Broxtowe Borough Councils Neighbourhood Wardens were calledafter the cross Mastiff puppy was found scared and covered in dirt atthe side of a high-speed country road by a passing motorist.The puppy named Benny after the motorist who found him

suffers from an eye condition known as Cherry Eye that will require anoperation costing up to 400 to rectify.The condition may be thereason why he was abandoned by his owner.

A mother is the one person adaughter can simultaneouslyabhor and adore.

But Deborah Tannen, author ofYou're Wearing That?Understanding Mothers andDaughters In Conversation, saysthat this unique and powerful

bond doesn't occur between amother and her son.

"Mothers and daughters arebrought face to face with reflec-tions of themselves, and that forcesthem to confront who they are,who they want to be and how theyrelate to others," she explains.The resulting relationship

therefore resembles "an intenselove affair", she explains, veeringbetween passion and pain".

It should come as no surprisethen that this relationship so oftenruns into problems.

As daughters and mothersaround the UK get ready forMother's Day now is a good timeto set things back on track.

Research has shown that adultwomen who get on with theirmothers are less anxious and

depressed, and have higher self-esteem than those who don't.

THE APPROVAL SEEKERThe mother-daughter relationship

provides the child with her firstexperience of feeling secure in theworld, says family counsellorStephanie Palin of Relate - andthat's often the root of theproblem.

As a daughter grows up shewants to continue to please thisperson who provides this support.

However, as Palin explains, thiscan turn many girls into approvalseekers who end up making thewrong decisions, all because theywant to please Mummy.

Although a mother may see hersupportive role as benign, thepressure exerted on the daughtercan be very intense, and lead tosituations where the daughterfeels 'she can't anything right'.

"I remember coming home withmy first senior school report with a99% on my maths, and my mothersaid to me, 'What happened to theother 1%?'," says Palin.

"It was never, 'Well aren't youclever' or, 'Good job, well done'. Iquickly learnt that if she said, 'Howdid your friend do?', the subtlemessage was that I could havedone better."This so-called 'tough love'

approach can explain the reasonwhy many mothers and daughtersseem to have such differing viewsover their bond.

REPAIRING PAST INJUSTICESAs mums and daughters age, themother's role moves from fromactively caring for her child to oneof quiet observance.

Some mums can feel rejected,Palin says, by the fact that theirbaby daughter's growing up.Theylose their sense of self as themother and can consequently findit hard to treat their daughter as anequal.

And while we little girls mightwant a fairytale world where mumis perfect and always says the rightthing, it's time that daughterswoke up to reality, she adds.

"Your mother is a flawed humanbeing, just as you and your friendsare flawed.

"You put up with your friends'flaws because, 'Oh God, that's justhow Jane is' - but you don't givethat leeway to your mum.Understanding why she doesthings the way she does, and thatshe did the best she could despiteher flaws, is essential to you havinga healthy relationship with her."

"In many families, Dad helps calmdown the tension between motherand child and soothes things over.He can play a pretty importantrole."

Understanding that your motherdoesn't mean to hurt you canactually transform your relation-ship, says Tannen.

So it's worth remembering thatnext time the two of you are underthe same roof.

World Owl Trust launches fund-raisingcampaign for Barn Owl nest boxes, Breeze finds out more...

The Word Owl Trust, which is based at MuncasterCastle in the Lake District, has launched a campaignto fund the building of 100 new nest boxes for oneof Britains most beautiful birds.

Barn Owl numbers have been in decline overrecent years mainly due to the loss of traditionalroost and nesting sites and suitable habitat areas.There are now only between 3,000 and 6,000

breeding pairs in the UK and approximately 70% ofthose rely on nest boxes to breed successfully.To raise funds for the new nest boxes, staff and

volunteers from the World Owl Trust are undertak-ing a gruelling 25 km sponsored walk in theAlicante Mountains in Southern Spain.The walkinvolves climbing five peaks with a total 1570metres of ascent. The trip will be funded entirelyby the participants and Brian Fagg, a director ofMountain Walks in Spain.Wulf Ingham, from the World Owl Trust, who will

be taking part in the sponsored walk, says:Barn Owls are incredibly beautiful. Seeing a white

ghost flying across a meadow is an unforgettableexperience.At the World Owl Trust we want to do everything that

we possibly can to protect and conserve this wonderful bird.The walk will be very hard work, but it will certainly be worthall the effort if we manage to raise the money we need for ournest boxes.

Nest boxes need to be replaced every four to five years andeach one costs approximately 50.The World Owl Trust wantsto put up the nest boxes in places with species rich grasslandwhich is ideal habitat for voles - the Barn Owls main source offood.The World Owl Trust is the worlds premier owl conservation

organisation and for more than 30 years has worked to ensurethe survival of endangered owls from all over the world.The Trust also operates a wildlife rehabilitation unit where

injured birds and animals are cared for until they are wellenough to return to the wild.The World Owl Centre, at Muncaster, is home to over 200 owls

from around 50 different species and sub-species. They rangefrom the biggest owl in the world - the European Eagle Owl -to the tiny Pygmy and Scops Owls.

50 YEARS OF CAPTURING THE IMAGINATION

When Beeston Camera Club member Godfrey Price won the Best Creative category in this years AnnualExhibition at Beeston Library, it brought back memories.Thats because Beeston Library is where the camera club started, and Godfrey, 80, was one of the founder

members after responding to an advertisement by local sweet shop owner George Whiteman in 1954.Godfrey joined with Harold Smith, father of Sir Paul Smith, the acclaimed Nottingham designer. It seems

that creativity runs in the family, as Harold was a regular winner of Club competitions, along with EricMoore.

Godfreys wife Eunice is also a long-standing member of Beeston Camera Club. She says:The Club hasntaltered much but photography has changed dramatically. In the old days, we could only work in black andwhite, although we did occasionally add colour by hand. Godfrey did all his own processing and built a darkroom outside the house.With colour and digital photography, we have a lot more scope now and its lesstime consuming.

Another advantage of digital is that taking pictures is relatively cheap and as Godfrey and Eunice point out,you dont have to go far for an interesting photograph.They list Attenborough Nature Reserve, WollatonPark, Highfields and the buildings in the city centre as good local starting points.

Godfrey adds:I love getting out and about with my cameras.Were always on the look-out for a goodphotograph and you always have to be ready. I like candid photographs, so as soon as you see your shot,you have to be there to capture the moment, or the moment is gone.Photographs are also useful historical records. Over the years Ive taken photographs of buildings in

Beeston before theyve been altered or demolished and one of my favourite pictures is the last train leavingVictoria Station before it closed.

Such is his contribution to the group, Beeston Camera Club has made Godfrey the Honorary Vice President.Hes proud that the Club he joined over 50 years ago has gone on to be one of Nottinghams great successstories.

Now based at the British Legion building on Hall Croft, the Club has received several national awards overthe years. Among its 75 members are the Vice President and Exhibition Secretary of the North and EastMidlands Photographic Federation (NEMPF) as well as its President, David Gibbins, who is a nationallyacclaimed judge.The Club also includes Beeston professional photographer Alan Thompson, winner of several Photographer

of the Year awards in the Portraits, Weddings and Commercial categories.Professionals from the industry and national/international award winning photographers include Beeston

Camera Club on their lecture circuit.The age range spans from 17 to over 80, but no matter how experienced you are, theres

always something to learn, which is why the Club is now runningworkshops on some Tuesdays (on matters such as Photoshop

and lighting) in addition to the regular Club meetingson Thursdays.

Believe it or not, thedegradation of our naturallandscape has now reachedthe point where gardens areconsidered very importantrefuges for wildlife of alltypes. Therefore, thethoughtful gardener reallycan make a big difference inthe fight to preserve ourwildlife.

To maximise this effort you can turn yourwhole garden into a wildlife refugeproviding all the proper habitats andplants to sustain a mini-ecosystem.This isthe perfect answer if you are a relativelylazy gardener too, because most wildlifelikes to be left alone.

However, even if you garden actively,there are a few simple things you can doto help support our native fauna. So hereare a few thoughts for you over thecoming months.Be lazy and avoid mowing by creating a

wildflower meadow.The best way is tosow wildflower seed in seed trays that

have little compartments and when theplants are a good size, these plugs can beplanted directly into the lawn. Carefullymanaged, you should be down to acouple of cuts a year, and as well asproviding good food for a host of bugs,you will get a glorious flowering display.Think about what you are planting.

Certain plants have a huge wildlifebenefit. Everybody knows butterfliesadore buddleia, but the caterpillars of thered admiral love nettles. Equally, manynative trees and shrubs provide safety foran enormous number of species includingbirds, insects and mammals - the oak ishome to over two hundred.They findprotection, eat one another, devour bits ofthe plant, but all depend on it in one wayor another. Bird boxes are anotherthought, but must be positioned out ofthe reach of cats.

Another splendid wildlife haven is apond or pool.This should be as large aspossible and vary in depth, with aminimum of 60cm at its deepest point. Ifproperly looked after, a pool can becomehome to a whole range of plants, insects,fish and amphibians such as toads andfrogs.The latter are both wonderful

natural predatorsof slugs, but dont

forget to give thema means of getting

out of the pool.Another tip to save

you some work and beeco-friendly is to leave a

remote corner of the gardenuntended as a refuge habitat.Finally, just have a think about what you

put on your garden. Maybe try biologicalcontrols and organic remedies beforetoxic pesticide chemicals. And rememberhomemade compost is so muchbetter than the ones you canbuy.

Plant of the month:Clematis Armandii

This clematis is a native ofChina and was first introducedinto Britain in 1900, by the famous and verysuccessful plant hunter Ernest Wilson. Thisstrongly growing, evergreen climber will spreadinto an amazing flourish that will brighten upany garden.

To see the creamy white blossoms (which are5-7cm across) set off against the glossy deepgreen of its long (12cm), leathery lance-shapedleaves is one of the true joys of Spring.

Long Eaton Round Table has presented the proceeds of theirfireworks evening to Treetops Hospice.Long Eaton Round Table have been holding their annual bonfire/fireworks

party at Treetops Hospice in Risley since 2004. Since then, this event hasraised around 10,000 for Treetops Hospice.

Long Eaton Round Table chairman Robert Westerman handed over thecheque for 1,500 to Treetops Hospice chief executive George Cameron onTuesday 15 February.The donation comes as Treetops Hospice records January as having the

highest number of new referrals ever taken in one month.George Cameron, chief executive of Treetops Hospice, said: "The support

we receive from groups like theLong Eaton Round Table isabsolutelyinvaluable, especially as moreand more people need ourservices. In January alone, we

had 150 new referrals andwe're currently looking

Attenborough Cricket Club is eagerly anticipating the forthcoming cricket season as they hope tobuild upon the successes of recent seasons.This year they will once again be fielding four seniorSaturday league teams, with their 1st XI playing in Division A of the South Notts Cricket League,togther with two Sunday sides playing both league and friendly cricket.

Indoor net sessions for all senior players have already started in the Sobers Hall at Trent Bridge onThursday nights from 8-9pm.These sessions run until April and any prospective new players are asalways most welcome to attend.

Outdoor net sessions commence at our ground on The Strand at the end of April and continuethroughout the season on a Tuesday evening. They also run a thriving Youth Section atAttenborough with four junior teams ranging from Under 11s to Under 15s, as well as two KwikCricket sides. Indoor practice sessions have been taking place throughout the winter and theoutdoor season begins at the end of April. Again any potential new players thinking of taking upcricket are very welcome.For further details about our annual Youth Section Registration Evening for new andexisiting members, please visit the club website www.attenborough-cc.net In addition, Attenborough CC welcomes any potential non-playing members also,as a spectator watching the cricket at weekend matches or by enjoying the facilities in their friendly Club Bar, which is open to members on every Tuesday club night and at weekends during the season.

In February, ErewashWriters Group hosted a poetryworkshop on the theme of Fire,run by former Derbyshire PoetLaureate, River Wolton.

It was a well attended andhighly productive workshop,with lots of inspiring activitiesand opportunities to share somegreat poetry.

Erewash Writers Group meetmonthly at Parklands Connexionin Long Eaton, and will behosting more workshopsthroughout the spring, includinga celebration of the Nene Valleyby Nick Penny and David Garretton 25th March and How toBring your Writing to Life by thenovelist Jude Morgan on 2ndApril.

The Nottingham Centre is a friendly social organisation affiliated to National Trust.Members enjoy a varied programme of talks throughout the winter,and outings during the summermonths. Recent topics have ranged from some gory anecdotes from Aly Greenway in her descrip-tion of life as an Environmental Officer: a nostalgic look at newspaper advertisements of yesteryear:and an enlightening evening with George Wilkinson, looking at Georgian Houses Great and Small.

In April the winter programme draws to a close with a talk by Beth Dawson of National Trust onnew developments at Clumber Park. The talk will be preceded by a very brief Annual GeneralMeeting. Finally, on April 14th,Tony Williams topic will be Pacific Panorama, coveringAustralia, Canada, Fiji, and New Zealand.The Centres summer programme began early with a tour of Birmingham Botanical Gardens and a

visit to Hagley Hall.In June there will be a trip to Stratford on Avon which includes a tour of the Lord Leycester Hospital,

a medieval charitable institution for the housing and maintenance of the needy, infirm or aged.Nottingham Centre members need not apply!Among other excursions planned are trips to Calke Abbey in July, and Hanbury Hall in August, withriver cruise and cream tea.There are also two great holidays on offer: a week in Hampshire in June, and

a trip to Newcastle in October.The Centres activities also include a Walking Group, a Local History Group, and a Gardens Group.The annual subscription to the Nottingham Centre is 5.00 (4.00 for another member at the same
