COLLEGE COUNCIL
The first meeting of our new College Council was conducted last night and new councillors, Daniel Pohlner and Brian Barry, were welcomed to the group. Lionel Price was elected for another term as Council President and I congratulate him on his continuing commitment to our students. Our other Councillors are Jodi Elford (Deputy President), Doug Grant, Dallas Plant, Kylie Graham, Robyn Plant, Tonya Taylor and Lisa Zanker.
At the meeting, the 2015 Annual Report was tabled, as was the 2016 Annual Implementation Plan (AIP). The AIP sets the targets and outlines the strategies for the year ahead. It is an accountability document for our teachers and the school.
END OF TERM
Term One concludes on Thursday 24 March and students will be dismissed at 2.30pm. Buses will therefore be significantly earlier than normal and parents are asked to cater for this in their planning.
HATTAH DISCOVERY CAMP
Thanks to a grant organised by the Manangatang Landcare Group, students in Years 4 to 8 will be visiting Hattah-Kulkyne National Park on 23-24 March. Students will participate in a variety of activities to investigate the flora and fauna of the park and learn about some of the management issues. Hattah-Kulkyne is an internationally recognised significant wetland and supports a number of threatened species. It also harbours several feral species (both plants and animals) so needs to be carefully managed. It is also an important cultural heritage site, with Aboriginal involvement for thousands of years. Activities will include:
an interactive tour of the Hattah Lakes Environmental Watering Program.
canoe tours on the lakes
flora and fauna identification walks
astronomy after dark
spotlighting for fauna
Cultural Heritage session with Park Rangers
THANKS
My thanks go to Danny Elford for depositing a truckload of soil for the Community Garden vegetable beds – he will get the first Brussel Sprout. Our Year 4, 5 & 6 students participated in a Footy Clinic in Swan Hill this week. My thanks go to Lisa Zanker and Frog Arentz for making this possible – I have received very positive feedback about the trip.

AFL - St Kilda Footy Clinic
On Tuesday, March 15, the Saints
marched into town and students from
Year 4, 5 and 6 went to Swan Hill to
participate in an AFL clinic.
Seven St Kilda players, along with
students from St Mary Mackillop
College, led students in a range of
football drills and skills including: goal
kicking, obstacle course, marking and
accuracy kick and handball. Players in
attendance were 17 – Dylan Roberton,
13 – Jack Lonie, 22 Jade Gresham, 35
– Josh Saunders, 5 Shane Savage, 16 –
Jack Newnes and 40 Jack Sinclair.
At the conclusion, each of the players
gave away some Saints memorabilia.
Unfortunately we didn’t receive any
of this but we did all enjoy our day.
Eat more veg Struggling to get the kids to eat their veg? Try these tips to boost your kids’ vegetable intake: Grate it – Add grated carrot and zucchini to Bolognese, other pasta sauces, rissoles, meatballs and meatloaf. Puree – pureed vegies make great sauces, dips and spreads and can be added to almost anything, you can even add them to your baking! Think pumpkin scones, savoury and fruit muffins. Add some green – add some extra veg to sandwiches and wraps, or add a layer of spinach to lasagna. Beans – add kidney beans to casseroles and Bolognese or chickpeas to a curry or salad, or top a baked potato with baked beans.

College News
And so this is Easter … well almost. The year is certainly flying by and this is our last update for Term One.
In Literacy, students have been busy working on narratives titled The Scream. They
looked at a poster of the painting, The Scream by Edvard Munch, and then recorded lots
of adjectives for how the scream might sound. Narratives have been handwritten and
attached to a piece of art that depicts a person screaming. Students have continued to
read novels in small groups. This term, books read have included: Wolfmaster, Specky
Magee and the Season of Champions, The Garden of Empress Cassia, The Adventures of
Pippi Longstocking, Grandma Cadbury’s Trucking Tales and The 27th Annual
Hippopotamus Race. It is important that all students are reading regularly at home.
During Maths, we have been developing our understanding of place value and
reinforcing knowledge of basic number facts and correct procedures for four
operations. There has been a focus on developing a fast and accurate recall of tables
and all students are expected to have at least three stars on the tables’ chart before the
end of term. This requires that they recite a times table accurately and then answer
eight questions within a minute. I would encourage parents to help their children to
practise this skill. Maths Mate homework sheets are to be handed in by Friday of each
week. Week 6 is due tomorrow.
Next Tuesday, we will travel to Swan Hill to play cricket against students from other small schools within our district. In Sport, we
have been practising the skills of throwing, catching, bowling and batting. Why not have a game of backyard cricket over the
weekend.
Last week, Geordi, Alannah and Holly travelled to Melbourne with seven other students from Ouyen, Robinvale and Sea Lake to
commence their Young Researcher Fellowship. They met staff from the State Library and participated in a behind the scenes tour,
viewed special collection items, met their project mentors, had afternoon tea with the CEO and many other supporters, were
awarded special Library badges, participated in learning and reflection activities and online sessions in advance of the blended
learning course which will begin in Term Two.
In Science with Mrs Mackenzie, students have studied Light and in Humanities with Mr Matthews, they have learned about early
Australia with some work on Aborigines, explorers, white settlement and convicts. In Health with Mrs Riches, students have learned
about emergency first aid procedures and Year 4 made soup today. In Design and Technology with Mr Riches and Miss Graham,
students have designed objects to be created by the 3D printer, made posters and practised cutting wood straight. In Art with Mrs
Glazebrook, they have been celebrating the Chinese Year of the Monkey by colouring, painting and drawing. Some of their work is
displayed near the library. In Music with Mrs DePyle, Year 5 and 6 students have enjoyed playing and acting out the Muppets theme.
Year 4 are learning to play instruments such as piano, keyboard, guitar and drums.
Next week, we are off to Hattah.
All in all, it has been a very busy term.
