Volume 5, Number 2 The Insider SafeTree has joined Greenspace, The Nature Conservancy , and the Covells again in funding the Fifth Annual Cambria W alk in the W oods. The walk, as in the past, will take place on Ralph and Tracy Covell’s Cambria by the Pines Sea Ranch (formerly the Cambria Coast Ranch). As you may remember, Greenspace was honored by TNC at the Cambria Coast Ranch dedi- cation in the fall of 2000 for assist- ing in the easement acquisition. Since TNC’s historic purchase of a 1,500-acre conservation easement, we have worked closely with the conservation easement holder and the Covells to develop a method that provides public access to the property while protecting the ranching operation. Many Cambrians and visitors to our area have never had the opportunity to walk on this precious prop- erty. Thanks to SafeTree, The Nature Conservancy, the Covells, and Greenspace, we have the opportunity to visit this wonderful property again this spring. The number of tours on the ranch is limited to four weekends during the year . The spring walk has been the favorite and we will be offering 8 tours of 20 people. We expect the wildflower display to be excep- tional this year and we nearly always discover new plants and forest issues to talk about. In addition to the knowl- edge that Richard Hawley and Brad Seek share with the hikers on the tours, Greenspace has arranged for addi- tional experts to speak on a number of the tours. The guest speakers will have knowledge in forest genetics, botany, and forest pathology. Greenspace is very fortunate to have developed partnerships with state and international ex- perts on Monterey pines and look forward to sharing this good fortune with local resi- dents and with visitors to our community. Check the back of this Insider for the tour dates.  Space is lim- ited to 20 people per walk. The Cambria W alk in the W oods is a very popular event so RSVP early to ensure a spot. Having a sturdy pair of walking shoes, a water bottle, hat, and sunscr een is strongly s uggested. In addition, wearing light colored, lay ered clothing is con- sidered the prudent attire for the event. If you are interested in joining us on one of these scheduled “Cambria Walks in the Woods”, please call the Greenspace office earl y at 927-2866 o r email us at [email protected] to re serve your spot. We anticipate a high degree of interest in this activity and space will be in demand.
