Mandibular nerve

• Largest of 3 divisions of trigeminal nerve

• Nerve of 1st branchial arch

• Mixed nerve

• Sensory- trigeminal ganglion, motor- pons

Branches of Mandibular nerve

From the main trunk

1. Meningeal branch (nervous spinosus)

2. Nerve to medial pterygoid (also supplies

tensor tympani & tensor veli palatini)

Lingual nerve

It comes in direct contact with the mandible

medial to the third molar tooth. Here the nerve

is covered only by the mucous membrane of

the gum, and becomes palpable against the

mandible about 1 cm below and behind the

third molar tooth

Otic ganglion

Page 22: Mandibular nerve and otic ganglion

• Parasympathetic ganglion

• 2-3 mm in size

• Topographically - mandibular nerve,

Functionally - glossopharyngeal nerve
