From the Deputies Parents often ask us how they can support their child through difficult times. ReachOut Parents has recently launched ReachOut Parents Coaching. Qualified coaches that specialise in social work, psychology and health are available free of cost to support parents one-on-one over the phone and online. Any parent of a teenager aged 12 – 18 can access this free service, and the wait time at the moment is just a week.

How it works

Step 1: Book first session

Once you have booked your appointment, your coach will call at your session time. This session will start with understanding and exploring your concerns about your teenager.

Step 2: Attend first session

During the session, your coach will document what you want to aim for and the practical tools to help you get there. You will have access to these documents at the end of your session.

Step 3: Focus sessions (optional)

After completing the first session, you have the option to attend three additional sessions. Your coach will build you a personalised program based on your specific needs.

ReachOut Australia is the organisation behind ReachOut Parents and the flagship service for 14-25 year-olds: ReachOut.com. Vale Jock Fraser This week we heard the news of the passing of former Deputy Principal, Jock Fraser. Our condolences to his family.

Jock Fraser was a Deputy Principal at Manly from 1986 until he retired in 1998/9. He was also an Alumni of the school (1952 - 1956). He was here when the school opened in 1954. His teaching career began in 1961 at Balgowlah Boys High often having classes of 52 boys. In 1974 he joined Manly as History Master. Because of falling numbers (from 1400 to 650 in 1984), a separate History Department was no longer viable, and Jock became Head Teacher of English and History in 1984.

“Old School”, “Kind”, “Told It Like It Was” … these are some of the recurring memories from staff who remember him – and then there are the anecdotes that we can’t print, however amusing. The students at the time seem to have regarded him well. This line is from a farewell poem about ‘Our Teachers’ by a Year 12 student in 1981 ‘And Jock who’s suave and quite the cool, with his bright shiny boots.’ It might also have something to do with the famous Jock Fraser Rock’n’Roll Nostalgia Concert of 1975. By the accounts of the day this was uproarious and ‘shook the foundations of Manly Boys High’. He is billed as ‘Jock Fraser, formerly of Jock and the Jockettes’.

The following is an extract from an article in the 1998 Pines Magazine:

Page 5: Manly Campus

In 1998 Mr Fraser was made a life member of the NSW Teachers’ Federation – crowning his distinguished profession as an educator for 38 years. He joined the Manly-Warringah Teachers’ Association in 1974, where he worked on the Quality Education Campaign of the late 1970s, crusading vigorously against the “Metherallisation” of education. He became their publicity officer and later president.

He believed that the use of the cane to discipline was incongruous in a world where people were promoting freedom, peace and love, and he advocated for smaller class sizes and the abolition of the cane. He was passionate in his belief that teachers were overloaded with responsibility without an increase in government support.

2018 Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability NBSC Manly Campus, along with schools across Australia, will again be participating in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability (NCCD). Our involvement in this process is crucial as it will provide valuable information about supports required for a broad group of students in our school. The NCCD will enable National and State governments to better target support and resources in schools, which will in turn help schools access support for all students with additional needs.

The NCCD is not limited to students with diagnosed disabilities. It uses a very broad definition of disability, taken from the Disability Discrimination Act 1992 and the Disability Standards for Education 2005, which includes a range of health issues and learning difficulties where schools implement strategies to support students in participating effectively in their learning.

The Data Collection will take place in August. No personal or identifying information about any student will be included. If you have any concerns about the NCCD, please contact Ms Kate Munro (Head Teacher Secondary Studies).

You can find out more about the NCCD at NCCD School Students with Disabilty.

Armoury Challenge – Help needed Our school does have some archival material - the problem being how to access it! At the moment it is in a jumble along with decades of assorted storage in the armoury*. For years we have put this into the ‘too hard’ bin. The time has come to brave the task and sort it out! The aim is to pull everything out, sort it, clean the space, and redesign the layout. There may also be some shelf building for those with a meccano mindset.

If we are ever to keep enduring records of our school this is a job that must be done.

The appeal is to anyone who would be willing to lend a hand for an hour or so in the school holidays to let me know (for catering purposes; naturally there will be morning tea and lunch provided).

*Note: If you are wondering where the armoury is, it is next to the boys toilet. And if you are wondering what the armoury is, it is the old room where the guns were kept back in the old days when the school had cadets.

Congratulations to all band members in the school musical.

It is an outstanding show and the band directors and other members appreciated your attendance at rehearsals during this busy week.

Chamber Orchestra, Saturday 23 June

On Saturday afternoon the Chamber Orchestra played at the Northern Beaches Instrumental Festival. After hearing three string ensembles from primary schools (of which some of us were alumni) we wowed the audience with a fast-paced Mozart overture, Cosí fan tutte, followed by Bizet’s well-loved Carmen Suite. The event was a great opportunity for us to inspire younger musicians in our local area, some of whom may one day be members of the Manly Campus Chamber Orchestra.

Thank you to Mark Brown for conducting us.

A HUGE thank you from the band to the host families of the Phoenix Children’s Choir for your generosity, warm welcome, warm houses and the good times their host students experienced in Sydney.

These 15 band families raised an invaluable $5,000 for the band program and some goodwill besides!

Host families went the extra mile in Sydney last Sunday, filling the day with coast walks, whale watching, kayaking, aquarium, movies, museums and more.

Families, in return, were treated to the choirs’ beautiful singing at the tour’s finale concert the Opera House last Friday and the bright personalities and enthusiasm of the students who stayed with them.

The members of the Phoenix Children’s Choir were delightful guests, and, by all reports, it was a win-win experience all round. Here’s just a few:

From the Cannon Family:

We loved having them stay with us …We were also blown away by the choir! We managed to fit in a trip to the movies, walk around Manly, wild ropes adventure at the zoo, and walks on the beaches (even saw whales breach in the distance!). And we learned how to make black bean toasted sandwiches!

From the Watkins Family:

It was an absolute pleasure to have (them) stay with us last week. The girls became part of our family very quickly and were a delight to have around the house. The similarities - and differences! - between our lives on the Northern Beaches and in Arizona made for some very entertaining dinner time conversations! We would not hesitate to welcome more students again and look forward to keeping in touch with the girls in the future.

From the Moran Family

We really enjoyed meeting (the girls from Phoenix) and it was fun to have them around. Our girls were friendly, engaging and appreciative. From the Dowse House (Eve and Grace)

The girls were so nice and fitted so well with our family. We’ll definitely miss dancing to ‘bangers’ in the kitchen, the constant banter and hearing about how different their life is in Arizona. We loved our adventure day together around Sydney. If it wasn’t for the 4:40 am departure the next day, we couldn’t have let them go! Absolute legends.

Page 13: Manly Campus

The Palmer family

It was such an amazing, valuable and pleasurable experience to be a host…We were not only able witness their extraordinary and emotional performances but to spend time with them and learn about their life... I feel we formed a unique bond with the girls and having grown up with a house full of boys our home has never smelt sweeter. What a great week and break from the usual routine! Loved it every minute. Wish they could have stayed longer…..

CALL OUT to Manly Campus students and families!

Sunday 12th August 2018

Every year the Bands of Manly Campus are invited to volunteer at the annual City to Surf fun run at Bondi Beach’s finish line to raise funds for our band programs. Our job is fun, simple, and extremely important. Manly Campus is highly regarded by the organisers for our excellent customer service. This is a highlight of our school’s fundraising events.

WHAT WE GET:Lots of fun, beach morning and community spirit!

WHAT WE HAVE TO DO: Take bags belonging to the runners from trucks and place them in numerical order so that when the runners arrive at the finish line we can give the bags back to them.

We get paid for every person who attends: family, friends, this is open to everyone, not just Manly students, although we want to see as many of you there!

In 2017 we raised almost $4000. More people = More $$• Event T-shirt • Morning Tea• Duke of Ed - 4 volunteering hours • School achievement awards for

community service (equivalent to 4 x pink merits)

• Year 10 students 6 hours can go towards your 20 hour volunteering quota.

• 10kg block of chocolate for the school year with most participants

Location: Near finish line at Bondi BeachArrival time: 6:30amEstimated finish time: 10-11am (due to road closures)Parking: Limited car parking is available, so car-pooling is a must! If you can bring a car full of people let us know ASAP- we aim to get you a parking permit at a nearby car park. There are shuttle buses to take us from the car park to the beach.Contact: Call Monique Pardavi on 0423 803 851, or email [email protected] to volunteer for this event by 6 July 2018. Everyone is welcome.
