HIROSHIMA - Mazda Motor Corporation unveiled two concept mod- els, the Mazda KAI CONCEPT and the Mazda VISION COUPE at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show recently. Organized by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association. The Mazda KAI CONCEPT compact hatch- back heralds a new generation of Mazda cars. Featuring the next- generation SKYACTIV-X gasoline engine, SKYACTIV-Vehicle Architec- ture and a more mature expression of the KODO design language, the model embodies the technology, engineering and design concepts that will define the next generation of Mazda cars. Refinements in all areas of dynamic performance have produced a dramatically quieter, more comfortable ride and an enhanced perfor- mance feel. The KAI CONCEPT features muscular, solid proportions and its form is brought to life by a delicate flow of reflections over the body sides. The VISION COUPE represents Mazda's design vision for next-generation models; a more mature expression of KODO applies a Japanese aesthetic to achieve more elegant and premium styling. The exterior features a "one motion" form that exudes a sense of speed and the interior combines three-dimensional depth with a strong longitudinal axis to create a relaxed space that maintains a sense of speed. Canadian housing starts rose to 223k units in October (on a seasonally adjusted annualized basis), up from 219k units in September. The 6-month moving average increased to 217k (previously 215k). The increase was concentrated in the multi-unit segment, with starts up 12.5% month-on-month, following a decrease during the month prior. Meanwhile, single-family starts fell by 17% in October. Ontario (- 18k) continued to be a weak spot, with homebuilding activity declining sharply for a second consecutive month. Starts in Ontario are now down nearly 40% from August's robust level. On the flipside, B.C. (+16k) and Quebec (+8k) recorded solid increases in new home construction. Housing starts in Toronto (-7k) also declined for a second straight month while starts in Vancouver nearly doubled, reaching a 12-month high. The gains in Vancouver were driven by the multi-unit segment. Key Implications " Ontario might be a weak spot, but healthy activity else- where helped starts pick up in October. And, with the 6-month moving average holding well-above the 200k mark, activity remains at quite healthy levels. " Going forward, the impact of recent interest rate hikes - plus a strong possibility of another early next year - combined with the recently announced B20 regulations which could also weigh on demand, will likely lead to further declines in new home construc- tion in the coming quarters. Indeed, we expect starts to gradually trend down toward the 190k mark over the next year, roughly consistent with demographic demand. VITAMIN D MAY BOOST RECOVERY IN BURN PATIENTS LONDON, (IANS) Patients with severe burns who have higher levels of Vitamin D recover more successfully than those with lower levels, researchers claimed to have found. A study that is claimed to be the first to investigate the role of Vitamin D in recovery from burn injuries suggests that Vitamin D supplemen- tation may be a simple and cost-effective treatment to enhance burn healing, the researchers said. "Major burn injury severely reduces Vitamin D levels and adding this vitamin back may be a simple, safe and cost-effective way to improve outcomes for burns patients, with minimal cost to NHS," said Janet Lord, Pro- fessor at the Institute of Inflammation and Aging in Birmingham. Vitamin D is known to have antibacterial actions that may help combat infection and therefore aid in wound healing of burn pa- tients. In order to investigate the role of Vitamin D in recovery from burn injuries, researchers assessed the recovery progress, over one year, in patients with severe burns and correlated this with their Vitamin D levels. The study, presented at the Society for Endocrinology annual conference in Harrogate, found that patients with higher levels of Vitamin D had a better prognosis, with improved wound healing, fewer complications, and less scarring. The data also showed that burns patients tend to have lower levels of Vitamin D.

HUMAN STEM CELLS MAY PAVE WAY FOR DIABETES TREATMENT

Poor knowledge ofbody parts mayhamper healthcareLONDON, (IANS) Researchershave found that health screeningcampaigns that target a specificorgan may lack effectiveness ifthe public have a poor knowledgeof anatomy. "Whilst many of thepublic do not have or need formalanatomical knowledge, it is ben-eficial in monitoring and explain-ing their own health," said AdamTaylor, Director of the ClinicalAnatomy Learning Centre andSenior Lecturer in Anatomy atBritain's Lancaster University. The study, published in the Jour-nal Anatomical Sciences Educa-tion, found that middle-aged non-graduates scored better thanyoung graduates in an anatomi-cal quiz given to the public by theresearchers. Members of thepublic were asked to place bodypar ts l ike the brain, cornea, lungs, liver, diaphragm, hear t,stomach, appendix, bladder, kid-neys, pancreas, gal lb ladder, spleen, adrenals, thyroid, ham-strings, biceps, triceps, quadri-ceps, cruciate l igament andAchilles tendon on a blank tem-plate of a human body.

LONDON, (IANS) Human stem cells can be used to produceinsulin-producing cells that in the future can be transplanted intodiabetes patients, a new study has shown. Globally, 415 millionpeople have been diagnosed with diabetes. These people lack theability to produce sufficient amounts of insulin, which regulates theblood sugar in the body. This can lead to a number of complicationsand in many cases be potentially fatal. The findings showed thatregulation of cell polarity is the key to the development of manyother human cell types, for example nerve cells as well fortransmitting signals in neurons.Cell polarity is the asymmetric organisation of several cellularcomponents, including its plasma membrane, cytoskeleton ororganelles. In the study, published in the journal Nature CellBiology, the researchers examined how the body creates thecomplex piping systems that transpor t fluids and gases in ourorgans to understand the machinery for instructing progenitor cellsinto their different destinies."By identifying the signals that instruct mouse progenitor cells tobecome cells that make tubes and later insulin-producing betacells, we can transfer this knowledge to human stem cells to morerobustly make beta cells," said Henrik Semb, Professor at theUniversity of Copenhagen in Denmark. The researchers discoveredthat the same signal -- the so-called epidermal growth factor (EGF)

applies to the development of human cells. "Now we can use thisknowledge to more efficiently turn human stem cells into beta cellsin the laboratory with the hope to use them to replace lost beta cellsin patients suffering from diabetes," Semb stated.

pathway - controls both the formation of pipes and beta cellsthrough polarity changes. "Therefore, the development of pancreaticprogenitor into beta cells depends on their orientation in the pipes,"the researchers explained. While the study was mainly based on tests per formed on mice, theresearchers found that the same cell maturation mechanism

LACK OF PROPER COMMUNICATIONMAY INCREASE HEALTH PROBLEMSNEW YORK, (IANS) Are you left out by your friends due toimproper communicative techniques? Beware, as it maytake a toll on your health. New research reveals that peoplewith poor social skills may be at a greater risk of developingmental as well as physical health problems. Social skillsrefer to the communication skills that allow people tointeract effectively and appropriately with others. They aremostly learned over time, originating in the family andcontinuing throughout life. The use of technology, liketexting, is probably one of the biggest impediments todeveloping social skills among young people nowadays, theresearchers said."We have known for a long time that social skills areassociated with mental health problems like depression andanxiety," said Chrin Segrin, professor at the University ofArizona. "But it was not known definitively that social skills

were also predictive of poorer physical health. Two variables -- loneliness and stress -- appear to be the glue that bind poorsocial skills to health. People with poor social skills have highlevels of stress and loneliness in their lives," Segrin added. The researchers studied over 775 people, aged between 18 to91 years, and were provided a questionnaire addressing theirsocial skills, stress, loneliness, and mental and physicalhealth. The results found that the par ticipants who had deficits inthose skills repor ted more stress, loneliness, and poorermental and physical health. The study, published in the journalHealth Communication, mentioned that while the negativeeffects of stress on the body have been known for a long time, loneliness is a more recently recognized health risk factor. Itis as serious a risk as smoking, obesity or eating a high-fatdiet with lack of exercise.

LONDON, (IANS) Post-natal depression -- a common phe-nomenon among new mothers -- also occurs in new fathers. However, depression in new fathers is often not recognised, thus increasing their risk of developing serious mental healthissues, a study has showed. The findings showed that de-pression among new fathers is characterised by irritation, restlessness, low stress tolerance and lack of self-control. Itmay be more common than previously believed, but remainsundetected in current screening instruments, thus strippingthem of the help they need.Detecting depression in new parents is crucial, not only fortheir own sake but also because depressed parents oftenbecome less perceptive to the needs of their child, par ticu-larly if the child cries a lot. Babies of depressed parents alsotend to receive less stimulation which, eventually, could leadto slower development. In some cases, depression may leadto neglect of the child or inappropriately forceful behaviours, the researchers said. "Depression does not only involve majorsuffering for the parent, but also a risk for the child," said EliaPsouni, associate professor at Lund University in Sweden.Fur ther, all new mothers were found to be screened for de-pression, while fathers are not, the study showed. For thestudy, detailed in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology, the team examined 447 new fathers and showed that theestablished method of detecting depression Edinburgh PostnatalDepression Scale (EPDS) works poorly on men. In addition, one-third ofthe depressed fathers in the study had thoughts of hurting themselves, but very few contacted the healthcare system. Among those who wereclassified being moderately to severely depressed, 83 percent had not shared their suffering with anyone. Althoughdifficult to know, the corresponding figure for new mothers isbelieved to be 20-50 per cent, the researchers said.
