MARCH 2019 VOLUME 78 NUMBER 3
CO-PRESIDENT'S CORNERJOHN & CAROL BALDO
Great attendance for our February meeting! Stein Fjell is thriving. Good to know that we exceeded our new member goal for last year!Grateful thanks to the refreshment committee forthe tasty Valentine’s Day themed spread. Thanks also to Bill and Marianne for their presentation on “Life and Love in 19th century Sweden”. We got quite a detailed insight into how people lived, and moved around, back then!
Volunteering is a very important part of Sons of Norway membership! Thanks to all those who helped at Ski for Light this year. Clearly our helpers, and the snacks provided, made a huge difference to the participants.
Barneløpet will be on February 23rd. Stein Fjell sends a good number of volunteers to help with course monitoring and food prep etc., each year.Elliott gave us an enthusiastic description of the fun to be had!
Kari Wright and Ginger have been busy ensuringthat we file the financial reports in a timely fashion. Meanwhile, Kris Bakich has collated all the hours reported by our members. We totaled an impressive 602 Community Hours and 3,431 Fraternal hours. Don’t forget to record your hours regularly and do remember that attending meetings and driving to and fro counts.
Congratulations to Angela Callow-Mosher for earning her Level 1 Norwegian Cooking pin.
We encourage everyone to work on cultural awards!
Hope to see many of you at the observatory in Berthoud on Friday March 1st!

CALLING ALL BUNAD DOLLS, TROLLS, AND VIKINGS
During the month of May, we will have the librarydisplay case to promote Stein Fjell and Norway. Since May is the month of Norway's National Day or Constitution Day, we want to create the feeling of the parades that occur all over Norwayon May 17th. To do so we need small figurines, statues, dolls, woodcarvings, etc. to make a miniature parade. Do you have any that you would be willing to loan for this purpose? They should be larger than 4" tall, but shorter than 16"tall. Bring your dolls, trolls, or other figurines to the March or April lodge meetings. Make sure your name is attached to each item in a way thatdoes not damage the item. Place each individualitem inside a clear plastic Ziplock bag that also has your name on it. The Ziplock bags will work
2
to protect your treasures during transporting and handling. Any and all help is truly appreciated
Kathy will have a plastic tub to receive any dolls or trolls or figurines you have to contribute to the May display at the library. Items needs to be 4"-16", labeled with you name and inside a plastic ziplock bag for protection.Mange Tusen Takk in advance and if you haveany questions please contact Kathy Browne 970-744-0922.
A LOOK BACK TO LAST MONTH'S PROGRAM AND LODGE MEETING
Our February meeting included a program by BillNesse, who took us through the life of his ancestors in Sweden.
Membership has it's own rewards:
Marian, with the help of Ginger, awarded the Cultural Skills pin for the first level of Norwegian cooking to Angela for completing all the requirements.
Marian read the citation from SON, as Ginger presented the pin to Angela.

NORWEGIAN WORDS FOR THIS MONTH:

OUR MARCH PROGRAM
The Night Sky....How did those Vikings Navigatethe Seas?
Although there is no written knowledge of how the Vikings traveled the seas there has been research showing they used a “Sunstone”. Comelearn how these amazing navigators traveled far and wide even on cloudy or foggy days.
The Little Thompson Observatory in Berthoud will host the Stein Fjell Lodge on Friday, March 1, 2019 at 6:30pm. 850 Spartan Avenue.
Deborah and Paul Price will share their knowledge of the night sky in a warm room and then lead us up to view the stars using the observatory’s telescope. The start of the evening will be looking at the Star Wall, a visual aid that allows you to see the night sky throughout the year. This room is heated and has seats for you to relax as you learn. The second part of the evening will have us climbing stairs to gaze at the night sky with the large telescope. There are approximately 30 stairs with a hand rail and it is open to the night air. We will have our own “Sunstone” to look through. A reception will follow in the observatory. No matter what the weather is that night, we will meet.
The Observatory is on the grounds of Berthoud High School with parking on the back and east side of the school. There are a few handicap parking spots next to the observatory but are limited and it has a small bathroom. For those not needing handicap parking you will walk alonga fence on a gravel pathway to the building. Light is limited as you walk and flashlights are helpful.
