discussion of the President's duties and thedesires of the current President, a motion byStephen Belcher, seconded by Barbara Frank, todefer elections and by-laws to the next businessmeeting was carried with one abstention and noopposing votes.

Stephen Belcher reported on thejournal; Mande Studies 7 (2005) is now in print,and copies were on display at the Wisconsinbooth. Mande Studies 8 is close to completion,and we hope for publication in early winter. Weneed submissions for Mande Studies 9 and invitethem. The latest issue features one innovation:glossy photo pages for some of the illustrations.

David reported on arrangements for theLisbon conference, which are going very well.The meeting ended about 8:30, and severalmembers went out to our customary dinnertogether.

David Conrad called the meeting to order a bitafter 7:00 pm. After the President identified theagenda, Kassim gave the treasurer's report assubmitted by Laura Arntson, currently inNigeria.

In summary, the Treasurer reports thatwe have 223 current members, of whom 18% aresponsoring and 89 sponsored members. We alsosend newsletters to 12 institutions. There are 324members in the data base, of whom 31% are notcurrent in their dues. Money is short, and itseems necessary to raise the dues somewhat tomeet costs, which besides the newsletter nowincludes a higher price for Mande Studies. Lauraproposes raising dues as follows: Regular (withnewsletter and journal $30 (formerly $25);Sponsoring $45 (formerly $40); Full Student(with newsletter and journal) $28 (formerly $20);Basic Student (newsletter only) $10 (formerly$10).

There was some discussion of the issue,but it was linked to the question of amending theby-laws which had been raised by BarbaraHoffman; as Barbara was not present (Davidreported on her valiant efforts to come to theconference for the sole purpose of the meeting,efforts that were thwarted by the demons of theCleveland airport), all of these questions weredeferred to next year's meeting.

Bassekou Kouyate, ngoni player from Garana,Segou, has won three important awar.ds for hisalbum Segu Blue, released in Europe, March2007, on a small independent German label, OUTHERE RECORDs (distributed in the USA byFORCED EXPOSURE). Since releasing the album, Bassekou andhis group Ngoniba have been headlining majorMalian festivals such as the Festival of the Desert

and Festival sur le Niger (Segou), and they havealso been touring Europe extensively. Bassekou'sproject has introduced the Bamana Segourepertoire and highlighted the special qualitiesof the ngoni to many new audiences around theworld.

Meanwhile, Malian kora playerextraordinaire Toumani Diabate has released hisfirst solo kora album in over 20 years, to greatcritical acclaim (in Feb, 2008. on the UKindependent label World Circuit). EntitledThe Mande Variations, it revisits some korastandards such as Alla l'aa ke, but also extendsthe boundaries of the kora by using new tuningsand creating completely new experimental andimprovisatory compositional styles. In recent years the famous male ritualassociation known as Poro has even taken on newsignifIcance in the 'context of political upheaval inthe war-tom border area between Guinea andLiberia. Drawing on extensive fieldwork andregional comparative research, the study not onlyprovides a detailed account of hitherto unknownritual practices in the Upper Guinea forest andcoastal region, it also challenges recurring claimsabout the political role of secret societies in thispart of West Africa.

The retention of 'tradition' in the face of'change' is of central analytical concern toResisting State Iconoclasm. Against presentistaccounts of persistent culture, Christian Hejbjergargues that an adequate explanation of Lornareligious resilience requires a composite approachaddressing both the political dynamics of thestudied area and the cognitive and relationalprocesses involved in the transmission ofreligious and ritual tradition. Submissions will be peer-reviewed before acceptance. The journal willaccept and publish manuscripts in English orFrench. Manuscript submissions should be typewrittenor computer-printed in double-spacing, andshould be accompanied, if possible, with anelectronic version of the text on a diskette(IBMlMS-DOS; Mac texts should be sent by e-mail). Authors must furnish any maps orillustrations in hard copy suitable forreproduction, and are responsible for obtainingany necessary permission.
