The visit is due to the partnership The Preston Campbell Foundation, Wesley Life-force Mission and Queensland Health endeavouring to promote positive emotional and mental health and well-being. Presto & Toops took the time to drop in at both Winton State School and St. Pat’s to kick the footy around with the kids whilst also encouraging discussion about emotional health and wellbeing. Later in the afternoon they drove out to the Correctional Services Work Camp outside of town to share their personal experiences with tough times and getting through them. “For myself, personally, there have been times in my life when I’ve struggled with some issues and tough times and the struggle almost cost me my life,” shared Campbell, “and it makes me feel good to know that we are able to get out and meet with so many of you sharing the importance of our message about mental health because it’s one of the highest death rates in our young men - we lose too many,” highlighted Campbell. Retired Gold Coast Titans Player Clinton Toopi stressed the importance of paying attention to our mates and rather than “judge or diagnose them - just to listen” and open the door for being a support or leading the way to a local support service. David Kerrigan from Central West QLD Health, and President of Central West Rugby League, joined the pair in the tour and acknowledged the “work effort and support from the Winton Shire Council and services” who facilitated various opportunities for the community to meet up with Presto & Clinton. The tour will move further West to Boulia, Bedourie, Birdsville, Windorah and Jundah. Preston Campbell and Clinton Toopi visited Winton State School. Photo and story by Tahnee Oakhill

COUNCIL UPDATE

Waltzing Matilda Centre UPDATE

A number of key elements of the planning for the reconstruction of the new Waltzing Matilda Centre have progressed. Council can supply the following information on the project:

The Architect: In April 2016, Winton Shire Council appointed architectural firm Cox Rayner to build the new Centre. Project Managers LGIS and Cox Rayner have held community and stakeholder consultation in Winton to discuss and review revised concept plans on:

27th – 28th April; 23th – 25th May; and 6th – 7th June 2016.

Cox Rayner are currently finalising a building design to suit the suggested input from those meetings.

The next scheduled visit from Cox Rayner, to present the latest design at a public meeting, is Thursday 23rd June 2016. The public meeting will be held at the Shire Hall at 5.30pm.

Interpretive Design: Four companies have been short listed by tender evaluation to present interpretive design proposals for the interior layout of the Centre. The four organisations will now provide presentations in Brisbane over the weekend to an assessment panel. The Acting CEO will represent Council at the presentations.

Public presentation – Thursday 23rd June @ Shire Hall, 5.30pm

COMMUNITY NEWS

An Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) is a lifesaving medical device that delivers a controlled electric shock to a person who is having a Sudden cardiac Arrest. It is small, portable and designed to be easily operated and used by any bystander, regardless of training.

An AED will not save every person who suffers a Sudden Cardiac Arrest, but an AED can increase survival rate to 50%.

With this in mind, if we are to improve Sudden Cardiac Arrest survivability in our community, we need to have as many people as possible trained in CPR and have a publicly accessible AED.

This is why through the efforts of a dedicated Local Ambulance Committee, Winton now has a community accessible defibrillator and residents are being encouraged to be trained and willing to provide CPR through the Queensland Ambulance Service CPR awareness campaign.

The AED in Winton is situated at the Visitor Information Centre in Elderslie Street

COMMUNITY NEWS

Those of us who attended the presentation by members of Winton’s 60 & Better Program last Saturday were treated to a lively demonstration of just how much fun you can have in your ‘mature’ years by becoming involved in learning something new. Following a series of workshops with Steve Mayer-Miller and Clare Apelt of Crossroad Arts, the participants in the project’s activities were eager to share with us the intricacies of body percussion and the physicality of chair dancing. We learned how to combine in partner-songs and joined in a sing-along, then even had a go at line-dancing. It was great to share the experience with members of the residential section of the hospital where Steve and Clare had also spent time during their program of celebrating the lives of older people in the community. Before being treated to an abundant ‘sixties’ afternoon tea we discovered our own musical talents in a rousing cha- cha performance with maracas and rhythm sticks. Growing older does not mean a dreary life. In Winton at least, it looks as though life is for living!
