Best memory:An early childhood spent growingup in the Arab state of Kuwait inthe Middle East gave me sometruly incredible memories of atotally different culture. And no, Idon’t speak Arabic.
Best way to spend the day:Any mixture of getting out on themotorbikes with mates, liftingweights at the gym, watching NFLand MotoGP sports action, andthen seeing all my friends out and
about having a good time at FiestaHavana is a pretty decent day.
Best advice:Life is too short not to be happy, having fun and making the mostof each day. Hugs not drugs.
Best place in the Isle of Man:My house at Cross Four Wayswatching the Southern 100 roadracing while having a barbecueunder the summer sun is prettyhard to beat. It can be easy totake for granted just how goodwe have it on this Island.

It’s time to get readyfor those exam resultsThe time of year beloved bystudents and teachers alike is almostupon us: A-level and GCSE resultswill be released in the next coupleof weeks. It’s just what 16 and 18-year-olds needduring what for many will be theirfinal six-week break, a massiveamount of stress as they await theoutcome of exams that will quiteprobably shape the next few years oftheir life.
Yep, even teenagers know that theexam results are more important thanwhether they look old enough to beserved in a pub.
There are many things that thestudents should bear in mind at thistime and here are but a few.
• No matter how well you perform inyour results, how hard you havestudied, how much your teachershave worked with you, you can restassured that during the week of theresults, the media will be full ofolder people grumbling about howexams have become easier.
• These will probably be the samepeople who for years have beendemanding better performancefrom schools - yet, when theschools actually manage that,
prefer to claim it is down to adecline in difficulty levels.
• You will meet people like thisthroughout your life. It doesn’t getany less annoying, but you’ll learnto develop some fitting ripostes. Inthe meantime, you could trysuggesting to people three timesyour age who are criticising how‘easy’ exams have become thatthey may like to consider if therehave been any major advances ineducational resources in the pastcouple of decades; you know, likethe internet.
• Don’t forget to ask all those agedand wise people exactly whatgrades they needed to get into theUniversity of Life. Then ask whynone of them went to thePolytechnic* of Life.
• Didn’t get the results you werehoping for? One word: re-sit.
*For the sake of the exam participantsreading this, polytechnics existedbefore you were born and often dealtwith more technical and vocationalcourses than many of the universities. But then it was decided to call all ofthem universities, to make it that littlebit harder to determine which was thebest educational establishment foryour needs.

The prolonged dry spell in Julybrought water levels in theIsland’s reservoirs under thespotlight. But it would have to be a much longer droughtto put the overall water network at risk ofrunning short of supplies.
These days, management of the Island’sreservoirs means the lifeline supply of water ismore secure than it has ever been. While shortdroughts might lead to minor issues on smallnetworks, the truth is that we have plenty ofgood quality water on tap.
Gareth Patchett (pictured), water productionmanager for the Water Authority, said theheatwave in July had not been a problem.
‘The system is designed for this kind ofweather, it is just business as usual,’ he said.
The north of the Island, including Peel, gets itswater supplied from the Island’s biggestreservoir – Sulby, which has a capacity for 100million gallons of water and has its own watertreatment works next to it.
For the south zone, including Douglas, themain reservoir supply is from West Baldwin,
supplemented by Clypse and Kerrowdhooreservoirs in Onchan, feeding Douglas watertreatment works.
‘In a dry year, you have to pump the waterover the hill from Sulby to Baldwin,’ said MrPatchett.
It is estimated that one in every five years thatbecomes necessary. So the bad news is weshould not expect a similar sunny spell until2018!
The treatment works at Douglasis relatively new and is designedto supply water to up to 70 percent of the Island’s population. Itcan treat up to 37 million litres ofwater per day.
Even before the rainfall at theend of July, there was littleprospect of any hosepipe ban.The only likely problem scenario, should we enjoy a secondheatwave this summer, is a short-term supply problem in a small, localised system, possibly caused by someoneleaving sprinklers on all the night.
But the supplies from the reservoirs, none of
which dropped below 60 per cent full duringthe 16 days without rain last month, are not indanger of drying up.
Mr Patchett said: ‘It is a dry year and we arehaving to take measures designed to be takenin a dry year, but it still helps if people don’twaste water.
‘We are lucky in the Isle of Man that we havean established supply of water but it can’t betaken for granted.’
Keeping the Island’s water lifeline safe
Life line: West Baldwinreservoir, which can hold upto 300 million gallons, hasseen its levels drop followinglast month’s dry spell
A teenage racer from the Isle of Manis back in action soon in his bid topick up a major title.Chris Mealin gets behind the wheel of hisKingswood Honda sponsored Chevrolet MonteCarlo at Raceway Venray in the Netherlands onAugust 17 as he continues his bid to win theRookie Championship title in the Late ModelV8 Supercup.

He has enjoyed a strong season so far, winninground 2 of the championship and is currently inpole position to achieve his goal of landing theRookie Championship.
After that success, he also saw action atLydden Hill in Kent inJune for six non-championship racesover two days.
The undulating, 600-metre, kidney-shapedoval posed achallenge to Chris, who was taking partin his first races onthe track, but he waseager to get as muchtime in the car aspossible.
The middle of thefirst day’s races sawChris’s first win on UKsoil and his secondvictory in the #23car.
The second day ofthe races saw dampconditions at theoutset.
Chris said: ‘We
weren’t fightingfor points so Ijust kept out oftrouble andtried to gain
some moreexperiencewhilst keepingthe car in goodcondition for theremaining two races.’
The next race saw high drama as, with Chrisrunning in fourth position, he was caught by2012
European Late Model Series champion FrankWouters, and former CAMSO V8 championJean Vasseur.
With Chris holding the inside line Woutersmisjudged his braking and nudged the rear ofthe #23 car as they went over the brow at Turn4, causing Chris to lose the rear of the car. With nowhere to go, Vasseur clipped Chris’sfront right tyre before ending up in the tyrewall.
Chris managed to finish fourth.
He said after the meeting: ‘It has been aninvaluable weekend for us. We've shown goodpace and I've learnt a lot about the car bycoming to a different track. Hopefully it willstand in me in even better stead when wehead back to Venray.’

Much Ado About ShakespeareShakespeare’s most perfect exploration oflove will be performed in the open air thisweek as TNT Theatre brings Much AdoAbout Nothing to the Isle of Man.There will be three performances: two at Peel Castle andone in Rushen Abbey.
Director Paul Stebbings said: ‘Much Ado About Nothing isperhaps Shakespeare's most perfect exploration of love.
‘Through the trials and tribulations of a quartet of loversand their friends and enemies we see love in all itsabsurdity and splendour, in all its tragedy and stupidity.
‘We are all fools for love, ever were and ever will be.
‘But that folly is essential to our humanity and without lovewe are mean and selfish and allied only to death. ‘
He added: ‘Shakespeare explores these great themes witha lightness of touch remarkable even for him, and createsin Benedict and Beatrice two of the most charming andspirited lovers in classical literature. Besides which the plotis almost perfect - combining high drama, great jokes andfabulous poetry in a dizzy sequence of scenes that leavesthe audience torn between tears and laughter.
‘If this is Much Ado About Nothing then our lives and lovesare indeed nothing - for this play lays life bare, then hasthe grace to laugh.’
