We chatted for a minute about what he had been up to since leaving Marcellin at the end of last year. He spoke enthusiastically about the fact that he had just started at University and how much he was enjoying learning and university life. As we parted I asked him why he had made the trip to visit us. He said that he missed the place and just wanted to catch up with some of his past teachers. This encounter gave me pause to think about the strong sense of community and belonging, our boys experience whilst at Marcellin and the fact that for many there is almost a kind of grieving process they go through when they leave our College. I believe that one of the most important factors in supporting the growth and development of young people is the idea of community. Belonging to a community gives a child a sense of belonging, a strong sense of self and a sense of connection. As part of a community young people feel emotionally and physically safe and valued and they develop social skills and abilities which will assist them in becoming active and positive contributors to society. Marcellin College is a place where students, parents and staff develop an understanding of the significance of community not only as a vehicle for their personal growth but equally importantly as an entity which they can actively contribute to for the benefit of others. Last week at Marcellin our students experienced this sense of community both within the College and beyond. On Tuesday our students participated in the annual House Swimming Carnival held at Northcote Pool. Our students were provided the opportunity to compete for and support their House both in the water and by cheering from the sidelines. It is true that our students have a strong sense of belonging to the College. Equally they display a robust and loyal devotion to the House they belong to. This is obviously enhanced by the College’s Pastoral System which is a great strength of our school. More so it is encouraged and enriched by the enthusiastic and committed leadership of our House Coordinators, Pastoral Leaders and Assistants and by the passionate and thoughtful leadership displayed by our Senior House Captains, Vice Captains and other ardent and supportive Senior Students. I would like to thank all these people for providing such a powerful experience of community for our boys. I was walking through the main courtyard of our College the other day and came across a student from the

It is one thing to develop an appreciation and understanding of our place in the Marcellin community, it is another again to

recognise our role as members of and contributors towards the wider community. On Friday our senior VCAL students

provided valuable support for the wider community when they ventured out in support of Parks Victoria as they work to rebuild

and redevelop areas of bushland still feeling the effects of Black Saturday. Led by dedicated VCAL teacher Julie Toomey these

students gained an understanding of the issues faced in rejuvenating our native forests and the infrastructure involved whilst at

the same time providing practical support to this program led by Parks Victoria.

At Marcellin we recognise that we are also part of a global community which requires our understanding of and participation in.

On Wednesday we held an assembly at Marcellin at which we officially congratulated and farewelled a group of ten Year 9

students who will soon travel to China as part of the Victorian Young Leaders to China Program. These students will soon be

part of a group of students from eight Secondary Schools in Victoria who will live in China for six weeks participating in language

and cultural immersion programs and who will live in a Chinese Boarding School. The program aims at assisting these students

to not only develop their Chinese language skills but also develop an understanding of Chinese culture and their place as global

citizens in this important region of the world. I wish these students all the best as they embark on this life changing experience

and thank Sean Leubin and John Di Natale for their vision and hard work in providing this experience for our students. I would

also like to thank Rosemary Chapple, College Counsellor who has generously given of her time and talent to accompany these

students.

At this assembly we also acknowledged our Under 17 Cross Country Team who are about to compete on the world stage at the World Cross Country Championships which will shortly take place in Israel. On behalf of our College community I wish

these boys and their coach John Meagher all the best for a safe and successful trip.

On Tuesday 11 March, the students of Marcellin College participated in the Annual Inter-House Swimming Carnival held at Northcote Aquatic & Recreation Centre. The Swimming Carnival is always a highlight for the Marcellin College Community; however it was even more of a special occasion for the Year 7s and Year 12s for whom it would be their first and last Swimming Carnivals, respectively. The day began with the Senior boys and, as always, everyone was treated with an array of “interesting” costumes worn by the Year 12 boys. The Juniors resumed proceedings in the afternoon with enthusiasm and a willingness to compete which was great to see. The day was very enjoyable and was filled with great spirit thanks to the efforts of the student body who did an excellent job in making sure that whilst the rivalry and competitiveness between the Houses was strong, the participation and enjoyment was also prominent. It was great to see almost everyone get in the pool and earn valuable points for their houses at some stage during the day. As always, the Novelty Events and Beach Volleyball were popular with the students, with everyone eager to get involved in these. Beach Volleyball especially was a big hit, with crowds coming down to watch regardless of the year level. Thank you and congratulations to all the boys who participated in one or more of the events on the day as it highlights the determination and pride that these students have for their Houses. The overall results were:

Congratulations to Mr Atley and Kenny House for taking out the overall Champions, a great reflection on your House’s willingness to compete and participate. However, an honourable mention must go to Mannes who came first in the a Junior section and finished a narrow second in the Senior section. As always, the whole Student Body conducted themselves in a great manner and made the day a highly enjoyable one for all involved. A big thank you to our Sportsmaster, Mr Justin Abbott, and his team for organising such a huge event for the school and making it run as efficiently and effectively as possible. Written by Andrew Kay, 2014 Sport Captain 2014 SRC Leadership Day2014 SRC Leadership Day2014 SRC Leadership Day2014 SRC Leadership Day On Monday the 17th of March all 2014 SRC Members and Liturgy Captains attended a leadership day held at the College. As in past years, the event was a great success. The day was run primarily by the College Captains and Junior School Captains, and gave a chance for the SRC representatives to learn about their roles in more detail, as well as getting to know their fellow SRC members within the College.

This year, Marcellin was privileged to be addressed by Grace McClure, a mother, author, motivational speaker, model and Ironman Triathlete. Grace’s speech focused on writing down and achieving goals and using negative times in life to create positive ones. She also spoke about the Marist characteristics and how they apply to leadership.

Throughout Grace’s speech, she highlighted the importance of having goals. She asked us to write them down as doing so makes them more likely to happen and as a way to pinpoint them and follow up on them. Grace has overcome many obstacles in her life and we were amazed at what she had achieved. We were also very thankful that she had given up her time to speak to us.

After the presentation by Grace, we were joined by Chris Walsh, the Marlhes House Vice Captain of 2011. He talked to us about the importance of communication and told us about what he had been doing since he left Marcellin. He also spoke about the importance of giving back to the community. After Chris had spoken, current students Lucas Ibrahim, Jordan Paraskevas and Edward Matassoni spoke about their experiences at Marist Camp. They told us about their friendships with leaders from other Marist schools and how we can help the wider community by implementing some of the other schools’ ideas. The final sections of the day were the ‘Raps and Niggles’ and Social Justice sections where boys sat in House groups and came up with ideas on improving the school and raising awareness of their Social Justice Issue for 2014. Every student got something out of the day and we are thankful for the work that went into putting it together. All boys who attended the day are ready to lead the school in 2014. Three weeks ago I wrote that over the coming weeks I would highlight a number of programs and initiatives throughout our College that are examples of students, teachers and parents working in partnership to ensure all students reach their full potential. During this time I have noted how our Year 7 to 12 students are involved in a number of workshops facilitated by Elevate Education. The aim of these workshops are to complement the work of our teachers in developing sound study skills and work habits that aim to assist our boys in being able to manage their workload with regards to their study, homework, assignments and general day-to-day schooling. Last week I referred to the recent Year 10 Careerwise evening that provided our Year 10 students and their families the opportunity to further explore possible career options as they begin to make decisions about their futures. I also highlighted the Year 9 Parent Information Evening which included a presentation from Bill Jennings about the Time and Space program involving Year 9 students and their fathers that builds on similar programs offered in Year 7 and Year 8 by providing an opportunity for fathers and sons to connect and continue to build strong positive relationships. This week I would like to highlight the Year 10 PEAK Skills Study seminars that have been held on a Wednesday night for the past two weeks and conclude on Wednesday 26th March. These seminars are facilitated by Education Consultants, David and Rhonda Morrissey who provide practical advice to Year 10 students on how to improve their study habits. I would like to acknowledge the work of Mark Ashmore (Head of Senior School) who has organised these seminars to support our Year 10 students. The above examples are only a small number of ways we are working in partnership to provide every opportunity for your son to Strive For The Highest. One of the pillars of this partnership is Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences. These conferences provide an excellent opportunity for all key stakeholders of this partnership to meet to meet to discuss your son’s progress with reference to their Term 1 Interim Report. I encourage you to use the Parent/Teacher/Student Conferences as an opportunity to not only discuss your son’s progress but discuss ways in which we can further build this partnership. I also encourage you to use these conferences and Interim Reports as a platform to recognise and congratulate your son for his achievements this term. Next week I will outline how as a College and as a community we can recognise your son’s achievements this term. Furthermore, I will explain how we provide opportunities for students to develop and showcase and their talents and gifts.

Marcellin College strives to work in partnership with families, nurturing our students to grow from boys to fine young men. We empower

our students in our care to develop as individuals spiritually, academically, physically, culturally and socially with a determination to strive for

the highest with virtue and courage.

It has come to our attention that a number of our students have chosen to purchase shisha-pens, a form of e-cigarette. These devices are

part of an alarmingly growing trend amongst young people and health officials are concerned at the lack of understanding and awareness

amongst their users. Initial research indicates that young people choose to purchase and smoke these items as they can be purchased over

the counter or online and are marketed as not containing harmful chemicals. Health officials worry that this belief may encourage young

people to transition into the smoking of actual cigarettes or to try e-cigarettes and pens that contain nicotine.

Whilst we are working to educate your sons on the harmful use of these products, we ask that you engage them in a conversation about

what they represent and the potential future risks associated with their usage. Students who choose to use these items whilst in uniform

will receive a formal consequence as a result of bringing the College into disrepute. If you have any questions or concerns, you are

On Monday 24 March, students in 9.1 – 9.3 will depart for Thompson Valley to commence their Year 9 Camp Expedition week. The focus

of these camps are on the development of resilience, independence, team work and confidence. Boys have been involved in a number of

preparation sessions and workshops to allow them to achieve their personal best whilst away.

A reminder that all Outdoor Education camps are compulsory and non-attendance without appropriate documentation and prior notice

will result in a formal consequence and interview with the Head of School.

We wish all Year 9 students a safe and enjoyable week away.

This year the College has received positive feedback regarding student behaviour on public transport. Students have assisted passengers on

and off the train or bus, stood to allow passengers to sit, and have thanked the bus driver for their service.

Unfortunately, on occasions there have been concerns from the general public about the inappropriate conduct of a minority of boys on

public transport, particularly on buses. These concerns range from the use of poor language, inappropriate pushing, pressing emergency

buttons, unsafe and uncivil behaviour to neglecting basic courtesy, such as offering a seat to an elderly person, a pregnant women or a

disabled member of our community.

The expectation is that our students demonstrate respect and responsibility to build right relationships with their peers and people in the

public domain. It has become accepted practice for students, as a common courtesy, to offer their seat to elderly passengers, pregnant

women and/or disabled commuters. Students need to ensure that their bags don’t occupy any seats, particularly during peak travelling

times. Students should wait courteously until passengers have disembarked the bus or train before entering themselves.

The College has recently implemented a railing system at the bus shelter to ensure the safety of staff and students as they board the

College buses. This has ensured that students are now boarding the bus in a quiet and calm manner to ensure the safety of staff and

students.

The College reminds students that a condition of travel on the bus and train services that upon boarding a fare must be paid by touching on

and off a valid MYKI card. Travelling without validating a ticket is against the law and students can be fined by Authorised Officers.

Fieldwork is an important aspect of Geography and is necessary so students can observe and record real world geographical

phenomena studied in the classroom. On Friday 28th of February two teachers and thirteen Year 12 students undertook a

fieldwork activity to Federation Square and City Square. Both resources are local, but also are important in a regional context.

The students participated in a guided tour where architecture, land use and ecologically sustainable designs were discussed,

photographed and recorded. Students will use this information to write up a fieldwork report for their Unit 3 Outcome 2 SAC.

Marcellin Solidarity Immersion 2014

What is a Marcellin Solidarity Immersion Experience?

“……..mission is not just a matter of doing things for people. It is first of all a matter of

being with people, listening to and sharing with them.” (Mission for Today’s World)

Travelling on immersion is not to “help” others or teach others, rather it is for nothing less

than for the sake of changing lives – but not the changing of the lives of those to whom

we go; it’s for our own life change! This experience influences a fundamental change in

the way that I may view my own life – what I do, what I have, who I count as my friends,

what questions I ask myself, what issues I pay attention to, who and what I give my

allegiance. The overriding experience of all past immersions is that they are life

changing.
