CAMPBELL KINDERGARTEN UPDATE

Community Effort Saves Campbell Kindergarten and Karori Kids Preschool Campbell Kindergarten held a celebratory picnic today, complete with Zappo the magician, to mark their victory in the campaign to save the kindergarten site. On the eve of the presentation of our petition to parliament, the Ministry of Education announced that it plans to safeguard the sites of Campbell Kindergarten and Karori Kids Preschool. The kindergarten and the preschool were at risk because the Ministry transferred the land to Victoria University, and the university planned to sell it. Families at both centres have been involved in a campaign since late last year to get the university to change its position, and to get the Minister of Education to resolve the issues. They have lobbied university council members, Wellington City Council members and MPs, written letters, used social media to publicise the crisis, spoken out in the media and circulated the petition, which gained 1500 signatures. “The whole community made this happen” says Campbell Kindergarten head teacher Amanda Higgins. “We had a fabulous celebration today on our new grass - everybody has a sense of relief after all the stress and uncertainty.” Amanda says the campaign was used as a learning vehicle, and children, teachers and parents have gained knowledge about advocacy. She says it has been stressful and exhausting, and the teaching team is grateful for the support of other kindergartens in this campaign. Whanau Manaaki chief executive Amanda Coulston says it’s a relief that common sense has prevailed and the Ministry and the University have finally agreed that this is the right thing to do. “This decision shows that when the community stands up, change can happen. It is election year, and we need to remember that

we can win. Now we need to stand up and continue our campaign for proper funding of quality early childhood education for all

families.”
