First Super BowlThe first Super Bowl, January 15, 1967,

featured the Green Bay Packers and the KansasCity Chiefs in L.A. The Packers won 35-10.

Strength and AgingIt’s true...if you don’t use it, you

lose it! Muscle weakness contributesto fatigue, reduced activity, balanceproblems, joint pain, falls andfractures, some forms of depressionand overall decline in health andwell-being. For the averageAmerican, muscle performancedecreases five percent every ten yearsafter the age of 40. Weakness occursfrom both loss of muscle mass and adecline in coordination between thenerves and muscles.

A strength training program canbuild muscle mass no matter howold you are and will improve yourability to get up from a chair, off thefloor, in and out of the car, as well asmaintain hobbies and enjoyableactivities. A strength training

program will help you attain betterbalance and confidence in gettingaround the community and maintainyour level of independence.

When exercising to build muscletissue and gain strength, knowing howhard to push yourself and how muchto rest is important. As we age, thebody needs more time to build muscleand recover from exercise. Programsshould be progressive, individualizedand preceded by medical approval.Having a therapist assist you indeveloping a strengthening programcan help you avoid injury and get thebest outcomes.
