    SPECIFICATION FORUMBRELLAS, FOLDING—MANUAL

    0. FOREWORD

    0.1 This -Indian StancIard was adopted by the Indian Standardshtitu~ion on 29 August 1983, after the draft finalized by the U-mbrellasSectioi-ial Committee had been approved by the Consumer Products andMedical instruments Division Council.

    0.2 ‘1’he figures, in the standard, are given ordy as a typical illustratiomand shall not be considered as suggestive of any standarcl design.

    0.3 ‘Fhis standard is related to the manufacturing and trade practicesprevailing in the country.

    0.4 ‘1 he shapes of the handles have not been specified as these areusual[y according to the dictates of fashion.

    0,5 For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of thisstauclard is complied with, the final value, observed or calculated,expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS : 2-1960*. The number of significant places retainedin the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified valuein this standard.

    2. TYPES

    2.1 The manual operating folding uinbrel]as shall be of the followingtwo types depending upon the nature of folding:

    3. SIZES

    3.1 The manual operating foIding umbrellas shall be of the foI1owingsizes:

    4. MATERIALS

    4.1 The various components of the folding umbrelias shall be made fromthe materials specified in Table 1. Materials not specifically designatedshall be suitable for tbe purpose intended._——- —. —.

The tubesha!l be c!~romiutn over nickel plated m accordance with Grade 3 ofIs : 1068-1%8’. The surface of the tubes shall be free from burrs ant!other surface defects and s~all not be visibly mLIgh.

    5.3 The s[opper shall be proptirly fitted at tile tube, and when depressedand released ten times \vith [hc thumb, it shall return to normalposition.

    5.4 The main ribs shall be of foldin,g type, that is, consisting of two ribssu-etching along wi[h the cloth. The foldable ribs joint shaii be suchthat whi!e fo[ding the umbrelIa, it functions smoothly and does notdamage the umbrella cloth.

    5.5 The cloth shalI be sui:ably cut in panels and firmly stitched toqerher‘Dy a selvirtg thread con-forming to variety No. 20 or 22 of 1S : 1720-19787. Tire co[our of the thread shall match with the shade of thec!ot~l’or ~yi[~lany Otle colour of the printed cloth/cloth havin< difierentCO]otIr combinations. The coiour of the thread shall be fx,t. Theminimum number of stirches per 25 mm shall be IO. Edge of umbrel~acloth shall be either of natllral border ( selvccl,qed ) or stitchwi ( in caseof slitted border ). J-f stitched, the minim Llm number of stitchesper ?5 mm si~all be 8. The cloth shail aim be streuqthened at the topabove the notch and under the cloth by putting a plastic or c!oth piecelatown as CH.WD~i~.-L In addition, a rubber or waterproof washer maybe Gtted o$er tile cloth under the ferrule. The cloth shall be stitchedfirmiy to dle holes at the ends of the ribs with a minimum of fives[itches and also suitably stitched at the juncrion of the main ribs andsmtcher ribs. At the top, the cloth shall be bound with the help ofsewing thread wound round five times and so stitched that each seamshali get one stitch and the thread shall travel s~irally around the\vound thread, ftnishirig the W-ork ivith ~an additiormi two kuots at the!m.t seam. The seams shall not yield or bulrlge anti the cloth J-tall notbe slack or show any other defect when the urnbreiia is i“Lllly opened.The stitching threacl shall not be visible on the outer surface.

    5.7 The umbre[la shall be provided with a suitable band made of samecloth used for the umbrellas or plitstic or rubber or elastic tape having aring at the free end and a button at the fixed encl for wrapping the cIothwhen the umbrella is closed. Alternatively, the band may be providedwith a press button.

    6. TESTS

    6.1 Performance Test — The umbrella shall be opened and closed50 times and folded, the ribs shall not show any deformation and thecloth shall not show any signs of opening of seams or bulging. l?o!dingsystem shall function properly.

    6.2 Pull Test — The umbrella shall be closed, foIried and clalnpedapproximately in the central portion on the outer tube in such a mannerthat i~ is vertical with the handle downward. The umbrella shall besubjected to a Ioad of 5 kg on the handle for one minute. The handleshall not break or get detached from the tube.

    7. LMARKING

    7.1 Each fo[ding umbrelIa shall be mzrke d ~vith the fol]olvin,ginformation:

    a) Manufacturer’s name, initials or trade-mark;

    b) Type;

    c) Size;

    d) Month and year of manufacture/supply ( if specified by thepurchaser );

    e) Batch No. or code No.; and

    f) The words ‘Nfade in India{ if exported.

    7.LI The umbreiias may also be marked with the 1S1 CertiEcarionhfark.

    8. PACKING

    8.1 Each folding umbrella shall be suitably packed in a plastic or clothor rexine cover as agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier.The transit packing shall aIso be as agreed to between the puxchaser andthe supplier.

    9.1 Sampling procedure and acceptance criteria for manual foldingumbrel!as, sha~l be ai agreed to between the purchaser and the supplier.A recommended scheme for the same is given in Appendix A.

    A-3.2 A sample of size as given in CO14 of Table 2 shall be selected atrandom and shall be inspected for performance test ( s~e6.1 ) and puIItest ( see 6.2 ). The lot shail be considered as conforming to theserequirements if the number of clefectives found in the sample is less tb-anor eqtial to the corresponding permissible number of defective as givenin CO15 of Table 2.

    A-3.3 The lot shall be considered as conforming to the standard if 3.1,and 3.2 are satisfied.
