From the PresidentHi Folks. The attendance of ninety plus members at our first General Meeting

bodes well for the VSCC in 2017. The atmosphere was friendly and there was a buzz of anticipation, generated by Bob Ilich’s Brabham BT21 on display in the meeting room. Initially the car was covered but, with theatrical style, the covers were removed by his son, Julian, as Bob was introduced to tell its story. Bob certainly had the full attention of his audience as he recounted anecdotes of his time working for Jack Brabham and how he found and restored the car. (See photos at the end of the minutes on page 6.)The meeting was also a special occasion because it was Trophy Night and the Chairman of

our Competition Committee, Paul Bartlett, presented the trophies for the 2016 competition year (see list of presentations on page 7).The events calendar for 2017 gets underway with the Collie Ice-Breaker on the 26th of

February (This isn’t a VSCC organized event but we urge members to support it. It is part of the State Historic and Regularity Championships). The Northam Flying Fifty is next on the weekend of April 1st and 2nd. Randle Beavis and

his team, supported by the VSCC, have been working hard to put the event together. It’s shaping up to be better than ever despite local damage caused by flooding. On the Saturday morning the Mount Ommanney Hill Climb will be the opening event, followed by the Minson Motorkana in the afternoon. The Flying Fifty will be run on Sunday.Planning for the Albany Classic is well underway. Our PR person, Vicki Clark, has her tasks

well in hand, as usual. The Albany group meets regularly and their planning is well advanced. The VSCC’s organization is ahead of schedule and we have placed an early request for favourable weather.I have said it before but it never ceases to amaze me when I see the number of hours of

work our volunteers put into running these events. To all those involved, I thank you. It’s a pleasure being part of it.On a sad note, I reluctantly accepted the resignation of our Treasurer, Rad Dickerson. Rad

took on the management of the Club’s finances during 2016. He and wife, Sue, carried out this difficult task with great efficiency and we thank them. Evan Edwards has stepped into the breach and will take on the position of Treasurer until the Annual General Meeting in November. We are now looking for a new Treasurer to take over from Evan at that time. If you are interested, contact me.I was looking through copies of the Vintage Metal going back a number of years and was

struck by the continuing improvement in the quality of the production and its content, particularly in recent years. Our editor, Bob Campbell, can take credit for this. He not only looks after design and printing but has encouraged more contributions from members to make the magazine more inclusive. Thank you, Bob.That’s me for this month. I hope to meet up with you at the Ice Breaker or at Northam. Drive safe.

Rob Ozanne

Remember! Deadline for articles and advertisements for the April issue is March 10.

Editor's RamblingsStanding RegulationsAs promised in the February issue, the middle eight pages

of this issue contain the Standing Regulations for 2017. You can either leave them where they are or extract them from the magazine and file them with your competition paperwork.Technology Gone MadEvery new car sold in Australia today has electronic

"driver aids" fitted that are required by law or necessary to achieve a good score in ANCAP testing. Can you imagine trying to convince your parents that they should buy a car based on how well it performs when crashed into a concrete wall at 40 mph (that's where the strange 64 km/h crash speed comes from in the ANCAP test)? They would have thought that you were mad! Some of the technology in cars is very odd when you think of how safety authorities

condemn mobile phone use when behind the wheel. Even the editor of Autocar magazine was moved to ask in his editorial in the September 21, 2016 issue: "Is in-car tech more trouble than it is worth?". He had recently used voice commands in a car equipped with AppleCarPlay to read a text message to him and he then dictated a response. He wondered whether that entirely legal process was diverting too much of his attention from the road?In Octane magazine last October Jay Leno expressed similar feelings of unease. He had

been driving his McLaren F1 and realised that one of the great things about the car was that it didn't have a radio! He felt that radios were only necessary in boring cars. Getting down to real basics, he pointed out that his Model T Ford has only one gauge, an ammeter!Unfortunately, I was unable to obtain permission to reproduce the Jay Leno article, but

found myself in sympathy with his frustration when it takes him a half-hour's study of the handbook to work out how to turn on the radio. And he has all sorts of trouble trying to reset the clock. Gone are the days when you could turn one knob to get the radio working and pull out a stalk next to the clock then turn it to set the clock hands. A clock with hands! How 1950s!In recent years my wife and I have arrived in Scotland for our holidays just before the

country moved to British Summer Time. Hire cars do not usually have handbooks in them, so I was never able to move the clock forward one hour. Last year our little Citroën C4 had a handbook in the glovebox, so I opened it to the appropriate page and followed the instructions to reset the clock...and zeroed the trip meter! This year we arrive just after BST starts, so Mr Hertz can reset the clock.News from Club MembersI have included news from Dad's Army in the magazine for some time, plus items from

Paul Bartlett in his capacity as Competition Secretary and this issue sees news from the J, K, L and Square Riggers group within the club (see page 27). If any other group can inveigle one of its members into supplying me with news items, it will help me to make the magazine more informative and keep members up to date about what's happening within the club. Please include photographs where appropriate (or inapproriate as long as they are printable and relevant).

Dad's Army Dates – 2017

Honour BoardsLen Kidd organised two beautifully presented Honour Boards for the club rooms, which

Dad's Army attached to the wall behind the committee table. The two boards each have three columns of names, although the sixth column on the right

hand board is still empty. From the left the columns are headed: President, Committee Secretary, Treasurer, Competition Secretary and, heading two columns, Life Members. All of the VSCC of WA Presidents from Jim

Harwood to Rob Ozanne, Secretaries from Neville Jones to David Moir and the Treasurers from Cristine Ferrucci to Rad Dickerson (the boards were completed before Rad's resignation, but can be updated) are listed. There are fewer Competition Secretaries as

the first, Diana Cowan, was not appointed until 1996, while the other offices were occupied from 1986. The two columns for Life Members so far contain 18 names, but there is space for more than twice that number.Caversham CarWork on the Caversham car has continued over

the summer, and the photograph on the right shows the boys moving in on the car. Kevin Dorn is about to mount the brake master cylinder, Denny Cunnold is jacking up the side of the car to finish the bottom edge of the body shell while Robin Ferguson-Stewart is ready to lend a hand where needed.Christmas in JulyThe real Christmas has barely gone by, but we

must plan for the Dad's Army Christmas in July function. If any Dad's Army member has an idea for the location of the function, please let Ron Fabry (9457 9179) know. We need an interesting place to go ― a private motor museum, historic car collection or the like ― with a suitable lunch venue within easy reach. Get your thinking caps on!

VSCC NewsGuest Speaker March 2017 MeetingThe guest speaker for the March meeting will be Steve Boyle, presenting and discussing his

Lancia Fulvia HF and Flaminia (see above). The Fulvia is a neat little coupe with front wheel drive and the Flaminia a much bigger car with front engine and rear drive. They share narrow angle V engines, V4 in the delicate little Fulvia and V6 in the substantial Flaminia.Ed Farrar DonationLen Kidd has said that the club must thank Ed Farrar for his donation to the VSCCWA

archives of a comprehensive collection of documents describing historic VSCC around the houses events and others from the formation of the VSCC of WA in 1986.Len is one of our club historians, sharing the job with John Napier-Winch. If any of you

have old documents pertaining to motor sport in WA, especially if you have nowhere to store them, contact Len or John (contact details on page 2) as they are both interested in building up the club archives.

Co-Driver Available for Phillip Island ClassicI would like to go to Phillip Island Classic meeting in March. I am looking for club

members who are going there, and with whom I could share accommodation. If you need a pit crew, I would be happy to do it, I have the proper background for that. Are you driving there? I can share the driving duty. I have a HR license as well. But unless you are desperate to lose weight, please don’t ask me to cook!

From the LibraryCOLIN CHAPMAN: WAYWARD GENIUS by Mike LawrenceBorn on the 19th of May, 1928 in Surrey, England,

Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman studied structural engineering at University College London, where he joined the University of London Air Squadron and learned to fly. After a brief stint in the RAF, Chapman graduated in 1949. Chapman founded Lotus, where he immediately set

about applying his cutting-edge knowledge of aeronautical engineering to the building of an entirely new type of sports car, the Mark VI. Previous cars built under the Lotus banner were largely based on donor vehicles, whereas the VI is considered to be the first proper Lotus-branded “production” car, a rather broad use of the term considering only 110 were ever made, factory-supplied in kit form.A mere ten years later, Lotus would win the

Formula One World Championship — in a decade, they’d made the leap from assembling inexpensive sports cars in a shed to triumph in the most challenging motorsport series on Earth.

Despite his deep-rooted demons, Chapman, through ambition, hard work, innovation, sacrifice, and an inexhaustible well of self-belief achieved more than most men will ever dream of. His contributions to road and race engineering have left deep impressions still felt more than 30 years after a fatal heart attack. His introduction of on-car advertising, for good and bad, brought about a tectonic shift in the fortunes and scale of international racing greater than any single mechanical breakthrough ever has or likely will allow.Team Lotus was one of the most successful outfits in motorsport during the 60s and 70s.

They won seven Formula One Constructor's Titles and six Driver's Championships. Lotus Cars still survives to this day producing cutting edge affordable sports cars and is regarded as one of the leading engineering consultancies in the motor industry. However, important as Chapman's technical legacy was, perhaps the most influential innovation was to bring sponsorship into motorsport- beginning the process that changed Formula One from a rich gentleman's pastime, to a multi-million pound high technology enterprise. Gold Leaf Team Lotus was the first team to carry tobacco logos, soon succeeded by a new brand: John Player Special. Following the path beaten by John Cooper and Cooper Cars, Colin Chapman created a business selling racing cars as well as the road going variety. Team Lotus ascended the ladder to Formula One and in 1960 Stirling Moss took the marque's first victory by winning the Monaco Grand Prix in the Rob Walker Lotus 18. Moss repeated the feat the following year.Mike Lawrence's biography of this remarkable man recalls his

Graham Hill and Chapman

23

achievements, but it also delves into the dark side of his genius. A frequent lack of concern for the safety of his drivers was not the end of his list of character flaws—drug abuse, plagiarism, industrial espionage, marital infidelity, and shady business dealings are part and parcel of his fascinating and complex story. The early years of Lotus, described in the book, are particularly interesting and Lawrence has unearthed a lot of worthwhile information from the individuals who helped Chapman make Lotus a

success. One interesting story relates to the invention of the ‘wobbly web’ cast alloy wheel. Chapman realised that tyres were lasting whole races and the need for quick knock off wire wheels was much lessened. Somehow he gained access to failed cast off Cooper wheels and did the usual Chapman engineering process of ‘look at the failure’ and work backwards to improve. Typically, as front man, Chapman claimed the invention as his rather than give credit to one of his engineers. Similarly, Chapman’s use of fibreglass for the beautiful Elite was based on the engineering of the 322cc Berkeley sports car (which outsold the Lotus two to one) he noticed at a motor show. It is said that the Chapman deal for having Elite bodies made by boat builder Maximar Mouldings lost Maximar several hundred pounds on each shell! Much of Lotus’ early success came from Chapman’s charismatic ability to attract gifted amateurs – often poorly or not paid. Lotus involvement and success at Indianapolis is examined in chapter 12: ‘A Bathtub on Wheels’ as is his increasing involvement of Ford for his race and road cars. Once again Chapman’s analysis of what was accepted traditional practice and how it could be improved with the combined benefits of reduced weight, less fuel use and lighter and better developed motors other than the traditional Offenhauser, brought new technology and race winning ability to Lotus at Indianapolis.Chapman's triumphs in the 1960s and 1970s have never been equalled: world

championships in Formula 1, a succession of grand prix victories and triumph at the Indianapolis 500. He also formed famous partnerships with exceptional drivers like Graham Hill (originally one of his mechanics), Jim Clark, Jochen Rindt, Emerson Fittipaldi, Ronnie Peterson, Nigel Mansell and Mario Andretti. The Lotus single seaters that brought them such success, the 25, the 49, the 72 and the 79 are now regarded as milestones in the evolution of the racing car. Yet Chapman's abrasive character, drive for success and unorthodox business methods

clouded his reputation. Author Mike Lawrence looks in detail at this aspect of Chapman's history and gives a revealing account of the tangled financial arrangements that kept Chapman, and Lotus, afloat. He shows, too, how Chapman operated in a fast moving, highly pressurised world of international racing and car making that generated huge rewards and temptations. The crunch came when he became involved with John Delorean, the American entrepreneur who found the ill-fated Delorean car company (that’s another very involved story in itself!). It is apparent that, if he had not died from a heart attack, Chapman would have served time for fraud. In summary, Colin Chapman was the most charismatic and brilliant engineer in the history of

motor racing. His innovative designs revolutionised the layout of the grand prix car. He played a key role in the establishment of the British motor racing industry which is a world force. Through his Lotus company he not only dominated Formula 1 racing but also made an extraordinary contribution to the development of the sportscar with the Elite and the Elan.Another absorbing read from your VSCCWA library!

Book Review:CAMS ― The Official History

This beautifully presented book was published to celebrate 60 years of CAMS, 1953 to 2013.It doesn't seem long but, as this book

explains, motor sport in Australia was governed by the state auto clubs until 1953.In 1952 the auto clubs and their

national body, the Australian Automobile Association, eased themselves out of motor sports control and the motor sports clubs had to come up with a new controlling body ― fast. The CAMS constitution (and the

name) were put together in a matter of weeks and the whole agreed to by the states. With a paid up capital of £120 (£20 from each state), CAMS was ready to go.Australia's representation to the

world body, the FIA, was through the RAC in the UK, which caused problems from the start. The book tells how Australia achieved "independence" from the mother country and how what had started as

a confederation of motor sports clubs coped with the rapid development of motor sport from a largely amateur sport to the big business it is today.Along the way it describes three "CAMS Wars", the first connected with promotion of

round Australia trials, the others triggered by CAMS' inflexible attitude to the rules. There are also chapters describing the presidents, administrators, the various categories of motor sport plus the events, circuits and rally stages. This is a comprehensive history of the national ruling body and every club member should really read it before getting into arguments over the role played by CAMS at a local or national level.Other chapters cover the internationalisation (yes, that really is a word) of motor sport, the

business of motor racing, government and governance, the development of CAMS and AIMSS (the Australian Institute for Motor Sport Safety). Profiles of leading volunteer administrators, profiles 20 of Australia's great national champions and profiles of 20 offshore contenders and champions. This great book is available from the CAMS shop, camsshop.shopdesq.com, For $99.00

($82.50 for CAMS licence holders) plus $15.00 post and packing.

JK&L Square Riggers UpdateWe must get a good name for the pre-war group of J, K & L square riggers, especially as

numbers are on the rise!Hugh Fryer reports that we could have more

than 20 entries for this group at Northam — and that will be great to see.Ian Fry’s single-seater and (according to

Kevin McMahon) Ed Float’s MG TC could both be ready for combat. Hopes are high that the group will be

well-supported at Northam and Albany and as the entry numbers grow, more members will be encouraged to get their cars back on the trackA year or two ago, Ron Fabry came up with

a list approaching 100 pre-war cars which would be eligible for our around-the-houses events. There’s great potential to get these cars involved in the club again. These are cars that exist in Western Australia

thanks to the VSCC. A look at early York Flying 50 programmes from the 1980s show that there weren’t particularly large numbers of pre-war cars competing in the events and they were mingled with more modern chariots such as XK120s.Many of those cars came from the York

Motor Museum collection and were loaned out to drivers at the events.

It shows how far we have come that now we can put on a show with such a fine array of cars.See you at NorthamHeza Henry
