Halla Way_Work Properly
This column was created as part of practicing “Halla Way, Work Properly,” for global Mando people to share the seven major Work Smart tasks and practice cases.
MDK (Mando Korea) published a practice casebook in July by organizing excellent “work
smart” cases collected with “Open Communication,” which was started in 2015. This
casebook will be distributed to employees in order for each department to refer, apply
and practice them. Composed of five chapters (smart report, smart meeting, smart time
management, work and life balance, and other cases), the casebook introduces 21 ex-
cellent cases in an easy Q&A form.
Mando Network selected notable representative cases among the contents of the case-
book and introduces them to global readers to share.
The story of us, who practice changesMDK Publishes “Seven Work Smart Tasks, Excellent Practice Casebook”
MDK (Mando Korea) R&V Test Center declared “Zero PPT Documents for Internal Purposes in Center” as a 2018 OC activity. When employees re-
ported in the past, they usually made PowerPoint documents. However, there was a problem of wasting time since they made even simple reports
into PPT files. To reduce such wasteful elements, an activity to eliminate PPT documents when reporting to the insiders of the center was started.
Smart Report Starts with PPT ZeroContents Rather Than Forms! MDK, R&V Test Center Case
How are you executing PPT Zero?
In the R&V Test Center, basic reporting to the head of cen-
ter or below is made without PPT. Instead, the reporter con-
centrates the contents by using Excel and Word. Recently,
as even these are regarded as unnecessary, employees
try to use e-mail and verbal reporting more often if possi-
ble. Of course, the data provided to external customers are
sometimes created as PPT files. Also, an activity called “one
page, one hour” is being conducted to maximize the im-
provement of report culture. This means finishing a meeting
in an hour by making a one-page document. Unnecessary
Of course, every report has its own purpose. However, those
who make the reports actually think a lot about what font they
will use and what picture they will explain. Actually, there was
some doubt about reporting without PPTs among our de-
partment members. But as we practiced it, an atmosphere of
concentrating on contents rather than forms has been formed
naturally and work efficiency has been clearly raised since the
speed of work and decision making was quickened.
The companies that practiced PPT Zero before us showed
positive effects of increased work efficiency, which led to
achievements. Jeff Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, prohibited
PPT presentations that lowered work efficiency and had
employees read reports descriptively in a flexible way, and
Hyundai Card of Korea banned unnecessary PPTs to con-
centrate on the content rather than the form. As a result, it’s
said that since PPT Zero, not only work speed and efficien-
cy, but also employee satisfaction have increased because
they could focus on the essence of work.
Practicing PPT Zero can be the starting point for concise reports
free from formalities and a creative reporting culture with horizon-
tal communication. Smart Reporting Starts with PPT Zero!

Various MDK Organizational Activities to Avoid PPT Reporting
Is PPT Zero actually settled well?
What has PPT Zero changed?
attachments to QPR meeting data are prohibited. If neces-
sary, employees use existing photographs or documents or
bring the actual item. In addition, duplicated or similar meet-
ings were merged to reduce the number of reports.
At first, some people doubted whether the PPT Zero activity
would be operated well. But the head of the R&V Test Center
took the lead and sent the message “Zero PPT documents”
by email to all members, and this led those who were hesi-
tant about changing to actively participate. It has now settled
as a culture.
The head of the center delivers messages directly to employees to reduce unnecessary PPT (Excel is accepted for materials reported to the head of the center and reports are made based on materi-als which center on hands-on work without formalities).
Reports to the head of department or below are made with Excel/Word, and PPT is avoided if possible.
Excel is used for internal reports and PPT is used only for external reports.Global Sales & Marketing Market Development

Diagnosing Future Innovations
Global Automotive Executive Survey 2018
If we know today, we can prepare for tomorrow better. The
Global Automotive Executive Survey, which is conducted
every year by Samjong KPMG, a global accounting firm, is
picked as the best annual evaluation of the present and fu-
ture of global automotive industry. The 19th survey in 2018
collected the opinions of 900 management staff members
of the automotive industry such as car makers, suppliers,
and ICT companies from 43
countries.
The most eye-catching result
was that the no. 1 key trend that
will lead automotive industry by
2025 was considered to be “fuel
cell electric vehicles” (FCEV), not autonomous vehicles.
And “connectivity and digitalization” and “electric battery
vehicles” took the second and third places, respectively.
The respondents said that the increase in eco-friendly car
production is the result of continuous demand growth, and
it was analyzed that by 2040 certain eco-friendly car pow-
ertrain technologies would not monopolize the market. With
this analysis, they expressed doubt about claims that the
internal combustion engine vehicles, which currently domi-
nates the market, will disappear.
Also, 94% of the respondents were optimistic about pros-
pects for autonomous vehicles and expected that policies
and regulations for them would be organized and settled
by 2040. Some expressed concern that safety issues will
continuously occur in the period when non-autonomous ve-
hicles and autonomous vehicles coexist.
Do Not Stop, Even at Intersections
With Smart Traffic Lights
If you continuously had green lights while driving, you would
feel lucky all day. What if you could feel such a pleasant mood
all the time while driving?
Such an enjoyable experiment is being conducted on a road
in the York area of England. It is an intelligent transportation
management system called “smart traffic light.” It notifies an
appropriate speed to drivers in advance 100 meters before
an intersection without stopping
the vehicle. In other words, it is a
system that helps drivers just keep
driving as long as they drive at the
notified speed without encounter-
ing a red light at intersections.
The smart traffic light driving system is manufactured by
AECOM, an engineering company. It helps vehicles arrive
at their destination without traffic jams by controlling traffic
lights by understanding traffic flow. It was manufactured to
ease traffic congestion and reduce exhaust gas.
“I’m excited and wondering how automotive and infrastruc-
ture convergence technology will affect our lives,” said
Header Hawkins, the CEO of AECOM.
An Innovation in Automobile Ownership
Car Sharing
Chairman Masayoshi Son of Softbank in Japan said, “All
the ways people move will change in 30~50 years.”
He predicts that car sharing platforms will be consumed in
the most appropriate way in the era of full-fledged autono-
mous driving. The size of the global car sharing market is
sharply rising. The market size of USD 36 billion last year is
expected to reach USD 285 billion in 2030. Not much time
will be required to for the concept of vehicle ownership to
change to that of sharing.
The consulting company McKinsey & Company forecast
that general consumer purchas-
es of vehicles will be reduced by
a maximum of 4 million units by
2030, while the sale of vehicles for
sharing will increase by 2 million
units from the current level.
The market for car sharing is expected to increase, particu-
larly in cities, where traffic congestion is severe and parking
spaces are seriously scarce. If autonomous vehicles are
introduced around 2020 as the starting year, as the number
of accidents and incidents dramatically decrease and traffic
flow becomes much smoother, the growth of the car sharing
market will be accelerated.

Sr. Manager, MCA Innovation Center
I was fortunate enough to join Mando in September 2007 as a supervisor of Brake Corner Module Assembly. Wow, I still cannot forget that first night. The
amazing assembly lines and team members who so quickly embraced me, a humble person, as part of their team are still vivid to me. I was privileged to
have a terrific team and incredible mentors as soon as I joined. Then, in May 2010, I was thankfully selected as manager of the Brake Department as MCA
grew. Shortly thereafter, in January 2011, I was selected as manager of the Strut Department during a structural transformation from a department system
to business units at MCA. There was so much to learn during this time as I acclimated myself from brakes to suspension. Thus far in my career at MCA I have
been fortunate to be associated with so many wonderful people that embraced a “team” environment and supported me along my journey.

The MCA Innovation Center, which will be Re-sponsible for the Future of MCAThe MCA Corporate Innovation Center, which was estab-
lished in October 2017 as the leader of plant process and
business plan innovation, has a system to report directly
to the head of MCA. I am so honored to represent part of
the Innovation Center as plant process innovation manager.
This team has adopted HPS implementation and plant pro-
ductivity improvement activities, and most recently applied
“My Line Beautification” philosophies to our Alabama and
Georgia plants. In fact, the very first certificate was award-
ed to our Caliper Assembly Line 7 Team in recognition for
completing all phases of “My Line Beautification” principles.
Finally, I must say that for myself I again have an extraordi-
nary Team which has the drive and motivation necessary to
help make the MCA Innovation Center an essential part of
future success for our MCA Organization. It has truly been
my privilege to be a part of the MCA Family.
The first thing I noticed when I joined the MCA Innovation
Center was that the productivity and scrap costs of MCA
plants were not formatted uniformly or consistently when
they were reported to the head of MCA. We worked together
and implemented a consistent format for each plant, so there
would be no confusion of the data, and this data could assist
our head of MCA to make conscious business decisions.
Now, we implement a weekly update for each plant to iden-
tify where their work center is in regard to the production
goals for our 2018 business plan. We can address specific
issues, and each team can attack those issues to improve
productivity and reduce scrap cost by the end of the month.
Also, the Innovation Center has acquired HPS implemen-
tation for MCA plants and has made efforts to change the
objective of our HEE’s by developing bilingual HPS element
teams for the first time.
Become One Body and Go Together Toward the FutureI cannot say enough about my team. Each member has ex-
traordinary talents and works diligently to accomplish their
tasks such as “My Line Beautification” an on-going project.
The Innovation Center was also fortunate to have a talent like
Mr. Kang In-koo from MDK (Mando Korea) as a mentor for
our MCA- A1 team with the pilot line (Caliper Line 7) project
for this project, and it reached its goal to attain a certificate
for “My Line Beautification” on schedule. He handed down
his admirable experience and much knowledge despite such
a brief stay.
I hope by now that you can tell that my belief in “Team” has
been advantageous to my career, and there is no “I” in the
word “Team.”
I hope there will be no self-inflicted barriers to communica-
tion between our MCA plants. With the implementation of
our new organizational structure it is more important than
ever before that we communicate with a true “One Body”
emphasis to succeed.
During the past few weeks while writing this I looked back on
what our MCA Family really means for us. We as a family
are a caring and passionate people, and I hope we can use
our fundamental beliefs as a family to build a prosperous
future together.

A Gift of Nature that Glows with the FestivalKorea’s west coast is famous for mudflats rather than sand.
A mudflat is a gift of nature created by a long sedimen-
tation and is a rich repository of various living resources.
Although the broad mudflats of Korea are rare resources in
the world, they were regarded as not being suitable for sea
bathing because of the mud. However, the area become a
great resort with a conceptual shift.
The natural mud of the mudflats in Boryeong, Korea, are
full of sea minerals. It is also excellent for skin care as it
contains far-infrared radiation, minerals, and germanium.

It started as a small regional festival, and marked the 21st edition this year. Tourists from all over the world gather here to enjoy this time. During the summer,
an energetic mud festival is held on the west coast of Korea. Let’s leave for a place where international people emit their energy while sprinkling mud on
each other’s bodies under the hot sun even though they are unable to communicate with each other.
· 11
Boryeong developed natural cosmetics using mud and has long
promoted them. The first Boryeong Mud Festival, held in 1998,
started to publicize regional cosmetics. It was designed to have
people apply mud on their body to experience its effect.
With the diversification of the experience of applying mud, the main
program was loved by tourists. As a spectacle where a crowd of
people are struck by mud at the same time, which is reminiscent
of Songkran, Thailand’s water festival, was promoted naturally by
word-of-mouth, the number of foreign tourists who only visit Korea
to see this festival is increasing. During the festival period, a variety
of rides are installed such as a large mud bath, mud super slide,
mud sliding, and a mud prison. The event place is busy with the
coming and going tourists with mud smeared on them. In the family
zone, children play in the kid’s mud land and mud air bounce.
60 Different Programs to Fully Enjoy SummerFrom a street parade that crosses the downtown heralding the start
of the festival to a world mud skin care contest, MUDEM, where
mud and EDM are combined, opening and closing ceremonies and
K-pop performances, a variety of events and programs are provid-
ed. The games in the large mud bath are among the most popular.
Transcending the bounds of nationality and gender, people enjoy the
festival while holding each other’s hands even though they have not
met before.
If the mud is hardened under the hot sun, people run to the beach
and jump into the sea. This is another kind of fun that is enjoyed
here. As the photograph contest is held during festival period where
you can make memory as photograph, you may want to decorate
yourself with colored mud body painting.
After enjoying mud to the fullest, you can fill your empty stomach in
the food booth zone that stretches along the beach where there is
a feast of all kinds of food from various regions of Korea. In this hot
summer, let’s jump into the exciting mud experience that gratifies
our all senses in the hottest spot in the world.

We Invite You to an Exciting Mud Experience!Hello Mando family members, nice to meet you! I am so happy to introduce the mud festival, one of Korea’s popular festivals. Daecheon Beach
in Boryeong, where the mud festival is held, is a place young people in particular visit a lot. It is also popular as a travel spot for families with
children because there are abundant things to enjoy and eat as well as the mud festival. You can feel energetic and passionate Korean senti-
ment here. Don’t miss the mud festival, where you can have both skin care and fun.
The number of employees of MDK who participate in sharing thanks has dou-
bled since March. This is because of a thanks pop-up that was just introduced.
If you log into Hanmaru on the last working day of every month, which is Thank
You Day, a thanks pop-up appears. Employees write a thank you message in
the thanks pop-up window. Then the message is delivered to the person who
received thanks via email. Also, some employees who participate in sharing
thanks and the employees who receive the thank you messages receive some
small gifts. Lots of employees participate in using the thanks pop-up, which
started in March, and share thanks every month.
An offline Thank You Day event is also held once a quarter in front of the
company cafeteria with a lot of interest and participation by the employees. In
particular, fruit was prepared for employees in the first quarter event on March
30 (Fri) and the employees really liked it. Many employees participated in shar-
ing thanks with not only the thanks pop-up but also the offline event and had
a warm Thank You Day.
