Robotics Club

Every Wednesday afternoon our Robotics Club meet in the Computer Room after Sport to develop their skills under the expert guidance of our parents Carlo Manfredini and Mark Lynch. Below are some comments from the students, highlighting the range of challenges and activities the club offers.

In completing the statement ‘I’ve been working on’, students have been:

• re-working the Bluetooth robot, making more customisable, adding options, etc.

• a neural program that teaches the robot (with no outside help) to follow a line

• building a bionic hand because I’m fascinated by prosthetic limbs

When asked what they like about the club, students responded:

• I like how I can make or program anything and don’t have a set order. I also like how I can learn what I want and I have to work it out instead of being told

• The club’s freedom to do as you wish • The amount of resources the robotics club

own as it allows me to be extremely creative with my designs

• It’s fun and challenging

From the Deputies The ‘T Element’ – Adding Breadth to the Depth of Knowledge

This week, both of us attended a conference that included a keynote presentation from Associate Professor Alison Beavis, Deputy Dean of the UTS Faculty of Transdisciplinary Innovation. This faculty has been credited as being at the leading edge of tertiary education models. Over the last 7 years they have developed and offered both diploma and bachelor degrees in technology, creative and innovative thinking that focus on developing future work skills.

These courses no longer have exams; instead the faculty is focusing on assessments that include problem-solving, projects and collaboration to develop real-world solutions. They are attracting highly capable students (average ATAR of 94), and whilst they are currently the smallest faculty, they have the largest amount of industry partnerships across a broad range of sectors. All of the learning experiences developed for the courses are underpinned by the ‘T element’.

Robotics Club Wednesdays, Room 223A, 2:30-3:20pm

Any Year 7 and 8 students who are interested, please come along

Page 3: Manly Campus€¦ · NBSC Manly Campus 138 Abbott Road, North Curl Curl NSW 2099 Phone: 9905 3982 / Fax: 9905 777 Email: nbscmanlys-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au

The ‘T’ in ‘T element’ refers to a taking a trans-disciplinary approach to learning and problem-solving - an extension of multi- and intra-disciplinary approaches. As one can see in the diagram below, a trans-disciplinary approach involves a higher-level synthesis of knowledge and understanding. There is a strong recognition that, with future workplaces impacted by automated technology, increased global connection and career longevity; people will have to move not just across and between but BEYOND disciplines.

What Alison and her faculty present is an affirmation that a holistic, well rounded education is more relevant than ever for our young people to thrive in future workplaces. As educators, it is our role to encourage our students to engage and collaborate with others in the breadth of curricular and extra-curricular activities that we strive to offer at Manly Campus.

Year 11 English Report This week, 11ENAB2 have been working on a range of critical and creative activities to explore and represent the concept of coming-of-age, alongside the novel The Catcher in the Rye and the film Juno. Each student selected four tasks from a Pirozzo Matrix, which combines Bloom’s taxonomy (identify, understand, apply, analyse, create and evaluate) with Gardner’s multiple intelligences (verbal, mathematical, visual, kinaesthetic, musical, interpersonal and intrapersonal) to create a truly differentiated experience for students who can select activities based on interest and skill. Here is a taste of what they produced.

Debating Manly Campus debaters have been busy travelling to various schools as the first stage of the Premier’s Debating Challenge 2018 wraps up for Term 2. In Week 7, the Year 9 and 10 teams won both debates during an enjoyable competition against Pittwater High School. The Year 11 and 12 teams were also successful in their debates against Turramurra High School in Week 8. The Year 11 team successfully argued that ‘Australia should not subsidise print media’ and the Year 12 team presented a convincing case that ‘Australia should distance itself from the United States’.

International Mathematical Modelling Challenge Student Report

Last term, we participated in the International Mathematical Modelling Challenge. Each team was given the task to create a mathematical model to help possible patients to decide which hospital is best for non-emergency situations, taking into account factors such as evitable mortality rate and travel time. We had great fun competing in this challenge over three days, and created the equation above, as well as a twenty-plus page report. Our team were one of 12 teams in the entire country to be chosen as National Finalists. We’d like to thank Ms. Munro and Mr Harris for all of their help in organising this great event, and hope to compete in this challenge next year.

P&C Financial Roles The P&C Treasurer and Canteen Financial Assistant role will become available at the end of this school year.

The P&C Treasurer is responsible for overseeing the financial position of the P&C. This includes preparing a budget, agreeing money owing and payable to the school, receiving and depositing money, authorising expenditure, reporting income and expenditure at P&C meetings, and preparing the year-end accounts. The Treasurer is an executive of the P&C. The role takes on average 1 hour per week.

The Canteen Payroll Officer manages the wages of the canteen staff. This includes setting up for authorisation the fortnightly wage payments, payments to the ATO, employee’s super funds and workers comp. Annual group statements need to be sent too. Basic accounting and MYOB knowledge is useful, but not critical. The role takes on average 30 minutes per week.

We would like to identify interested parents now so that an orderly handover of these roles can occur during the second half of this year.

These are great opportunities to help our wonderful school.

If you are interested in either role, please contact Paul Nuttall (P&C Treasurer) on 0403 960 002 or [email protected]

Term Two Band Meeting, Monday 18 June

Thank you to Cath Whalan, band directors Craig and Mark and the parents who braved a cold, wet evening to attend the band meeting on Monday. It was wonderful to see some new parents there.

The meeting covered upcoming events and plans to test both a new attendance swipe card and a new database system from Term 3.

Rowena Cook (parent of Matthew) was elected as Assistant Treasurer to assist Linda Harte. The committee welcomes her involvement.

Can you help with filing music?

The band committee would appreciate hearing from anyone who could assist with the music library; filing music back into cabinets after use and entering new music purchases into our catalogue system. The library is well organised but needs regular upkeep to maintain it. It would require an hour here and there at times that suit you and ideally during school hours. Our music is a very valuable asset, so we would love to hear if you can help by emailing the Band President, Mel Corner at [email protected].

Attendance required during the School Musical

The band directors remind band members in the school musical they are required to attend rehearsals as normal to enable each ensemble to function effectively and prepare for their competitions in Week 1 next term.

CALL OUT to Manly Campus students and families!

Sunday 12th August 2018

Every year the Bands of Manly Campus are invited to volunteer at the annual City to Surf fun run at Bondi Beach’s finish line to raise funds for our band programs. Our job is fun, simple, and extremely important. Manly Campus is highly regarded by the organisers for our excellent customer service. This is a highlight of our school’s fundraising events.

WHAT WE GET:Lots of fun, beach morning and community spirit!

WHAT WE HAVE TO DO: Take bags belonging to the runners from trucks and place them in numerical order so that when the runners arrive at the finish line we can give the bags back to them.

We get paid for every person who attends: family, friends, this is open to everyone, not just Manly students, although we want to see as many of you there!

In 2017 we raised almost $4000. More people = More $$• Event T-shirt • Morning Tea• Duke of Ed - 4 volunteering hours • School achievement awards for

community service (equivalent to 4 x pink merits)

• Year 10 students 6 hours can go towards your 20 hour volunteering quota.

• 10kg block of chocolate for the school year with most participants

Location: Near finish line at Bondi BeachArrival time: 6:30amEstimated finish time: 10-11am (due to road closures)Parking: Limited car parking is available, so car-pooling is a must! If you can bring a car full of people let us know ASAP- we aim to get you a parking permit at a nearby car park. There are shuttle buses to take us from the car park to the beach.Contact: Call Monique Pardavi on 0423 803 851, or email [email protected] to volunteer for this event by 6 July 2018. Everyone is welcome.
