4H Council Bent 4-H Council will meet March 7 at McClave Church. Council representatives from each club should be at this meeting. Remember you must attend at least one council designated activity in order to be eligible to show at the Bent County Fair. A list of 4-H dates is in this newsletter; activities that fulfill this requirement have an asterisk.

Shooting Sports Notes The 4-H Shooting Sports programs in Bent, Crowley, Kio-wa, Otero and Prowers Counties have agreed that mem-bers may attend practices in each of these counties. Mem-bers must have two safety meetings and a hunter safety card in order to practice in Bent, Crowley, Kiowa, Otero or Prowers Counties, participate in the Bent County Shoot or go to the State 4-H Shoot. You may attend safety meet-ings in any of these counties to fulfill this requirement. Shooting Sports members will receive an email with safety meeting dates. The Colorado 4-H Shooting Sports Program requires the use of trained and certified 4-H instructors at the county level to operate a live-fire range or to conduct any class in which firearms or archery equipment are handled. Bent County Certified leaders are Ben and Cin-dy Miller. To shoot at the Trap Club, you must first pay trap club fees. The trap club requires all fees be paid through Ben and/or Cindy Miller. All members can, of course, practice on their own.

Hunter’s Safety Class

Colorado Parks and Wildlife is sponsoring a Hunter’s Safe-ty Class at the Las Animas Fire Station March 21, 23 and 24 at 6 pm and March 25 at 8 am. Register at: https://register-ed.com/programs/colorado/98-colorado-hunter-education-course?. There is also a class in Rocky Ford the following week.

Scales for Sale Bent County Fair is selling their hog and sheep crate WW Paul mechanical scales. The scales will be available for viewing at small animal tagging on May 4. Sealed bids are accepted at the Extension Office until close of business May 8. Thanks to McClave FFA for making them look so great!

Conference & Camp Scholarships The District VI 4-H Senate has voted to provide scholarships for district 4-H members to attend state, regional, and district events. For Dare to Be You and Caballeros & Clovers 4-H Camps one scholarship will be offered for each county. For LDC, Youth Fest, District Retreat and State Conference two scholarship maximum will be offered for the whole district. A deposit for the registration amount will be held, but will only be deposited if the scholarship winner does not attend. Due dates for scholarships will be adver-tised in the newsletter. There is an application that must be completed. You can get the application from your local extension office.

Daniel Kasza Memorial Scholarship All District VI (Baca, Bent, Cheyenne, Crowley, Kiowa, Otero, and Prowers Counties) graduating seniors are encouraged to apply for the Daniel Kasza Memorial 4-H Scholarship. One $750 scholarship will be awarded to an eligible applicant. Criteria and applications are now available from SE Area Extension Offices and on the area website, and are due April 1. Contact Kaye, [email protected] or 719.829.4208, for more information.

Colorado 4-H Foundation Scholarships

The Colorado 4-H Foundation has a scholarship application program that awards over 20 scholarships to Colorado 4-H members. These scholarships all require 4-H membership, but focus on different fields of study and interest. The scholarship application can be found on the 4-H Foundation website at http://co4hfoundation.extension.colostate.edu/benefits/colorado-4-h-foundation-scholarships/. The deadline to submit application is April 1st.

Add/Drop Deadline

Members wishing to either add or drop a project have until April 14th to do so. All additions and drops must be done in writ-ing, on the appropriate form, and signed by both the member and their parent/legal guardian. Add/drop forms are availa-ble at the Extension Office. Remember, you must be enrolled in at least one project to maintain your 4-H membership, and to par-ticipate in 4-H activities.

New Southeast Area Website The Southeast Area Extension has a new website. Check out http://sea.extension.colostate.edu/ for Southeast Area related information.

4H Online – Email Blasts

From time to time the State office will be sending emails directly to the 4-H members. It is the easiest and most effective way to communicate important State events and requirements. We know that not everyone particularly enjoys the extra emails and there have been requests to be unsubscribed. It is important to know that if you do that, you would not receive any re-enrollment emails or information the County office sends directly to you. Please do not “unsubscribe.”

State Fair Exhibit Requirements

The 2017 State Fair Exhibit Requirements have been updated. You can find them at http://www.colorado4h.org/project_resources/StateFairExhibitReq.pdf. Please be sure to refer to the exhibit requirements when you are planning on your project, as this is what it will be judged on at both county and state fair.

Colorado State Fair Livestock Show Updates New for 2017, the market swine show will no longer be terminal. In other words, those swine that do NOT qualify for the junior livestock sale will be allowed to go home with the exhibitor. Retinal scanning will still be required for all market beef, market sheep, and market goats to be nominated for the show. Market swine will still turn in ear notches. There is a $5 fee per head for retinal scanning. You will be responsible for making arrangements with your extension agent to get your animals retinal scanned.

Meat Quality Assurance All 4-H members in breeding and market beef, sheep, swine, goats, poultry, rabbits, dairy animal and horse projects must complete Meat Quality Assurance training the first two years they show livestock, and then again when they change age divisions. You may attend any MQA in the area; be sure to sign in and complete the quiz so your county will know you attended. The hands-on learning stations will be used again with changes in the stations. This is a come and learn-by-doing training that will take approximately an hour to complete. Parents and leaders are strongly encouraged to attend. Plan to attend one of these sessions:
