DALAY – Monsoon Season
Dear Families
I have a giant award hanging outside my office – awarded to the whole
school at our first assembly – for: “The Most Bucket-Filling Start to a
School Year.” The idea comes from a whole school text we use at
Malak Primary called Have You Filled a Bucket Today? This heart-
warming book encourages positive behaviour by using the idea of an
invisible bucket to show children how easy and rewarding it is to
express kindness, appreciation, and love by filling buckets. The
bucket-filling start has been achieved through calm and busy
classrooms, students trying hard and showing persistence, playtimes
that are happy and safe and beautiful manners and connectedness. Our
students feel welcomed and welcome others. My bucket is brimming
over!
Thank you to the families who braved the wet weather to come and
meet our teachers and visit the classrooms last night at our annual
Meet and Greet, it was great to see you. Thank you to our local
member Ms. Ngaree Ah Kit for supplying the sausages for our
sausage sizzle – we love having a Malak alumni supporting our
school community so well. For our new families, the Meet and Greet
is an opportunity to put a face to a name, hear about the planned
curriculum and see the baseline data walls and student goals in our
key learning areas for each student. If you would like to discuss
your child’s progress and learning in detail, you are invited to make
a time through the front office so that you and your child’s teacher
can have a focused and private conversation.
While I am issuing invitations, a big opportunity is coming up for
any parents wishing to play an active role in our school with our
School Council meeting to be held next Tuesday 20th February at
5.30pm in the conference room at Malak School. This is a chance
to hear a little bit more about our school and what 2018 holds for our
school community. Everyone is welcome to come along – even if
you’d just like to listen before deciding to commit to being a
member of Council. We will also be holding our Annual General
Meeting on Tuesday 13th March at 5.30pm, it would be great to
see lots of family members there at the meeting.
Important dates to
remember:

9:00 to 10:30 at the

Malak School – ‘Learning For Life’
Along with our Writing goals for 2018, some of our extra programs have begun and more will come
online in coming weeks. Drop Everything and Read has commenced for every student; Chess Club in
the library at recess is underway as well; our School Choir has met once already and the eligible Year
5’s and 6’s are very excited about being part of the BEAT this year. This week saw the arrival of a
very large truck from Life Education – providing state of the art learning for every student across our
school. This amazing opportunity was only possible due to the generosity of a sponsor – who paid for
our school community to access the program. We are very grateful to Suzy from Life Education and
our sponsor Hyundai Help for Kids.
Our Sanderson Region Sports Program has begun for students in Years 3 to 6. Years 3 to 4 will
participate in skill lessons and an intraschool competition; Years 5 to 6 will participate in skills
sessions and intra and interschool competitions with Anula, Wulagi, Karama and Manunda Terrace
students. Our first sports are AFL and Netball – and it was great to see students sharing their learning
on the playground.
Have a great term, enjoy the monsoon as it comes and goes – the students have been very patient
when wet weather lunch has to be implemented; more bucket filling! Please don’t hesitate to contact
us for any further information, to congratulate us or with any concerns or ideas.
Kind regards
Lorraine Evans

Life Education NT – Healthy Harold
Life Education NT offers schools and young people an interactive health and drug education program
that is age appropriate, in line with National School Curriculum and supports teachers to deliver
quality health education in the classroom.
Sessions are held in the Mobile Learning Centre and are designed to be hands on and child centred.
Students discover the wonders of the body and how best to care for their physical, social and
emotional well-being. Teacher resources are available pre and post visit with access to our online
resources and follow up workbooks. Parents are encouraged to visit our Parent Hub via
www.lifeeducation.org.au.
This year we have been fortunate to receive sponsorship through Life Education and Hyundai Help
for Kids. They will be at Malak School in Week 3 from the 13/2/18.
We would like to show our appreciation of this support
by giving a gold coin donation from each student.
Please send $1 or $2
with your child to school by the 23/2/18.

CHANGE TO RECESS AND LUNCH EATING TIMES
Please be advised that there will be a slight change to recess and lunch eating times in 2018. Students will continue to have the same recess and lunch supervised play times but will eat their food in class after their break. As recess will be slightly later we are encouraging families to participate in Crunch & Sip in the morning. This is a short 5-10 minute break where students can have a drink of water and a fruit or veggie snack. Some ideas include carrots, cherry tomatoes, grapes, apples, bananas and celery. Choose something easy to eat that isn’t messy. There are plenty of ideas and helpful tips on the below website; www.healthykids.com.au/crunchsip-healthy-snack-ideas
BACK TO SCHOOL PAYMENT SCHEME
Just a reminder to all families if you haven’t used your Back to School Voucher please come into the Front Office to utilize A.S.A.P. Vouchers need to be completed by 13 April.

We are a class of enthusiastic learners and we are getting to know our new classroom and classmates. We are finding out where to find the things we need and where things belong. Our learning outcomes are:
Learning to share with our friends
While we are sharing we are also learning to sort shapes, numbers and letters.
We are learning that we pack up quickly and quietly.
