At the Phoenix House, the cele-brated drug rehabilitation center in New York City, newcomers arrive and gather for their first session. They sit around in their chosen seats and make small talk. Then someone will say something like, “It isn’t your mother or society or even the pushers who put the needle in your arm. You did.” Only then does the therapeutic process begin. US News and World Re-

port.

Most of what we learn is due to pain. We suffer and grow. Who among us cannot attribute innu-merable physical and psychic scars to moments of shame, des-pair, and loss? No one seeks pain but we all grow from it.

They say that nothing is assured except “death and taxes.”

Regarding the first, we are all survivors. As we age, the scythe of the Angel of Death comes closer, and we feel more vulnera-ble to its sharp edge. Judaism has many prescriptions for ad-dressing death. You know what they are: immediate burial, shov-eling earth into the grave, sitting shiva, observing the eleven months of mourning, yahr-zeit… Nowadays, I find most folks want to speed the pro-cess. They want to get it over with quickly and “move on.” It is a shame.

Life waits for no one and we have to run if we expect to keep up. I wish society would turn back to when time was not a commodity but a luxuriant gift. With a determination to sit, tell stories of the dead, say kad-dish, and openly weep, we give ourselves the gift of heal-ing. When we take responsibility for the true loss we have experi-

enced, we own it, understand it, and learn from it. And such time is a luxury.

What do we learn from attention to the time of shiva and going to say kaddish on yahrzeits? One lesson is that we are far less than we think we are. In the end we are dispensable. We may attempt to stave off the claws of the death but it will only be a temporary stay. We worry: then what will happen to our clients? People who depend on us? They will “move on” and forget about us. This is one of the lessons of being quiet and allowing time to do its healing work.

An idea from our past: the kad-dish is the prayer that asks God to acquit the dead. It is an altruis-tic prayer, a gift to the souls who have passed. That is noble.

Another item learned from say-ing kaddish is the broad path that is left by death. When we stand to say kaddish in a community we are rarely alone. Looking around we see others who have suffered. We knowingly look at them, and they at us as we share a bond, a sacred unspoken bond. We support one anoth-er. That is why kaddish happens only in a minyan, in a communi-ty. It is never to be said alone.

Abraham Joshua Heschel wrote, “God is concern, not only pow-er. God is He to whom we are accountable. In the wake of reli-gious insight, we retain an awareness that the transcendent God is He to Whom our con-science is open.” In other words, God wants us to be accounta-ble. He does not desire us to pass by the many roads of life without looking both ways. We are sup-posed to laugh, cry, talk, and be silent at all the appropriate times.

And regarding taxes (see third paragraph), a law student was finishing a course in federal in-come tax. As he was walking in to take the final exam he spotted a penny, heads up, on the ground. He picked it up and said to the professor, “It must mean good luck for the exam.” “Not necessarily” he replied. “But it does mean you have taxa-ble income.” Be accountable. Be responsi-ble. It is God’s gift to you and the best gift you can give your-self.

February was a busy month at Beth Shalom and March promis-es to be equally busy. For February, in addition to the usual events - Musical Shabbat, Tuesdays with Friends, Harvest Hope, and an adult education seminar – we also participated in Mitzvah day, and began a new program, “Kolot” for train-ing congregants in chanting Torah and Haftorah.

Our religious school had the se-cond “Shabbat Playtime” pro-gram for younger children, the Otis Spunkmeyer cookie fund-raiser project, and sponsored a “Schoolhouse Shabbat” with services conducted by the stu-dents followed by a Shabbat dinner. The Schoolhouse Shab-bat, in particular, was an espe-cially successful program with over 150 children, parents, and grandparents participating in a lively Kabbalat Shabbat service. Several members approached me after the service with the same thought – this was the fu-ture, and the future looked bright. In the first seven days of March, we will have Musical Shabbat & special oneg, a Shabbat kiddush celebrating Florence Levy’s 105th birthday, an adult educa-tion seminar with Federica

Clementi of USC, Tuesdays with Friends, and Purim (complete with Megillah read-ing, masquerade ball, live mu-sic, and more.) And at the end of March, the religious school will have a model Seder (warning – Pesach is just over a month away.) Our synagogue has many activi-ties and programs – come and join us! Sadly, we had two tragic losses in our community in February and our condolences go out to Aileen Sunshine & family and June Safran & family. May the families be comforted along with all mourners of Zion and Jerusalem. Hyman Karesh

The cold winds of February were no deterrent to our exploration of the growing season in Israel. Our pre school and Torah Tot students focused on Tu B’ Shevat last month by planting Parsley, making birthday pictures for the Trees and painting murals with items found in nature. We also hung birdfeeders outside and decorated our bulletin board with our new monthly theme. Our He-brew school students engaged in discussions about Mitzvot and ethics. We read bible stories and identified how our Jewish values stem from the Ten Commandments. It’s almost spring time & time for Purim, the happiest, loudest holiday, one which teaches us that we should never give up hope. The students will explore its message, which lies not in how it began, but rather what it has become- a thankful and joyous affirmation of Jewish survival against all odds. The special quality of Purim is often reflected in the intriguing customs associ-ated with both its synagogue and home celebration. Reading the megillah, the grogger, masquer-ading, mishloah manot, and Purim spiels are all part of the rich and colorful tradition of this hol-iday deliverance. Community Yom Hashoah Program at Beth Shalom

Holocaust survivor, Ela Weissberger Opera-tunity Foundation, the South Carolina Council on the Hol-ocaust, and The Columbia Holocaust Education Committee will be presenting the children’s opera Brundibár as part of "Week of

Remembrance…. a Celebration of Jewish Culture," April 15-21, 2012. Composed in 1938 by Czech composer Hans Krása with a libretto by Adolf Hoffmeister, children in a Jewish or-phanage first performed Brundibár in 1942. It was then per-formed 55 times in 1943 by the inmates of the Terezín concen-tration camp.

Holocaust survivor and the original “Cat” in the performances of Brundibár in Terezín, Ela Weissberger will speak and perform at each of the 3 performances (Friday, April 20th, 11am, JCC and 11am and 1:30pm on Saturday, April 21, Dreher High School). Cost is free, but reservations to insure seating must be made. Please contact

Janet Hopkins at [email protected] or (803) 777-0772. Weissberger was born on June 30, 1939, in Prague, Czechoslo-vakia. At the age of 11, Ela, her sister Ilona and their mother were sent to Terezín in one of the first transports. Ela was first placed in a cramped barrack with her mother, sister, and many other women and girls who were suffering from hunger and dis-ease. Later, Ela and Ilona were separated from their mother and forced to live in a separate barrack for children. While much was for-bidden in Terezín, many art forms were allowed to be produced, and Ela created several drawings depicting life that she lived in Terezín. These will be on display along with other artifacts be-longing to Ms. Weissberger. In 1943, it was declared that a children’s opera entitled Brun-dibár was to be performed in Terezín. Ela was requested to be a part of the show and was cast as the “Cat.” The first performance took place in September 1943, and was repeated each week. As time went on, cast members continually needed to be replaced as children were transported out of Terezín, most often to their death in Auschwitz. Ela, however, was permitted to stay with her mother and sister, playing the role of the “cat” in all 55 of the Brundibár perfor-mances. After years of watching many of her friends transported out of Terezín to their death, Ela and her sister were finally freed on May 5, 1945. Her mother followed later. Of the 64 members of her family, only four survived the war. In 1949, Ela moved to Israel along with her mother and sister. There, she served in the army and met Leopold Weissberger, another Holocaust survivor and Israeli soldier. The two married and immigrated to America where Ela took care

of their two children. They were followed by Ilona and her hus-band and their mother. Today, she lives in New York and works as an interior designer. She has dedicated her life to traveling across the United States and abroad to tell her story and honor the victims of the Holo-caust. She is the focus of the book, The Cat with the Yellow Star: Coming of Age in Terezín by Susan Goldman Rubin. Brundibár is a children’s fable and features a young brother and sister, Pepicek and Aninku, who are trying to help their sick mother. The themes that infuse this charming score are the im-portance of courage and of uniting together against tyranny. The character Brundibár is a bully who brutally monopolizes life in the town, a parody on Hitler’s dominance and dictatorship during this time period. He is sarcastic and oppressive. Together the children overcome his dominance and defeat him. Weissberger’s participation provides a unique opportunity to hear stories from Terezín first hand. Ms. Weissberger will also be speaking at Yom Hashoah, April 19th, 7 pm at Beth Shalom. Brundibar is only one event in the "Week of Remem-brance". The opening event on April 15th at the Koger Center for the Arts, also sponsored by the USC School of Music, is "Defiant Requiem-Verdi at Terezin". The Defiant Requiem is a powerful multi-media production which tells the story of the courageous and innovative prisoners who used their performanc-es of the magnificent music of Verdi’s Requiem to show their defiance to their captors. The work interweaves Verdi’s Requiem with video clip interviews of actual Terezin survivors, dramatic readings from inmate’s diaries, and Nazi film footage. There are different community events daily, many free.. The "Week" hon-ors the different mediums of orchestral, voice, art, film, choral and symphonic that both came from the Terezin concentration camp and from the Jewish heritage. The prisoners spoke of their ability to find strength and solace through the arts, and how these simple acts of creativity served as an act of defiance in the face of oppression. challenge to fight hunger. There are many hungry in our community and the JFS Food Pantry is for the needs of fellow Jews who can only obtain kosher foods here.

The Feinstein Foundation enables matching funds for every dollar and every food item donated to the Jewish Family Service Food Pantry. Here is what Mr. Feinstein writes about his mission for matching funds:

My name is Alan Shawn Feinstein. For the past 14 years, I have been giving away $1 million each year to anti-hunger agencies throughout the country. I am doing it again… Why am I doing this? Because I believe each of us was put here

on earth to do what we can to help those in need. You got this

letter because we feel that YOU believe that, too. My money started this campaign but it is YOU who will help de-

cide how many needy people in your city or town will be fed this year. All that will matter to us someday is what we did while we

were here to help those who needed us. This has become the greatest grass roots campaign ever to fight hunger in our country. Your donation makes you a partner in it with me!

Green Eggs and Corned Beef (not the Dr. Seuss tale)

I love a parade and NYC is the Mecca of parades. There's a Caribbean Day parade, an Israeli Independence Day parade, a Puerto Rican Day parade, the annual Labor Day parade and of course, the Thanksgiving Day parade and numerous other parades. One of the most popular is the St. Patrick's Day parade. Un-til one of the fiscal crises the center line on 5th Avenue, the parade route, was painted green. An unusually large turnout is visible. Perhaps because of the large contingent of uni-formed members of the police and fire departments along with their family members (unofficially it has become al-most acceptable for school-aged family members to skip school on this day.) The parade is usually led by the grand marshal and the Em-erald Society Official NY Police Department Drum and Bagpipers. A number of years ago the selected and honored parade marshal was a non-resident and a non-citizen. He was the Mayor of the City of Dublin. This event was extremely unique and extensive media cov-erage was afforded both here and in Ireland. The selected dignitary as Grand Marshal of the Parade was the Honorable Lord Mayor of Dublin, Ireland. He was elect-ed by popular vote in a city that has a 90% Roman Catholic population. The Lord Mayor of Dublin was Robert Briscoe, who was JEWISH. Mayor Briscoe served from 1956 through 1957 and was re-

elected and served once again from 1961 through 1962. In 1988, Ben Bris-coe, the son, was the elected Lord Mayor of Dublin. And, in 1977 in the nearby City of Cork, they elected Gerald Goldberg as their Lord Mayor. So whether you are Galic or "Galitzianer," Hibernian or Hebrew, you can partake in the traditional celebration with corned beef and green cabbage along with a glass of green beer. As for me, I'll have mine on rye and a substitute with another green vegetable - a sour pickle and a Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray soda (formerly known as tonic.) Growing up, momma always insisted that we have dessert after the entree. This edict can be disregarded this year. We should definitely have that traditional delicacy-HAMMANTASCHEN prior to the corned beef , lest we miss the important fact that the Festival of PURIM is March 8 and that is about a week prior to St. Paddy's Day. There's your license to have your dessert before the entree. An opportunity to have your dessert and eat it, too. PURIM WILL BE CELEBRATED ON MARCH 8th. The first meeting of Sit and Knit (or Crochet) at Beth Shalom will take place on Thursday, March 15th - 1 p.m. thru 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome; from beginners to experienced.

We need yarn that is either worsted weight or sport yarn.
