Dr Supriya Garikipatis research has shown howsmall changes to the process of applying formicrocredit loans in India couldmake a hugedifference to half a million women each year.

Her research focused, for the first time, onhowwomen used their loanmoney and theeffect this had on their empowerment in thefamily and the community. Her research hasresulted in some simple changes to the loanprocess to encouragewomen to take greaterownership of themoney and considerpurchasing their own assets. Dr Garikipatiexplains: In many cases, womens loans arebeing used for things that benefit the wholehousehold, or to help businesses owned bymale relatives.Whilst somewomen are happywith this, for others it creates a new burden.Women are expected to repay the loansthemselves, and in some cases we foundthat womenwere taking on additional lowlypaid work in order to do so.With around500,000women applying for loans eachyear, the potential of this work is substantial.Dr Garikipatis research could also provideamodel of best practice for researchers inother countries.

Professor Andy Lyons, alongside ULMScolleagues, has gained insight into theagility of manufacturing operations andinto the design and implementation ofagile supply chains. The research hasfocused upon: (1) the creation of agileprocesses, and (2) planning and activitysynchronisation through the design ofsystems for sharing information withinand across organisational boundaries.

It concerned the development of methodsand tools for the creation of resilient, collaborative networks to support theprovision of customised products.

Professor Terry McNultys interdisciplinaryresearch has combined expertise in accountingand finance, alongside behavioural approachesto corporate governance in order to investigateinfluences of risk on the behaviour of UK listedcorporations Boards of Governors. Focusingon the recent financial crisis, he has assessedcorporate risk-taking behaviour and the abilityof boards to fulfil their responsibility of properlyidentifying, assessing, andmanaging risk.
