The Ultimate Job in Ireland(and Probably the World!) 2011

Last year a PR company in Ireland created the Ultimate Job in Ireland (and Probably the World!) to promote a new destination wedding and honeymoon company. The job was for a romantically linked couple to act as Honeymoon Testers. The successful applicant travelled the world testing out honeymoon suites and honeymoon destinations. With a salary of !20,000 and six months all expenses paid to some of the most luxurious destinations in the world, it is no wonder they got 30,000 applications from over 98 countries within 6 weeks!

The ‘job’ created a new line of tourism to Ireland – destination weddings. It also attracted huge international media interest around the globe, including the Oprah Winfrey Show.

This year, the same company is creating the Ultimate Job in the World 2. They already have over 3,000 people around the world waiting for the application form and international media interested even though the details of the job have not been announced yet!

This year the job focuses on promoting everything Irish. Irish Pubs around the world will play a major part and those pubs interested will become application centres. This will have the potential of attracting a whole new clientele to your premises and will attract local press interest and possibly international media interest in your premises.

Interested?! If so contact the organisers asap and tell them where you are located. They will then send you an information pack about the project and how you can become the Centre of Irishness in your region!

JOINED UP THINKINGWhen looked at individually, Irish Pubs are a cottage industry. Globally it’s a billion

euro industry. Irish Pubs are more than brilliant places for food, drink, music and

hospitality - they connect culture and community. When done well, there’s nothing

in the world to compare; it’s where Broadway meets Wall Street...

Bizarre as it may seem, the owners and managers of these pubs outside of Ireland

have never come together - until now that is!! There’s an urgency for the new

Government in Ireland to get Enterprise, Tourism, Culture and Foreign A#airs

with Business behind this connectivity globally to improve quality and standards.

Facilitated by technology, ease of travel and communication, we can work as a

global team, and celebrate the individuality of pubs and pub groups while at the

same time creating ‘joined-up thinking’.

The benefits in linking with Ireland - food, drink, people and all the ingredients

that makes pub successful, are clear. The Irish Pubs Global Owners & Managers

Association brings it all together - supporting each organization in achieving its

objectives. To make this association truly successful for our members, we need

your full support.

In this publication, the Kilcullen Growth Fund (KGC) is outlined. We are supporting

it as a conservative investment, spreading risk, in a sector which many pub owners

and managers are familiar. KGC will be investing in ‘Blue Chip’ stocks such as Pernod

Ricard, owners of Irish Distillers and Diageo, owners of Guinness, thus supporting

these companies to become more profitable and more Irish!

We’re holding an IPG Owners & Managers Conference for the Americas, hosted by

our Philadelphia Chapter under Dave Magrogan of the Kildare’s Irish Pub Group on

April 18 - 20th, see Page 7. It promises to be a mighty event, packed with content,

learning, connecting with Ireland, contributing to the greater good, making better

business and great fun to boot.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Warm Regards,

IT WAS only until Owners & Managers of a diverse group of

Irish Pubs around the world came together that the dynamic of

what can be done was fully realized. We felt that the concept

was right but it was the success of the inaugural Conference in

Ireland that drove home the need. A lot was achieved, much

valuable information changed hands, there was a lot of learning

and dangerous fun.

It started Monday evening when the Mayor of Galway, Michael

Crowe (himself from a pub family Crowe’s of Oranmore) formally

welcomed delegates. It ended with a pub crawl as delegates

bonded as the pints flowed setting a warm tone for the 3 days.

Star of the evening was local publican Michael ‘Mixer’ Dooley

who ended the Conference as IP Global Recrutiment’s first

placement at McGettigans Pub, Bonnington Tower in Dubai where

by all accounts he is ‘flying’ preparing for St Patrick’s Day (see

“Sessions in the Sand” on Page 13)

The objective of the convention lay in mapping uncharted

territory: bringing the overseas Irish pub owners together.

Delegates came from as far afield as: Shanghai, Melbourne,

Auckland, Arizona, Florida, Vancouver, New York, Belgium,

Philadelphia and Kampala, Uganda.

The event was endorsed by Tourism Ireland, Irish Distillers,

Bord Bia and the Guinness Storehouse.

Added to this, there was a strong Irish presence, notably

from: The Irish Pub Company, Tayto, Ballymaloe Country Relish,

Ol Irish Pubs and a host of other food and service providers

within the industry.

Prominent Pennsylvanian pub owner, Dave Magrogan kicked

“THE CONFERENCE WAS A GREAT

SUCCESS FROM OUR POINT OF

VIEW AND WE’RE GOING HOME

WITH FAR MORE INFORMATION

AND ENTHUSIASM THAN WE

COULD HAVE HOPED FOR”

GARY REILLY

SUNSET GRILL, VANCOUVER

off proceedings with a vibrant presentation on

his Rhino Living philosophy; that combined

his unshakeable drive for success with a goal

orientated philosophy, emphatically delivered

by Dave, the founder of Kildare’s Irish Pubs,

who had just touched down in Ireland after

opening his latest pub, in South Bend, Indiana.

Guinness Storehouse and Tourism Ireland

followed suit with presentations detailing the

importance they place on the overseas Irish

pubs and their role in connecting with not

only the Irish Diaspora.

Bord Bia provided a chef and hosted a

cooking demo leaving attendee’s mouths

watering for lunch, a menu by Bord Bia.

Rory Guinness was the star of the event.

He gave his time based on a charitable

contribution to the Iveagh Trust Charity gave

insight into the history of the most famous

drink of all time.

The final event of the afternoon was the

Jameson Whiskey Tasting. Over the course

of an hour, all present were treated to an

education on the history of Jameson, Powers

and Paddy Whiskies.

The insightful history lesson was made

all the more interesting with the tasting of

several of the whiskies.

At Tuesday’s Gala Ball over 3,000 euros was

raised for the ISPCC and Ocean Youth Trust.

Mel McNally was honored with a lifetime

achievement award for his role in the industry

while the following morning Mel gave an

excellent talk on design and trends of Irish

pubs.

Social media and Bar blogging phenomenon

Barry Chandler stressed the importance

of proper use of the social media tools to

connect with your patrons, even when they

are not in the premises. The remainder of

proceedings were dominated by open panel

discussions touching a broad range of areas

from recruiting and motivating staff to

maximizing food revenue.

Saint Patrick is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland and banishing the snakes. A cynical look at Ireland over the last 3 years could say that we drove Christianity out and brought the snakes back!

However, one thing is not in doubt, and that is what the Irish pubs overseas bring to that great global Irish celebration. Chicago dying its river green on the day is world famous as is the parade in New York and this year celebrates its 250th birthday. Notably, prominent New York pub owner Paul Hurley plays a central role in the parade and festivities in the Big Apple on the day.

Here is a glance at Irish pubs around the world and what they do to celebrate being Irish on the 17th of March.

SHANGHAI SESSIONSIn the Far East, Declan Surlis at

the Irishman Pub in Shanghai will be marking the day with live music, drinks promotions and a hurling competition- to test the dexterity of the patrons. A complementary pint of Guinness will be presented to those who can successfully bounce the sliotar on the hurl 10 times. I cannot confirm if the Shanghai GAA team will be allowed to enter the competition!

MUNICH IRISH FESTIVALDublin native, music player and

Irish pub owner Paul Daly brings a weeklong run of events to Munich to celebrate Irish heritage and culture. Both his pubs will be focal points for the 7-day celebration including the parade on the 17th, an event that Paul himself has been heavily involved in for a number of years.

On the day itself, Paul and his band that have toured Europe on many an occasion will be playing a session in Kilian’s pub. Later on that night, an AC/DC tribute band will ap-pear to bring the house down! For more information:www.stpatricksday.de

O’Leary’s famous stew and mashed potatoes will be served and any talk of: recession, politics or the price of property will see the offender ejected from the premises, stripped of their green “Craic Ad-dict” t-shirt and flown home!
