NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

As an editor of the Rumbleseat Review there are times when I can not make it to a club event. This is a drawback to having photos taken for the newsletter and our web site. I would like to thank Mike James for volunteering to help take pictures for the newsletter and web site. He does an excellent job and I really appreci-ate all he has to offer our club. AIR MAIL ARROWS TOUR

April 9, 2016

On Saturday April 9th we will meet at the McDonalds at Kellogg and Dugan so we can leave at 8:00 a.m. This tour will cover about 100 miles with a few miles on good sandy roads. We will see con-crete arrows that were placed in the 1920’s for Air Mail pilots to follow because they had no radio technology to guide them. The arrows were paint-ed yellow and there were towers with lights to make them visible. This is a pretty cool piece of history, even if it was short lived. To think of those early postal pilots navigating like this from coast to coast is mind boggling. You will be on your own for lunch in Wellington. A rain date will be in the fall. We hope to see you. If you have any questions please call Gilbert or Joanna ……….... A signup sheet will be at the meeting.

Model A Winter Trip to Tallahassee, FL

All Wichita A’s club members were invited to take a winter trip to Florida with the Kibbes. The club members who went on the vacation con-sisted of James & Judi Sharp, Bob & Barb Phye, Alan & Sheila Orr, Lonnie & Arley Bennett, Gary & Norma Agard and Richard & Linda Kibbe.

On Friday, February 26, 2016 we left for Tallahassee, FL. As we were preparing to leave the next morning from Van Buren, AR, Bob Phye determined that the miss in his engine was not going to heal, nor was it re-

pairable on the road. They made the decision to return home and canceled their trip. Some of us toured the Clinton Presidential Center and others chose to ride the trolley in downtown Little Rock, AR. The next day we drove across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, the start of the Civil Rights Selma-To-Montgomery March, in Selma, AL and visited the Lowndes County Interpretive Center, on

route to Montgomery, AL. While we were in Talla-hassee, FL, we visited Florida’s Apalachee-Spanish Living His-tory Museum at the Mission San Louis The site depicts the histo-ry of Florida in 1703 where the Apalachee Indians and the peo-ple of Spain lived together. The next morning, we were given a tour of the Governor’s Mansion. After the tour we divided in two groups while one group visited the Museum of Florida History the other was given a driving tour of all things to see in Tallahas-see. Then the groups swapped places. After the tour the Sharps ventured

on to Bradley’s Country Store, north east of Tallahassee, to enjoy a late lunch of homemade sausage, etc. The store specializes in making and shipping sausage.

The next day we attempted to find the lighthouse at Bald Point State Park and failed. We took pictures of each other by the Gulf of Mexico. A few of us ventured out for a walk on the white sand beach in Destin, Fl. The next morn-ing, we toured the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pensacola, FL.

While driving to our destination Laurel, MS from Destin, FL, the Kibbes sideswiped a mailbox in AL. The accident was caused by the driver eating a high carbohydrate lunch, navigator playing Pet Rescue on the IPad. The driver took a 3 second nap. The navigator looked up just in time to see the Model A heading toward the mailbox and called out to the driver. The minor roadside repairs consisted of:

1. Removing the remains of the right rear fender. 2. Reattaching the exhaust pipe. 3. Picking up the destroyed running board on the road. 4. Changing Alan Orr’s flat tire caused by a nail from the destroyed mailbox. 5. Paying the owner for the mailbox. We were very thankful, with the assistance of the mailbox owner, neighbors and our travelers, who worked on

the car, to make it road worthy again.

Richard and I would like to thank everyone for their help on our car . It would not have been an easy fix

without you guys. I would like to thank Alan and Sheila Orr for leading us on the trip home. They did a great job as a leader. When we arrived home, 2260.02 miles was logged on our GPS. We had a great trip. We had great weather con-sisting of warm temperatures, no rain and no floods. The Kibbes now have only two states to drive through to finish their goal of a Model A driven in all the lower 48 states. The last couple of states, Minnesota and North Dakota will be covered on a future trip.

Normally you wouldn’t have any reason to paint an interior engine component. Oily substance is everywhere and bare metal will not rust in this environment. The lower distributor shaft and collar that joins it to the distributor are an exception. The cavity that this shaft rides in is absent of oil and very prone to condensation. On long runs the conden-sation may burn out but on short runs that so many of these cars are subject to the cavity contains moisture most of the time. The shaft shown on the left is a new plain steel shaft. The rusty shaft in the middle had blue plating similar to a gun. This shaft rusted in less that two years and I have seen some that were terribly rusted when they had served a longer time period. The shaft on the right has been used for almost 20 years and shows no rust. I always add a coat of paint from a fu-fu can when I have the shaft out. I don’t know if high heat paint is necessary but I usually have a can of Krylon 1614 high heat black around so that is what I use. The standard green engine paint would also work. RG

On the afternoon of March 15th, Dennis was doing his monthly maintenance procedures on 2 of his Mustangs in secondary garages on his property on Santa Fe Street. He reg-ularly starts and runs all of his vehicles at least once a month and this particular day he charged the battery and started his 84 Mustang Cobra Conversion that he had purchased new. This car has about 30,000 original miles and is equipped with a 4 barrel carburetor. He started the car and left it to run for awhile to warm up. The hood was open and he was nearby when large flames erupted in the engine compartment. He grabbed a fire extinguisher, which he said was about as effective as a squirt bottle. He wasn't able to get a garden hose hooked up so he called 911. In the meantime the fire was spreading rapidly

through the whole structure and includes a restored 69 Mus-tang Fastback that belongs to his son Darren. He had tools, and a lot of lumber stored in the building which probably fueled the flames much more. The Fire Department arrived and proceeded to extin-guish the flames. Electric Power was disabled as the service line to the house was in the path of the flames. The next day, today, Dennis is running on generator power that an Electric Company attached. He is waiting on his insurance company to respond with inspectors & etc. One thing for sure both cars are a total loss. Dennis also has a much larger gar age on the other side of his property which includes more collector cars includ-ing his Model A Coupe. RG

DENNIS ANDERSON HAS DISASTRIOUS FIRE

84 Mustang was in the left stall and the 69 on the right. Rear bumper was warped by the intense heat on the rear bumper of the Retro T-Bird about 30' away from the fire.

The fire started in this stall with the 84 model running and the hood up. 69 Mustang can be seen amongst the rubble.
