Volunteering at the North FraserTherapeutic Riding Association is fulfilling, says its program coordinator.

by Troy [email protected]

Like tiny pebbles, driving rain pelted themetal roof of North Fraser Therapeutic RidingAssociation’s indoor arena on a bitingly coldrecent Tuesday afternoon.

With each breath, puffs of air blew out ofthe nostrils of the Norwegian Fjord “Rupert”as he carried Liam, a new rider taking part inhis first lesson at the NFTRA’s centre in ruralMaple Ridge.

The cold didn’t seem to affect Liam as heand Rupert ambled around the arena.

Guiding horse and rider were volun-teers Tania Teixeira, Lynne Bradley, AnneJonatschick, and Maureen Newton, whoseroles with the NFTRA are crucial.

And more like them are needed. With the NFTRA’s spring horseback riding

program starting, the association is seekingvolunteers to help groom and tack its sevenhorses, and to lead or side walk with theriders during their lessons.

“We can’t be a successful program with-out them,” said Jonatschick, president of

the NFTRA board and a parent of one of theriders. Her son Riley, 11, who has musculardystrophy, has been riding at the centre forthe past six years.

The association offers equine activities forchildren and adults with physical, emotional, and developmental challenges.

Situated at its current site on 254th Streetsince 1998, the NFTRA is the only thera-peutic riding centre north of the Fraser Riverand helps clients from Mission to NorthVancouver.

NFTRA currently has 86 riders in its pro-gram, using horses who work between six andseven hours per week.

The riders usually take partin three- to 10-week sessionsduring the year.

“The riders may continueindefinitely but there aresome changes between ses-sions with some riders leav-ing and new ones comingin,” program coordinator GayConn said. “We always havea wait list of riders.”

The sheer volume of riders makes volunteersthe driving force behind the NFTRA’s success, according to Conn.

“When you consider that one rider mightneed three volunteers in order to have a les-son, we rely on about 70 volunteers a week,”

Conn said. “That’s a ton of volunteers.”Some volunteers donate two hours of their

time each week at the NFTRA, others arethere the equivalent of two full days. One haslogged close to 1,906 hours at the centre.

“This volunteer is also a rider in our pro-gram which is something we are really proudof,” Conn said. “That some of our riders arealso able to volunteer for us is unique.”

The payoff is straightforward: volunteers arehelping to improve the quality of lives, Connnoted.

“You just can’t come out here and [not] beamazed at what people overcome, and their

ability to participate in whatthey’re doing” Conn said.

“For a lot of riders, they reallyneed to trust the people aroundthem, so they like the samepeople working with them, andthey develop a relationship,”Conn said.

NFTRA’s existence relies onfundraising and donations.

The association also receivesannual gaming funds from the province, whichhelps keeps costs down for riders and theirfamilies.

To volunteer with the NFTRA, call 604-462-7786 or email [email protected] for further infor-mation or to sign up for an orientation.

The historic building has beena feature on the Maple Ridgelandscape since the early 1900s.

by Amy [email protected]

One hundred seventy-six signa-tures on a petition to save AlbionHall is just the beginning, accord-ing to president of the Peace TwigFundraising Association, WendyCook.

She dropped off the list at theMaple Ridge council chambers onMonday morning and hopes it willpersuade the councillors and MayorErnie Daykin to bring the matterback before council.

“The council hadn’t really knownhow much of the community usedit,” said Cook.

The hall was transferred to theDistrict of Maple Ridge’s ownershipat the end of March, and it will betorn down as bringing it up to muni-cipal standards would be too costly, according to Kelly Swift, generalmanager of community developmentand parks and recreation.

However, Cook has a better idea– she would like to buy it herself, and turn it into a guild hall.

“A personal, private individualcan do what they want,” she said,“because it’s a heritage building,”meaning she would not have tobring it up to municipal standards.

“It’s a real piece of our heritage,”he added. “I’ve saved buildingsworse than that in Vancouver andall over.”

Cook would like to see the build-ing used as an Elizabethan-styleguild hall, where artists can use itfor a low cost.

“I was going to do it personally to

show people thatsomething can be done,” she said.

The building was assessed at$315,500, and council had decidedthis amount, less the cost of demoli-tion and legal bills, will be set asidefor a “future community gatheringplace” that will be accessible to theAlbion neighbourhood.

Cook has no problem bidding forthe property and is prepared to paywhat the District paid for the trans-fer.

Cook said the petition will beavailable for people to sign startingApril 20 at The ACT, during the runof Anne.

Advanced polling andmail-in ballots givevoters more options.

by Maria [email protected]

Voter information cardsshould have arrived inmailboxes last week.

If not, Elections Canadaencourages residents toregister as soon as possibleto make election day onMay 2 as smooth as pos-sible.

Voter information cardsinclude information aboutwhere and when to vote. However, voters shouldlook at the informationcarefully, said SusanFriend, spokesperson forElections Canada, to seethat their personal infor-mation is correct.

The local ElectionsCanada office is at #510-22470 Dewdney Trunk Rd.

Advance polling willtake place on Friday, April22, Saturday, April 23, andMonday, April 25 fromnoon to 8 p.m. The loca-tion of the advance poll ison each voter’s informa-tion card.

Local residents whohaven’t received a voterinformation card shouldcall Elections Canadaoffice at 1-800-463-6868 toregister.

Advance registrationshould be done by April26. Voters, however, areable to register and voteon election day, but it willbe smoother if registra-tion is done in advance,

according to Friend.A brochure is

being sent to everyhousehold in Canada, which Elections Canada iscalling “reminder cards.”They include the type ofidentification that can beused to register for voting.

Voting by special ballotis another option to makeone’s voice heard. It is anoption for all voters, butit is especially useful foremergency workers whomight be called away onelection day, or for voters

who will be travelling onelection day.

To vote by special ballot, one must be registered byApril 26. A special ballotcan be downloaded fromthe Elections Canada web-site or picked up from thelocal office.

Voters can vote at theoffice when they pick upthe package or mail it in.However, the special ballothas to be in by the time

polls close at 7 p.m. onMay 2.

“The onus is on thevoter to get that vote in,”Friend said.

During the last elec-tion, 30,000 people in B.C.voted by special ballot.

However, if a voter picksup a special ballot, theyare marked on the voters’list as having received theballot and cannot voteeither in the advance pollor on election day.

A Maple Ridge resident noticed anelderly woman had not picked up anynewspapers for a few days last week.

by Amy [email protected]

Lawren Mallory is out and about deliv-ering newspapers for Postmedia beforemost of us are even awake.

But even at 3:30 a.m., his instinct wassharp enough to know that somethingwas wrong at a customer’s home.

“It was Tuesday that I noticed the ladyhad not been picking up her papers,” saidMallory, who delivers the Sun, Province, and National Post, sister papers of theTIMES. “I’ve had the route a little over ayear now and she’s never gone away onholiday or stopped her paper.”

Papers had been piling up outside her

Maple Ridge home since Saturday, soMallory phoned his distribution managerJeremy Taylor.

“He called me,” said Taylor, “and Icalled the RCMP non-emergency line.”

Police were able to find a neighbourwith a key, and when they entered thehome they found the elderly residenthad fallen the previous Saturday and hadbeen laying there ever since.

Taylor said the homeowner is “doingok” and is still in the hospital.

Mallory is happy the woman is gettingcare, and that he was able to do his part.

“I go by at 3:30 in the morning,” hesaid. “The only reason I knew she wasan elderly lady, and she lived by herself,is that at Christmas time she asked me toring her doorbell because she wanted togive me a card and a tip.”

“If that hadn’t happened, I probablywouldn’t have thought twice about it,” headded.

The five-year mandate for theassociation representing downtownbusinesses ends on Dec. 31.by Teija [email protected]

Maple Ridge council will put forward arecommendation to renew the mandate ofthe Maple Ridge BIA after a presentationin council workshop Monday morning.

The Downtown Maple Ridge BusinessImprovement Association currently oper-ates under a five-year mandate thatexpires Dec. 31, 2011.

“I would say [council] were very posi-tive about the presentation,” said BIAexecutive director Ineke Boekhorst afterthe meeting.

“I think there’s a lot of things we cando in partnership with the District of

Maple Ridge and many other organiza-tions.”

Boekhorst said the presentation waspart of the association’s annual review.Part of the discussion centered aroundrenewing the mandate, and the staffrecommendation to renew it would be“fabulous for the BIA,” she said.

Among members of the association, support for the continued existance of theBIA is strong, according to Boekhorst.

“We have done a survey to our mem-bers that was 100 per cent in favour ofrenewal, so from our perspective wehave been very successful in the past fiveyears,” Boekhorst said.

The BIA is a non-profit organizationfunded through tax contributions of par-ticipating businesses. Its purpose is toencourage business in the downtowncore and act on behalf of area businessesincluding promotion, security, cleanlinessand parking.

OpinionOur View

Real worldwinning iseverything

The connection between the bloodsport of politics as it’s played on theground and the lofty ideals of democ-racy is debatable at best.

Never is that more apparent than atelection time.

Take the current election.Indeed, many potential voters would

dearly appreciate anyone taking thiselection… and don’t bother bringing itback!

Many Canadian citizens are rationalpeople who understand that they live ina democracy, with accordant privilegesand responsibilities.

And yet they resent the fact they’reheading to the polls in a couple ofweeks, and would just as soon see theelection go away.

You might think that would be badnews for politicians.

But that’s not necessarily true.Turning off voters can be an advan-

tage in a campaign, something not loston the authors of various attack adsthat started during the unofficial elec-tion, before the real election was evencalled.

While most people are preparedto get on their high horse about theunpleasantness of “negative” advertis-ing, parties keep at it because it works.

Primarily, it works by making peopleso disgusted they don’t bother to vote. When average folk stay away, it leavesthe votes of the ideologically motivatedand party faithful -- who always vote --to carry the day.

In an ideal world, of course, partieswould try to encourage intelligent policydebate and to get as many people out tothe polls as possible on May 2.

But that’s not how realpolitik func-tions.

Political strategy tends to be morecomplicated and sneaky than that.

Decisions are made by those whoshow up.

Especially to the ballot box. That’s worth a thought before the

nastier, eye-glazing parts of the cam-paign cause a large chunk of the elec-torate to tune out, turn off or drop out.

For a newspaper editor, I am ina very embarrassing position.

I’m undecided. It’s close to crunch time, and I

still haven’t made up my mind.I can’t bring myself to vote for

the Conservative candidate in myriding. He’s a shoo-in anyway, sothat revelation is unlikely to drivehim to tears.

And it’s nothing personal. He’sa nice fellow… but I just don’tagree with his politics.

The Liberal candidate lookingfor my vote is also a good, decent, upstandingmember of the community. Nice lady.

But she’s probably not getting my vote, either, because… you guessed it… I don’t agree withher politics.

The NDP appears to be offering a very person-able young fellow, too… but…

Heck. The truth is, I don’t agree with any-body’s politics. Never have.

I have close friends who are or have beenpoliticians, and of practically every politicalstripe. Even a Communist or two (of the Marxist-Leninist variety). We get along just fine. But Idon’t agree with their politics.

And if I did… what would we talk about? You know, I just might vote for the local Pirate

Party candidate. All I really know of him is what I learned

when he ran for council what may well be halfhis lifetime ago. He was just a kid.

To me, politics is more of spectator sport thanthe participatory variety – I was always lousy atsports when I was a kid – but it impresses theheck out of me when someone that young getsso completely involved.

But my contemplation of a Pirate vote isn’t pol-itical. It’s ancestral.

My wife Donna recently discovered that she isdescended from a pirate – not a terribly success-ful pirate, but a pirate nonetheless.

And that’s kind of romantic, don’t you think?

Many generations ago, her sev-eral-great grandfather joined upwith some out-of-work seafarers, got some local bankers to financethem, and bought a boat calledthe Tyger. And they put somepretty big guns on it.

Britain was at odds with Franceat the time, so they set out toplunder a French vessel.

And there she was: ripe for theplucking. But instead of goingright at it, however, our would-be privateers decided it would be

a good idea to get drunk first – they could catchthe rotter in the morning, eh mateys?

When they went looking for the Frenchie inthe morning, hungover and feeling right nasty forthe job, they discovered the blighter had left portovernight, narrowly escaping an undoubtedly ter-rible fate.

So then this Dutchman, loaded with tobacco, crossed their path…

Unfortunately for Donna’s ancestor, the Britshad no quarrel with Holland at the time, and theDutch wanted their tobacco back. So when theprivateers floated their booty into port, insteadof a hero’s welcome, they got fined and thrownin jail for 60 days while the Dutchman and cargowere restored to full seaworthiness – at theTyger’s backers’ expense.

The pirate crew disbanded.Mate John Moore (Donna’s several-great grand-

father) opened a pub, where he became semi-famous for a song he wrote – and often sang– about his piratical exploits… well, really onlyone exploit.

See? Now, that’s the kind of guy who couldcapture my vote. A pirate after my own heart.

(Speaking of which: The pirate’s descendentstole my heart in similar fashion, and while Ibelieve my heart is more valuable than a hogs-head of tobacco, I consider myself fortunate thatshe stumbled upon this particular Dutchman andtook possession of it.)

Dear Editor,Where is the environment in this elec-

tion?After a five-year track record of failing

to meaningfully tackle greenhouse gaspollution, Canada is now falling furtherbehind in being a competitive player inthe rapidly growing clean-energy market.

There is nothing in the Conservativeplatform that would reverse this trend.

The government has announced itwould introduce regulations to reducegreenhouse gas emissions in the produc-tion of electricity, but so far there are nosuch regulations in place.

The government also has not imple-mented the key climate policies needed tomeet emission targets for 2020.

Environment Canada projects that emis-sions will actually be higher in 2020 thanthey are today. Canada would miss theCopenhagen target by nearly 30 per cent.

There is nothing in the Conservativeplatform to reverse this trend.

The worst culprit of the fast-growinggreenhouse gas pollution, the tar sands, are not even mentioned in their platform.

Actually our government officials active-ly lobby in the U.S. and the E.U. againstany restrictions of dirty oil.

They now claim the tar sands oil is “eth-ical” oil, because it is not coming from acountry like Libya.

There is no commitment to phase outfossil fuel subsidies to companies thattreat Canada as a corporate colony andreap billions of dollars in profits from rap-ing and pillaging our environment.

As far as sustainable transportation isconcerned, there is no new funding fortransit, high speed rail, or other cleantransportation, something which would

truly benefit our quality of life and the airwe breathe.

All the other parties have made muchstronger commitments to reduce green-house gases.

The environmental platform of theConservative government, if you can evencall it that, would definitely deserve a fail-ing grade. And we will have to dearly payfor that in the future.

Column cruelDear Editor,

Re: [Politicians singing wrong tune,April 15, TIMES] it is Tim Tyler whosetune has a discordant note.

His statement that Randy Kampwould push a disabled child’s walkerout of the way for a photo op was“mean and downright cruel.”

Writers lose credibility when they usesuch low-blows to further their ownpolitical views. Tim should have addeda few stanzas to his song regarding theother political candidates non-abilities,as it was a little heavy on the drums.

By the way, I usually enjoy Tim’scolumns and sense of humour, butI don’t care for criticizing people’smotives regarding the disabled. I’msure everyone wants the best care andconcern for them.

Dear Editor,It appears that the people who operate

the intermodal terminal on Kennedy Roaddo not care about the businesses or resi-dents of Pitt Meadows.

I have lived on Kennedy Road for 14years. Recently, I have noticed an increase

in the amount of time trains spend block-ing the Kennedy Road grade crossing.

During rush hours, the crossing is nowblocked more often. Sometimes the cross-ing is blocked anywhere from five to 30minutes – whatever it might take.

The trains pull through the yard andout to block Kennedy Road. They stopto unload containers at various locationsfrom the trains, and maybe load somecontainers on for elsewhere.

CP has claimed that they were here first. But the intermodal terminal was built in1997-98, so this is not the case.

When the intermodal terminal wasbeing built, representatives from CP Railmanagement were involved in some reallypositive meetings at the Pitt Meadowscommunity hall.

They said they would try to keepKennedy and Harris Road crossings asclear as possible.

There was supposed to be liaisonbetween CP Rail and the City of PittMeadows. Sadly, it seems that this is nolonger the case.

For local residents and businesses, CPRail’s attitude comes across as “if youdon’t like it you can lump it.”

There is a sign near the Kennedy Roadgrade crossing that has a 1-800 number incase of long delays. The phone seems tobe answered from some distant place, likeCalgary – or Mars. Calling it never resultsin any satisfaction.

Recently a CP Rail representative saidthey were going to start running 9,000-foot-long trains. What are they now,19,000 feet long?

What can be done to address this prob-lem?

Shopping

Say ‘no’ to mallsDear Editor,

Shopping malls are usually accessedby cars, thus generating dense traffic. Not only does traffic increase, but carsare usually driven slowly, when mostof the toxic exhaust is generated.

It has been shown that air quality inthe mall and its vicinity is affected.

Malls are big energy consumers, andthus generate greenhouse gases, addingto global warming and pollution.

In the past, big box stores haveviolated numerous water-quality stan-dards. They did not use proper meth-ods for clearing the site for construc-tion. When heavy rains began (andkeep in mind we are living on the “WetCoast”), the water carried tons of silt tonearby rivers and streams.

I could go on about plastic shoppingbags. And there is also the possibilitythat local retailers would be gobbled upwithin in a short time.

What is the minimum wage in B.C.? Ibelieve it’s the lowest in Canada.

So I’ll leave it at that for the readersto ponder.

Debbie Cook’s house may notbe standing today if it weren’tfor the help of her neighbours.

by Amy [email protected]

A local farmer was just finishing lunchwhen he stepped out on his back deckand noticed the house across his fieldwas burning.

“Fire!” Matt Laity yelled to his wife.“I’m off!”

He and his wife then raced across theirfield in his pickup truck, he jumped thefence, grabbed the garden hose and start-ed to water the side of Debbie Cook’shouse.

It was March 24, and a fire had startedin a shed of Cook’s neighbour’s house onMeadowbrook Place in Maple Ridge.

“I was at work,” said Cook. “Just thecat and the dog were here.”

Laity was not the only oneto come to Cook’s aid thatday.

Her neighbours came overright away to grab the familydog, and Cook said her friendKim Fetherstonhaugh madesure the firefighters knew thefamily also had a cat.

“My other neighbour Glen Elliot rushedover and was hammering on the door andthe 30-foot flames were there,” said Cook,“and my other neighbours also offeredany help they could.”

“I don’t think it gets any better thanthat or any closer than this,” she said, pointing to the charred remains of thetrees planted right up against her house.

It wasn’t until the commotion had dieddown, and Cook was able to take a lookaround, that she noticed her hose wasunravelled.

“I thought, ‘What is that hose doingthere?’” she said. “Did the firemen haveto use my tiny hose?” she laughed.

It was then that she found out MattLaity had sprung into action and doneeverything he could to try to save thehome of a neighbour, whom he hadnever formally met.

While the farmer is humbled by theattention and praise, he knows what it’slike to lose things in a fire.

“I’ve just had a house fire recentlythat’s somewhat similar to this,” he said.“I’m experienced, I’ve lived it, it’s anightmare.”

Cook found out Laity was moving sofast he didn’t even close the door to histruck or consider his own safety that day.

“When it’s a fire that big, the hose feelsmighty small,” said Laity. “I had to back

up because the fire wastoo hot.”

Cook’s neighbour’shouse suffered exten-sive damage, but herhouse has some burnedtrees in the back, and the side is a littlescorched – nothingcompared to what could

have been. When she found out what Laity had

done, she took some things over to him, including a letter that tried to say howthankful she was.

“It was the least I could do,” she said.“I’m just grateful and we feel very lucky.I was quite emotional when I did meethim.”

With propertreatment, somefelines can live withkidney problems.

Ilooked intoBimbo’s sunkeneyes as he spent

his last few courage-ous moments in thearms of his owner,Ellen.

We both knew he had suffered withkidney failure long enough and it wastime to put him to sleep.

Unfortunately this scenario is all toofamiliar to me as a veterinarian treatingcats with chronic kidney failure – one ofthe most common causes of feline fatal-ity.

The kidneys have many functions: toremove metabolic waste products andregulate potassium and sodium, and toconserve water and produce urine.

Fortunately they have a large amount ofspare capacity so cats can live quite wellwith less than 100 per cent kidney func-tion.

Many older cats have lost more thanhalf their kidney function, but when theyget beyond two-thirds lost they start todevelop chronic renal failure.

In the early stages they experienceweight loss, poor coat, bad breath, andincreased thirst and urination to compen-sate for early failure.

As the toxins such as urea, creatinineand phosphorus build up in the blood, they experience nausea, vomiting, oralulcers, anemia, and depression.

There are manycauses for renal fail-ure such as congenitalkidney problems, cysts, urinary tractinfections, cancer, leukemia virus, andkidney stones.

Unfortunately theearly diagnosis ofrenal failure is dif-ficult, as changes inblood parameters arenot evident until there

is significant loss of kidney function. All senior cats should have a urinaly-

sis done every 6-12 months to check forprotein and dilute urine to assess kidneyfunction.

If early kidney failure is detected, whatcan be done? There are special diets thatare reduced in protein and phosphorusthat will reduce the cat’s production ofexcessive toxic metabolites.

Phosphate binders can be given, as wellas potassium supplements, probiotics thatreduce urea levels, and medications toreduce blood pressure if needed.

Often these older cats will need morewater than they are able to drink, sosometimes they will need intravenous flu-ids for a few days to improve their condi-tion when in crisis.

Once the kidney tissue is damaged, itdoes not usually repair itself. But, withproper monitoring and treatment, it ispossible for some older cats to live afew years with chronic kidney failure. However, when they reach end stagekidney failure and they are not enjoyinglife, such as Bimbo, euthanasia may bethe best option to consider to end the suf-fering.

Ridge MeadowsSouth Asian CulturalSociety held its fourthannual gala.

Teija [email protected]

The Ridge MeadowsSouth Asian Cultural Society donated$13,500 to local charities after a success-ful gala fundraiser in February.

The fourth annual event, whichincluded South Asian food, music, anddance performances at the senior centrein Maple Ridge, was nearly sold out thisyear, with more than 200 members of thecommunity in attendance.

Last week, the society presenteda cheque for $5,000 to the Family

Education and SupportCentre, and a chequefor $8,500 to the RidgeMeadows HospitalFoundation.

“[These beneficiaries]have been doing goodwork with the commun-ity at large,” said Dr.Biju Mathew, foundingpresident of the society.“The hospital needs

funding for equipment. The family centreis doing a lot of wonderful work, buttheir funding is very restricted.”

“We are extremely thankful to the com-munity at large for supporting us andmaking the gala a night to remember,”Mathew said. “I think every year it’s beena near sell-out crowd.”

The South Asian Cultural Society wasformed in 2006 by citizens whose ances-try is from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

Students across thedistrict, from high schoolto elementary, took partin some track and fieldevents these past fewweeks.

by Amy [email protected]

The sun was bright, the ground was dry(ish), and the energy washigh for the Nick WilkesInvitational held at MapleRidge Secondary School onApril 7.

About 400 high schoolstudents from SchoolDistrict 42, as well as mostof the Coquitlam schools, and Walnut Grove, des-cended on the track atMRSS to compete in thefirst track and field meetof the season.

“The whole idea is toencourage participation,”said MRSS English teacherand organizer Ken Elphick.

This event is held everyyear and honours NickWilkes, a former MRSSstudent who died in 2002.

“On our track team hestill holds the provincialrecord for the decathlon,”said Elphick.

“We named the meetafter him. It’s all aboutfun and participation, andhe was someone who waspassionate about track andfield,” he added.

The races were for bothboys and girls at the meet,

with some co-ed racesthrown in. A highlight ofthe event was the steeple-chase, where participantshad to jump over obstaclesand land in water. Thebigger the splash the big-ger the cheer.

“It’s a lot of work,” saidElphick, “but it is sucha reward to see so manykids out there.” He alsostressed that he couldn’torganize it by himself, andhad many volunteers fromthe high schools runningall the events.

The MRSS track teamnow competes in numer-ous events and compe-titions, and Elphick ishoping to take a solidteam to the provincialchampionships this year.

Hopefully the weatherwill be just as good as thefirst day event.

“This is about the firstyear in 10 we’ve had goodweather,” Elphick laughed.

Unfortunately the samecould not be said forSchool District 42’s pri-mary cross-country racesheld last week.

The rain poured downon the heads of the chil-dren, parents, and vol-unteers at Albion sportsfields last Wednesday.

However, that did notstop the children fromhaving fun.

Cheers for each schoolcould be heard comingfrom various tents, anddespite wet hair hangingin their eyes and theirclothes sticking to theirskin, most children were

happy just to get a chanceto run.

Wednesday, April 13,was grades one to threefrom half the district, andthat still totalled about 500kids.

“It’s all about participa-tion, and encouraging kidsto get out and get active,”said Lisa Jakeway, the ele-mentary facilitator.

“I give ribbons to thefirst 25 participants ineach age category, andeveryone gets a partici-pants’ ribbon,” she added.

This primary meet hasbeen running for a long

time, and even thoughthe weather has oftennot cooperated, it’s stillrewarding for everyoneinvolved.

“Just seeing the kidshaving fun,” said Jakeway,“even in the rain they’re

cheering and runningaround.”

“It’s a great communityevent and it brings peopletogether,” she added.

In support of the Family Education andSupport Centre, residents will be runningto raise money on Saturday morning.

Runners and walkers of all ages and abil-ities will hopefully be able to enjoy a sunnymorning this Saturday, as the fourth annualRiver Run kicks off the running season.

The run is in aid of the Family Educationand Support Centre, and takes place along thePitt Meadows dikes on Harris Road.

Faye Luxumberg-Hyam, executive directorof the centre said they have about 75 to 100participants, but the race builds every year.

“It’s to support families, it’s a familyevent,” she said. “We get whole families run-ning and walking together.”

Everyone is welcome to take part, and therewill be prizes for the winners, “goodies” forthe first 100 participants, and an Easter egghunt for young children.

Luxumberg-Hyam said this race is “anopportunity for families to get together, havefun and challenge themselves, while enjoying

the natural beauty of our community.”The Family Education and Support Centre is

celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, andworks in the community to provide informa-tion, educations, resources, and support toindividuals and families by promoting know-ledge, and supporting growth,

Everyone is welcome to come out and seethe runners. Registration takes place at 8:30a.m., with the 10-kilometre run starting at 9a.m., and the five-kilometre run and familyrun kicking off at 9:05 a.m.
