A lcoholics Anonymous was invited to participate in the
General Practitioner Training and Education Conference September 11-13, 2018 in Adelaide. We felt it was a great opportunity to share the message of recovery with Doctors from around Australia, who are often the first point of contact for those struggling with alcohol. As the Public Information Officer for Area B in South Australia I had the privilege of overseeing this event. We were able to attend the event and provide books and pamphlets to numerous Doctors participating in the conference. With a team of 6 volunteers we set up and staffed the mini booth over the 3 day conference. Overall the conference was well attended and feedback from attendee’s about our stall was very positive. We were told by many Doctors that they were pleased to see us at the conference. The Doctors
mainly spoke about their patients who have problems with alcoholism but found it hard reaching a meeting. We were able to offer suggestions such as phoning AA and speaking to another alcoholic before attending a meeting as well as support from the Doctor to attend AA. We were able to answer many questions and have open discussions about the nature of the disease with interested Doctors. We were able to obtain contact details from Doctors from around Australia who were interested in more information, pamphlets for their surgeries, follow up and contact with Public Information Officers in their areas, which was really positive. We were invited to attend GPTEC Event in Melbourne in 2019 and this information will be passed to the Area Committee in Melbourne. We were all grateful for the opportunity for service and to share the message.

The brown paper bag
A great many alcoholics in our part of the world still haven't heard of AA. You and your group can help carry the message by donating to the International Sponsorship Fund.
Each year, the Fellowship distributes the Founders Day brown paper bags to collect money to help carry the message to the still
suffering alcoholics in countries in South East Asia and the Pacific. Founders Day (June 10) is the anniversary of the day in 1935 when AA started. The brown paper bags symbolises "what it was like". What can your group do to help? Discuss this collection with the members of your group. As a group you might decide to: Read this notice out at the meeting. Circulate the brown paper bag separately to your normal collection.
Announce that all the money collected for that meeting will go into the brown paper bag for international sponsorship. Invite members to give more than they usually do because this is a special collection to
help alcoholics in countries
that don't have the huge number of AA meetings and other resources that we have. Cheques and money orders should be made out to: General Service Board of AA. Any questions, please phone the General Service Office on
(02) 9599 8866. Please post your brown bag with donations to International Sponsorship Fund General Service Office of AA 48 Firth Street ARNCLIFFE NSW 2205 Or Direct Deposit: (your Group name)FDISF ANZ BSB: 012006 Account # 009750529
Where does your contribution go?
It was resolved in 2003 that 75% of the
International Literature fund collection be
made available to assist countries in the
Asia/Oceania Zone with their literature and
PI&CPC activities in the Asia/Oceania Zone
and the remaining 25% be forwarded to New York General Service Office as Australia’s
contribution to the International Literature
Fund.
Most recently the 25% that was forwarded to GSO New York was used to translate the Big
Book into Punjabi. The Big Book is currently
translated in 69 languages, with 21
additional translations in various stages of
completion, including the Navajo Big Book, and revisions to the Croatian and Slovakian
Big Books.

Facilities Co-ordinator sobriety from picking up cigarette butts, group s e c r e t a r y , t r e a s u r e r , answering the 12 step phones, serving on the 12 step phone committee, DCM, Area chairman, area delegate attending conference, I was on the committee when we arranged the women’s 12 step
trip to India a highlight of my sobriety. I have always been a member of a group had a sponsor and sponsored. I have an understanding of the 12 steps and traditions and concepts for world service. I believe in the service structure and the principle of rotation. There is a lot of work to be carried out in the prisons to try and raise the AA profile it is my hope I can help show what AA can bring to the prisons in the spirit of cooperation. I am just finding my feet in this role as it is early days and I am grateful for the support I have received so far. I’m sure there will be times I may not live up t o t h e f e l l o w s h i p s expectations but as I sit here writing this I have all intentions of giving this service position my all. I am available to answer any questions, email me at [email protected] I look forward to meeting you as we trudge the road of happy destiny. Yours in service Maureen B . Nat i ona l Corrections Co Ordinator.
H i my name is Maureen and I’m an alcoholic
sober since 25th December 1991 by the grace of God and the fellowship of AA. I am happy to announce I was elected National Correctional Facilities Co-ordinator at the
2018 February board meeting, thanks to the board for the opportunity to serve the fellowship. I attended my first prison meeting at Boggo Road women’s prison in approx 1993 and attended regularly for many years. I was brought into this line of service by some very dedicated and committed women. Over the years I have been involved in this line of service I have seen many changes to the prison system including the women’s jail move to the Wacol facility in Brisbane and the closing of the Boggo Rd facility. I was on the Brisbane Central Service Office prison subcommittee and was also chairman of the committee. One of the things that kept br ing ing me back to corrections was the fact at my first prison meeting I saw a very good friend I used to drink with who was serving a very lengthy sentence I got to see firsthand where alcoholism could take me, by the grace of God I did not find myself jailed and there were many times it was possible that would be the outcome throughout my alcoholism. This has always been an area of service that I feel passionately about. I have held many service positions thorough my years of

Opals to Gem fields tag-along delivers much
need help for professionals in the outback
L ast year’s Outback Tag-a-long was “Opals to Gemfields via The Channel Country”. The purpose of the Tag-a-long was to sup-port lone members and carry the message to places where there are no mem-bers as well as supporting the small groups in remote areas. It turned out to be the most successful one so far, and a huge thank you must go to our Remote Communities Coordinator Di for all the preliminary work she did in contacting the many professionals be-fore we set off. The successes/highlights of the tag were: Working together with the fellow members of the Tag-a-long committee as well as the many members who travelled with us on the trip helping us carry the message. Without all mem-bers the Tag-a-long would not exist. In St. George - A meeting was held with the Health Professionals with AA members attending and passing the message on. Questions were asked, and pamphlets, posters and District Cards were greatly appreciated by them. In Cunnamulla – through the correspondence with
our Remote Communities Coordinator the journalist from the local paper at-tended before our Open meeting and had a chat with us and wrote an in-formative article for their paper. After the meeting we had a visit from 2 profes-sionals, one being the Do-mestic Violence Worker and the other the Police Liaison Officer. Both were pleased with us visiting their town and greatly appreciated the literature that we gave them. Contact numbers were shared. Six members attended to a request from an employment agency, to talk with their staff and workers. It was great to re-ceive questions from them and again pamphlets were handed out. The CEO of the agency was very pleased that we attended. District Cards were also left at the local Caravan Park. In Windorah – members met with the local clinic nurse and passed on pam-phlets and cards. A Big Book and One to Another were given to the local li-braries of Windorah and Stonehenge while cards were displayed at the Infor-mation Centres. In Longreach – A great chat was held with the Primary Health Care Staff, between AA members and staff members. Many questions were received and an-
swered with pamphlets and cards being given out. At the open meeting we had 4 professionals. Despite lack of profession-als at most of the actual meetings, connection was had with the communities while we were in their towns, which included group meals with lots of fun and laughter between the members and community. The Tag-a-long finished in Rubyvale with a great meet-ing and fellowship. The fel-lowship among the mem-bers throughout the Tag-a-long was fabulous. It was a wonderful way to connect with familiar friends and meet new ones while pass-ing on the AA message. This year’s Tag is under-way, and we will be travel-ling through Lightning Ridge-St. George-Mitchell-Morven-Miles-Chinchilla-Proston-Mundubbera- Bi-loela-Blackwater-Emerald-Barcaldine-Longreach-Winton. This Tag is very special as 10 of these towns have members with 7 of them having a very small group with a regular meet-ing. It will be wonderful to catch up with these mem-bers and enjoy a fellowship boost. Keep an eye on the Outback AA Website for up-dates: www.outback-aa-au.org

“Australia looks after Papua-New Guinea, Indonesia and many countries in South-East Asia such as Burma, Thailand, Viet Nam and Cambodia. New Zealand responds to the vast Area of Oceania, with its thousands of
tiny island communities”. It is unknown where this statement originated, but was possibly included as a result of some informal discussion at a previous Asia/Oceania Service Meeting. However, the Statement of Purpose of the AOSM quite clearly states: “The AOSM
recognizes that it has no authority over any AA service or group. The only decisions to be made by the AOSM are those which affect the meeting itself.” It also conflicts with our ‘I Am Responsible’ statement.

recommendation that the following text be included in the AA Group Handbook, under the heading ‘Service Sponsorship’:
A.A.’s “Third Legacy”, Service, is anything that helps us to reach a fellow sufferer. The A.A. Service Manual, The Guidelines and the Twelve Concepts for World Service are our main guides for all service. They have been put together using the knowledge gained f rom A.A. experience going back to A.A.’s
founders. Sponsorship in A.A. is basically the same, whether guiding another through A.A.’s Twelve Steps of recovery or in their service to their group. It can be defined as one alcoholic who has made progress in recovery and/or performance in service, sharing this experience with another alcoholic who is just commencing the journey in A.A. Both types of service spring from the spiritual aspects of A.A.’s three legacies, Recovery, Unity and Service. The basis of all sponsorship is the power of example. The Service Sponsor begins by encouraging the member to become active in their home group. As the member serves in different roles and levels of A.A. service, the Service Sponsor is not only a guide in service commitments and responsibilities, but also a useful resource for the member when encountering the unique vagaries that exist in A.A. service. A Service Sponsor is usually someone
who is knowledgeable in A.A. history, the Twelve Steps and the Twelve Traditions and has a reasonable background in A.A. service with a sound understanding of the Alcoholics Anonymous service structure. The service sponsor should be mindful that not all members will have the desire or experience to move beyond certain levels and, and therefore might be required to suggest tasks appropriate to individuals’ abilities and interests. Of course, our experience is, we can learn on the job in AA” Voting: For: 28; Against: 1; Abstentions: 0
