SAIYAMI KHER GERMANY - Subaru of America, Inc. has announced that the Subaru WRX STI Type RA NBR Special set a new lap record for a four-door sedan at the famous 12.8-mile Nürburgring Nordschleife race track, achieving a time of 6:57.5. The WRX STI Type RA NBR Special is a custom built race car built by Prodrive using a stock 2017 WRX STI with a full roll cage welded into the standard WRX STI unibody for added strength and stiffness. It has a modified 2.0-liter Subaru WRC- spec boxer motor. It uses a 75-mm intake, and the turbo runs at 25 psi of boost. This produces more than 600 horsepower at 8,500 rpm. Prodrive calculated the top speed at the 'Ring would be 179 mph at 8,500 rpm in top gear. The car has 9-inch-wide slick tires all around. It uses a WRC gearbox with an auto- matic clutch, modified with hydraulics for paddle-shift operation. Shift times are some of the fastest at 20 to 25 milliseconds. A redesigned aero- package, different than last year's TT car set up, delivers improved handling and top speed on the NBR Special. At top speed the whole package produces about 650 pounds of downforce. TORONTO - Toronto Real Estate Board President Tim Syrianos announced that Greater Toronto Area REALTORS® reported 5,921 residential transactions through TREB's MLS System in July 2017. This result was down by 40.4 per cent on a year-over-year basis, led by the detached market segment - both in the City of Toronto and surrounding regions. While sales were down, the number of new listings reported were only slightly (+5.1 per cent) above last year's level. "A recent release from the Ontario government confirmed TREB's own research which found that foreign buyers represented a small proportion of overall home buying activity in the GTA. Clearly, the year-over-year decline we experienced in July had more to do with psychology, with would-be home buyers on the sidelines waiting to see how market conditions evolve," said Mr. Syrianos. "Summer market statistics are often not the best indicators of housing market conditions. We generally see an uptick in sales following Labour Day, as a greater cross-section of would-be buyers and sellers start to consider listing and/or purchasing a home. As we move through the fall, we should start to get a better sense of the impacts of the Fair Housing Plan and higher borrowing costs," said TREB CEO John DiMichele. The MLS® Home Price Index (HPI) Composite Benchmark price was up by 18 per cent on a year-over-year basis. However, the Composite Benchmark was down by 4.6 per cent relative to June. Monthly MLS® HPI declines were driven more so by single-family home types. The average selling price for all home types combined was up by five per cent year-over-year to $746,218. "Home buyers benefitted from more choice in the market this July compared to the same time last year. This was reflected in home prices and home price growth. Looking forward, if we do see some would-be home buyers move off the sidelines and back into the market without a similar increase in new listings, we could see some of this newfound choice erode. The recent changes in the sales and price trends have masked the fact that housing supply remains an issue in the GTA," said Jason Mercer, TREB's Director of Market Analysis. Lack of Vitamin E may affect learning skills in babies NEW YORK, (IANS) Babies who lacked vitamin E nourish- ment when in the womb are likely to be at an increased risk of developing impairments in mental skills such as learning and metabolic problems, a research has showed. The study, conducted on zebrafish because their neurological develop- ment is similar to that of humans, showed that vitamin E- deficient embryos of zebrafish had more deformities and greater incidence of death as well as an altered DNA methylation status through five days after fertilisation - the time it takes for a fertilised egg to become a swimming zebrafish. However, even after being fed with vitamin E-adequate diet, after their birth, these fish failed to learn and were found afraid. Although "they managed to get through the critical period to get the brain formed, they were stupid and didn't learn and didn't respond right", said Maret Traber, Professor at the Oregon State Univer- sity (OSU) in the US. As a result of vitamin E deficiency, the brains of these embryos' continued to lack choline and glucose and simply did not develop correctly, Traber added. The problem may be exacerbated in women of child-bearing age who avoid high-fat foods and may not have a diet rich in oils, nuts and seeds, which are among the foods with the highest levels of vitamin E, an antioxidant necessary for normal embryonic development in vertebrates, the researchers said.

SRK AND ANUSHKA SHARMA - JAB HARRY MET SEJAL ON A FLOWERY DINNER DATE!

MONETARY INCENTIVES DO LITTLETO SPUR GYM-GOING: STUDY

NEW YORK, (IANS) If you are hitting the gym less frequently than youdid at the star t, take hear t. Some people, a new study suggests, cannot make their commitment stick even when they are paid toexercise. The experiment involved more than 800 new members of aprivate gym in the US. Despite timing incentives to when people werealready more motivated to exercise, the incentives proved ineffectivein initiating a healthy behaviour, according to results that appeared ina National Bureau of Economic Research working paper."They wanted to exercise regularly, and yet their behaviour did notmatch their intent, even with a reward," said co-author of thestudy Mariana Carrera, Assistant Professor at the WeatherheadSchool of Management, Case Western Reserve Universi ty inCleveland, Ohio. "People thought earning the incentive would beeasy but were way overoptimistic about how often they'd go,"Carrera said. The members intended to visit three times per weekbut ended up averaging one weekly visit by the end of the six-week study.

For visiting the gym nine total times during the study (an averageof 1.5 times per week), par ticipants were promised one of threemodest rewards - a $30 Amazon gift card; a prize item, such as ablender, of equivalent value; or a $60 Amazon gif t card. A controlgroup received a $30 Amazon gift card regardless of how oftenthey visited. After the first week, 14 per cent did not visit the gymagain. Incentivised par ticipants showed a slight increase in gymvisits in the sixth week - their last chance to make enough visitsto earn their prize. But overall, those given incentives made only0.14 more visits per week than those promised no reward at all.The group promised the $60 gift card also did not visit the gymmore often than those given the $30 gift card or prize. Research-ers thought that selecting the prize item at the outset might createa sense of ownership and prove to be a more powerful motivator, because failing to hit the target visit rate might feel like a loss. How-ever, while the item induced slightly more visits, the difference wasinsignificant, the study said.

GO BIG WITH DECOR IDEASFOR SMALL SPACENEW DELHI, (IANS) If you are living in a small home or are planning toshift to a studio apartment, make the most out of the space by choosingthe right colour schemes, decor and furniture, say experts. SurabhiMittal, founder, RevivedbySurabhi, and Purba Kalita, co-founder,SaleBhai.com, share some decor ideas to get the most out of smallspace.* Opt for hidden storages: In a small apartment, visible storages suchas cabinets, baskets and boxes may make your space look cluttered. The ideal solution would be to opt for hidden storages. The key ismaking use of all the empty spaces such as the crawl space under-neath the stairs, empty space under the bed or even the gaps beneaththe floor boards.* Invest in multifunctional furniture: While choosing furniture, go formultifunctional ones. That's the best you can do to make the most ofyour small space. For instance, look for a storage ottoman that can bereplaced as a coffee table or opt for a foldable dining table. Do not pick bulkyfurniture that may make your rooms look cramped and cluttered. Choosefurnishings of the right size and the ones that lighten up the space.

TIPS FOR NUDE MAKE-UP LOOKNEW DELHI, (IANS) Applying a black mascara, choosing a naturalshade that compliments your skin and subtle rose or baby pink lipcolour - these are the basic rules that one needs to follow to perfectthe ar t of nude make-up look, say exper ts. Annanya Sabarwal, Coun-try Head, KIKO Milano India, and Aakriti Kochar, Beauty and Make-upExper t, Oriflame India, list down things to keep in mind:* For nude make-up look, apply a black mascara on your eyelashesto give your eyes a natural look, while beautifying them by curling thelashes. Then for a trick, apply a black kajal only in the upper innercorner. The effect will be of a bold and more dense lashes, creating aneye-look focus on the lashes. To enhance the nude look, apply ahighlighter eyeshadow over all the eyelid and contour the eyelid witha bronzer.* To bring a natural glow to your cheeks, just apply a highlighter on your cheek-bones instead of fully contouring your skin with make-up. Choose a natural shade

that compliments your skin tone to give a simple nude make-up look.* As the nude make-up look does not allow any vibrant colours, thelips could be done by using a subtle rose or baby pink to add someluminosity to the face. To neutralise the effect of the lip colour, a hintof transparent gloss over the lipstick could do wonders for a nudemake-up look.* One may use a single lipstick to create such look - soft wash on theeyes, flush of lipstick on the cheeks. Apply using your fingers and dabon gently against your skin and not rub it. Apply lipstick generously, groom your brows and put mascara your lashes to complete the look.* When choosing the nude make-up look, keep the shades in mono-tone that is different tones in same colour family.* Use a light base to even out the skin tone first before applying nudeshades. Use loose powder wherever necessary but keep it minimaland let your skin shine through.

NEW YORK, (IANS) Researchers have identified three distinct, reli-ably recognised expressions of smile - reward, affiliation and domi-nance - and the facial muscle combinations that make them. Each smilehinges on an anatomical feature known as the zygomaticus major, straps offacial muscle below the cheekbones that pull up the corners of the mouth, theresearchers said."There are so many words people use to describe different smiles, but we seethem as describing subtypes of a reward situation or an affiliative situation or asituation of negotiating hierarchy and having disdain for someone else," saidPaula Niedenthal, Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.According to researchers, reward smile is "probably the most intuitive".This is "the kind of smile you would use with a baby, so he will smile backor do things you like", Niedenthal said.

THREE TYPES OF SMILES DECODEDIt is a like a symmetrical hoist of zygomaticus muscles plus a dash of eyebrowlift and some sharp lip pulling. On the other hand, affiliative smiles - used tocommunicate tolerance, acknowledgment or a bond and show that you are not athreat - comes with a similar symmetrical upturn to the mouth, but spread widerand thinner with pressed lips and no exposed teeth. The third smile in the categoryis dominance smiles and is used to signify status and manage social hierar-chies. This smile dispenses with the symmetry, pairing a bit of lopsided sneerwith the raised brows and lifted cheeks typically associated with expressingenjoyment, the researchers said. In the study, published in the journalPsychological Science, par ticipants looked at thousands of com-puter-generated expressions with random combinations of facialmuscles activated. But each smile included some action from the zygo-maticus - or the 'smile muscle'.

WEAK TASTE BUDS MAYLEAD TO WEIGHT GAINNEW YORK, (IANS) People with a reduced ability to taste foodchoose sweeter - and likely higher-calorie - fare, thereby pav-ing the way for gaining unhealthy weight, says a study. "Wefound that the more people lost sensitivity to sweetness, themore sugar they wanted in their foods," said lead author RobinDando, Assistant Professor at Cornell University in Ithaca, NewYork. In this research published online by the journal Appetite,Dando temporarily dulled the taste buds of study par ticipantsand had them sample foods of varying sugar concentrations. For the blind tests, the researchers provided par ticipants withan herbal tea with low, medium or high concentrations of anaturally occurring herb, Gymnema Sylvestre, which is knownto temporarily block sweet receptors. During the testing, par-ticipants added their favoured levels of sweetness to bland con-coctions. The researchers found that those par ticipants withtheir taste receptors blocked began to prefer higher concentra-tions of sugar. "Others have suggested that the overweight mayhave a reduction in their perceived intensity of taste.

Child abuse, neglect linked togender inequality, finds study

NEW YORK, (IANS) Children growing up in societies that experience high level of gender inequality aremore likely to be maltreated, finds a studythat identified a link between child abuse, neglect and gender inequality. The researchfound that the rate of physical abuse of chil-dren varied between 1 and 43 per cent, whilechild neglect rates stood between 0.8 and49 per cent.Rates of discrimination against women sub-stantially influence the levels of child physi-cal abuse and child neglect, said JoanneKlevens from the Centre for Disease Controland Prevention in the US. For the study, published in the journal Family Violence, the team analysed datafrom 57 countries on incidences of severe physical discipline of children in the form of hitting, slapping orrepeated beatings or child neglect.Approximately 44 per cent of the countries had a high or very high level of human development, but one-third were considered to have low human development. The data was based on surveys conducted by theUN International Children's Emergency Fund (Unicef) and Demographic and Health Surveys conducted bythe United States Agency for International Development (USAID) from 2011 to 2015.Using the Social and Institutional Gender Index (SIGI) and the Gender Gap Index (GGI), the researchers assessed theimpact of gender inequality and the rate of child abuse or neglect in each country. Based on the findings, efforts to prevent childabuse and neglect might benefit from reducing gender inequity, the researchers noted.

INVEST IN OUTDOOR FURNITURE DURING MONSOONNEW DELHI, (IANS) During the rainy season, sitting outside and soakingin the pleasant weather has a different charm altogether. Invest inhanging chair, teak wood carved swings and wicker furniture for en-joying the experience, suggest exper ts. Surabhi Mittal, founder atRevived by Surabhi, and Sunil Gupta, founder and Director atExpor tersIndia.com, have listed a few options:* Outdoor hanging chair: Choose a durable material such as castmetal. Alternatively, it may fit in the balcony with a rope swing bedwhich can be adorned with lovely cushions and seating.* Garden table and chair or stool set: A garden table and chair set canbe an excellent addition to the furniture collection this monsoon. Pur-chase one in light plastic or black metal. One made entirely of woodis best avoided as it can deteriorate significantly due to high moisture

content and dampness in the air.* Brass stools: Brass stools give a regal appearance to any home orgarden. This type of furniture is an excellent fit for a garden during themonsoon season as it does not have any long term or adverse effectsfrom exposure to moisture or damp air. Also, such stools do not takeup much space, and can be doubled as a comfor table outdoor seatingfurniture and foot stool.* Teak wood carved swings: Teak is one of the most popular materi-als in wood, and is used in both furniture and flooring. This type ofwood is also used in making garden swings, a beautiful and so-phisticated addition to any patio. Buy teak wood based swingsthat have intricate carvings for that added glamour to the outdoorseating area.

Drinking 3-4 times a week maykeep diabetes at bayLONDON, (IANS) Alcohol has its bad side but moderate drink-ing - three to four times a week - may keep diabetes at bay, researchers claim. According to the team from the NationalInstitute of Public Health at University of Southern Denmark, alcohol consumption for three-four times a week is associ-ated with a reduced risk of diabetes in both men and women."Our findings suggest that alcohol drinking frequency is asso-ciated with the risk of diabetes and that consumption of alco-hol over 3-4 weekdays is associated with the lowest risks ofdiabetes, even after taking average weekly alcohol consump-tion into account," the authors wrote in a paper published inthe journal Diabetologia. The study, by Professor JanneTolstrup and colleagues, examined the effects of drinking fre-quency on diabetes risk, and also considered association withspecific beverage types. The study used data from the Danish Health Examination Sur-vey (DAHNES) from 2007-2008, in which Danish citizens aged18 and over completed a self-repor ting questionnaire includ-ing items on lifestyle and health. Those who already had diag-nosed diabetes were excluded, as were women who werepregnant or had recently given bir th. The study comprised70,551 par t ic ipants who had given detai ls of alcoholconsumption.Consumption of specific beverage types - wine, beer and spirits - was coded as less than one drink per week,1-6 drinks per week and 7 or more drinks per week for womenand 7-13 and 14 or more drinks per week for men. Duringfollow up, 859 men and 887 women developed diabetes. Menconsuming 14 drinks per week were found to have a 43 percent lower risk of diabetes relative to no alcohol intake, andwomen consuming 9 drinks per week had a 58 per cent lowerrisk compared with women who did not drink at all.

Playing musical instrumentmay boost brain'saudio-motor connectLONDON, (IANS) Is your son or daughter keen on learningto play a guitar or piano? Allow them, as according to astudy, playing any musical instrument throughout life mayhelp improve the connection between the brain's hearingarea and the motor zone. The findings showed that musicaltraining produces an increase in audio-motor interactionsin the right hemisphere at rest."This indicates that when a musician trains and spendsmany years learning to play a musical instrument, thereare more effective connections between the auditory andmotor systems, which are the regions mainly involved inplaying an instrument," said Maraa Angeles Palomar-Garcia, researcher at the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) in Spain.Fur ther, the research also revealed an adaptation in musi-cians' brain areas responsible for controlling hand move-ment. Specifically, par ticipants with musical training hadreduced connectivity between the motor regions that con-trol both hands, but may have greater autonomy betweentheir hands. This, "may reflect a greater skill with both hands for thesemusicians, compared to the par ticipants who had no musi-cal training, due to the need to use both hands in an inde-pendent and coordinated way to play their instrument,"Palomar-Garcia explained. For the study, published in thejournal Cerebral Cor tex, the team studied the impact ofmusic training on the brain through both functional and struc-tural images of the brain in rest through high field magneticresonance imaging. The study also revealed a degree of brain plasticity, whichindicates that the brain is able to adapt itself. "Studieson brain plasticity associated with learning are funda-mental to understanding the factors that determine theflexibility of the brain to adapt to a particular situation,"says César Avila.

According to the team from theNational Institute of Public Health at University of SouthernDenmark, alcohol consumption for three-four times a weekis associated with a reduced risk of diabetes in both menand women."Our findings suggest that alcohol drinking frequency isassociated with the risk of diabetes and that consumptionof alcohol over 3-4 weekdays is associated with the lowestrisks of diabetes, even after taking average weekly alcoholconsumption into account," the authors wrote in a paperpublished in the journal Diabetologia. The study, by Profes-sor Janne Tolstrup and colleagues, examined the effects ofdrinking frequency on diabetes risk, and also consideredassociation with specific beverage types. The study used data from the Danish Health ExaminationSurvey (DAHNES) from 2007-2008, in which Danish citi-zens aged 18 and over completed a self-repor ting ques-tionnaire including items on lifestyle and health. Playing musical instrument may boost brain's audio-motor connectLONDON, (IANS) Is your son or daughter keen on learning toplay a guitar or piano? Allow them, as according to a study, playing any musical instrument throughout life may helpimprove the connection between the brain's hearing area andthe motor zone. The findings showed that musical trainingproduces an increase in audio-motor interactions in the righthemisphere at rest."This indicates that when a musician trains and spends manyyears learning to play a musical instrument, there are moreeffective connections between the auditory and motorsystems, which are the regions mainly involved in playing

an instrument," said Maraa Angeles Palomar-Garcia,researcher at the Universitat Jaume I (UJI) in Spain.Fur ther, the research also revealed an adaptation inmusicians' brain areas responsible for controlling handmovement. Specifically, par ticipants with musicaltraining had reduced connectivity between the motorregions that control both hands, but may have greaterautonomy between their hands. This, "may reflect a greater skill with both hands forthese musicians, compared to the par ticipants who hadno musical training, due to the need to use both hands in

an independent and coordinated way to play their instrument,"Palomar-Garcia explained. NEW YORK, (IANS) Microblogging site Twitter, which is open and acces-sible to anyone, can be used to help predict people engaged in criminalactivity, a study has found. Although "people don't share with the worldthat they intend to or have just committed a crime…(but) they do shareare things like social events or outings that could lead to criminal activ-ity", said Matthew Gerber, Assistant Professor at the University of Vir-ginia in the US.For the study, presented at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Baltimore, theteam developed statistical crime prediction methods which involvedcollecting more than 1.5 million public tweets tagged with Chicago-areaGPS coordinates spanning January to March of 2013 as well as crimerecords covering the same period and geographic area. After dividingand mapping out tweets and crime records onto a grid and identifyingcommon topics of discussion (e.g., spor ts, restaurants, and enter tain-ment) appearing in tweets, Gerber combined conclusions from this analy-sis with older forecasting models to predict crimes over the next month. The result of his combined method was more precise, accurately pre-dicting 19 out of 25 crime types. "Some cities that utilise such methodsas a basis for resource allocation have seen dramatic decreases incrime," Gerber said. The research could assist police depar tments inresource allocation, deciding where and when to deploy officers.
