18 MARCH 2019 | TERM 1, WEEK 8

From the Principal

Dear Parents, Students and Staff,

“Marist spirituality inspires our understanding of how we are to live what Jesus commands us and what Champagnat dreams for us…Our spirituality is communal, best expressed and lived when we are gathered as family and community… Whatever the members of a community do – working, struggling for justice, serving society, praying or sharing meals and relaxation together – we recognise the blessings of God. We are blessed with the gift of life and with companions for our mission and our life’s journey. We proclaim, not just what God has done for each one of us, but what God is doing for us together, as family and community.” n. 103-106

Taken from: Water from the Rock – Marist Spirituality Flowing in the Tradition of Marcellin Champagnat.

Certainly the events of recent weeks have reflected our Marist Spirituality: a living expression of community. In particular, our Commencement Mass, Meet and Greet function and Open Day have been significant events where so many in our Marist Family have gathered, worked, prayed and relaxed together.

Our Commencement Mass was a wonderful and prayerful occasion where, as a community, we recognised the blessings of God – and where we had the opportunity

to further nurture the spiritual life of our community. Similarly, ‘Meet and Greet’ was a terrific evening giving us the opportunity to relax together, make new friends, renew old ones and celebrate the great Marist family to which we all belong.

On Open Day it was great to witness parents, boys and staff all working together with a common mission: to ensure we can continue to build up this great school as those before us have done, and exhibit the best of our Catholic Marist education for those who will enrol in the future. On days such as these, one feels privileged to minister in this particular community.

Our P&F Meeting last Wednesday evening was yet another opportunity to live out our Marist charism. The aim of our P&F at Marcellin is ‘to build a friendly and welcoming community that seeks to involve all.’ I congratulate and thank the following parents for taking on the leadership of our P&F for 2019:

President: Adele CornaleVice President: Neisha LicitraSecretary: Draga GreenwoodCommittee Members: Alex Brown, Jodi Roper, John Lawson, Siobhan Ryan, Mango, Brigid Taylor, Mary Ivancic

All of these events, and those that will occur throughout the year, are an expression of Marist Spirituality. My vision is to continue to build and strengthen our Marcellin Community; to ensure every boy, family and staff member experiences a real sense of belonging. It is when this occurs that we will

have an authentic Christian community.

I would particularly like to thank staff, both teaching and support, and our parents/carers and ex-students for your ongoing commitment to building community at Marcellin and, in doing so, ‘recognise the blessings of God.’

God Bless,Mark WoolfordPrincipal

From the Assistant Principal

Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to protect you. JEREMIAH 1:8

In this second week of Lent, we are reminded of the importance of taking time for reflection, preparation and conversation with each other and ourselves. It is also a time for renewal that allows us to grow in our own faith. This week Year 12 are on retreat and we acknowledge as a community the prime importance of this program in allowing Year 12 students to take some time out to reflect on their life journey, where they have come from, and where they are heading towards in the near future.

The retreat is a perfect opportunity for students to enrich their faith, from strong friendship bonds and remove themselves from the fast-paced world we live in.

Students will have time, space and structured activities to discover themselves and each other over the three days. Activities based on personal and communal reflection and sharing will hopefully allow students to make the most of time away from their studies and other commitments. An example of the holistic education offered here at Marcellin College.

As parents are aware, student wellbeing is central to learning and learning contributes to positive wellbeing. At Marcellin, the wellbeing of every boy is nurtured from the moment he enters the Homeroom class each day. The pastoral care programs seek to influence student wellbeing in distinctive and purposeful ways.

Now more than ever, schools and families need to play a role in building the wellbeing of students in their care whilst ensuring that the core business of the school is academic learning. At Marcellin, we acknowledge the importance of positive school/home relationships.

We received some information below from the WAYS Wellness centre on Practical and Effective parenting – All parents are welcome.

The WAYS Wellness centre is excited to offer parents/caregivers two fantastic free education opportunities. The first of which is a one off parent seminar conducted in conjunction with Waverley Council on April 1st.

The second is our popular Effective Parenting seminar/course commencing Mon May 20th. The effective parenting course is designed for parents with children aged 10-17, who want practical, effective information and strategies to build stronger parent-child relationships and better manage and understand adolescent behaviour. This is not a therapy group, the content is specifically designed to cover practical skills and information for normative adolescent processes.

The seminar (1st April) will provide a general overview of some of the key themes in the course, and the 5 week course will address the topics in more depth. Psychologists who specialise in child, adolescent and parenting issues, run these free events.

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

During Week 10, students from Years 7 and 9 will be completing a Naplan Online Practice test here at the College. This is to help prepare students for the mandated move to NAPLAN online testing, which will take place in May this year.

The Practice test is NOT an assessment of student ability and it will not be marked. It has been designed to allow schools and students to freely navigate through the online test environment and to explore the format and presentation of questions in preparation for completing the online tests this year.

The practice test provides students with an opportunity to become familiar with the types of questions they will experience in NAPLAN Online. Students should complete the test using the same type of device they will be using for NAPLAN Online.

Given that your son is completing NAPLAN this year, experience navigating the online platform will be most useful.

Students will be required to sit ONE test that should take about 45 minutes. The test is a combined reading,

grammar and numeracy test. There is no need for any academic preparation but it is our expectation that all students attempt the tests to the best of their ability.

To sit the test all students will need to:

• have their own set of earphones

have downloaded the locked-down browser prior to the test administration (this will be explained to students in PC.) www.assessform.edu.au/layouts/Technology/LockedDownBrowser.aspx• ensure their computer is fully charged

Year 9 Year 7

Thursday March 21 is Close the Gap Day. From 2006 Australia’s peak Indigenous and non-Indigenous health bodies, NGOs and human rights organisations have worked together to achieve health and life expectation equality for Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The aim is by 2030 that Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander child are born with the same opportunity as other Australian children to live a long, healthy and happy life.

So how are we doing?Only 2 of 7 Targets are on track for 2030:• Yr 12 Attainment • Early Education

Targets NOT on track: • Child Mortality• Employment • Literacy• School Attendance • Life Expectancy

Today, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can expect to live 10–17 years less than other Australians. For more information on how you can support the Close the Gap Campaign visit www.antar.org.au/close-gap

A reminder that “The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy” (NAPLAN) will take place at Marcellin College on Tuesday 21st May, Wednesday 22nd May and conclude on Thursday 23rd May. (Week 3.) Testing will take place each morning.

In 2019, students will complete this test online using their own computer. One of the main benefits of NAPLAN Online is tailored (or adaptive) testing, where the test automatically adapts to a student’s test performance.

The test presents questions of higher or lower complexity, depending on a student’s performance. Your child should not be concerned if they find questions more challenging than usual; they may be taking a more complex test pathway.

The College will provide support in the lead up to these assessments, including a supervised practice test in week 10.

NAPLAN assesses literacy and numeracy skills that are essential for progression through school. Students in Years 7 and 9 will participate in testing across the domains of reading, writing, language conventions (spelling, grammar and punctuation) and numeracy.

The tests provide parents and schools with an understanding of how individual students are performing. Parents will receive a detailed NAPLAN report later in the year.

Parents and students are encouraged to familarise themselves with the online format via the Naplan demonstration site: www.nap.edu.au/online-assessment/public-demonstration-site

The night focused on Social Justice issues, particularly with Easter approaching, the plight of the Cocoa farmers of Eastern Africa and modern day human slavery. 109,000 people are said to victims of modern slavery in the cocoa picking

industry. The boys have formulated a plan to raise awareness of the situation and to present this to the College community at an upcoming assembly.

MCC Representative SportSwimmingThe MCC Swimming Carnival was held on Thursday March 7 at the Aquatic Centre at Sydney Olympic Park. The College has a history of success at the MCC Swimming Carnival and a lot of this comes down to the hard work put in prior to the competition. The squad met at Botany Pool each Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning leading into the event which no doubt proved a difference in many of the events. The College was successful in retaining the Aggregate Trophy for the 35th time in the last 36 years, a fantastic record. Along with the Aggregate, the squad also retained the Juvenile and Senior trophy while finishing second behind Holy Cross College Ryde in the Junior competition.

There were also some fantastic individual results with the College winning twenty four races on the night. We had twenty four students qualify for the NSWCCC Swimming Carnival coming up in Week 10. Five records were also broken by Marcellin, congratulations to:

Public Speaking and Debating

On Friday 8th March, twelve students from Years 7-12 made their way to Holy Cross College in Ryde, for the first round of public speaking. From a list of six topics, each student composed a speech that was an interpretation of their chosen topic.

The night kicked off at 6pm for registration and speaking started at 6.30pm with a wide range of interpretations of the topics. In the face of tough competition, eight of the twelve conquered round 1 and made it through to round 2 which was held last Friday 15th at Aquinas College, Menai.

Again the competition was superb, the tension in the rooms could be cut with a knife, as the eight boys competed for the final round. On the night, two out of the eight boys succeeded in making it through to round 3, the Grand Final!

I would like to congratulate all of the following students for the hard work and dedication they put in for each round:

Year 7: Laurence Kiely

Year 8: Paul Diab and Zavier Novak

Year 9: Cormac Hickey and Teaghan Raffo

Year 10: Thomas Murphy

Year 11: William Darby and Zaya Gorial

Year 12: Luke Ivancic and Gian Cornale

This Friday, Josh McPherson (Year 7) and Ari Tjandra (Year 10) will be competing in the Grand Final at Marist North Shore. We wish them the best of luck as they compete against some of the best public speakers in NSW.

Hands gently sweep through the watery chill, Propelled forth, I travel to a land

where white horses playIn wild convulse, yet the mind of the searching surfer is still

Smooth, curved, impossible shapes of fluid, Casting themselves amongst bodies

of crushed shellEngaging in a well-choreographed dance,

In which the surfer seeks to enlist.

I sit on my board in nervous calm, Listening to the whip of the wind.

Caressing, enticing the spirits of the sea. Harness the beast, the wind whispers to me

I am familiar with such a whisper, and even now in the mercy of the water’s might,

The wind gloats, knowing I won’t resist.

Cheers of delight from fellow seekers, As they see me paddle into the looming shape. For one with the bravery to commit to even the

largest of pulls, Is braver than all in the world of wax and salt.

Rolling sounds, water pounding through my ears, A gnarly rush of power begins my glide of grace.

Sliding, in fluid race with the growling froth, Down the frowning face of the behemoth,

time slowing in my artful parallel as I board the train into shore

It is an aggressive, adrenaline fueled train and I am the driver

And despite its pricey fares, there you will always find me.

Hair slicked back, board grasped, sand plastering my face

Awaiting its arrival at my stop.
