MARCH 2013 10 Charles st, Newport, np20 1ju 01633 259661 Diverse Records presents the classic Daniel Lanois debut LP “Acadie”. Available on vinyl for the first time since 1989, for Record Store Day 2013. Lanois started his production career when he was 17, working in his own studio with his brother Bob Lanois in the basement of their mother’s Ancaster, Ontario home, recording local artists. Within ten years his production talents saw him working with Brian Eno (Ambient 4), and onto classic albums by U2 (The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree), Peter Gabriel (Birdy, So) and Bob Dylan (Oh Mercy). Inspired by a move from Canada to New Orleans, and sublime recording sessions with the Neville Brothers (Yellow Moon) and Dylan, Daniel’s debut album as a recording artist was released in 1989. “Acadie” is a stunning blend of styles, fusing Cajun, rhythm and blues, rock and new age ambience, taking influence from many of Lanois’ recent production works. Most noticeably among those are Peter Gabriel’s So and Robbie Robertson, but also the Neville Brothers and U2, members of whom appear in the stellar line up of musicians here. This deluxe redesigned reissue includes the classic album and seven unreleased gems from the vault – one exclusive to this vinyl version. Remastered from the original tapes. A new expanded sleeve design featuring exclusive photographs, artwork, and all of the lyrics along with annotations by Daniel. DEPECHE MODE “DELTA MACHINE” Depeche Mode have announced they will release their highly anticipated 13th studio album, entitled Delta Machine, on March 26th worldwide via Columbia Records. The album, recorded over the last year in Santa Barbara, California and New York City, was produced by Ben Hillier and mixed by Flood. Martin Gore said of the release, “Writing this album was incredibly daunting as I wanted the sound of this collection to be very modern. I want people to feel good about listening to this record, to get some kind of peace. It’s just got something magical about it.” Dave Gahan added, “With this release we’ve completely shifted our idea of how to create an album. When we hit a wall where we realize the album is beginning to sound too normal, we’ll mess it up and really give it that organic Depeche Mode Sound. Delta Machine is no different, and I can’t wait for all of our fans to hear it.” STEREOPHONICS “GRAFFITI ON THE TRAIN” Stereophonics return with their eighth studio album. After rolling out a taster in the acclaimed ‘Violins and Tambourines’ - “a broody string-strewn ‘Spanish Sahara’-esque Bond-voyage” according to Drowned in Sound - now they’re ready to release this new 10-track LP. Written by Kelly Jones, it’s the final piece in the puzzle for a newly refined and cinematic Stereophonics, a band who have already had the Sunday Times Culture calling this album their “least conventional yet”, praising its “newfound lightness of touch”. The album also sees the band collaborate with David Arnold who arranged strings on several tracks. A storyteller first and foremost, Kelly Jones unravels storylines and sketches characters with poetic finesse.

2013 marks the official return of Brit-pop legends SUEDE. Fronted by the ever enigmatic Brett Anderson, their new studio album (and their first since 2002) BLOODSPORTS is due March 2013 and will be preceded by a fantastic new single ‘It Starts And Ends With You’. NME and Q Magazine recently visited the studio for a preview of the new material with NME proclaiming: “Suede seem brighter, fuller and more energized than they have in a long time”. Brett Anderson said: “After a year of sweating and bleeding over the record it's finally finished so we wanted to get some music out there as

soon as we could. ‘Barriers’ isn't the first single but we are proud of it enough just to chuck it out there and thought that it's pulsing, romantic swell somehow summed up the feel of the album quite nicely . The album is called Bloodsports. It's about lust, it's about the chase, it's about the endless carnal game of love. It was possibly the hardest we've ever made but certainly the most satisfying. It's ten furious songs for me have reclaimed from ourselves what Suede was always about; drama, melody and noise. ”

MY BLOODY VALENTINE “m b v” Even though My Bloody Valentine promised late in 2012 that they would release new music in the near future, when m b v arrived in the middle of a February weekend in 2013, it was hard to believe it actually existed -- and not just because demand for the album kept crashing the band's website. For years, a follow-up to their 1991 masterpiece Loveless seemed impossible, and perhaps even unnecessary. What could live up to Kevin Shields' notorious perfectionism, never mind the expectations of rabid fans (some of whom weren't even alive when Loveless was released)? With a title that evoked years of scrawling initials on mixtapes and playlists, m b v answered those worries with a set of songs that felt immediately familiar. And, appropriately enough given the 22-year wait, many of these tracks are decidedly unhurried, and maybe even hazier than what came before. More comforting than revelatory, m b v reaffirms that My Bloody Valentine are one of a kind; the subtlety to their melodies, instrumentation, and the way they blur together belongs to them alone.

Billy Bragg releases his first new studio album in five years Tooth & Nail on March 18 2013.

Tooth & Nail was recorded over a whirlwind five-day session with Grammy Award winning producer Joe Henry (whose impeccable production credits include Solomon Burke, Aimee Mann, Elvis Costello and Allen Toussaint) in his South Pasadena studio. Working with a small band of musicians whose talents had recently appeared on records by the likes of Bon

Iver, Lana del Rey and Regina Spektor, the performances have a wonderfully spontaneous feel. The results are, according to Billy, a return to the rootsy sound of 1998’s Mermaid Avenue sessions he recorded with Wilco - drawing on soul, country and folk music influences to explore the ups and downs of relationships that have stood the test of time. "In 2011, I took a long, hard look at who I am and what I do. This album is the result."

THE STROKES “COMEDOWN MACHINE” The Strokes are to release their highly anticipated fifth studio album ‘Comedown Machine’ via Rough Trade Records. The New York band have released four studio albums, ‘Is This It’ (2001), ‘Room On Fire’ (2003), ‘First Impressions Of Earth’ (2006) and ‘Angles’ (2011), which have sold over 5 million albums worldwide. Discussing the recording of ‘Comedown Machine’, bassist Nikolai Fraiture said: “We got off tour and we had these songs, some left over and some new. We rehearsed in Electric Lady and it was working so we went with it. It was touch and go for a while but we finished up at Electric Lady (recording studio) in New York. We recorded ten or 11 songs and there is other stuff floating around.” He added: “We hashed it out all together like the good old days. It’s a legendary studio and it is not far away from us all, apart from Nick who lives in Los Angeles, but he made the trip out to record.” The LP format includes a copy of the album on CD.

BRMC announce the release of their highly anticipated seventh album ‘Specter At The Feast’, released through Abstract Dragon Records on the 18th March. Following 2010’s ‘Beat The Devil’s Tattoo’, the forthcoming release is the latest addition to their acclaimed discography, which began with their seminal debut ‘B.R.M.C’ in 2001. The notoriously mysterious trio remain true to their sonic template – fuzzy guitars, blues licks, atmospheric feedback – yet drew inspiration from a very different place for this new release. In August 2010, the band unexpectedly and tragically lost someone they often referred to as their fourth member, Michael Been, also bassist Robert Been’s father. After taking some time off BRMC returned to their roots, their love of making music, and recalled their very first album as a reference. They recorded the majority of the album at Dave Grohl’s studio in LA on the same console that is featured in Grohl’s upcoming ‘Sound City: The Movie’ documentary (also the same board they recorded their debut album on). Additional recording was done in Joshua Tree, CA at the infamous Rancho De La Luna Studio before they ventured to Robert Been’s hometown of Santa Cruz, CA to record the rest of the album – the very same place they recorded their unanimously praised self-titled debut LP.

MICK HARVEY “FOUR (Acts Of Love)” Former member of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds & PJ Harvey collaborator, Mick Harvey has announced details of a new solo album, FOUR (Acts of Love), out on Mute on 29 April 2013. FOUR (Acts of Love) is a contemplation on romantic love - its loss, re-awakening, its tumultuous struggle and its place in our universe. The album is a song cycle, divided into 3 Acts. The album features original compositions by Mick Harvey alongside a song by long time collaborator PJ Harvey (‘Glorious’) and interpretations of The Saints’ ‘The Story of Love’, Van Morrison’s ‘The Way Young Lovers Do’, Exuma’s ‘Summertime in New York’ and Roy Orbison’s ‘Wild Hearts (Run Out of Time)’.

A Hawk and A Hacksaw, the duo of Jeremy Barnes and Heather Trost, known for performing traditional and original music steeped in Eastern European folk traditions, present their sixth album You Have Already Gone to the Other World: Music Inspired by Paradjanov’s Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors. The sixteen tracks feature seven originals along with nine Ukrainian, Hungarian and Romanian traditional songs re-imagined and arranged with inspiration taken from the legendary 1964 film Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors by Russian filmmaker Sergey Paradjanov.

Another month and another new signing on 4AD to report! Daughter are a London-based trio consisting of Elena Tonra (vocals, guitar), Igor Haefeli (guitar) and Remi Aguilella (percussion). ‘If You Leave’ is Daughter’s debut album. Recorded over a period of months at home and in various spaces around London, it was produced by Igor with additional production from Rodhaidh McDonald (The xx, Adele) and Jolyon Vaughan Thomas, and mixed by Ken Thomas (Sigur Ros, M83) at High Bank Studios. Less of a statement of intent, these songs are more a snapshot of a year in Daughter’s short life. Lyrically, Elena plumbs the depths of her psyche to reveal her innermost thoughts, finding catharsis in expounding those internal demons. There may be little light relief here, but the personal themes have universal appeal; tales of doubt, insecurity, fear, anger and loneliness all take centre stage. Musically, Daughter balance an intricate interplay between vocal, guitar and rhythm section. Elena’s vocals are fractured, often delivering savage words with a smoke-tinged whisper. Igor wrestles his guitar to build up a stark and brutal landscape, colliding with Elena’s more structured rhythm guitar. All are punctuated by the jolts of Remi’s minimalist drums. ‘If You Leave’ is a bold first move for an act still in its infancy, and yet the songwriting displays a maturity that belies their youth. Darkness may prevail on ‘If You Leave’, but the future looks extremely bright for Elena, Igor and Remi. LP format includes a copy of the album on CD.

THE FLAMING LIPS and Bella Union records are pleased to announce the long-awaited release of The Terror, the band's thirteenth studio album, on April 1st 2013. As per usual, the album was produced by long-time collaborator Dave Fridmann and THE FLAMING LIPS at Tarbox Road Studios. The album is comprised of nine original compositions that reflect a darker-hued spectrum than previous works along with a more inward-looking lyrical perspective than one might expect - but then again, maybe not. It’s up to you, the listener, to decide what it means to you. Wayne Coyne explains, “Why would we make this music that is The Terror – this bleak, disturbing record…?? I don't really want to know the answer that I think is coming: that WE were hopeless, WE were disturbed and, I think, accepting that some things are hopeless... or letting hope in one area die so that hope can start to live in another?? Maybe this is the beginning of the answer.” The Terror is a bold and expressive journey that has evolved over THE LIPS’ nearly 30 year tended garden of sonic delights that ebbs and flows with extraordinary splashes of darkness and light, pleasure and pain, chaos and order. As we’ve come to know THE FLAMING LIPS, the real beauty lies with the knowledge that to expect the unexpected is all part of the manic fun. “We want, or wanted, to believe that without love we would disappear”, Coyne continues, “that love, somehow, would save us that, yeah, if we have love, give love and know love, we are truly alive and if there is no love, there would be no life. The Terror is, we know now, that even without love, life goes on... we just go on… there is no mercy killing.”

British Sea Power’s new, fifth album ‘Machineries Of Joy’ will be released on Rough Trade Records. ‘Machineries Of Joy’ was written in the Berwyn mountains in north Wales and recorded in Brighton with Dan Smith and mixer Ken Thomas (David Bowie, Sigur Ros). “We’d like to think the album is warm and restorative,” says singer Yan. “Various things are touched on in the words - Franciscan monks, ketamine, French female bodybuilders turned erotic movie stars. The world often seems a mad, hysterical place at the moment. You can’t really be oblivious to that, but we’d like the record to be an antidote - a nice game of cards in pleasant company.” The LP format includes a copy of the album on CD.

American slowcore trio Low release their tenth album in 20 years. They recorded The Invisible Way at Wilco’s Chicago studio The Loft and Wilco singer Jeff Tweedy produced the album. It was during the initial visit there that Low heard the work Tweedy was doing on Mavis Staples' record, and they planned The Invisible Way there and then. Vocal duties are shared on this release, with Mimi Parker singing on five of the eleven tracks -- more than she has on any of their previous albums.

April 2013 marks the 25th anniversary of both Mudhoney and Sub Pop Records, and there could be no better band to represent the label, past, present and future. No other group has consistently kicked as much ass as Mudhoney, nor has anyone come close. Through two and a half decades, sarcastic grins remain implanted on their grizzled faces, even as empty bottles and the sneakers of a stage diver fly inches from their heads. Along with this milestone celebration, Mudhoney have bestowed Vanishing Point upon us, their ninth studio album, a truly remarkable feat for any band, but almost statistically impossible in their case, as we are talking about a band whose 1988 debut Touch Me I’m Sick was such a volatile and desperate single that it’s miraculous the band made it through a weekend, let alone another year. In an age where only the newest of the new can survive (and even then, only for a few weeks at best), what could the decades-old Mudhoney have to offer? What could they possibly have left to say? The answer is plenty. Vanishing Point is full of that fervour —these are songs written from the rare vantage point of a band who went through the rock ‘n’ roll meat grinder and not only lived to tell such a tale, they came out full of the wisdom and dark humour such a journey provides.

NUTTY SLACK’S AMERICANA & COUNTRY ROCK REVIEW SON VOLT “HONKY TONK” From his earliest recordings in the 1990s as a founding member of Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar has been a keen observer of the American landscape: Its beauties and its tragedies, salvations and poisons. His two-decades of touring and travel as the leader of Son Volt as well as a solo artist have deepened and sharpened his gift for capturing the sights and sounds of his American journey — a gift which is in evidence once again on Son Volt's sixth studio album: Honky Tonk. Excavating, distilling and reimagining the classic honky tonk sound of Bakersfield (along with the influence of Tennessee and Texas), the music on this album is about heartache, but there's also optimism and perseverance. Pedal steel guitar and twin fiddles anchor a timeless music, in which the clear hard truths of the lyrics mine the emotional complexities of life and love, making Honky Tonk a landmark on a continuing journey.

CAITLIN ROSE “THE STAND-IN” If you fell in love with Nashville’s Caitlin Rose and her garlanded 2010 debut album, ‘Own Side Now’, you were in good company. Led by her golden nectar voice, an irrepressible personality matched with a gift for emotionally direct song-writing, and deliciously melodic country sounds, Caitlin Rose beguiled and flat-out, jaw-droppingly impressed wherever she turned. ‘The Stand-In’ is Caitlin Rose unabashedly stating her case for being at the very forefront of the burgeoning ‘New Nashville’. There’s also the small matter of Rose’s song-writing collaboration with Gary Louris (The Jayhawks), on two songs. “Gary and I got on like bandits,” she grins. “Collaboration is supposed to be fun, if it's not you should just stick to writing by yourself. It often brings out the best in me, though.”

DEADSTRING BROS. “CANNERY ROW” In 2010, the Deadstring Brothers did a reverse of the great Southern Migration, decamping from hometown Detroit and moving to Nashville. And while you can never, ever take all the Detroit out of a Detroiter, Cannery Row has a loose-limbed melancholy reminiscent of the Laurel Canyon folk scene, the outlaw Nashville days and the Upstate NY counterculture spirit of the Band. Like a hitchhiker with a dirty backpack, a well-worn leather hat, a beat up guitar case and a wistful distant smile, the Brothers have piled up stories like the highway miles and created something pretty damn close to that old G. Parsons dream of Cosmic American Music.

JASON ISBELL & THE 400 UNIT “LIVE FROM ALABAMA” The first full-length live album from Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit, is now available on a double LP (with download code). The live set comes on the heels of receiving the award for Song Of The Year at the 2012 Americana Music Awards for his song "Alabama Pines." The song comes from the group's the highly acclaimed 2011 release, Here We Rest, which received three other Award nominations. Live From Alabama was recorded in Isbell's home state during a couple of sold out shows in August 2012 at the WorkPlay Theater in Birmingham, AL and Crossroads in Huntsville, AL. The album's set list showcases the diversity of styles the band can ease into and the versatility and skill of their musicianship. Add in the passion and sheer intensity of their performances, plus a three-piece horn section, and you have an album that captures a band in their true element at their prime.

CHATHAM COUNTY LINE “THE SPEED OF THE WHIPPOORWILL” Why the label took so long to realise that the excellent CCL back catalogue was practically “made” for vinyl, we’ll never know. We can however now pick up these superb releases on LP as they become available, and this month Yep Roc have gone back as far as their fantastic 2006 album “The Speed Of The Whippoorwill”. Featuring ten new Dave Wilson originals, a co-write between him and mandonlinist John Teer, a Teer original, and one by banjoist Chandler Holt, along with a cover of Don Robertson, the formula isn't all that different -- most of this is contemporary bluegrass that could have been recorded in the heyday of the Stanley Brothers or Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys. Speed of the Whippoorwill is more sophisticated, however, mostly in the lyrics of Wilson, who employs humour along with heartbreak in his songs.

CAPITOL ANNOUNCE “NASHVILLE” SERIES FROM THE VAULTS Capitol Records “Capitol Vaults” series has been an incredibly successful reissue campaign, taking in classic after classic from the phenomenal back catalogue on Capitol – EMI’s US counterparts. From Sinatra through to Beach Boys, from Roxy Music to Radiohead, the label has brought a wealth of important titles back into the racks. This month we’re been delighted to learn that the label’s country music imprint “Capitol Nashville” have joined in with the reissues. The first four titles to arrive so far are:

GLEN CAMPBELL “BY THE TIME I GET TO PHEONIX” Released in 1968 this album saw Glen Campbell break into the mainstream with the title track 'By The Time I Get To Phoenix'. The album features covers of Paul Simon's "Homeward Bound" a rendition of Ernest Tubb's "Tomorrow Never Comes"and "Cold December in Your Heart" is a beautiful country-pop song.

KENNY ROGERS “THE GAMBLER” Released in 1979, 'The Gambler' was one of Kenny Rogers's best selling albums. Ironically Kenny was taking something of a gamble himself, as releasing a “concept” album wasn’t really something to be expected from a country star, but he title track and "She Believes In Me" became big pop-crossover hits.

MERLE HAGGARD “SWINGING DOORS” Oklahoma's Merle Haggard specialises in selling heartache & misery with honkytonk subjects of prison, poverty, sobriety, and doomed romance. 'Swinging Doors' his third studio album was released in 1966. It hit #1 on Billboard’s Country Albums chart and Haggard earned the year’s Top Male Vocalist award from the Academy of Country Music.

WANDA JACKSON “ROCKIN’ WITH WANDA” Released in 1960, Oklahoma's Wanda Jackson 'Rockin’ With Wanda!' is still considered to be the finest collection of the Queen of Rockabilly’s signature singles from the mid to late 1950s, including Jackson’s inviting, high-energy take on “Let’s Have a Party,” and “I Gotta Know”. 'Rockin' With Wanda' is regarded as one of the best female rock & roll albums ever.

MORE BACK TO BLACK CLASSICS ON THE WAY Back To Black have announced a bunch of excellent new titles for reissue later this month. There’s more on that in the Archaeology section, but here’s a particularly exciting classic Americana title I just had to single out:

NEIL YOUNG “OLD WAYS” Neil’s “country album” was originally rejected in 1982 by Geffen Records, and subsequently lead to a milestone court case where the label complained that his recent output had been too experimental and very un-Neil Young. Old Ways finally secured a release date three years later in 1985 but in a somewhat altered form. Young was dedicated to the album and spent the best part of 1984 and ’85 touring it with his country band, International Harvesters. Produced by longtime collaborator, David Briggs, Old Ways finds Young paying homage to his country routes and contains stand out tracks, “Get Back To The Country”, “Bound For Glory” and “The Wayward Wind”. Also features contributions from Waylon Jennings on 6 of the 10 songs and a duet with Willie Nelson on “Are There Anymore Real Cowboys ?”.

Also worthy of a mention here are: COUNTING CROWS “AUGUST & EVERYTHING AFTER” Needing no introduction at all! Finally, we’re able to offer a 33RPM version of this classic slice of Americana to compliment the phenomenal Analogue Productions reissue!

ELLIOTT SMITH “FIGURE 8” Despite the fact that by the year 2000 Smith was in a dark place, “Figure 8” is a really uplifting album. Partially recorded at Abbey Road studios and heavily influenced by The Beatles, the album is considered by many as being sonic perfection due to its “sweeping kaleidoscope of layered instruments and sonic textures”.

Some B2B titles have been (or are still) available on other reissue labels, but these have the added bonus of a download code to take your sounds on the move!

DIVERSE ARCHAEOLOGY: Digging Up Vinyl Gems From The Past…

THE BEATLES “THE DECCA TAPES” “Guitar groups are on their way out”, was what the biggest fool in rock & roll history wrote to Brian Epstein when he REJECTED the Beatles’ after listening to this audition tape, recorded at Decca Studios on New Year’s Day, 1962. Although the boys (with Pete Best on drums) were admittedly still finding their footing here, and the three Lennon-McCartney originals may be no match for “Love Me Do” (recorded just 10 months later), these 15 songs still have all the makings of a band whose stardom would soon obscure the sun. This pop music archive comes with a bonus CD, on the Doxy label.

FRED NEIL ON 4MWB Three absolutely essential releases by legendary songwriter Fred Neil will be back in the racks shortly, thanks to the Four Men With Beards label. Fred Neil's 1966 debut contains some of his best known (and most covered) songs including "Dolphins," "That's The Bag I'm In," and the future theme song to the 1969 blockbuster film "Midnight Cowboy" (and Harry Nilsson hit) "Everybody's Talkin'." Absolutely stunning folk-blues from a Greenwich Village master. Released in 1967, Sessions is the follow-up to his classic self-titled solo album. Although the long, meandering, raga influenced songs on Sessions are a bit perplexing at first, the album’s rewards increase with each subsequent listening session. Neil’s vocal performances are astounding and the album as a whole is a meditative experience. An under-rated LP from one of American folk’s finest voices. Other Side of This Life is the final album from American folk music legend Fred Neil, released in 1971 before his long self-imposed retirement from music to focus on dolphin conservation in his home state of Florida. Featuring a side of live recordings of some of his most lasting and well known compositions (including “The Dolphins”, and “Everybody’s Talkin’”) as well as a side of studio sessions featuring Les McCann and Gram Parsons, Other Side of This Life may not be Neil’s most memorable album but it’s still head and shoulders above most other singer-songwriter material of the era.

JEFF BECK “TRUTH” AND BECK-OLA” The Jeff Beck Group, consisted of former Yardbirds guitarist Jeff Beck, singer Rod Stewart, bassist Ronnie Wood, as well as Keyboardist Nicky Hopkins and eventually, drummer Micky Waller. The debut album from Jeff Beck group, originally released in 1968, was an influential and ground breaking album released on EMI Columbia in the UK. Here the album “Truth” is reissued on 180 gram heavyweight vinyl cut from original analogue tapes, and features “Shapes Of Things”, a re-worked Yardbirds song (Becks previous band), as well as a version of Willie Dixon’s “You Shook Me”. Originally released in 1969, “Beck-Ola” is the second album from the late 60’s British blues rockers, and features two Elvis Presley covers, “All Shook Up”, and “Jailhouse Rock”, as well as original band written songs. We welcome these very popular albums back in the catalogue; released via EMI in late May.

BEACH BOYS “SURFIN SAFARI” We’re always pleased to see Beach Boys titles in racks, who wouldn’t be! Peaking at number 32 on the album charts, Surfin’ Safari was the Beach Boys’ 1962 debut LP. The original 12-song track list, found here on side A, features the band’s first two singles—“Surfin’” and “Surfin’ Safari”, while side B is made up primarily of rare outtakes from their 1961-62 Candix studio sessions. The two tracks, "Barbie" and "What Is a Young Girl Made Of?" were actually issued as a single in early 1962 under the name of Kenny & The Cadets, and feature a 20-year-old Brian Wilson on lead vocals. This new Doxy pressing comes with a CD of the album too!

FRANK ZAPPA “FINER MOMENTS” It’s criminal how few Zappa reissues there have been on vinyl, hopefully this is the start of a campaign that’ll see Frank & The Mothers back in the racks in decent numbers, time will tell! Finer Moments is the recording, intended for vinyl, that was found in the vault exactly as Frank Zappa left it in 1973. You could say it's a prequel to the series, You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore launched 15 years later. Finer Moments is probably about getting very close to the edge of perfection in terms of performance - hitting the correct notes, correctly.

MORE BACK TO BLACK TITLES ON THE WAY…. …and there’s some gems among them! Mr Slack has undoubtedly already whetted your appetite with Neil Young “Old Ways”, Counting Crows and Elliott Smith, but also announced are:

Mamas And The Papas “If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears” The Mamas and The Papas signature sound was based on a four-part male/female vocal harmonies arranged by the band’s principal songwriter, John Phillips. Their debut album from 1966 is a genre-hopping delight taking in pop, soul and folk-rock and contains the singles “California Dreaming”, Monday, Monday” and “Go Where You Wanna Go” as well as their unique take on the cover versions of “Spanish Harlem”, “Do You Wanna Dance”, “The In Crowd”, “You Baby” and the Lennon/McCartney composition “I Call Your Name”.

Sting “Ten Summoner’s Tales” Released in 1993 the themes explored are love and morality in an upbeat mood. The title is a play on Sting’s surname, Sumner, crossed with Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. The album, which was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 1993 contains the hit singles “If I Ever Lose My Faith In You” and “Fields of Gold”. In 1994 , it was nominated for five Grammy awards, winning Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, Best Male Pop Vocal Performance ("If I Ever Lose My Faith in You") and Best Long Form Music Video. It was also nominated for, but did not win, Album of the Year, Record of The Year or Song of the Year The album was recorded at Lake House, Wiltshire, mixed at The Townhouse Studio, London and mastered at Masterdisk, New York The cover of the album was photographed at Wardour Castle in Wiltshire and features Sting’s Iceleandic horse, Hrimnir.

Sandy Denny “Sandy” Legendarily, the only guest musician Led Zeppelin ever had and described by Richard Thompson as ‘the greatest British female artist of her generation’ Sandy Denny's music has, over recent years, finally come to the attention of a much bigger audience. 'Sandy' is considered by many to be her finest album and is a beautiful blend of the traditional style with which she is most often associated and a slightly more lavish sound that would become more prevalent in her later work.

Rufus Wainwright “Want One” Released in September 2003 and produced by Marius de Vries ( Bjork / Madonna / Massive Attack ) “Want One” was Rufus Wainwright’s 3rd studio album for Dreamworks and followed on from the commercial and critical success of his eponymous debut album and second album, “Poses”. Originally intended as a double CD, Want One contains the singles “Oh What A World” and “I Don’t Know What It Is” and features contributions from his sister Martha Wainwright, mother Kate McGarrigle, Teddy Thompson, Linda Thompson and Joan Wasser aka Joan As Policewoman. The album won the prestigious Outstanding Music Artist Award at the 15th GLAAD Media Awards and Best New Recording at the OutMusic Awards narrowly missing out on the Best Songwriter award. It was also nominate for the 2004 Short Music Prize. The second part, Want Two was released in 2004 and both were finally reunited as Want in 2005. This 2LP set was only every officially released in the US and North America and has become something of a “holy grail” for his fans. Copies on E-Bay fetch upwards of £350!

MORRISSEY “KILL UNCLE” REMASTERED Through his time as front-man of The Smiths and subsequent enduring solo career, Morrissey has cemented his place as one of the true UK music icons. This position has ensured him a large, dedicated fanbase and significant commercial success: to date he has notched up 33 Top-40 solo singles (with 10 in the Top 10) and 11 Top-10 solo albums. This lasting success has not been limited to his early career either, with his last three albums charting No. 2, No 1 and No 3 respectively. Morrissey’s 2nd studio album ‘Kill Uncle’ (a UK No 8 on its release in March 1991) has now been remastered by Bill Inglot and comes housed in a gatefold, with completely re-designed artwork including rare contemporary photos whilst the infamous track ‘There’s A Place In Hell For Me And My Friends’ has now been swapped from the original album version to the US E.P. version The remastered version of ‘Kill Uncle’ is also available as a 2LP gatefold vinyl, with the same re-designed art. Preceding the LP is a reissue of the single “Last Of The Famous International Playboys”, which features a remastered version of the title track, plus a never before committed to vinyl version of “People Are The Same Everywhere” from a Janis Long session.

Many of the recordings included in the set have never been released before, or are rare / fanclub only gems. The extras in the vinyl box set include a live concert album, ‘Stockholm Syndrome’, recorded in Sweden in 1994, during the band’s last European tour - seven tracks from this recording originally appeared on a fanclub only CD, nine additional unreleased tracks from the concert are included here; an LP comprised of a BBC radio session recorded July 24 1993, and available here for the first time, and the original ‘Last Splash’ demo recordings from November 1992;· Four 10” EPs - ‘Safari’, ‘Cannonball’, ‘Divine Hammer’, and ‘Head To Toe’ and a 24-page booklet featuring previously unpublished photographs taken during the recording of ‘Last Splash’, personal photos taken during two years of touring, and reminiscences written by band members and others, including Kim Gordon and J Mascis.

IRON MAIDEN “MAIDEN ENGLAND” This live show was filmed across two sold-out nights at Birmingham N.E.C Arena, UK in November 1988 during the band’s “Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son World Tour”. The Maiden England ‘88 concert soundtrack will also be made available a limited double vinyl picture disc and Digital Download formats. The audio had previously only ever been available before on CD as part of EMI’s 1994 Sound And Vision Series packaged alongside the VHS, but with two tracks fewer than the video contained. Can I Play With Madness and Hallowed Be Thy Name were not featured as there was no space on the 1CD disc. Now with the three encores also included the double disc offers a total of 5 tracks previously unavailable on CD making this the first full and complete audio recording release of this historic tour.

RANCID REISSUES Rising from the ashes of Operation Ivy, Rancid were very much part of the Berkeley Scene that re-ignited an interest in punk rock in early 90s America. Rallying against the Bush administration and an unjust war in Iraq, bands like Green Day and The Offspring finally understood what had gone on in 70’s Britain. Whilst the heroin-chic grunge scene in Seattle was front page news, Berkeley remained an underground scene for many years, although in the wake of Nirvana’s demise, it was inevitable that the front-runners would soon become household names. But before all that, Rancid were fusing punk and two-tone in style as some of the original ska-punkers! We’re pleased to see their first 2 albums “Rancid”, “Let’s Go” and their 1998 LP “Life Won’t Wait” are being reissued by Warner Brothers.

SPARKY'S BAG PROGRESSIVE AND PSYCHE REVIEWS FROM THE UNDERGROUND

SPOCK’S BEARD “BRIEF NOCTURNES & DREAMLESS SLEEP” In their 20 years together, LA prog rockers Spock’s Beard have built a reputation for invention, musicality and sheer restive energy. Yet perhaps nothing they have done before can properly prepare you for their 11th studio album. ‘Brief Nocturnes And Dreamless Sleep’ is an album that will constantly surprise – “epic” is an overused word, but I think is the only way to describe the big symphonic rock sound! The band’s ‘old friend’, Neal Morse, who left the band in 2002, returns as songwriter on this album.

TANDYN ALMER “ALONG COMES TANDYN” The late, great composer, pianist, producer, MENSA member Tandyn Almer first emerged in pop culture consciouness as the writer of the 1966 smash single by The Association, “Along Comes Mary.” He went on to collaborate with fellow melodic savant Brian Wilson, most notably as the co-writer of “Sail On Sailor,” and published a songbook of his new compositions. A 15-track demo LP was recorded and pressed in a small quantity by his publisher, Davon Music, to distribute to potential recording clients. This was never commercially released, until now! Sundazed have unearthed this gem, which should be available in late March!

TWO MOUNTAIN REISSUES Mountain formed in Long Island, New York in 1969 and are one of many bands to be commonly credited as having influenced the development of heavy metal music in the 1970s. Mountain’s Mississippi Queen is one of the most revered hard rock songs in modern time. Amongst other staples like Deep Purple’s Smoke On The Water and BTO’s Takin’ Care Of Business, the song will forever stand the test of time. That particular smash hit was the lead off track from their top album chart hit Climbing! After pursuing separate musical paths for almost a decade, co-founders Lesley West and Corky Laing reunited Mountain with Mark Clarke on bass and recorded Go For Your Life in 1985. These albums will soon be available again via Friday Music and SPV respectively.

KLAUS DINGER & JAPANDORF The last and only record of Klaus Dinger (member of Kraftwerk, NEU! and La Düsseldorf)

before his death in 2008. All songs are previously unreleased. A real gem for fans of Krautrock and La Düsseldorf. In search of a new project, Klaus opened his studio in 2000 to various fine artists

and musicians for spontaneous recording sessions. Through an artist friend, Klaus was introduced to some Japanese musicians and artists living in Düsseldorf. The sessions with them had a dense and exciting atmosphere. From these sessions the new project, ‘Japandorf’, emerged.

PENNY RECORDS Italian label Penny Records take digging in the crates to a new dimension, cutting new vinyl pressings of lost cult soundtracks, library music, 50’s and 60’s noire pop, 70’s electronica and much more. It’s all quite overwhelming! Three titles have been announced for early April, including: Nino Rapicavoli “Divagazioni”, Daniela Casa “Società Malata” and Alessandro Alessandroni “I Cantori Moderni”. Click through for more info on each. All three releases come with a bonus CD format, and retail for £19.

JON ANDERSON “IN THE CITY OF ANGELS” In The City Of Angels is the fifth solo album by Yes front man Jon Anderson, released in 1988 upon his second departure from the band. Anderson invited outside songwriters to write for him (including ex-Motown ace Lamont Dozier), rather than creating an album wholly of his own material. Stewart Levine, best known for his work with Culture Club, was brought in to produce.

MORE FROM Music On Vinyl

The unstoppable juggernaut that is the M.O.V. release schedule continues to throw out a diverse selection of new releases. Here’s our pick of the latest announcements:

ALLMAN BROTHERS “REACH FOR THE SKY” The band that had been through so much - and then some - released Reach For The Sky in 1980. The transition from their origins of groovy Blues Rock (with Duane Allman still in their ranks) to Country Rock had been completed around this time. Under the leadership of guitarist and original member Dickey Betts and founding member/organ player Gregg Allman the band churned out eight songs for this gospel-infused album. Reach For The Sky even attained a minor hit with the song “Angeline”.

JAMIROQUAI “EMERGENCY”, “SPACE COWBOY” AND “TRAVELLING WITHOUT MOVING” Supercar lover and showman Jay Kay started Jamiroquai in Manchester during the early nineties, seeing their debut Emergency On Planet Earth receive massive amounts of critical and public acclaim. Backed by an incredibly tight band, Jamiroquai delivered a Stevie Wonder-esque brand of highly infectious and addictive Funk with a capital F. So infectious in fact, it became a pop staple almost overnight. Having amassed a huge fanbase in the UK, the popularity of this horde of planet savers spread worldwide over their subsequent two albums. Music On Vinyl is proud to release these first three albums simultaneously, including follow-ups The Return Of The Space Cowboy [MOVLP730] and Travelling Without Moving [MOVLP731]. All three with remastered audio for maximum aural pleasure!

THE RAVEONETTES “PRETTY IN BLACK” The second full-length album of Danish Fifties/Psych Pop duo The Raveonettes was released in 2005. On Pretty In Black, Sune Rose Wagner and Sharin Foo abandoned the strict recording rules the band laid upon themselves on their preceding efforts (including limiting the amount of different chords in

one song, keeping an entire album in one tuning - which was in fact B Flat Major for The Chain Gang Of Love [MOVLP069]) and keeping song running times under three minutes. Instead, the

group further expand on their signature sound of Fifties inspired Rockabilly Noise Pop with the eerie feel of a thriller movie soundtrack. Special appearances on this album are made by Maureen

Tucker of Velvet Underground on drums, Martin Rev on drum machine and Ronnie Spector, also known as Veronica Bennett of the fabulous Ronettes [MOVLP674] on backup vocals.

First 1000 copies are numbered & limited on coloured vinyl (pink/black marbled)

LITTLE VILLAGE “LITTLE VILLAGE” Little Village is the all-star lineup consisting of singer John Hiatt, guitarist Ry Cooder, bassist Nick Lowe and drummer Jim Keltner. These are the very same musicians that were responsible for recording John Hiatt’s breakthrough album Bring The Family (1987). Five years later they decided to reconvene under a new name and the result was the excellent Little Village. The magic between these guys is undeniably incendiary, they rock harder than they did on Bring The Family, grooving their way through 11 upbeat songs. The guys had fun recording and performing as Little Village, which shows throughout this superb album. Unfortunately, there are no subsequent albums of this super-group, but that makes the album Little Village even more unique.

JOHN MARTYN “GRACE & DANGER” During the divorce from his wife Beverly, John Martyn wrote and recorded songs which reflected his

strong and emotional upheaval that he was experiencing at the time. These songs were so personal and unsettling that Island Records didn’t want to release the album at first and waited for a year to

do so. Right from the start Martyn sets a somber feel with the seductive “Some People Are Crazy” and he continues with beautiful tracks as “Sweet Little Mystery”, tormented blues of “Hurt In Your

Heart” and he ends with the heartbreaking track “Our Love”. These are just a few of the highlights that Grace & Danger offers. With some of his clearest, strongest singing in years and a collection of

terse, honest originals, Grace & Danger shows John Martyn at the top of his game.

The full list of MOV titles can be seen on the Recent Releases and Forthcoming Pages.

MICHEAL GARRICK QUARTET “SILHOUETTE” Never released before, this is a mono 1958 recording of great British pianist Garrick’s first ever band, including Josephine Stahl vocals, Peter Shade vibes, Brian Barnes drums and Paul Hemmings bass. He would go on to form a landmark quintet featuring Joe Harriott and Shake Keane and record a string of classic albums on Argo in the 60s and 70s, although he still continues to push the boundaries of British jazz to this day!

SIMON SPILLETT “SQAURE ONE” Simon Spillett is one of the most outstanding musicians to emerge on the British jazz scene so far this century! This is his first recording with the Quartet he formed early in 2011. John Critchinson, a stalwart of many of Ronnie Scott’s later groups, remains on piano. Two siblings of famous fathers join him on bass and drums – Alec Dankworth and Clark Tracey. All three, of course, are leaders in their own right, but here no egos are on display – just determination to support Spillett in the most inspirational, sympathetic and swinging manner.

DON RENDELL QUINTET “MANUMISSON” First ever commercial release of 1962 session at BBC Maida Vale, featuring Don Rendell tenor and soprano sax, Graham Bond alto sax, Johnny Burch piano, Tony Archer bass & Ted Pope drums. 45 RPM 10” EP, limited to 500 copies.

Joe Bonamassa – ‘An Acoustic Evening at the Vienna Opera House’ This show was recorded at the historic Vienna Opera House July 2012 during a very special two-week long unplugged tour, played to a limited audience over seven exclusive European shows. Varying from his predominantly electric blues shows, this presentation was an all-acoustic concert performance, making it a unique and very special show fans had been waiting years to experience. Supporting Joe on his vintage acoustic instruments is an eclectic assortment of craftsmen of disparate World flavours, provided by top artists from around the globe, including legendary Puerto Rican percussionist Lenny Castro, whose works spans genres and reads like a who's who of artists, including the Rolling Stones, Sir Elton John, Eric Clapton, Boz Scaggs, Toto, Steely Dan, Christopher Cross, Stevie Wonder, David Sanborn, Avenged Sevenfold, Little Feat, Tom Petty, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and hundreds of others.

Hans Theesink “Wishing Well” A solo acoustic roots-blues-americana album from Hans Theesink. After 7,000 concerts, two dozen albums and more than 40 years 'on the road', Hans is ready with a new solo album. In 'WISHING WELL' Theessink digs deep into the treasure of American homespun music, and comes up with some wonderful new interpretations of traditional songs, together with strong original compositions and personal favourites by Bob Dylan, Brownie McGhee and Townes van Zandt. He is a master when it comes to making songs his own: even the familiar classics end up sounding like typical Theessink-music. With his warm baritone and exquisite work on a variety of stringed instruments, Hans creates a laidback hypnotic groove and draws his audience into a rare and intimate listening experience.

ANALOGUE AUDIOPHILE ROUND UP

AL GREEN “GETS NEXT TO YOU” ON PURE PLEASURE After the shaky start of Green Is Blues, Al Green and producer Willie Mitchell established their classic sound with Green's second album, Gets Next to You. The main difference is in the rhythm section. Abandoning the gritty syncopations of deep Southern soul, the Hi Rhythm Section plays it slow and seductive, working a sultry, steady pulse that Green exploits with his remarkable voice. Alternating between Sam Cooke's croon and Otis Redding's shout, Green develops his own distinctive style, and Gets Next to You only touches the surface of its depth. Although the album is filled with wonderful moments, few are as astonishing as Green and Mitchell's reinterpretation of the Temptations' "I Can't Get Next to You," which turns the original inside out.

PATSY CLINE ON ANALOGUE PRODUCTIONS What praises haven't been lauded the immortal singing talent of the late, great Patsy Cline? She died at the height of her career, at age 30, with two other stars of the Grand Ole Opry, and her manager, in a private plane crash near Camden, Tennessee, on the group's return to Nashville from Kansas City. Before that ill-fated flight, though, she left a musical legacy as one of the most influential and successful female vocalists of the 20th Century. In the late 1950s and the '60s, country music was essentially a singles medium. This album, first released in 1967, collects a dozen of Patsy's biggest hits — all of them

from the country singles market — including "Walkin' After Midnight," "Sweet Dreams (Of You)," "Crazy," and "I Fall to Pieces." Producer Owen Bradley surrounds Cline's full-throated, emotionally charged vocals with lush, sophisticated arrangements that set the standard for Nashville's "countrypolitan" sound. And trust us, on this 200-gram QRP pressing, mastered by Sterling Sound, Cline's seductive vocals have never sounded clearer or richer.

In other Analogue Productions news, we’re delighted to see the following titles on the release schedules for late spring:

STEPPENWOLF “STEPPENWOLF” Steppenwolf have become synonymous with their huge Harley ridin'-hit, "Born to be Wild", although in reality, their success was far broader, with sales totalling more than 25 million units worldwide. Steppenwolf started life in Canada in the early '60s as The Sparrows, but did not find fame until they had changed their name and released their rockin' album debut in 1968. When two tracks, "Born to be Wild" and "The Pusher", were used in the film "Easy Rider," the success of the album was assured. It marked the first of five consecutive gold certified albums but after the release of For Ladies Only in 1971, the band split, eventually reforming in 1974. Their history is littered with a succession of band members, substance abuse issues and several break-ups and reformations, but Steppenwolf endures. Now their eponymous debut album originally released in 1968 is back and stunning audiophiles — courtesy of Analogue Productions and Quality Record Pressings!

LYNRYD SKYNYRD “SECOND HELPING & NUTHIN FANCY” Whilst “Pronounced” propelled Skynyrd into the mainstream rock arena in 1973 with its harder edge and much more raw sounding production than their peers The Allman Brothers, it was “Second Helping” that sent the band into hyperspace, simply on its opening track Sweet Home Alabama. The modest album titles suggests that deep down, here’s a band who just wanted to get on with playing, and sure enough “Nuthin Fancy” is exactly that. It’s a raw, no nonsense, gritty southern rock jam of an album, so packed full of solid tunes, that the lack of a singular huge radio friendly mega hit hardly notices. If anything, it brought the band back down to earth, and whilst Sweet Home Alabama developed a life of its own, Nuthin Fancy enabled them to carry on as a band, rocking to this day! As with Steppenwolf above, these two classics are coming very soon on Analogue Productions in both 200g LP and SACD.

STOCKFISCH RECORDS BACK IN STOCK We’re pleased to report we’ve just had a bumper parcel of new stock from the excellent German audiophile label Stockfisch. Many of you heard some of their artists at the recent Bristol show, it seems many rooms were demonstrating their equipment with Stockfisch releases, due to their second to none approach to recording and pressing. One such artist was Chris Jones, who’s “Roadhouses & Automobiles” CD is now in stock, and also a number of titles by David Munyon. You’ll find all the perennial favourites back in stock, such as Sara K “Waterfalls”, Bassface Swing Trio’s “Tribute To Cole Porter”, The Paperboys and Beoga’s “Live From The Stockfisch Studio” exclusive series all on 180g vinyl and hybrid SACD. Berlioz/Bernstein/Orchestre Natinoale de France “Harold in Italy Op 16” Leonard Bernstein was one of the most recorded conductor/composers in history and whereas most of his work was released on CBS (Sony) and Deutsche Grammophon, during the 1970s several notable EMI recordings came out of his association with the Orchestre National de France (including Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique (HIQLP014). EMI had recorded Orchestre National de France (also known as Orchestre National de l'Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française (ORTF)) for many years under its chief conductor Jean Martinon. However, largely as a result of the concerts he gave in the 1970s, Bernstein immediately struck up a rapport with the orchestra and the result was magic: "The French orchestra play beautifully for Bernstein, and they also sense the ebb and flow of tempo which he imparts to the music." as the GRAMOPHONE wrote in 1977. Recorded on 3 November 1976 at the famous Salle Wagram, Paris. Produced by John Mordler and engineered by Paul Vavasseur.

Rossini/Colin Davis/Royal Philharmonic Orchestra “Overtures” Sir Colin Davis conducts the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for this audiophile recording of Overtures by Rossini. This is one of Sir Colin Davis’s early recordings before his signed to Philips, made when he was establishing his name as a conductor and was Musical Director at Sadler’s Wells Opera Company in London, having come to their notice by conducting successful performances of Don Giovanni at the Royal Festival Hall standing in for Klemperer when he fell ill and The Magic Flute at Glyndebourne standing in for Beecham when he was taken ill. Davis went on to be chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in 1967 and in 1971 succeeded Sir Georg Solti as Music Director of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He has since held posts with many international orchestras, including a ten year stint as chief conductor of the LSO in 1995. His repertoire is broad but he particularly associated with the music of Berlioz, Mozart and Sibelius. Recorded on April 22, June 18 and October 23, 1961 at No. 1 Studio, Abbey Road, London. Produced by the legendary Peter Andry and engineered by Edward Huntley.

Harry Belafonte is a Super Star known throughout the world for making "Calypso" mainstream. When you think of Harry Belafonte's greatest hits, you think of "Calypso". THE RETURN OF THE ROCKINGBIRDS Not a hi-res disc, but since the band have previous form on vinyl, we thought we’d mention this one: The Return Of The Rockingbirds is the band’s 3rd album. Self-produced and recorded over the past couple of years at Reservoir, Ernie’s and Ilex studios, all songs were written by the band’s lead vocalist Alan Tyler. The Rockingbirds released their self-titled debut in 1992 on Heavenly Recordings. A much loved and acclaimed record and one which in equal parts bucked the musical trends of the time and anticipated the alt-country

movement which was to follow. Their beautifully written, heart-felt songs resulted in the North London band being talked of in the same breath as the likes of Uncle Tupelo and The Jayhawks. They would release a second album, ”Whatever Happened To The Rockingbirds?” in 1995 before imploding and heading off in their separate directions. Returning, phoenix-like in 2008 to play Heavenly’s 18th birthday celebrations at the South Bank in London, they would play further shows in 2009 to support the re-release of a re-mastered and expanded version of their debut album. The enthusiastic response led to a re-grouping of the band, who are just as important and relevant now as they were twenty years ago!

esoteric hi-fi to Manchester in this new spring timeslot. Here at Diverse Vinyl, we jump at the chance

as usual, with live music throughout the day and loads of limited exclusive vinyl on sale for one day
