LEAVE WITHOUT PAY DEDUCTIONS Please check your kindergarten e-mail for your deduction notification as these will be made in the 1st of March pay. As we wrote in the previous two Koreros... “If a teacher had more than 5 days Leave Without Pay during 2016, we need to make pay deductions as per clause 4.2.g of the Kindergarten Teachers, Head Teachers and Senior Teachers’ Collective Agreement. We will make these deductions from the 1 March payday. We have made the calculations and will be emailing people who are affected over the next couple of days. If you know, or think, you had more than 5 days Leave Without Pay during 2016 please keep an eye on your emails and get back to us if you want to discuss it.” Study Assistance Grant We are inviting applications for our Study Assistance Grant. The grant, to a maximum of $500, is “…for the purpose of undertaking a course of study that will upgrade or otherwise enhance a qualification in education.” Please send your applications to Karen Skett at [email protected] by 28 February 2017. The policy, with application form, can be found here or in last weeks Kōrero. Paid Union Meetings NZEI have asked us to let you know that the March 2nd meeting venue has changed and a new one will be advertised. Keep an eye out for a new update from NZEI closer to the time. We have received official notification that NZEI is holding Paid Union Meetings for members around our region between 21 February and 9 March. Members will have been sent the schedule of meetings and you will see that most of these meetings are at 3.30pm which is non-contact time for most of you and so it’s fine for any union members who wish to, to attend. For members in our Full Day Kindergartens this is a little trickier and we are talking with NZEI about how to enable to members to attend a meeting and/or hear the information. Full Day Kindergartens are likely to receive direct communication from NZEI about this. If you have any questions or need to talk about this please contact Karen at [email protected] or on 021 857 826. UPLC UPLC (for Kindergartens in the Upper Hutt area) meeting at Silverstream kindergarten at 3.30 on 22nd February. CAMPBELL KINDERGARTEN UPDATE
Community Effort Saves Campbell Kindergarten and Karori Kids Preschool Campbell Kindergarten held a celebratory picnic today, complete with Zappo the magician, to mark their victory in the campaign to save the kindergarten site. On the eve of the presentation of our petition to parliament, the Ministry of Education announced that it plans to safeguard the sites of Campbell Kindergarten and Karori Kids Preschool. The kindergarten and the preschool were at risk because the Ministry transferred the land to Victoria University, and the university planned to sell it. Families at both centres have been involved in a campaign since late last year to get the university to change its position, and to get the Minister of Education to resolve the issues. They have lobbied university council members, Wellington City Council members and MPs, written letters, used social media to publicise the crisis, spoken out in the media and circulated the petition, which gained 1500 signatures. “The whole community made this happen” says Campbell Kindergarten head teacher Amanda Higgins. “We had a fabulous celebration today on our new grass - everybody has a sense of relief after all the stress and uncertainty.” Amanda says the campaign was used as a learning vehicle, and children, teachers and parents have gained knowledge about advocacy. She says it has been stressful and exhausting, and the teaching team is grateful for the support of other kindergartens in this campaign. Whanau Manaaki chief executive Amanda Coulston says it’s a relief that common sense has prevailed and the Ministry and the University have finally agreed that this is the right thing to do. “This decision shows that when the community stands up, change can happen. It is election year, and we need to remember that
we can win. Now we need to stand up and continue our campaign for proper funding of quality early childhood education for all
families.”
