Union members have remained presentin front of a downtown Maple Ridgegrocery store for the past three years.

Story and photos by Troy [email protected]

Nearly 40 months have passed since work-ers went on strike at the Maple Ridge ExtraFoods location – and there’s finally somehope of resolution.

Of the roughly 70 employees who mannedpicket lines starting Dec. 15, 2008, 37 remain.

On Tuesday, a few of them sat under amakeshift tent assembled in front of theDewdney Trunk Road store.

Since the strike started, they’ve seen fourChristmases go by, along with the 2010Vancouver Winter Olympics, some weddings, and the arrival of grandchildren.

They’ve endured bone-numbing cold snaps, stifling heat waves, and snow, hail, and rain-storms.

The striking workers are protesting wageand benefit rollbacks the store’s owners,Ontario-based Loblaw Companies Limited, are demanding in order to convert the storeinto a No Frills outlet.

According to a UFCW (United Food &Commercial Workers) report from 2009,Loblaw insisted on demanding the conces-sion-packed No Frills contract.

New Westminster-based UFCW said the NoFrills contract, if put in place, “would have

the effect of driving wage rates back by over25 years,” and essentially eliminating bene-fits.

Since the strike started, only the pharmacyhas operated inside the large store.

A small, homemade flyer, clipped to theexterior of the tent, lays out the union mem-bers’ concerns.

It says this isquickly becomingB.C.’s longest-run-ning picket linesince 1983, andthat the UFCWmembers arefighting for theright to a livingwage, includingfull-time pos-itions, job secur-ity, and “decentbenefits.”

Supporter Rex Rutherford said fromNovember 2009 to March 2010, he was partof a group called the ExFoods CommunityAction Team.

“We had public meetings, made CDs, putout petitions, which we delivered to Loblaw’sVancouver office, but still no results,”Rutherford said.

Cashier and UFCW union member JoannePrawdzik said meetings between the twosides are scheduled for April 16 to 20, involv-ing all Extra Foods and Super Valu stores inB.C. that are without contracts.

Loblaw Companies Limited released the

following statement: “We have resumednegotiations with the union however as thesenegotiations are ongoing, we are unable toprovide any further details at this time.”

Rutherford is happy to see negotiationsresuming.

“Two meetings so far, with more to come,”he said.

The local employ-ees have been livingoff picket pay whilesome have taken onpart-time work to helpmake ends meet.

“Our union’s beenreally supporting us,”Prawdzik added.

Rutherford, a self-described “concernedsenior and a veteran,”drafted a letter andmailed seven cop-ies of it to Loblaw

offices in Langley, Vancouver, Toronto, andBrampton, Ont., the UFCW Canada Union, and the manager of Extra Foods. In the letter,he gives his opinion on why this store shouldbe open again – and soon.

“Especially for myself, and other seniorswho live nearby, this store location is so con-venient,” Rutherford said.

He’s hoping others will support his causeby emailing their concerns to [email protected] writing to Loblaw Companies Ltd., 3189Grandview Hwy., Vancouver, B.C. V5M 2E9.

A retired school counsellor issurprised at how helpless people feelabout changing the system.

by Maria [email protected]

Retired Maple Ridge Secondary counsel-lor Andree D’Andrea said that MPs’ pen-sions are rich and she’d like an independ-ent review done of them.

But when she’s spoken with friendsabout the subject, she has sensed a feel-ing of helplessness with people sayingthey don’t know how to change it.

“One of the things that bothers me a lot[is] people feel there’s nothing they cando about it,” D’Andrea said.

This “flies in the face” of whatD’Andrea taught her students for 30 yearsin the public school system, that it is pos-sible to make a change.

“We as Canadians feel powerless,”D’Andrea said. “That’s not what democ-racy is all about.”

D’Andrea dropped off a petition withabout 100 names on it to MP RandyKamp’s office last Thursday asking forthe House of Commons to “abandonthe present political review and createan independent, apolitical review panel[whose] findings and recommendationsare to be released in its entirety to thepublic.”

The average MP pension is $78,000,D’Andrea pointed out.

“To the average Canadian that earns$45,000... that’s a lot of money,” shesaid.

When he receives a petition from hisconstituents, Kamp said he submits it tothe clerk’s office to have it certified “forpresentation in the House of Commons,”adding that he does that whether or nothe agrees personally with the intent of

the petition. After it’s certified, the MP is given the

opportunity to present it in Parliament. The original petition is sent to the

Office of Parliamentary Returns of thePrivy Council Office, which then arrangesfor the correct department to prepare aresponse within 45 days.

Kamp said he respects the right of con-stituents to organize petitions on issuesthey feel strongly about.

“I think the current MP pension plan isgenerous and I will support changes tomake it more equitable,” Kamp said, hint-ing that today’s budget announcementmight have something about the pensionissue in it.

“The government is reviewing publicservice pensions and will include MP pen-sions as part of that review,” Kamp said.“I think that’s an appropriate approach.”

Retired executive director Kelli Speirs ismoved by how the Maple Ridge recyclingdepot has grown in the past 40 years.by Roxanne [email protected]

When Kelli Speirs returned home fromMilwaukee after 15 years away, she was“burned out and broken,” and just staying withfamily in Maple Ridge long enough to search outa new job and home in Bellingham.

That’s when the self-proclaimed polyester-lov-ing suburban housewife from Wisconsin stumb-bled into a job at the Cottonwood Landfill thatwould unexpectedly grow into a career. And,at the same time it ignited a social conscienceabout the environment – and specifically recyc-ling – that she laughs about today.

“Recycling makes sense” became the man-tra for Speirs’ life, her actions quickly earningher a dubious title as Queen of the Dump, andlaunching her on an irreversible path.

That was 1982, when she first began workingfor the recycling depot. In subsequent years, sheraised up through the ranks as a staff member(and volunteer whenever the grant money randry) to the position of executive director of theRidge Meadows Recycling Society – one of thelargest and well-respected recycling organiza-tions in Canada.

Although she retired in 2009, Speirs is stilla regular visitor (dropping in at least once amonth with her recycling) at the depot shehelped grow. But she said it’s more the peopleand their passion, versus the facilities, that shegoes back to see and that she holds dear andcredits for the society’s development..

And she was incredibly honoured to sharesome of those memories of the past, thoughtsabout the present, and projections for the future

in a video about Ridge Meadows RecyclingSociety. The video was released this week onYouTube, in conjunction with the launch of thedepot’s new website and plans for the organiz-ation’s 40th anniversary celebrations being heldin conjunction with Earth Day on April 21 atMemorial Peace Park.

Ridge Meadows RecyclingSociety (RMRS) is celebrat-ing 40 years of making adifference in waste reduc-

tion this year. Anniversary activ-ities will focus on the past, presentand future of recycling in the com-munity.

RMRS kicked off the yearwith a historical exhibit atthe Maple Ridge Museumcapturing the history oftheir role in recycling andsupported work programs. The exhibit is on displayuntil the end of April.

Celebrate Earth Day 2012,a family-friendly celebrationat Memorial Peace Park on April 21will also focus on the anniversary. It is coordinated by the society andthe CEED Centre, and features theHaney Farmers’ Market, commun-ity partners and environmentalorganizations.

Following Earth Day, RMRS willlook to the next generation andseek out up-and-coming environ-mental and recycling enthusiasts. In partnership with the MapleRidge-Pitt Meadows TIMESnewspaper, RMRS will launch a40-under-40 promotion to find40 young environmentalist to behonoured in a special insert duringWaste Reduction Week in October.

The recycling society sees this40-year milestone as an opportun-ity to continue to inspire, educate, and raise awareness in the com-munity about the importance ofrecycling and waste reduction. TheSociety is looking for the next gen-

eration of recyclers and environ-mentalists to lead the way to zerowaste.

This week, the society launcheda commemorative video featuringfounding members and staff ofRMRS who depict the developmentof the recycling model that is

unique to the community. The video provides

insight into the philosophybehind the society’s dis-tinctive approach and looksat both the past and futureof recycling in the commun-ity.

The video, produced byGrant Baldwin Videography,

is posted on YouTube and on theRidge Meadows Recycling Society’swebsite www.rmrecycling.org,which has also been revamped tomark the 40th anniversary.

Along with the commemorativevideo, stop-motion videos havebeen produced that visually illus-trate the various streams of recyc-lables accepted in the local pro-gram and how to properly sort andprepare them.

This method is at the heart ofthe RMRS model and it’s what hasmade local recycling a unique suc-cess.

The new website is a visuallyappealing platform that integratessocial media – Twitter #!/rmrecyc-ling, Facebook http://facebook.com/RMRecycling, and YouTubehttp://www.youtube.com/ridge-meadowsrecycles, with informationabout programs, services, and thefuture of recycling.

Opinion

A rather inspiring storyappeared in the March 20 edi-tion of this paper about a PittMeadows man going on a fund-raising walk to Horseshoe Bayand back to raise money forthe Down Syndrome ResearchFoundation and the LowerMainland Down SyndromeSociety, both of which helppeople with Down syndrome livehealthy, productive lives in spiteof an extra chromosome on the21st pair.

Howie English and his wifelearned that their new daughter had Down syn-drome and “immediately envisioned a life of seg-regation, limitations, and struggle” compoundedby a heart condition that is not uncommonamong newborns with DS.

I’m certainly not pretentious enough to secondguess your doctor, but if the condition is AVC,in which there is as hole in the canal connectingtwo chambers of the heart, it has been treatedbefore with medication and surgery.

In any event, if you had read any of numer-ous columns that I’ve written about the AngelAndrew, my son, who has DS and is probablythe best thing that has ever happened to me –along with his sister, of course, who doesn’t relyon me nearly as much, except for money andtransportation – you could’ve given me a calland I would have referred you to the Langridgefamily and their 20-something son Brent whohas DS, or the Wasans and their 20-somethingson, David, who has DS, or any of several otherfamilies who have been blessed with childrenwith Down syndrome and will tell you how posi-tively their lives have been affected by that extrachromosome, and how much they have learnedfrom these kids – tolerance, compassion, forgive-ness – and how much joy they have brought tothe family.

The only struggle for me is coping with some-one who is happy all the time.

Forget that crap about segregation and limita-tions, Howie, because we, the families of DSindividuals, have arrived. We are integrated,

main-streamed. We have teach-ing assistants and advocates, andtheir work over the years hasguaranteed that persons with DSare no longer institutionalized orseparated from the population inschool or at large.

We’re out there. You and themissus should come to SpecialOlympics bowling some Thursdayafternoon and witness the col-lective pleasure of the specialneeds community at play, amongthem the aforementioned Downsyndrome cohort. No longer

Mongoloids or retards, no, we are the intellec-tually disabled, and who ain’t these days?

Oh sure there are still bullies about and the ‘R’word is used in a derogatory manner, but over-all, we’re swimming with the Normoids.

Many of us have had medical issues with ourkids, but not so different, I would speculate, from the population at large; granted, we arelimited, some of us may never be prime minister, but we fit in, we contribute.

So chill out, Howie, don’t panic; raise money ifyou will, but don’t let the family suffer becausethis wonderful little girl has come into your lifeand you feel you have to work your butt off tomake sure she has a life. We’re here for you,Howie: we’re dancing, and bowling, and playingsoftball – and if you want, we’ll all come over tothe house with our boys, just so you can see that20 years down the road little Rebecca is goingto be just fine. She couldn’t have been born at abetter time or in a better community.

Ergo: Andrew and I went to the Chimo Poolin Coquitlam recently to offer our support to theBetty Rosenau-coached Ridge Meadows SpecialO swim team which, it turns out, comportedthemselves quite well and came away with sev-eral prizes. Betty, who prefers the more regal“Elizabeth,” is a political junkie of the first order, seeking to replace Mike Sather as the local MLAnext election. And, if her management of theswim team is any indication, she shouldn’t haveany trouble backstroking her way through thepolitical pool.

Our View

Everyone justwants to help

One thing about labour disputes ofwhich we can always be sure: whetherthe acrimony escalates to strikes orlock-outs, or just levels out at “work-to-rule” or “job action,” it’s never aboutpersonal gain for workers or for employ-ers – it’s always about better service forclients, customers, children, patients…or whoever else may be affected by thecombatants’ assaults on each other.

However it may look from theoutside of the dispute, those directlyinvolved will assure us all that it’s neverreally about them, but about how theywant only what’s best for the rest of us.

Teachers cut back services to childrenand their parents not for higher wagesand better working conditions, butbecause those perks would ultimatelytranslate into better learning conditionsfor our precious children.

Meanwhile, their employer – ourgovernment – legislates onerous condi-tions under which teachers are forced to“cool off”… because the legislators areconcerned only about the children.

Now B.C.’s anesthesiologists arethreatening to withdraw services – andthe government appears intent ongoading them on… but once again, ifmedical procedures are put on hold orthe public at large is put to any minorinconvenience, it’s not for any personalgain on either side, but because they’reall fighting for what’s best for all of us.

Soon more government workers willstruggle on our behalf, while the gov-ernment struggles back… on our behalf.

The occurs and recurs in the privatesector – with the government readilystepping in “on our behalf,” as the fedshave recently done to put the kiboshon labour plans to enhance the public’stravel opportunities through Air Canada.

Perhaps it’s time to find a mediatorwho can go beyond appointments toindividual disputes, and can do whatreally would be good for the public atlarge: find a way to fix a broken system.

Dear Editor,With the current trend of attacks on

unionized workers, I felt the need toremind people of how our society hasbenefited from their efforts over the pastcentury.

Just remember who it was that foughtfor an eight-hour work day, health andbenefit plans that help our children, andsafety regulations that protect our work-ers. It was not the corporate elites whomake millions sitting in their boardrooms, speculating on how to increase their prof-its at our expense.

What we’re seeing today is a desper-ate attempt by ruling elites to reversethe gains made by the working peoplewho’ve build our great nation over thepast century. They are no longer ableto exploit the Third World nations asthey’ve done in the past, so they’re com-

ing back after us, the unionized workers, like teachers, hospital workers, etc., toget their pound of flesh.

This is a well-orchestrated policy thatis being implemented by right-wingerslike Harper and gang. And by the way,it comes from the Bilderberger ultra-secret sessions, the annual gathering ofthe people who truly rule our world, thepower elites. They are the ones who helpto subvert our democratic process byhaving our elected politicians, who arebeholden to them, enact their policies, and not what the people want.

Our democratic process has beenhijacked, and that includes our unionrights, and we need to get it back again.I’m for the teachers and all workers whoare fighting for a better world for ourfamilies and children. We will fight on!

Dear Editor,I think Mr. Wallis forgot to look into

the mirror, because then he would nevercome up with such an irresponsible letter[Too easy to blame someone else, March20 Letters, TIMES].

Not going deeper in the circumstancesof this incident [Ballerina left crying out-side pub, March 15, TIMES], the fact isthat a local pub located next to the HaneyStation failed with its actions. Any excuseis lame.

Mr. Wallis is talking about not blamingother people, which he definitely does,

otherwise he wouldn’t come up with sug-gestions about how to solve the problemsof this family.

Not all people have a cellphone or canalways make arrangements with friends, family, or neighbours, and I think that isnone of our business.

The only thing that comes up for me isthat we should care for each other, andnot look away if help is needed.

Dear Editor,I am a parent, taxpayer,

and small business owner, and I am not fooled by thegovernment’s spin on “nomoney,” as many B.C.ersseem to be.

It’s all about priorities.A stadium roof and a raisefor themselves doesn’tseem to be a problem. They have saved morethan $200,000,000 peryear for 10 years by tak-ing away needed resourcesfrom your children.

The government has spitin the face of the SupremeCourt ruling that their pastlegislation was illegal andhad to be repealed.

In Bill 22 they repealed it

but, in the next paragraph, reinstated it. Who are theyaccountable to?

I have been fighting forimprovements to publiceducation for 30 years, and it is all gone.

Maple Ridge-MissionMLA Marc Dalton seemsto think that I need theBCTF to tell me I shouldbe angry.

Those who think I haveit so good can have myjob. I did not inherit it orwin it in a lottery.

Teachers each investabout $50,000 to get theeducation needed to teach. They are in school for fiveto six years, then anotherfive years or more to get

a job. This is why we arenow ninth in Canada forsalaries, in the provincewith the highest cost ofliving.

How would you explainthat to your childrenwho want to be teachers?Spend a fortune in tuitionfees and 10 years of yourlife, and you can have ajob where you make lessand less every year.

I do it because I love towork with children, andthey desperately needadvocates for better educa-tion, fighting poverty, andgiving a place of safetyand caring for so many ofour abused and neglectedyouth.

This government hasgutted the education sys-tem and demoralized thepeople who have to makeit work.

Then they have thenerve to go to China topromote this degradedsystem to encourage moreinternational students tofurther add to less resour-ces for your kids. Themoney they pay does notbenefit my classroom.

You are either on theside of an abusive govern-ment or on the side ofyour children, but it can-not be both.

Software costs add to taxesDear Editor,

It is interesting to note that our governments providefor free a written form for reporting income, but no taxpreparation software.

The cost of software availability online at the CRA sitewould certainly be offset by savings realized when tax-payers file electronically. Forcing taxpayers to pay pri-vate software companies is akin to an extra tax.

It would be interesting to find out how much the soft-ware providers contribute to political parties.

Maybe everyone should file on a written form oneyear. Bet you the cost of manually processing some 20million reports would convince the government to do thelogical thing.

Children’s Wish Month will becelebrated on Saturday at the PittMeadows Arena Complex.

by Maria [email protected]

The Taylor family from Pitt Meadowswill be at a celebration of the Children’sWish Foundation at their hometownarena on Saturday, as they start the pro-cess of giving back to a foundation thathas reached out to their daughter.

Emily Taylor, 7, has a pacemaker andis “okay” now, her mother Mandy Taylorsaid. But when she was three, the fam-ily realized something was very seriouswhen she started fainting.

At first, her doctor thought she washaving seizures. But in October 2009,Emily fainted at school, and her par-

ents ended up taking her to Children’sHospital where they realized she had aserious heart condition.

Emily seemed to have the same condi-tion her father, who got a pacemaker atthe age of 28, and the doctors realizedher heart was actually stopping.

Her mother calls Emily “an amazingpatient” saying she is a “strong per-son,” noting that she only cried once atChildren’s Hospital.

The family has been involved with theChildren’s Heart Network so that Emilycan connect with other children withheart issues – her mother said she hopesthat this will make her feel “normal.”

As the family was finding out what waswrong with Emily and getting the pace-maker put in, the seriousness of the situa-tion didn’t hit Mandy. It wasn’t until afterwhen she realized the Emily’s life hadbeen in danger.

...contineud from page A10When someone at one of the

heart network’s events suggestedto Mandy that she contact theChildren’s Wish Foundation torequest a wish for her daughter, shewas taken aback, thinking it was forchildren with terminal illnesses.

Her reaction was “I’m not going totake away from someone who needsit more.”

But the Children’s WishFoundation also grants wishes tochildren who have serious illnesses, and a heart that was stopping was avery serious matter.

Emily has fully recovered and isnow contemplating what wish shewould like to have granted.

She has been bouncing aroundideas, for example, swimming withthe dolphins, Disney World inFlorida, and Hawaii. Her ideas varybetween roller coasters and rides ora beach holiday.

“I’m waiting for her to come to meand say I want to do this,” Mandy

said, adding that she wants it to be“her wish... not something I’ve putin her head.”

Having a child with a serious med-ical condition puts life into perspec-tive, Mandy said.

“Now we just really appreciatewhat we have,” she said. “Life isshort.”

Now that Emily has a pacemakerand is doing well, the family is readyto start reaching out to others.

“That’s where we’re at – we wantto give back,” Mandy said, adding, however, that she’ll never be able togive back completely.

The Taylor family plans to be atthe Ice Carnival at Pitt MeadowsArena Complex this Saturday from2:30 to 5 p.m., which is the finale ofthe Children’s Wish Month.

The community is invited to theevent for a minimum $5 donation(children under three are free). Allfunds raised will help grant wishesof children living with life-threaten-ing illnesses.

Last year, Pitt Meadowsscored the biggest dropin electricity consumptionacross the province dur-ing Earth Hour – 5.7 percent drop compared to theprovincial average of 1.8per cent.

This year they want tobeat that record.

Two local artists, LillianIreland and Rob Dramer, have written a song aboutEarth Hour, and will leadthe parade with a sing-a-long.

“This is the first com-munity event about EarthHour that we’ve organized. We invite individuals tojoin in with their flash-lights and promote com-munity spirit by singingalong or playing acousticinstruments,” said PattiRear, co-chair of the greenleadership team and legis-lative services clerk at theCity of Pitt Meadows.

by Chris ConroySpecial to the TIMES

Sometimes life is just too stressful. When that happens, who wants toread something heavy and thoughtprovoking?

Instead, we reach for lighter reads. So, in honour of escapist reading, the

staff at Maple Ridge Library divulge theirguilty pleasures. We hope you enjoy them.

Currently I’m reading Peter Robinson’sBefore the Poison. It’s one of his rarenon-Inspector Banks books. In it ChrisLowndes returns to England, hishome country, and buys an oldhouse in the Yorkshire Dales.

A recent widower and musiccomposer for Hollywood films,Chris finds himself obsessedwith a murder that happenedin the house 60 years ago.Dr. Ernest Fox was murderedone evening following a din-ner party. His wife, Grace Fox,was subsequently convicted ofthe crime and executed. Chrisdoesn’t quite know why he’s sodrawn to the story of Grace Fox, only thathe must uncover if she was wrongly con-victed or not.

Robinson is also a favourite of Denise’s.In fact, the mystery genre figures in manyof the staff’s escapist reads. Denise alsorecommends Donna Leon’s novels.

Centred in Venice, Leon’s inspector isCommissario Guido Brunetti. Watch forLeon’s new book Beastly Things to hitFraser Valley library shelves this spring(but you can put a hold on it now).

Other likes are Margaret Manon,Elizabeth George – who writes theInspector Lynley series – and the prolific

J.A. Jance and her numerous series.Tina says for pure “mind candy” you

can’t beat Janet Evanovich’s StephaniePlum novels. Barb M. seconds that.

Dorothee highly recommends LindaCastillo’s Amish crime thriller series. KateBurkholder returns as the chief of policeto the small Amish town of Painters Mill,a town she had left years earlier after aterrifying incident.

In the first book, Sworn to Silence,Burkholder is the seemingly perfect personto solve a series of murders that to pointto a serial killer once again ravaging the

small town.Pray for Silence and Breaking

Silence follow. Castillo’s latestin the series, Gone Missing isexpected to be published just intime for summer reading.

Now for something complete-ly different, Stiff: The CuriousLife of Human Cadavers byMary Roach is Debby’s pick.

“It may sound a little weird,”said Debby, “but it’s fascinat-ing and well written.” Roach isa science writer and the book

came out of her Salon.com column. Stiff isa historical, and humorous, look at whatcadavers have done for the human race.

Staying with non-fiction Linda is enjoy-ing books about mountaineering in theHimalayas.

“I’m fascinated by what makes thesemen and women tick. Why do they putthemselves at such great risk?” Lindarecommends notable authors such as JonKrakauer, Conrad Anker, Ed Viesturs, andDavid Breashears. You’ll find books by allof these authors at Fraser Valley libraries.

Tumia Knott,Chief MarilynGabriel, andKevin Kellywere on theKwantlen landswith consultantSteve Zulianion Tuesday.

Maria Rantanen/TIMES

...continued from page A1He was at the future

mall site on Tuesdayafternoon along withKeith McRae, partner withPDG, and members of theKwantlen band councilincluding Chief MarilynGabriel.

The goal is to start con-struction by the end of2012 and open as early asfall 2013, or in the spring2014.

The rest of the Kwantlenlands have also been dedi-cated for use, but 40 percent of the 309 acres willremain protected and man-aged natural open space.

Four sections have beendedicated for residentialuse in the Kwantlen IR5Land Use Plan, which willprobably be leased for resi-dential development.

The Kwantlen FirstNation want to raise theirprofile in Maple Ridge,Knott said.

“Because of our smallpopulation, we don’t havea strong presence in MapleRidge,” Knott said.

The mall developmentwill provide employmentfor the Kwantlen people, but it is also about pro-moting their culture aswell.

“Our nation has beengrowing in our capacity tobecoming involved in pro-jects like this... develop-ment projects that cansustain our people in thefuture,” Knott said.

The mall will be “verybeneficial to our people,”Gabriel said.

The mall will retainesthetic elements thatreflect its First Nationowners, and the culturalcentre will be a place forKwantlen artisans to dis-play their work.

A Kwantlen cemeteryis on the westside of thefuture mall, and the cul-

tural centre would mostlikely be next to it.

Property DevelopmentGroup has worked withother First Nations groupsto build malls on reserveland, for example, theyhave recently completed amall in Chilliwack, EagleLanding, and are workingon a mall in Tsawwassen.

They have also part-nered with the WestbankFirst Nation to build theLake Okanagan ShoppingCentre.

Jobs to come with mall development

A local lawn bowling club will host itsseason opener this Sunday.

by Sylver [email protected]

George Cubiss used to play crown green bowl-ing in England before he came to Canada 10years ago.

Now the avid lawn bowler is one of about a100 members of the Maple Ridge Lawn BowlingClub who are looking forward to opening daythis Sunday.

At noon, Maple Ridge Mayor Ernie Daykinwill bowl the first bowl to open the season andeveryone is welcome to come and watch, saidCubiss, the club’s games chair.

“The mayor comes every year to deliver thefirst bowl,” Cubiss explained.

“And then we walk around the green with apiper, play a couple of games, followed by a pot-luck supper” he added.

Cubiss said the Maple Ridge Lawn BowlingClub, at 11445 232nd St., is know as “the bestbowling club in the Vancouver and district area.”

They have even produced a Canadian lawnbowling champion in Duncan Holness.

They are one of four clubs to have Henseliteartificial bowling carpet, all other clubs use realgrass.

“Looking after real grass is a science, and veryexpensive,” Cubiss said.

The artificial surface, which gets vacuumedand swept, cost the club $180,000 about fiveyears ago.

“We are very lucky to have a green team tolook after it. Everything here is volunteer,” saidlong-time memberNita Clark.

“People per-ceive this as aseniors’ game, butin fact, it’s funfor all ages,” saidCubiss.

Future competi-tions include theopen men’s tripleson April 22, prov-incial men’s onJune 8, 9, and 10,and provincialladies June 11,12, and 13.

Tim Stephens' Astral Reflections April 1-7, 2012★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Aries March 21 - April 19: Your energy, charismaand clout remain high, and now, at last (Wednesdayonward) you can charge ahead effectively, give orders, ask favours, impress the right/key people, and startimportant projects. (In doing so, remember that yourluck is high in earnings and sales, so a good projectwould be monetary: to earn more, sell, buy – “lock in”money favour by starting a job, business, etc. now.) Agovernment or similar obligation (taxes) hangs overyou – solve this. Romance calls Sunday/Monday –answer! Tackle chores midweek. Relationships excite, confuse and climax, Thursday on.Taurus April 20-May 20: Lie low, rest andcontemplate. Wednesday onward, plan futureactions. This day ends recent delays, mistakesand indecisiveness. Lie low, rest and contemplate.Wednesday onward, plan future actions. This dayends recent delays, mistakes and indecisiveness.Your money picture looks better now into earlyAugust. It’s an excellent time to seek employment, especially before mid-May and after late June. Settleinto home Sunday/Monday. Romance, pleasure, beauty and creativity lure you Tuesday/Wednesday.Tackle chores, Thursday/Friday. Someone wants youand doesn’t want you, Saturday.Gemini May 21-June 20: Delays, mistakes andindecision end – technically Wednesday, but it cantake you awhile to get back in the rhythm. By April10 you’ll be fully confident and ready to act, and bythe 13th (onward) your hopes will return solidly. Thatleaves the present week – despite some uncertainties, you are beginning to radiate a new, gentle charm;this is the beginning of a four-month phase duringwhich others (Aries? Aquarius?) will be attracted toyou, even as mate material. You’re back on the rise,Gemini! (But don’t push it before September.) Besttravel day: Sunday. Love day: Friday.

Cancer June 21-July 22: Recent delays andmistakes end. They affected your career, prestige, legal, travel and intellectual pursuits. Your ambitionscome into sharp focus – be ready to act on themnext week. (This week is best spent reconnoitring, planning.) Your inner life grows sweeter over the nextfour months – old allies return, things go well withgovernment links, and you luxuriate in moments ofsolitude. It’s a good phase to make family and propertydecisions. You might end things with a Libra – to bothyour benefit. Money’s lucky Sunday/Monday – chaseit. Midweek’s friendly. Caution Thursday p.m.Leo July 23-Aug. 22: There’s always a reason. When you contemplate the last 15 years and the lovedisappointments that might have occurred, rememberthis. When you contemplate the next 15 years, includetwo things: 1) sex gets better; 2) past deception ends. The four months ahead boost your popularity, yourhappiness and playfulness. Someone’s flirting! A ratherbig wish involving travel or earnings will come true.Thisweek, recent delays and indecisions end (technically,Wednesday morning). Your energy and charismasoar Sunday/Monday. Chase money midweek. Travel, friends late week. Be home, Saturday.Virgo Aug. 23-Sept. 22: Delays and mistakes(especially in relationships) end Wednesday. Nowforward, chase new investments (or solve debtproblems) seek intimacy with someone compelling, charge into lifestyle changes, commitments, researchand (health, etc.) diagnosis. You’re going to take somesignificant action in one or more of these sectorsbefore July. Tuesday begins four months of unusualfavour from higher-ups, parents and VIPs – proposea project or two. You might be promoted. Lie low, research and plan Sunday/Monday. Your energy andcharisma surge midweek. Money needs cautionThursday/Friday.

Libra Sept. 23-Oct. 22: Delays and indecision end. You’re free to proceed with new ventures, especiallyin work and relationships. The 15 months aheadpromote success with members of the oppositesex. (Sweet understandings now to August, cheerfulagreement September to June 2013. Marriagepossible – but better if he/she shows after July3.) These 15 months also boost your success inlegal, international, higher education, cultural, publishing and far travel zones. Your popularity risesSunday/Monday. Someone flirts. Retreat, rest andcontemplate midweek. Your energy, charisma surgeThursday/Friday.Scorpio Oct. 23-Nov. 21: Tackle chores.Ambition’slucky Sunday/Monday. Recent delays and mistakesend. If an old flame reappeared lately, now it endsor proceeds. Huge love and sexual attractions loom, this April right into June 2013. Lust and love, lust andmarriage, are different things, with different motives.Great good luck and karmic “tests” mingle deeplyhere: so proceed, but realize everything’s complex.Listen to clues, and check with your intuition. Onething’s fairly simple: marrying (or divorcing) is luckyuntil June, and quite unlucky (bad karma) fromSeptember 2012 to February 2014.Sagittarius Nov. 22-Dec. 21: Recent delays andindecision melt away; you’re free to advance. LovingVenus enters your sign of partnership and relocationTuesday, to stay until early August. Others will treatyou with grace and affection. In addition, luckyJupiter enters this same zone in June, to stay for ayear. Love and luck! Yet difficult karma inhabits thisarea until Aug. 30. I’d wait. Partnering, relocation, fame, public interfacing, litigation – all might bea sweet trap to August. Sunday/Monday is wise, loving. Be ambitious midweek. Popularity, optimismThursday/Friday. Retreat Saturday.

Capricorn Dec. 22-Jan. 19: Delays, mistakes andconundrums end (technically, Wednesday). Soon, too,a barrier will fall in a legal, educational, publishing, fame or international situation, perhaps one involvingreal estate, a family member, or “putting an end” tosomething. Messages that had been delayed or lostshow up now. Your work scene grows much morepleasant to August and health improves – still, difficultkarma creeps through these zones, so accept gladlywhat comes, but don’t pursue more. (This summerbegins a huge increase in work for you, to mid-2013.)Climb a career ladder Thursday/Friday.Aquarius Jan. 20-Feb. 18: Delays, mistakes endWednesday. Fifteen years of indecision is also endingnow. Little by little, every month, every year for thenext 15, you will grow more firm in your convictionsand choices. Drug/alcohol use will abate. Back tonormal. Travel, talk, writing, details, errands surroundyou in April – get going! Your romantic, creative, speculative and child-oriented zones glow withsweet affection Tuesday – for four months. In June, even more good luck comes to these, for a year. It willbe hard to escape love! But a subtle trap might existhere until September: be patient.Pisces Feb. 19-March 20: Personal indecisionand outer delays end Wednesday, but it can take youa week or so to firmly find your feet and directionagain. Next week (especially April 9, late, and 10) willbe a superb time to chase money and prestige. Thisweek, money’s a prime theme also, but a partner or afinancial opportunity might be unstable, reluctant ordelayed: be patient. Your home, family, security andproperty zone fills with affection and luck Tuesday toAugust. And an even bigger luck comes this June, tomid-13. Still, karmic traps might lurk: be patient untilSeptember. Mysteries, late week.
