends to improve local quality of life.

Our collaboration with Temple Sheriff ’s Station is an excellent example of how trying new types of engagement, while main-taining tried and true methods, can lead to a saf-er community.

In January, we held our first-ever Burgers and the Brass event where resi-dents, after work, had an opportunity to casually meet with local law en-forcement over burgers. Our Neighborhood Watch Program continues to pro-vide a foundation to our community-based polic-ing approach.

Our Monthly Law En-forcement Meetings with Temple Sheriff ’s Station also provide direct lines of communication and ac-countability regarding lo-cal crime and public safe-ty trends. Because of the community’s partnership with local law enforce-

ment, I’m proud to report that Part 1 crimes (serious crimes) are down over 20 percent from last year and are at a historic five-year low. Additionally, Temple City once again ranked in the top 10 percent of all cities in California when it comes to public safety.

Our engagement took an artistic turn this year with our first-ever Photo Contest. The contest asked residents to take their best shot at capturing the city’s spirit. More than 150 pho-tos were submitted by 49 local photographers, who captured the diversity of Temple City’s people, landscapes, and events. Social media is changing

our world. The city’s social media accounts continue to be a critical driver of community engagement. STABILITY

Each year, indepen-dent auditors examine our books to let the city coun-cil know of any concerns regarding the city’s finan-cial operations. Tonight, I am proud to inform you that our recent audit passed with flying colors, like those of years past. RESPECT

In the five years I’ve served on the city council, the value of respect has helped make Temple City so unique.

It’s this respect that

permeates amongst the city council and its deci-sion-making process. As a city each of us brings their own unique life and work experience to serve the community. When we cannot reach consensus, we respect each other’s opinions and decisions.

The values that embody the Temple City commu-nity, engagement, stability, and respect, play out daily in our classrooms, at our parks, with our neighbors, and during city council meetings. It is these values that sustain us, that fill us with hope for the future, and that make Temple City an amazing place to live.

Community Leader Program

California American Water and Transtech Engineers have joined with the Chamber of Commerce to give back to the community. Their support greatly assists our engagement with both the business community and the many civic and service organizations in Temple City. Their support is greatly appreciated.

College Torch is a small boutique consulting firm that works directly with families to support students during college planning.

College Torch guides high school students through the entire college admissions process, cre-ating and applying to a list of colleges where stu-

dents will thrive and be positioned to achieve their goals.

Families that work with College Torch for a longer period of time will benefit from more support: course se-lection, test planning,

extracurricular and volunteering guidance, time management, summer planning, etc.

Families choose to work with a college coun-selor because they want a guide for the stressful, high-stakes college admissions process.

College Torch families know how crucial it is for a student to take advantage of their high school years in order to achieve success in the future.

When is the perfect time to start college coun-seling? For most students, ninth grade.

However, some students choose to start earlier or later. For example, if they’re applying to private high school, College Torch helps students in mid-dle school.

Robert Powers is the founder of College Torch

College counseling comes to Temple CityCollege Torch is pleased to join the Temple City Chamber of Commerce

and works direct-ly with students as a college coun-selor.

He has both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Johns Hop-kins University. In addition to his college counsel-ing experience, Mr. Powers reads ap-plications annually for a competitive national scholar-ship, so he knows what a stand-out application looks like.

College Torch also offers online tutoring in English and history from Rose Wong, a senior at Duke University and the local/national news editor for the Duke Chronicle.

Last held in 2010, the decennial population count, or census, is key to ensuring local commu-nities across the country receive adequate funding from the federal govern-ment.

With the 2020 census fast approaching, Temple City Mayor Nanette Fish is encouraging all resi-dents to participate by completing the 10-ques-tion survey distributed by the U.S. Census Bureau.

The census is conduct-ed every 10 years, with the data collected during each census period determin-ing funding amounts for early childhood education programs, infrastructure improvements and much more.

The data collected is also used to determine California’s apportion-ment in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“The information our residents provide to the Census Bureau will help to ensure critical feder-

al funding for important programs that truly make an impact in our com-munity,” Fish said, noting funding could be used to subsidize senior meals and provide recreational scholarships to children participating in city pro-gramming, among other causes.

Temple City house-holds will begin receiving official Census Bureau mail, March 12, with an invitation to complete the short survey online, by phone or by mail. This year marks the first time residents will be able to submit census responses online.

All homes will have re-ceived information about the census by April 1, which is nationally known as Census Day. Responses are required by law; failure to respond will result in a reminder by mail in April, along with a paper ques-tionnaire that can be com-pleted and mailed back.

Beginning in May,

Census Bureau represen-tatives will begin visiting households that have not responded. The last day for residents to submit a response is July 31.

By law, responses to the census questionnaire cannot be shared with any other agency or person. All responses are confi-dential and protected un-der Title 13, which makes it illegal for census data to be used for immigration regulation or other law enforcement.

After collecting and ag-gregating the population data, the Census Bureau will disseminate the re-sults to the president and Congress in December.

For more informa-tion, visit 2020census.gov, which provides in-formation in 12 non-En-glish languages, with cer-tain items available in 59 non-English languages, or phone the Census Bu-reau’s Call Center at 800-923-8282.

So, about a year ago, I started seeing ads for di-rect-to-consumer clear aligner orthodontics on social media. I was curi-ous; I ordered a starter kit to check it out … for only $95 bucks.

Last week, I read a news report coming from NBC Health; it brought back some memories.

The compelling mes-sage for direct-to-con-sumer clear aligner commodities is cost and remote care: “40-60% off and you don’t even have to go to the dentist or ortho-dontist.”

Sometimes, when I’m relaxing and breathing slowly in through my nose and out through my mouth (Mr. Miyagi style), I ponder health meta-phors or analogies for do-it-yourself orthodontic models; it’s not as easy as it sounds.

Using a colonoscopy example, it’s like receiv-ing the kit in the mail, constructing the device at

home, aiming it and con-ducting the inner journey all by yourself, returning the results to a clinician you’ll never meet, and waiting 90 days for the re-sults.

I’ve provided Invisalign care since 2002. I men-tor other GP Invisalign doctors; we’ve even won awards. And I’ve never taken my own impression and I suck at selfies. I’d have zero confidence in the do-it-myself result.

Unsupervised care is inexcusable. Beginning care at home or a scanning facility isn’t close to meet-ing the standard of care. Mail order plastic is 2002 Invisalign quality.

Invisalign isn’t inex-pensive. We know there’s

a want. Near the end of 2019, we dropped our fee by $1000 (it’s our new fee) and saw an overwhelm-ing response. Align will soon offer an approach for less challenging cas-es, rivaling the financed cost of direct-to-consum-er products. Care Credit offers interest free financ-ing for $188 per month in our practice. We’re in-troducing Compassionate Finance to young people without established credit and anyone who’s experi-enced credit setbacks.

Our vision is all about helping people we see as family become their own best health advocates.

We’re on your side. We want you to do the right thing.

The Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act, passed by congress in December 2019, is seen as one of the most significant retire-ment system overhauls in recent years. Some highlights below:

Tender Age of 72 Previously, retirement account holders

were required to take RMDs the year they turn 70.5.

With the new Act, that age is increased to 72. However, anyone who turned 70.5 last year still must follow the old rules.

Also, a person can now contribute to a

traditional IRA after attaining the age of 70.5, provided that individual has qualified income.

Stretch IRA is No MoreBy the old rule, money left in retirement accounts af-

ter owner dies could be distributed over the life of the beneficiary.

However, the new rule stipulates that retirement as-sets now have to be dispersed to the beneficiary within 10 years after death, whether or not distributions of the original owner’s interests have begun.

However, exceptions are available for some bene-ficiaries, these include surviving spouses, under-age children, and disabled and chronically ill individuals. Surviving spouses can still elect to delay distributions until the end of the year that the original account owner would have attained age 70.5 (or age 72, as appropriate).

San Marino - Every month, thousands of homeowners are faced with the stressful dilemma of whether to buy first or sell first. You see, if you buy before selling, you could run the risk of owning two homes. Or, just as bad, if you sell first, you could end up homeless. It’s what insiders in the industry call the Real Estate Catch 22, and it’s an extremely anxious position to find yourself in. This financial and emotional tightrope is one you usually have to walk alone because most agents have no way of helping you with this predica-ment. But one local realtor is using a unique Guaranteed Sale Pro-gram which solves this dilemma. This program guarantees the sale of your present home before you take possession of your new one. If your home doesn’t sell in 120 days, they will buy it from you them-selves for the previously agreed price ensuring that you never get caught in the Real Estate Catch 22. Before you hire any professional, you should research the market to find out who can do the best job for you. When interviewing agents, find out what kind of guarantee they are willing to give you with respect to the selling of your home. Unfortunately, you’ll find that most agents simply cannot make such a guarantee. To help you learn more about this program and how it can make your move less stressful, a FREE special report has been prepared entitled “How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes.” To order a FREE Special Report, call toll-free 1-888-300-4632 and enter 1022. You can call any time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.Get your free special report NOW to find out how to guarantee the cash sale of your home.

Stairs: functional and decorative element for new home

You probably live in a single-story house, the most popular architec-ture in the valley. If so, this article will be an informative one. if you live in a two-story house, have stairs or are plan-ning to build a new home with stairs, here are some ideas for you.

Stairs are functional architectural elements that can also serve as decorative pieces. I see them as large functioning

sculptures. There are dif-ferent structural methods for building stairs which are an architectural de-sign decision before it is built.

Metal, wood, glass, tile and carpet are some of the materials which can be used for steps. Let’s focus on the decorative aspects:

• Winding forms add dynamism to the space.

• To highlight the presence of a stair-way, the steps can be covered with a colored carpet.

• Ornamen-tal tiles cover-ing the risers will complement Spanish-Mediter-ranean style archi-tecture.

• Projecting steps offer min-imalist aesthet-ics. This type of stairway also acts as a decorative el-

ement by allowing light to reach the level below where everyone can enjoy more natural light.

• Stairways usually have an available space under-neath which can be used as a sitting area, for display shelves or storage.

• Cement, metal or glass materials offer a more in-dustrial atmosphere.

• A straight staircase, with nothing underneath, adds an elegant minimal-ism.

• I like real wood steps with black metal guard rails and a wooden handrail combination.

• Spiral staircases, with steps spiraling around a central pole, are best for sav-Continued on Page 6

The U.S. population is aging. Today, there are more than 46 million old-er adults age 65 and older living in the U.S. Already, the middle-aged out-number children, but the country will reach a new milestone in 2034.

Older adults are pro-jected to outnumber kids for the first time in U.S. history. Every year health care costs increase due

to the aging of the popu-lation. Although policy-makers can do practically nothing to affect these fac-tors, seniors may be able to greatly reduce these costs with preventative health care.

What if instead of pay-ing for care aids, home healthcare support and expensive mobility aids, seniors could improve their level of function

as they age and prevent many of the injuries that

impact them the most? Britton Chiropractic in Temple City offers a great solution to these issues. With a simple 3-month “Functional Mobility” program, seniors can ex-pect improved functional movement, joint pain re-lief and improved health and wellness.

This program combines chiropractic, massage and functional exercises to

build strength, increase range of motion, improve balance and enhance per-formance of daily activi-ties. To relieve joint pain we utilize an “Activator” adjusting tool for many seniors.

Britton Chiropractice can pinpoint the prob-lem and apply the specif-ic force needed to restore movement to the joint without subjecting the

body to any extra forces.Clients can book a free

initial consultation by phoning 626-447-0497. Britton Chiropractic is available Monday through Saturday for free consulta-tions of approximately 10 minutes.

Clients should bring x-rays, MRIs or relevant medical reports for a free second opinion. Medicare is accepted.

TCUSD has begun accept-ing new student enrollment applications for the 2020-2021 school year. All new students should first go to https://ae-riesnet.tcusd.net/air/ to begin the process for 2020-2021 enrollment.  New this year is that once this first step of on-line enrollment is completed, all new students in grades TK through 8th grade will com-plete the new student enroll-ment process at the District Office located at 9700 Las Tu-nas Drive rather than at the school site. An appointment is needed to complete this pro-cess at the District Office and can be made after the online enrollment step has been com-pleted. All new high school students, grades 9 through 12, will complete the new student enrollment process at TCHS, 9501 Lemon Ave.
